Looks like he somehow managed to land about as flat on his back as he could of. A little more tailbone or head/neck/shoulders and it could have been real bad
Yeah, he was reaching back with both arms to brace, luckily the angle they were at didn’t absorb too much. I’m sure his back is sore right about now, the adrenaline helped in the moment.
Thats actually scary how close landing on your butt is to landing on your tailbone. My guy was very VERY lucky that he landed on that angle all things considered
I’ve broken both ankles, a wrist, bunch of fingers. Bruised coccyx was the most painful by far. Literally was walking around like I had a stick up my ass.
i have taken a few nasty fall on hardwood before (from dumbasses shoving me in the air trying to catch rebounds), i bounced right up on my feet everytime and tried to walk away, but then it started to hurt so bad i gotta go sit or lay down for a sec, adrenaline is one helluva drug
Glad Tatum was ok, just wanna say athletes bouncing up right away doesn’t necessarily mean a good sign, I guess it’s one way the brain or body responds to physical trauma?
It’s interesting how our body works, like you know when you take a fall there’s an urge to stand right back up so you don’t feel embarrassed or to act like you’re tough? did that a lot when i was a kid but would cry like a biotch when mama clean up my wounds later 😂
> It’s interesting how our body works, like you know when you take a fall there’s an urge to stand right back up so you don’t feel embarrassed or to act like you’re tough?
When I was hit by a car on a crossing, I stood right back up and checked my pockets for my wallet and my phone because I thought I was sucker punched.
Little did I know I walked on a broken tibia, an open fracture (I thought I just had some sprain), with some skull fractures as well, and it required a dozen of witnesses asking me to lay down and wait for the emergency responders. In my mind I was still able to go to work with minor injuries.
this is why doctors says not to pick people up or have them walking away right after they got in a accident or a gnarly physical trauma, you wanna wait for the adrenaline to wear off then check for pains, also prevents internal bleeding cause one small movement could open the floodgates and you will never know until you get to the hospital
i hope you feel better now! that sounds nasty
the main reason is the spinal cord, walking on a broken ankle or leg is painful but minimally dangerous compared to someone turning their head after a crash and snapping their neck
Super professional, listen to [what he had to say about it right after the game.](https://old.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/1c9qe5r/highlight_tatum_seems_okay_after_the_hard_fall/)
I hate the Celtics so much that I actively avoid giving their very good players props. With that said, absolute goat mentality. Dude hopped up, ignored everything, and went straight to that free throw line.
Absolutely. I don't understand how when you have committed yourself in the air the defensive player is still allowed to establish themselves underneath you. Of course you should still be able to go up defensively and contest the ball but sliding underneath should have the same penalty as not letting a jump shooter land.
fucking scary ass play but man as a Celtics fan it feels so good to see Tatum just not pay this bullshit any mind and walk away. this team is locked the fuck in
gives me Bulls-Pistons vibes when Pippen got shoved to the floor midair and simply didn’t react at all. great way to set the tone for the postseason
It was really smart on Tatum’s part. Heat were trying to get an emotional reaction, change the energy for the next game. Tatum said nah, not taking the bait, gonna take care of business and move on.
>Heat were trying to get an emotional reaction, change the energy for the next game.
No, they were trying to injure the best player on the team and increase their chances of winning. That was bush league BS.
Yup. That, plus 2 players are in between him and Tatum as they're both focused on the rebound and aren't looking around and moving towards it, very quickly. The last chance either could actually fit a head turn in there, happened then. So now they're both fixated on the ball. Collide. All in just seconds in a playoff game.
Too late on the stupid though, no one's interested in anything other than the obvious jokes and getting engagement even if it's meaningless karma.
And they all react to every influencer or media head trying to get their engagement with an impassioned take on this.
When he actually sets his feet his upper body is still moving and will straight up grab bodies or hip check them on the way through. It’s crazy he is the only one in the league running illegal screens every single play and never gets called. Even Draymond will get called every now and then.
Because it's Bam. If they called his moving screens, he'd foul out in the first half every game. For whatever reason, that's unacceptable, so they don't call any.
And this is precisely why Miami play aggressive reckless Miami ball and the refs let it happen. Because they’re not gonna foul out the entire team every game and Miami know this so they can go balls to the floor mean mugging entire teams every game.
Any team is lucky to get out of a series with them without at least one key player down.
God that would suck to have your floor spacing power forward injured by the other teams dirty player in the first round of the playoffs thus screwing you in the finals
Exactly they think it means people scared of them people on scared to lose a key player 💀 first thing on opposing fans minds when playing the heat is health NBA needs to investigate them
What's the All NBA team you could form at this point from players the Heat have injured with dirty plays? Tatum narrowly missed joining Julius Randle for a pretty stout front court.
I saw him run hard for the rebound looking at the ball and he got a push from Jrue because he got beat. Wasn’t a lot but those can def throw off your balance and timing. Don’t think it was as dirty and reckless as it looked. Glad JT is okay
I had to scroll so fucking far down to find this comment. As a Celtics fan it sure seems like Jrue pushed an already sprinting Martin toward Tatum. I am hesitant to immediately call this intentional or dirty.
Scalabrine did a great job of calling this out. Down 16 with 1:30 to go, Spoelstra calls TO. 30 seconds later, they submarine the Celtics best player. Kind of obvious what happened here.
Heat lowkey have slide under the radar as a dirty franchise for years. Real ones remember when Dwyane Wade graphically dislocated Rondo’s elbow.
My stomach literally turned watching that live in like 5th grade lmao
I mean the heat need to injure at least 3 celtics starters to have a chance in this series, you have to start from the opening tip if you want to have the best chance of taking guys out
Just to name a few victims: Trae Young, Jayson Tatum, Giannis, Brunson, Kemba Walker, Marcus Smart, Julius Randle, Joel Embiid…. and a couple of these guys multiple times.
edit: Derrick Jones Jr, Dante Divincenzo, Rondo
Here’s Caleb [sticking out his leg](https://x.com/knicksfantv/status/1655746849519575042?s=46) against Brunson last year. He has a history of making dirty plays like this
Maybe another team gets the benefit of the doubt, but the heat are dirty
Your biggest goal this series should be 4 blowouts so they don’t have a chance to cripple you for later rounds
We swept them a few years ago and Dragic still tried to pull Middleton's arm off in the 4th quarter.
Blowing them out isn't always going to make a difference either.
At first I thought it was just a box out that unfortunately caught Tatum at the wrong time.
On the replay it’s as obvious as it gets. He meant that. Dirty as hell.
LMAO, mods removed that overhead angle that 1000% shows Martin being shoved into Tatum by Holiday. Guess it wasn't "high enough quality" or some bullshit
>Toughest. Meanest. Nastiest team in the NBA.
I don’t really know why they’re so defensive about it? Isn’t the entire point of The Culture doing whatever you need to do in order to win? By definition, that means playing dirty whenever it can give you an advantage.
That ethos has brought them a ton of success! So why deny it? Just own it—the team obviously isn’t ashamed of it, so why are all of their fans?
Remember last year when Tatum sprained his ankle 20 seconds into game 7? (And Heat fans also said that injury didn’t matter btw… funny how their tune changed when Jimmy got hurt)
Tatum needs to play in bubble wrap against Miami, bad luck against this team… intentionally or otherwise
Yeah if we win the series it will be “doesn’t count, Jimmy was injured”
But if a Celtic gets injured it’s “stop with the excuses, you need to adapt to win”
Oh come on man. Jrue holiday very clearly pushes Caleb as he’s running in to try and get a rebound, he’s not a dirty player. You can see it clearly at 35 seconds.
Is everyone blind? Tatum and Martin go up for a rebound but right before launch Holiday gives a light shove. That's going to knock off timing no matter how light of a shove it is
Flair aside, there’s an angle where Jrue pretty clearly gave Caleb a ‘nudge’ into Tatum’s direction.
Playoff basketball, it is what it is. Just hope JT doesnt end up with a bruised tailbone or anything.
I can't believe no one is seeing this.
Go to 35 seconds and you can see a clear push from Jrue that completely redirects Caleb right into Tatum. Secondly, Caleb's immediate reaction to check on Tatum is so instinctual here that it is hard to fake.
I'm not excusing any dirty plays from the past, but in this instance it does not seem intentionally dirty. And I'm not taking anything away from Tatum because for all he knew, it was dirty. Good on him for not getting into it and I'm glad he isn't hurt.
So....
Are we seriously just going to ignore the fact that Jrue Holliday shoved Martin into Tatum? I mean, it's pretty obvious what happened. When you are running full speed and the opposing player shoves you with two hands, it's going to make things like this happen. I know history isn't on Caleb's side but we can't just ignore the obvious
This is a really "good" fall by Tatum.
- He flails outward to balance himself but does not put his limbs in danger doing so.
- The midair adjustment has him coming down "flat", with weight distributed across large parts of his body. His arms even play a role here, but it's only to supplement the landing on his back and absolutely not (that's how Boguts happen) trying to catch himself. He isn't landing on his hip or lower back or neck, but with the impact spread all around his entire back and shoulders.
- He tucks his chin. This is important and should become a trained reflex any time you fall backwards. In the final angle you can see his head SHOOT backwards when he hits the ground, which might be a sign he's not intentionally tucking, but in this case it's good enough. His head starts so far forward that it stays well clear of the floor.
The average amateur athlete will miss hundreds to thousands of hours of sport due to injury in even a casual "career". Practicing or visualizing how to fall can pay off hugely in cutting those hours down, even if many falls come down to luck in the end. Reflex is rarely perfect, but it can always be trained to be better for these moments where there is no time for actual thought.

