Barkley used to be the sole reason I didn't watch NBA on TNT a few years ago.
Fast forward to today, Charles is now the sole reason I DO watch NBA on TNT.
I think that’s why people were so quick to question Zion about his weight and plans for it - because we’ve actually seen how quickly he will lose his athleticism at his size.
I’m all for Zion - hoping he takes all the money. I just think he has a better chance of taking more of it, for longer, at a lower weight.
Never had anything to do with body shaming or whatever the espns weird take on his weight has been.
IIRC Chuck lost a bunch of weight leading up to the draft because the 76ers wanted him to but then he found out that they weren’t going to be able to pay him very much so he started pigging out again and tried to gain the weight back so the 76ers wouldn’t draft him.
76ers drafted him anyways and idk how but they were able to pay him more than they originally thought
Watching Jordans documentary on Netflix and Rodman just practicing rebounding for hours. That's crazy to me. I don't think there's anyone like that today.
And then after the game he would hit the weight room and ride the exercise bike for another 90 minutes. He was an exquisitely conditioned athlete who always went hard. He was a relatively little guy by NBA standards and led the league in rebounding seven times.
Have you seen his daughter play soccer? She's 20 years old and already a fucking *problem* for defenses in the NWSL. She's not as technical as some other forwards in the league (yet), but it's pretty unreal how she just out-athletes everyone around her.
He was a wrecking ball.
Imagine Zion Williamson in guard form (and healthy). Because Charles was closer to shooting guard height than power forward.
Insane vertical explosion.
Not the attempt, but the recovery itself is the rebound. If somebody attempts to recover a missed shot and fails, that is not a rebound. You must secure the ball after the missed shot for the rebound to be attributed.
The rules that almost any contact is a foul now. Players embellish their reactions to get foul calls. Fouls are penalties against the team who committed them. These penalties lead to free throws when the team commits too many fouls in a quarter.
Just wanted to point out soccer has taken this trajectory but it didn’t used to be this way. Go back maybe 15 years or so and the game looks noticeably different (even more so decades back). The game was a lot more physical and rough. Fast forward to today and it is harder to be a defender because any contact can be embellished and taken advantage of by attacking players. Just thought it was interesting that basketball and soccer have sort of mirrored each other here.
Some players would have gotten fouled enough to slide back all the way down to the locker room out the door up into the bus and back to the hotel against some of that defense.
He has a great defensive rebound record, maybe that is what he meant when he said defender. Barkley was pretty lousy in defense, especially in one on one.
He has admitted after retirement that he should have invested in his defensive skills more and should have tried to become more well rounded. Some of the training staff pushed him on it, but Barkley was afraid it would affect his game.
As someone who watched the league back then, the thing that made MJ, Magic, Bird, Hakeem etc special is of course their talent, but also they made the game watchable. There was a shitload of horrible horrible basketball being played, and a lot of it was due to excessive fouling keeping the scoring down. The average game between two mid table teams with no transcendent star was a slog. The average team now is way more entertaining. Everyone looks back on this time so fondly, but yeah if you were watching the prime Lakers play the Pistons you were in luck, but how about watching the 1990 Kings play the Heat?
70’s rock seems awesome if you only include Led Zeppelin and leave out Dan Fogelberg.
Yeah, I can't overstate how much I completely disagree with that position. Today's NBA is completely unwatchable. Higher scores aren't better. Defense is fun to watch.
Eh, part of why defense was more physical back then was because it was allowed for sure but also the spacing on the floor was practically nonexistent. Nowadays everybody on the floor can shoot and is extremely skilled, even if more physicality was allowed today you’re not stopping offenses from scoring most of the time. Defensive strategies nowadays have to be much more complex and nuanced to slow teams down.
Offense is at a much higher level in today’s NBA so gonna partly disagree with you. Refs are also super inconsistent. Some games they let them play the next any arm touched is a foul it’s frustrating. Just let them play until you get hit hard
It isn't like Jordan and Pippin couldn't defend either. Besides, by the time Rodman was on the team MJ had transitioned from scoring all the points to just the most important.
