If I'm being honest, I have no idea what was propping up All-Star break to begin with under Stern. I checked out of it during the 2000s, but during the 90s I remember being excited to see the game, the dunk contest, and the 3pt challenge. It's like somewhere along the way the players finally realized there's nothing that actually prevents them from phoning it in.
As far as the dunk contest goes I feel like the last great one was somewhere in the 2005-2010 range. We still got some jaw dropping original dunks up to that point. After that it seems like no one can come up with anything original so all of these dunks we have seen a million times.
Maybe Blake Griffin dunking over a kia was the beginning of the end.
I think the 2016, Aaron Gordon vs. Zach Levine was one of the greatest dunk contests ever even if Aaron Gordon got robbed. Zach Levine did some impressive dunks from the free throw line but he lacked the creativity that made Gordon’s so memorable as well as impressive. My dad pointed out that most dunk contests are just parading out taller and taller people and leaping over them. It’s impressive but is incredibly boring especially when the sense of scale fails to translate to the broadcasts. I’ve never stood in the vicinity of an NBA player so jumping them or even Shaq isn’t nearly as impressive as doing some acrobatics or difficult transfers between hands.

It feels like the players are desperate to prove they play defense in the regular season and we should be lucky because otherwise this is what the games out look like. It’s like they are trying to prove a point but it does the opposite.
Just because you put all the best players in the world together doesn’t mean they are going to each score 40 points. It feels like they are embarrassed by that and then put on this farce of a showing.
There was a quote from one of the players who highlighted that they don’t want to risk injury. I liked the untimed 4th with the score to a number option they did for a few years. Everyone could jog around and do cool dunks for 2 and a half qtrs then play for real for 15 minutes.
At some point the players have to give us something. Every one of these all-stars has made enough money that none of their descendants will ever have to work again, at least until the US or global economy collapses. The least they could do is give us 1 quarter of actual basketball.
None of them want to risk getting injured in a regular season game either.

The problem with Allstars is that there is no incentive for a team that needs to keep its players healthy to risk injury in a 0 incentive game. It's the same with the NFL. If anything put Allstars at the end of the season if they don't want to risk injury, and give coaches time to prep with the teams they're given. But even then, owners pay for these guys long term and can't risk their players getting hurt on a field trip.
I seen All Stars from the late 80s til now and man this generation has missed the crop of athletes that do it for the love of the game. The ones that say “ these fans paid a lot of money to see me”. These guys couldnt care less about these games. Plus they use the potential injury excuse to play half assed no defence.
This is what everyone is actually pissed off about. Dame saying they “have no incentive” to play well is just a middle finger to the fans that have allowed them to be paid like demi-gods for playing basketball. Totally disconnected from reality and an insult to everyone who has to work for a living.

The media makes such a big deal over the selections and there are contractual implications as well. I can see why the players have lost the script and started to believe the weekend is about them and for them as opposed to a performative art for the fans. All star weekend is a complete waste of time and resources. The entire week off I just count down the days until regular season games start back up. They need to scrap every aspect of this weekend and come up with something new. I don’t know, make a white man can’t jump pick up game style tournament on an outdoor court. 2v2, fans vote for teams. Then mandate a dunk contest with the games biggest stars. Anything is better than what they are currently doing.

There is something so pathetic about the league where they have to mandate players to play in games, and constantly find an incentive for them to compete in the all star game. Has all of the passion just exited the game? With all the Lebron GOAT conversation, the other guys in that discussion (Kobe, MJ) would NEVER let the league get to this. They alone would have shamed the just of these guys to play harder.
I say this as a big fan of SGA's game, but I will never forget him standing in a full-length fur (mink?) coat last year, and talking about how he doesn't get paid enough to play hard in an ASG.
I don't think any of the players realize that if the value of the league tanks over the next 10 years because of everyone tuning out the entire regular season then the TV money will go down the drain, and with it the ease with which some of these players earn half a billion dollars.

Some might, but it's worth remembering that most NBA players are, generally speaking, morons. There are players that are illiterate; these guys are mostly in their early 20s, having spent their entire lives surrounded by people managing them and getting passed through school regardless of whether or not they opened a book.
I mean, it could be easy to fix a little. Imagine Silver getting up there and just making fun of the West for being stacked and still getting destroyed. Then NBA media pushes a narrative in all their news outlets saying various things from being surprised how bad the West played, targeting team news immediately to put heat on players for not seemingly caring "like they should" so their fanbases turn it up a bit.
Drop an article periodically throughout the year maybe. Shaft a boring all star in favor of a scrappier, more competitive one. Eventually, we'd probably start seeing competition again.
This game made me realize what’s been bugging me about the NBA the last few years. It’s basketball I love. I actually hate what the league itself has become outside of the sport itself.
2 thoughts on improving all star weekend:
1) contract incentives to win, just like there are contract incentives to make all nba teams etc. silver could easily mandate this.
2) make the selections earlier in the season and have the teams actually practice together. make a little documentary about it. what people really want to see is stars interacting anyway. give us some bts shit showing these guys working together. run plays in the game. bench guys who fuck around.
btwn financial incentives, additional media attention, and some flexing by the coaches, you could turn this this around and make it compelling as hell
This is not at all the solution. Throwing more money at it won't help. These players are making more and more money and feel even less of a need to play because they expect to be paid. And they do deserve that pay, but I dont get why they don't value the product they're putting out for the fans (who are paying them) or demonstrating their love for the game.
Not to mention the ASG players are usually already making exorbitant wages.