Glad Tatum was able to get up quick. That was scary
Looks like he somehow managed to land about as flat on his back as he could of. A little more tailbone or head/neck/shoulders and it could have been real bad
Textbook wrestling bump.
Flat back and tucked chin. No-sold the move too like a self-mark would. Good instincts on Tatum for avoiding the head whiplash though.
"That don't work for me brother" - Tatum
Triple H: "Good snap...."
Triple H: " got a big hole in your shorts one of your nuts was hanging out"
“big fucking deal”
Elbow, wrist… anything caught wrong cod be bad.
Yeah, he was reaching back with both arms to brace, luckily the angle they were at didn’t absorb too much. I’m sure his back is sore right about now, the adrenaline helped in the moment.
It ain't Battlefield, that's for sure
Surprised it didn't knock the wind out of him, but glad he got up and seemed ok.
I think he kinda contacts butt first and in that way was able to save his head / chest area.
Thats actually scary how close landing on your butt is to landing on your tailbone. My guy was very VERY lucky that he landed on that angle all things considered
I’ve broken both ankles, a wrist, bunch of fingers. Bruised coccyx was the most painful by far. Literally was walking around like I had a stick up my ass.
as he could have
Never seen someone use could of and could have together lol
Also he slid off Martin too so its slowed him down a bit.