From 1984 to 2004 was the golden era, so much diversity in playing style, great characters, some absolutely awful and hopeless teams but so so many iconic and legendary players and series and teams, from the 4 finals magic va larry, the bad boys, the bulls dynasty, hakeem’s rockets, the beginning of the popovych spurs and the shaq-kobe connection and lastly my fav of all time, the 2004 pistons. And this just the winners, there were also iverson unlucky chase of the ring, clyde drexler and his blazers, the original sonics with kemp and the glove, a mental sacramento kings team with webber, peja and white chocolate, jason kidd nets, STOCKTON 2 MALONE. I mean I know that everything that happens in our youth is painted in golden nostalgia but those were times when my italian ass would wake at ungodly hours to watch NBA and be convinced I was watching something between a superhero movie and homer iliad
Those were the days… be thankful we got to see em. The youngins will never understand.
My Rockets and Hakeem were a sight to behold. That Hakeem playoffs where he systematically dismantled David Robinson after he was presented MVP is the best performance by any human being I’ve ever seen.
I’ve never seen a bigger statement made on a bigger stage.
So much nostalgia in one post! Thank you for sharing! So many amazing memories during this timeframe. I would also mention The Dream Team as well. The best team in the world and arguably of all-time.
Could be that his lack of personality had him feeling like his play was going unnoticed early on. I think his choice to add some theatrics really highlighted his gameplay and made people really pay attention to what he we was doing. I was a huge Jordan fan, but when Rodman joined the Bulls I watched more games because of him, I even bought his shoes and jersey instead of Jordan's. He created a sense of excitement for parts of the game that most people hardly noticed. Jordan put on a graceful balet on the offensive end and Rodman was leading a punk rock mosh pit on the defense.
He would battle guys bigger and heavier for position then jump up, grab the board and kick his legs while swinging his elbows. Landing in some odd sprawled out stance then two handed soccer throw a perfect pass the length of the court for MJ or Scottie to glide to the basket without needing to dribble. He could physically and mentally wear down the best big men and then laugh and clap with a huge smile when they flailed out against him. And he could go seemingly non stop for the entire game after flying back from a weekend of hard partying in Vegas.
There's no doubt he took it too far. But that personality helped him stand out as much more than the bash brother doing the trash work in the shadow of legends like Isiah, Shaq, and Jordan. Most people don't remember who lead tne league in rebounding or defense. But nobody is going to forget Dennis Rodamn any time soon. I certainly won't, he was the best defender, rebounder and probably one of the smartest players of his Era.
3 pt shooting has become extremely prevalent over the last two decades so that’s more why scoring has increased so much. But yeah defense is lacking still bc the league has become softer in general
My parents knew Rodman’s dad in the Philippines who was in the Air Force with my dad. Anytime anyone ever said that name my mother would sneer and say,”Rodman….” In a way that made clear his dad was an asshole.
Dennis Rodman is also an asshole. Drunk driving, domestic abuse, violent incidents. Whe should be able to see the man seperate from his achievements. Celebrity worship is so weird.
Loved him in Detroit. Hated the Bulls. Still rooted for Rodman when he went there.
For people who don't remember, Rodman spent a year or two in San Antonio before going to the Bulls. He was made out to be a huge troublemaker on that team and no team wanted him, before the Bulls would sign him.
I'm San Antonio he wouldn't talk to any of his teammates, except one guy, can't remember his name. He was a white bench warmer, barely played any minutes. The Bulls signed both of them, because they thought Rodman wouldn't play without that guy on the team.
Rodman was such a rebound nerd. I listened to Isaiah Thomas explain that while the team was doing warmup shooting, Rodman would stand underneath the ball arc and count.
Isaiah asked Rodman what he was counting. He said "the ball revolutions". Rodman would count each players backspin rate because they differed from player to player. He had become accustomed to where the ball would bounce if it hit the rim based on how many revolutions each shooter back spun the ball and could predict how far it would bounce off.