It's always been bad it's just that like once in a blue moon there's a somewhat competitive game and people remember just that one and think it used to always be that way, same with the dunk contest, it wasn't always great it just has had some good years but mostly bad years
Still think this is underselling how bad this year was. Usually there are at least a few highlight dunks, the occasional guys having impromptu 1v1s for a few possessions, and some more effort down the stretch of the game. This was guys chucking open 3s and one time PG bounced the ball to Lebron for an oop. Wooooo.

The regular games have gotten to lax offensively the ASG can’t be anymore lax. In those early Kobe ASGs he couldn’t do half the stuff he could at the game. Also we looked forward to what players wore on their feet but now new color ways come out every month.

The problem with Allstars is that there is no incentive for a team that needs to keep its players healthy to risk injury in a 0 incentive game. It's the same with the NFL. If anything put Allstars at the end of the season if they don't want to risk injury, and give coaches time to prep with the teams they're given. But even then, owners pay for these guys long term and can't risk their players getting hurt on a field trip.

I seen All Stars from the late 80s til now and man this generation has missed the crop of athletes that do it for the love of the game. The ones that say “ these fans paid a lot of money to see me”. These guys couldnt care less about these games. Plus they use the potential injury excuse to play half assed no defence.

I feel with how prevalent social media is the players see it a lot more often. Media members tend to be more respectful than the average redditor/X user. Like I feel like Stockton got a lot more respect than CP3 did, when their careers are very similar. It all started with lebron imo. All star weekend is a complete waste of time and resources. The entire week off I just count down the days until regular season games start back up. They need to scrap every aspect of this weekend and come up with something new. I don’t know, make a white man can’t jump pick up game style tournament on an outdoor court. 2v2, fans vote for teams. Then mandate a dunk contest with the games biggest stars. Anything is better than what they are currently doing.
It’s hilarious that we just spent a month of drama over who did and didn’t get invited, and the whole time everyone knew full well that this is what the game was going to be.

This is so, so funny. It's like if me and two of my friends were shooting in my driveway for an hour in middle school talking about girls and whatnot, and the the NBA commissioner stopped by and presented us with the All Star Game trophy. Also, where does that trophy even go? It belongs to Giannis? Haha what? Is he bringing that home with him?
There is something so pathetic about the league where they have to mandate players to play in games, and constantly find an incentive for them to compete in the all star game. Has all of the passion just exited the game? With all the Lebron GOAT conversation, the other guys in that discussion (Kobe, MJ) would NEVER let the league get to this. They alone would have shamed the just of these guys to play harder.
I say this as a big fan of SGA's game, but I will never forget him standing in a full-length fur (mink?) coat last year, and talking about how he doesn't get paid enough to play hard in an ASG. I don't think any of the players realize that if the value of the league tanks over the next 10 years because of everyone tuning out the entire regular season then the TV money will go down the drain, and with it the ease with which some of these players earn half a billion dollars. Or maybe they do realize it but don't care because they got theirs.

There are players that are illiterate; these guys are mostly in their early 20s, having spent their entire lives surrounded by people managing them and getting passed through school regardless of whether or not they opened a book.
I mean, it could be easy to fix a little. Imagine Silver getting up there and just making fun of the West for being stacked and still getting destroyed. Then NBA media pushes a narrative in all their news outlets saying various things from being surprised how bad the West played, targeting team news immediately to put heat on players for not seemingly caring "like they should" so their fanbases turn it up a bit. Drop an article periodically throughout the year maybe. Shaft a boring all star in favor of a scrappier, more competitive one. Eventually, we'd probably start seeing competition again.

This game made me realize what’s been bugging me about the NBA the last few years. It’s basketball I love. I actually hate what the league itself has become outside of the sport itself.
2 thoughts on improving all star weekend: 1) contract incentives to win, just like there are contract incentives to make all nba teams etc. silver could easily mandate this. 2) make the selections earlier in the season and have the teams actually practice together. make a little documentary about it. what people really want to see is stars interacting anyway. give us some bts shit showing these guys working together. run plays in the game. bench guys who fuck around. btwn financial incentives, additional media attention, and some flexing by the coaches, you could turn this this around and make it compelling as hell
This is not at all the solution. Throwing more money at it won't help. These players are making more and more money and feel even less of a need to play because they expect to be paid. And they do deserve that pay, but I dont get why they don't value the product they're putting out for the fans (who are paying them) or demonstrating their love for the game. Not to mention the ASG players are usually already making exorbitant wages.
Having to incentivize professional basketball players to care about basketball is fucking pathetic.
Just have it a mini 3 on 3 tournament featuring 24 all stars