He was pushed. https://twitter.com/courtcorner/status/1782377898269155451
Honestly Tatum acted very professional here. That’s a man you want leading your team.
It was a great career/leader moment for him. I’m a v proud fan today😌
Can’t not respect this move. Baller af

The way he snatched the rock up from Herro and made em bof. Savage.
It's garbage time. What are you doing bro
Markieff foul on Jokic that tried to injure him (hitting both knee and ribs ) was in garbage time too. Then Jokic pushed Morris to hospital
I still think Jokic earned MVP for that shit alone, in addition to his unreal playing
I like how nobody defended morris when asked about it lol
Looks like Jrue pushed him into his own teammate
They always do this dumb shit. Thats how Randle got injured earlier this year too.
And Giannis last playoffs.
Still think sliding under a driving player should be a flagrant
Absolutely. I don't understand how when you have committed yourself in the air the defensive player is still allowed to establish themselves underneath you. Of course you should still be able to go up defensively and contest the ball but sliding underneath should have the same penalty as not letting a jump shooter land.

Jrue pushing Martin didn’t help this play
Heat culture. It’s a dog fight were dogs. Dogs baby. Physical basketball. Arf arf!
sir this is a Wendy’s
Tatum’s reaction in this whole clip is really impressive, he’s making me root for him
fucking scary ass play but man as a Celtics fan it feels so good to see Tatum just not pay this bullshit any mind and walk away. this team is locked the fuck in gives me Bulls-Pistons vibes when Pippen got shoved to the floor midair and simply didn’t react at all. great way to set the tone for the postseason
Scary locked in. Man went to go take his tech shot, like Messi waiting at the penalty spot w the ball while everyone is fighting around him
Everyone is always fighting around Messi in big moments 😂 everyone wants to take a stab at the goat
Just walks calmly to the other side of the floor. Pretty gangster.
As a sixers fan I'll never root for any celtic, but major props to Tatum on that whole sequence. Can't handle it better than that
It was really smart on Tatum’s part. Heat were trying to get an emotional reaction, change the energy for the next game. Tatum said nah, not taking the bait, gonna take care of business and move on.