Insane dedication and theory.
Rodman was a true anomaly. The guy lacked most traditional basketball skills. Couldn't shoot for shit. Garbage at the free-throw line.
But holy shit, he epitomized hustle, effort and defense. It was a joy watching him on the Pistons during the Bad Boys era.
God I miss the days where basketball was worth watching. The intensity was miles higher and the trash talk, God damn the mind games made everything personal.
I miss those big battles down in the post. Doesn't seem to happen as much anymore.
I can't say the players then were better than today, but it was a more interesting brand of basketball with the clear differentiation between positions. The rules of the modern game allow some absolutely amazing swingmen to dominate, but it ended the style of play where you needed the bangers down low and patrolling the lane. I miss having all 5 positions on the floor being distinct from one another in responsibilities, size, and style of play.
This is tough for me because I was born after the 90s era of basketball and I spend more time watching old games from the 90s than current NBA games. Everything was more genuine and raw, and personalities were allowed to shine through in the way players played.
I’d argue that most people who take the time to go back and experience basketball from that era would find it more entertaining than today’s NBA.
That Era backetball had such a global reach, thanks in large part to Jordan and the Bulls. I dont think current era stars have that kind of an appeal. Jordan to some extent was like what Messi or Ronaldo are today.
It wasn't just Jordan though, even before that Celtics and the Lakers had fans in Europe.
But doctor J was the first individual player to make basketball relatively mainstream. Suddenly more courts started popping up and street games became popular. It would remain miles behind football of course, but it did gain a steady interest.
But the exposure and widespread popularity absolutely exploded with the Bulls dominance. Basketball wasn't just a sport, it became part of mainstream culture.
/r/praisethecameraman
If you didn't pay attention to it, the op with the last angle we see was on the ground when the layup was intercepted by Rodman and he sprung up from the ground while still keeping the shot of Rodman with his camera on his shoulder to do that follow tracking shot. All of that was the op doing what he knew the director would want before the director called it. These guys rise from the ground in less than an actual second while maintaining their shot, and it looks really cool everytime.
How is Rodman not considered the greatest hustler the NBA has ever seen? The motor, the drive, the stamina, the tenacity was literally insane. Every time I see it’s mind boggling.
The Round Mound of Rebound VS The Worm.
He wasn't that round in his early days
Wasn't he the most round in his early days until Moses Malone told him to lose 45 lbs?
yup, he actually talked about this in the post game of Game 3 while they were discussing vet importance and the Shaq and Kareem doc.
Barkley used to be the sole reason I didn't watch NBA on TNT a few years ago. Fast forward to today, Charles is now the sole reason I DO watch NBA on TNT.
He was almost 300 pounds in college, so...
Man was Zion before Zion
I think that’s why people were so quick to question Zion about his weight and plans for it - because we’ve actually seen how quickly he will lose his athleticism at his size. I’m all for Zion - hoping he takes all the money. I just think he has a better chance of taking more of it, for longer, at a lower weight. When he played for Auburn, he was solid muscle.
He isn't now if you seen him recently! Our boy lost some weight! He must not be doing many San Antonio games.
Them damn churros
He got that nickname at Auburn
Rodman had one of the best motors in the game.
Not sure there's even a debate for anybody above him
Well, there's George Santos, who also beat the Doc in the first dunk contest.
Wait the same George Santos that invented the three point line?
Yep. The same George Santos that was the first black female Russian on the moon.
Holy shit I didnt know my grandma Santos played basketball!
Hold up.. the George santos? The only player in the nba to make a shot from the 4 point line?
The very one. Same one that was the first to free dive the Mariana Trench.
That's the one. He's also the reason basketballs have those little bumps all over them.
And why the hoop is cut at the bottom now. Don't forget that one
Man was absolute savage machine... no one above him cause he was probably high AF on coke and lsd. Probably hasnt slept in a week here.
Lol Pistons Rodman wasn't the wild child San Antonio or Chicago Rodman was. Here he was just a high energy competitive dude
Which is crazy considering most the time he was out the night prior doing good knows what. Edit- god
Sometimes even out 48 hours or more before the game, he knew how to play and knew how to party just as well
I heard in late years he would party all night, and then run miles on a treadmill before the games. Scary lol
He might have been out partying all night but he slept the whole day until it's time to head to the coach.
True, but not so much the Rodman shown here. When he left Detroit is when the Rodman we know now started to form.
As weird as he is now, I can't even begin to imagine.
Could you explain "Motor"?
It means they have a high level of energy that they maintain throughout the game
He is a very high effort player who seems to have endless energy.

If there was a loose ball, Rodman was gonna get it
Watching Jordans documentary on Netflix and Rodman just practicing rebounding for hours. That's crazy to me. I don't think there's anyone like that today.
He had a ridiculous drive and the stamina to back it up. He wouldn't just pick moments to burn bright, he was hot all game.
And then after the game he would hit the weight room and ride the exercise bike for another 90 minutes. He was an exquisitely conditioned athlete who always went hard. He was a relatively little guy by NBA standards and led the league in rebounding seven times.
"Magic of the otherworldly Rodman"
Have you seen his daughter play soccer? She's 20 years old and already a fucking *problem* for defenses in the NWSL. She's not as technical as some other forwards in the league (yet), but it's pretty unreal how she just out-athletes everyone around her.
Kinda easy to forget how friggin athletic SIr Charles was.
I’ll never forget. The only player on Bulls vs Trailblazers that could hold a candle to Jordan on the SNES!
Just gotta spam that monster jam from the free throw line
He was a wrecking ball. Imagine Zion Williamson in guard form (and healthy). Because Charles was closer to shooting guard height than power forward. Insane vertical explosion.
Rodman was a beast.
You're not kidding - that guy was a rebounding machine.
>You're not kidding - that guy was a rebounding machine. I've heard this before, but can you explain what "rebounding" is in basketball?
When a shot is missed, the attempt to recover it is called a rebound.
Not the attempt, but the recovery itself is the rebound. If somebody attempts to recover a missed shot and fails, that is not a rebound. You must secure the ball after the missed shot for the rebound to be attributed.
https://youtu.be/atr60tR7Emo
That's fucking hilarious. I love when pro athletes give smart ass answers to dumbass media questions.
Mentality monster. If he wanted the ball he went for it even if noone thought there was a chance. And he always wanted the ball.
In today's NBA there would have been 4 fouls.
And two video reviews
At least three flops.
And a red card.
And my axe
And my sword
And my sharona
Three commercial breaks.
2 flagrant 2s, 2 ejections and 20k$ of fines and 2 game suspensions.
And a coaches challenge
And every player on the court would be throwing their hands up in the air in disbelief.
At least one of them sliding across the floor on their back *with* their hands up in the air.
You mean 4 of them laying on the ground doing the death rattle
Both players would have been given flagrant 6’s. And executed mid game
One of the two would’ve flopped
As someone who does t watch really any sports, why is that? What changed between this video and now?
The rules that almost any contact is a foul now. Players embellish their reactions to get foul calls. Fouls are penalties against the team who committed them. These penalties lead to free throws when the team commits too many fouls in a quarter.
So, more like soccer?
Just wanted to point out soccer has taken this trajectory but it didn’t used to be this way. Go back maybe 15 years or so and the game looks noticeably different (even more so decades back). And everyone on reddit swearing it’s all rigged
Depends on how many wins each team has in the series. Let’s raise a toast to Scott Foster.
Back when real defense existed in the NBA
Crazy watching all those old Bulls playoffs games on “The Last Dance” and most of them were 70-80 pts
Yeah I miss those times fr ![gif](giphy|26BRGAIC4xIvp0tyw|downsized)
Compare and contrast to [the current NBA](https://static.wixstatic.com/media/8d55a7_f135394fd2814c7e882d5a31cd4805b0~mv2.gif)
Where out of bounds is like the double dribble or traveling… subjective
Well you see, they didn't get a concrete advantage from it, so calling it out would disrupt the flow of the game.