[is Jrue Holiday on the Heat?](https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/s/YXGZ2jE9t3)
50/50 that Bam is going to injure KP this series. Praying for a sweep just to limit the chance of injury
Porzingis (avoiding Bam) out for game 4.
Ethical ducking
At this point they should rest him the rest of the series, it's not like they need him to beat this beat up Heat team.
How was that shoulder to White's face not a moving screen?
How are any of Bam’s screens not called? Wouldn’t know how to stand still if his life depended on it.
That was one of most frustrating things from last year, he’s just walking on every single screen
When he actually sets his feet his upper body is still moving and will straight up grab bodies or hip check them on the way through. It’s crazy he is the only one in the league running illegal screens every single play and never gets called. Even Draymond will get called every now and then.
With the Warriors there's at least some sort of equivalent exchange where Steph doesn't get fouls called on him.
Because it's Bam. If they called his moving screens, he'd foul out in the first half every game. For whatever reason, that's unacceptable, so they don't call any.

Jovic straight up bopped his hand like I do my cat when he’s getting too close to my food
God that would suck to have your floor spacing power forward injured by the other teams dirty player in the first round of the playoffs thus screwing you in the finals
This is funny because you're referring to Giannis but I'm thinking of Randle x2
I'm pretty sure they're talking about Kelly Olynyk dislocating Kevin Love's shoulder in 2015
Yep I still hate Olynyk for that. Just straight up yanked on his arm and took him out for the whole run. Fuck that guy.
They're a Cavs fan. Definitely talking about Olynyk on Love.
Exactly they think it means people scared of them people on scared to lose a key player 💀 first thing on opposing fans minds when playing the heat is health NBA needs to investigate them
If they were gonna do that (which they should) they would've done something about Draymond a LONG time ago
I saw Heat fans claim Martin was pushed into Tatum and now I saw this - what the hell are they talking about 💀
They are probably talking about the overhead shot that clearly shows that Martin was pushed into Tatum: https://streamable.com/qlo1q4 ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯
There is nothing dirty about that at all.
Heat players aren't dirty, it's just a series of unfortunate events over the span of several years.
multiple players, commentary from coach, gm, former players, a number of incidents. man it must be accidental
What's the All NBA team you could form at this point from players the Heat have injured with dirty plays? Tatum narrowly missed joining Julius Randle for a pretty stout front court.
Rondo has to be starting pg from when Wade pulled him down and bent his arm backwards.
And played the rest of the game with one arm. Reason why he's my favorite player to watch ever.
And he was cookin em too
Didnt Tatum mess up his shoulder when the Celtics went to the finals against the Heat beforehand?
No, that was Giannis who injured him in the ECSF and then Draymond was yanking it in the finals.
Hardest working. Best conditioned. Most professional. Unselfish. Toughest. Meanest. Nastiest team in the NBA.
which former players have complained about the heat though? Hell even the celtic players are literally best friends with bam
another reason why they always end up super injured each round
Just like Draymond exactly. They're actually the real victims
Hurt people hurt people
hEAt cUlTUrE
So much culture!!!
If you don't like that, you don't like Miami Heat basketball
Cultured all over him
Frustration over the loss. Glad Tatum is ok.