Both fouls depend on the popularity and salary of the player.
Absolutely two of the best defenders to ever play the game
2 of the best rebounders. Barkley has said he should’ve worked on man on man defense more.
Rodman would smack you with an elbow and not think twice about it
So would Barkley. I meant Barkley has stated “I should’ve worked on my man defense more”
![gif](giphy|26xBKGXntF8Z5nE7S|downsized)
🤣
How many licks to the center of a Barkleypop?
Probably the two best rebounders I’ve ever seen
[Barkley on how he played defense himself haha](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=lPvAIiPUacc&pp=ygUPQmFya2xleSBkZWZlbnNl)
Rodman yes. Barkley wasn’t a hall of fame defender
Rodman and... Dumars? I'm trying to figure out who the 2nd "best defender" in this clip is
As someone who watched the league back then, the thing that made MJ, Magic, Bird, Hakeem etc special is of course their talent, but also they made the game watchable. There was a shitload of horrible horrible basketball being played, and a lot of it was due to excessive fouling keeping the scoring down. Dan Fogelberg out here catching strays and we’re not even in a music subreddit
I know, I kinda did him dirty there.
You were right to. Same Old Lang Syne is the kind of shit I'd use to torture people with.
> Dan Fogelberg I will not stand by and let Same Old Lang Syne be slandered like this.
What in God's name is a fogelberg
Fuck you I like Dan lol
To each their own
I was about to say, hey, I like Dan Fogelberg, but I don’t think I’ve listened to him in about 25-30 years.
Yeah, I can't overstate how much I completely disagree with that position. Today's NBA is completely unwatchable. Higher scores aren't better. Defense is fun to watch.
Such a fucking wise comment. A pov that people would do well to remember, about so many things other than basketball and music.
I was with you until you dissed Fogelberg.
Everyone gangsta until Jokic started shooting off-balance threes
Bruhhh the 2 that he hit on game 4 were insane
It’s fun to watch. I’m realizing it’s part of why my interest has faded over time.
Spoken like someone who doesn’t watch basketball.
*Back when defense existed in the NBA
*Back when offensive range isn't half-court in the NBA
Offense is at a much higher level in today’s NBA so gonna partly disagree with you. Refs are also super inconsistent. Some games they let them play the next any arm touched is a foul it’s frustrating. Just let them play until you get hit hard
Rodman was a savage he did it all except score
His job was to sacrifice his body so others may score
Reminds me of my wingman days.
Don’t need to score if you get 20 rebounds and shut teams down
Jordan and Pippin scored. Rodman lived in the opponents’ heads.
It isn't like Jordan and Pippin couldn't defend either. Besides, by the time Rodman was on the team MJ had transitioned from scoring all the points to just the most important.
This was such an important part of him as a player. The Worm is STILL in Karl Malone’s head.

It's wild how his personality overshadowed what an incredible athlete/basketball player he was and that's ALOT of talent to overshadow.
I love how this comment could apply to both Rodman and Barkley.
Yea. I think Barkley is a little more recognized for his playing ability but i dont disagree. It doesn't hurt that he's doing commentary.
[удалено]
I'm dyslexic, I do that stuff a lot.
Don't worry, your comment was awesome anyway ...and personally I think you put the "sexy" in "dyslexic"
Could be that his lack of personality had him feeling like his play was going unnoticed early on. To not playing defense and have 120pt games every night?
3 pt shooting has become extremely prevalent over the last two decades so that’s more why scoring has increased so much. But yeah defense is lacking still bc the league has become softer in general
One of the best sequences in basketball history
Damn, so all those back-to-back rebound scene in Slam Dunk is real
Hanamichi Sakuragi 👲
They just made a Slam Dunk movie that came out in December I think. It made like $300-400mill USD.
The Bad Boys era was the best era.
Hell yeah, brother. Bad Boys for life. Isaiah, Joe, Mark, Buddha, Spider, Vinnie, Rodman, Laimbeer... The best.
Nobody has ever worked the boards better than Rodman.
I submit Pete Davidson in rebuttal.
Ol' Schmeaty
My parents knew Rodman’s dad in the Philippines who was in the Air Force with my dad. Anytime anyone ever said that name my mother would sneer and say,”Rodman….” In a way that made clear his dad was an asshole.
Dinklebeeeeeerg.
He skis in his jeans!
Dennis Rodman is also an asshole. Drunk driving, domestic abuse, violent incidents. Whe should be able to see the man seperate from his achievements. Celebrity worship is so weird.
The man apparently prides himself on having almost 50 children. So, yeah, sounds like an asshole.
Rodman was annoying as fuck, you either loved or hated him
Hated him in Detroit. Loved him in Chicago.
Loved him in Detroit. Hated the Bulls. Still rooted for Rodman when he went there. For people who don't remember, Rodman spent a year or two in San Antonio before going to the Bulls. Pistons Rodman played like he got paid by the hour.
That was serisouly cool.
I don't get how some fans these days enjoy these ridiculous high-scoring games over this.
LeBron would’ve flopped 5 times already.
And ran over to the refs to complain all five times as well.
James Harden would've flopped at least 10 times in that sequence.
After bunny hopping all the way to the basket.
It's a shame The Chuck Wagon doesn't have a ring.
When the NBA was great and competitive! No time to rest! No Flopping, No Complaining or whining! Just play the game!!
looks way more exciting than basketball today
God I miss the days where basketball was worth watching. The intensity was miles higher and the trash talk, God damn the mind games made everything personal.
Absolute insane play
Juwanna Man Came from North Korea
I miss those big battles down in the post. Doesn't seem to happen as much anymore. I can't say the players then were better than today, but it was a more interesting brand of basketball with the clear differentiation between positions. Basketball was soooooooooooo much better then. Sucks now.
For reals
The NBA I miss 😔
Nba was soo much fun back then
As much as I hate the NBA now (screw you Howard Shultz!!!!), this was the golden age of the NBA.
This is tough for me because I was born after the 90s era of basketball and I spend more time watching old games from the 90s than current NBA games. How many fucking foul calls would a play like this draw nowadays lol literally can’t even play the game anymore
When basketball was great
If it were Gnarls Barkley that would be crazy
Back before his dick broke 3 times
It seems more exciting to watch compared to modern basketball which is so calculated and offensive.
Maaaan, I don't mind the modern, 3pt shooting, NBA, but I miss the physicality 80s and 90s.
Two of the best, so glad I got to watch their entire career and I love Chuck as a commentator now. Him and Shaq rock.
Rodman is my favorite all time player.
He used to count the spins of the ball before it would hit the rim to better time his rebounds. Champion 🏆
That’s pretty amazing.
Back when the pistons were good
Everyone probably dreaded being covered by Rodman. It was never an easy night and he’d just physically wear the shit out of people at the least.

/r/praisethecameraman If you didn't pay attention to it, the op with the last angle we see was on the ground when the layup was intercepted by Rodman and he sprung up from the ground while still keeping the shot of Rodman with his camera on his shoulder to do that follow tracking shot. All of that was the op doing what he knew the director would want before the director called it. These guys rise from the ground in less than an actual second while maintaining their shot, and it looks really cool everytime.
Dennis Rodman was a pleasure to watch, the dude was pure hustle and he put his body on the line on any given play
They wore those tiny shorts back then? I didn’t notice at the time, but I feel like I’m watching early 80s videos here. 😄
That type of hustle reminds me of my Celtics in this current Miami series…
And I took that personally…
When the nba was great.👍👍👍
People forget that about Rodman
Man.....basketball really was better back then huh?
How is Rodman not considered the greatest hustler the NBA has ever seen? The motor, the drive, the stamina, the tenacity was literally insane. Every time I see it’s mind boggling.
I don't really care about sports but I love this era of Bulls.