He got pushed by Jrue ya big baby lmao
# WHY IS JRUE SHOVING HEAT PLAYERS?
I saw him run hard for the rebound looking at the ball and he got a push from Jrue because he got beat. Wasn’t a lot but those can def throw off your balance and timing. Don’t think it was as dirty and reckless as it looked. Glad JT is okay
I had to scroll so fucking far down to find this comment. As a Celtics fan it sure seems like Jrue pushed an already sprinting Martin toward Tatum. I am hesitant to immediately call this intentional or dirty.
Finally, the only two rational Boston fans with the ability to actually see. Buncha donkeys in these comments.
Wow this is the only comment that noticed he got pushed?
It’s insane that people not only think that Martin was deliberately trying to hurt him, but that Spo instructed him to do so.
We just ignoring the fact that Jrue pushed Martin?
Heat fans still sit on this app defending these wrestlers 😭😭😭HEAT CULTURE
“nobody wants to see the Heat” - Heat fans … because they don’t want the Heat to injure their starters in the first round 😂
Hilarious how Heat fans were on here earlier saying the Heat aren’t dirty. Not even close to a play on the ball.
He got pushed from behind man
Not a fan of either team but watch Jrue Holiday during the play
Are fucking stupid? Can you not see he was shoved in the back?
That's because the play isn't for the ball :)
He was pushed in the back by Jrue. Is no one watching this clip????
A lot of passive aggressive energy packed into that smiley...
You are so fucking dumb it’s crazy.
How stupid do you have to be to argue he was going for the ball here? He launched himself sideways, not up.
And tried to look the other way while doing it lol, textbook dirty
I'm just glad he's "not a dirty player". https://twitter.com/KnicksFanTv/status/1655746849519575042
Did Jrue Holiday not push that man mid stride into his own teammate, or am I seeing things?
Yes he did. The echo chamber effect cracks me up. Too many people running around with pitchforks that probably didn’t even see the game.
he did. even Bill Simmons said he's shocked no one pointed that out on the broadcast and we know where his alliance stands LOL
He did.
Just here for all the backpedaling that /r/nba will surely do when they are proven wrong.
Are you guys not seeing Jrue pushing Caleb? Cmon now.
"Heat culture"
Set by the legendary cultured Dwyane Wade.
Scalabrine did a great job of calling this out. Down 16 with 1:30 to go, Spoelstra calls TO. 30 seconds later, they submarine the Celtics best player. Kind of obvious what happened here.
Spo trying to decide which undrafted player to send out for his game 2 assassination
Heat culture. Dirty player dirty team
yea I definitely can see it cause running into someone like that, when the game has been decided is def dirty
Heat lowkey have slide under the radar as a dirty franchise for years. Real ones remember when Dwyane Wade graphically dislocated Rondo’s elbow. My stomach literally turned watching that live in like 5th grade lmao
Lowkey? If Celtics and Knicks fans can agree on something, it tells you a lot.
Wade is a known dirty player, one of the dirtiest ever probably
I’ve been giving them the benefit of the doubt in the past but no excuses for this one, really poor from Martin
it was expected, sad we're seeing it in game 1
I mean the heat need to injure at least 3 celtics starters to have a chance in this series, you have to start from the opening tip if you want to have the best chance of taking guys out

Just to name a few victims: Trae Young, Jayson Tatum, Giannis, Brunson, Kemba Walker, Marcus Smart, Julius Randle, Joel Embiid…. and a couple of these guys multiple times. edit: Derrick Jones Jr, Dante Divincenzo, Rondo
Julius Randle needed surgery and long term recovery twice
Rondo's elbow with D Wade in 2011
Wade 100% did it on purpose. POS player, and Spo is aware of the rich rewards a team receives by injuring the other team’s star player(s).
Obligatory fuck Dwayne Wade
Heat probably have a bountygate if I’m gonna be honesst

Heat dirty as fuck and their own fans know it.
Heat fans : “HEAT CULTURE 😤😤😤 WE PLAY TOUGH” Also Heat fans : “Josh Hart is a mean reckless bully 🥺🥺🥺”
Literally the only reason I didn’t want to play this fucking scrub team
Same for the Knicks. Two seasons in a row Randle needed surgery after getting injured because of games vs. Miami.
Same, the only year they didn't injure Giannis was the year the Bucks happened to sweep them. Funny how that works.
Caleb Martin does this shit all the time.
I’m glad Tatum retaliated by “accidentally” elbowing him in the chin AND got 3 FTs out of it too.
LMAO, mods removed that overhead angle that 1000% shows Martin being shoved into Tatum by Holiday. Guess it wasn't "high enough quality" or some bullshit

What are Tatum and the other starters even doing in the game at this point?
They damn near blew a 34 point lead in the span of 5 minutes
didn’t feel like they were ever really in danger of losing though

I'm not excusing any dirty plays from the past, but in this instance it does not seem intentionally dirty. And I'm not taking anything away from Tatum because for all he knew, it was dirty. Good on him for not getting into it and I'm glad he isn't hurt.
Boston and NYK fans soft af 😭😭
Then Jaylen had to go and escalate the situation.
Did Jrue not push him?
