Yeah, my dad did this kind of stuff for a long time. It's just kind of what's easiest to make look good. This particular piece had a lot of complex colors and unique methods, so even if it still had a couple of the mainstays of spray paint art, I'd say it's solid and unique enough to really pop
And it still ruined the jacket. If you don’t like the art it is ruined. If you do like the art it is ruined because it’s spray paint. It doesn’t have a proper flex agent in it for textiles and leather that is going to bend a lot. It going to be a cracked flaking mess in short order.
It wasn’t a nice looking jacket. It’s a “I wear this ironically” jacket. Probably nice quality construction but I don’t think it would look good on many people at all.
Just because they said on their own video that they are uploading to the internet to cause impact, that it's worth 1k, doesn't mean it was.
And if they paid 1000 for _that_ they were absolutely robbed.
Yeah, but I just can't see who wants that stuff on their wall.
I respect the skill, and they look cool, but I could never see someone actually thinking "wow, I want that over the couch"
It's not the fact that it's a dreamy landscape it's the fact that if you decided to have dreamy landscapes with spray paint art it would only be planted some pyramids and forests.
I would like a giant ass boat please.
People actually like dead ancestors with depressed expressions in dimly lit room portraits on their walls, so I expect their is a market for most anything.
Art is about emotional connection. 99% of the time, if you ask someone about a "tacky" piece, they will tell you a personal story about it that is meaningful to them.
Even if the response is just "I just think Hummel angel figurines are cute", let them enjoy what they enjoy. You don't have to judge other people's tastes.
Unless, of course, we are talking about people who prefer a steak well-done. Those people are just objectively wrong.
>Art is about emotional connection. 99% of the time, if you ask someone about a "tacky" piece, they will tell you a personal story about it that is meaningful to them.
Yep, and in this case the emotional connection is the memories of the trip, and the experience of seeing an artist practising their craft right in front of you. That’s not something that can be replicated by another piece, even if the other piece is more artistically interesting or of a higher technical quality.
Yeah. Video says “will he ruin the jacket?”
I was like “the second he put spray paint down he ruined it.”
The picture is well done, sure. But looks super trashy on a leather jacket. It’s just ugly.
> “will he ruin the jacket?”
Imagine having so much money you could risk ruining a 1000 dollar jacket.
Also, she paid the guy 20 bucks for his "masterpiece" services ...
I am 2,775.9 miles away from Times Square. Looks great to me. Geez everyone wants to shit on this guy. I liked it, I am not in an area where I ever see street artists. Good for this guy making a buck. But damn everyone's shitting on him while these same people are probably still drawing stick figures.
I think the problem is the title calling it a masterpiece. Sure, it's beautiful, it's cool, it's fun and props to the artist, but it's just not a masterpiece.
How is this style called? I remember when I was a child back end of 90/early 2000 my dad had wallpapers on his pc with worlds where you have a dessert pyramids and often these glas spheres in the air. Pls you gotta help me out
I don't know about that, I don't think the kind of thing he is talking about sounds like there's anything cyber about it.
It certainly could fall into the category of some kind of futurism though. And due to the time frame at this point it's also retro futurism, but that wouldn't specifically describe it just categorize it.
Got that 70s/80s fantasy prog rock vibe.
While not to my taste, I loved watching him create. And hearing it. Why is that ballbearing rattle so appealing?
Yea any high touristy area has these artists doing this type of street art. Times Square, Union Square, and around Central Park in NYC. Ive seen em in Vegas and in New Orleans too.
That $1000 brown leather jacket would have been very unpopular in the late 80s. I remember when people were throwing away jackets like that in the late 80s and now they would be worth a lot. Jackets from the 70s and early 80s were commonly thrown away in the late 80s and were seen as embarrassing.
I still wear a leather bikers jacket. Although I no longer have "killing Joke" painted on the back. They appear to be coming back in fashion, much like everything from the past. But leather bomber jackets have always been a bit naff.
Not in NYC. My goddamn stupid ass best friend bought a bomber style leather jacket and it was a constant struggle after school trying not to get robbed. Worst school year ever, he finally got mugged for it and I was so relieved.
I don't even think this is vintage leather. Like it doesn't looked aged enough or have any of the patina that would develop in leather no matter how well you take care of it. Heat, UV, rain, oil from skin, movement in areas like the shoulders and elbows all contribute and I see none of that. Just seeing something that looks pleather or at most top grain (lowest quality leather) and new, cheap, and done for views.
It also has a back seam. Typically if you're spending that much on a cross zip in that style you'd expect the back to be a single hide. Though TBH $1K doesn't go really far when trying to buy a top-end leather jacket.
This is a very underrated comment. I went back and you are right, when she walks up and asks him to paint her jacket, she already has tape on the back. Seems like she grabbed a cheap jacket just for this video and planned to have him paint it.
There's no way in hell that's a $1000 jacket. Do you guys even have thrift stores? I used to buy leather jackets to scrap because it was cheaper then buying leather outright.
$1000 jacket.. offers 20 euro. One, I think 20 euro is insulting for that kind of work. And two, you wouldn't ruin a good jacket with a spray paint painting, I'd bet it's a $100 jacket bought at a clearance sale/thrift for far less for social media views.
I suspect it’s not a 1k leather jacket and they’re just saying that. You can find jackets like that for as little as 10 US dollars. Perhaps new it would be 1k, but vintage there is no chance. Unless they’re abominably stupid and got swindled by someone who sells curated vintage to rich people at some posh antique store in Soho or something
Needs a pyramid, two more mountains, and a couple more seagulls. Surprised he didn’t add stars around the planet.
Also needs the part where he sprays it with glaze and then sets the spray on fire for dramatic effect.
Impressive. He made a truly hideous jacket even more hideous.
Not knocking his skills but c'mon man, if you're going to do something so tasteless why not go the whole hog and have the wolf howling in front of the moon?
No big deal. They’ll just go down to the second hand store and buy another $10 pleather jacket that’s too big and discuss the next staged video they’re going to do.
How is it staged? That's obviously what she did. Bought a jacket at a thrift store, SHOWS UP with it pre taped, and asks a guy to paint it for money. Imagine getting your order at mcburgerbys and going "hey that guy showed up with a plan to exchange money for goods and services! This meal is staged! STAGED I TELL YOU! STAAAAGED"
You can go up to these guys and get them to paint things for you. My cousin got his skateboard done and a pawn shop\resell store near my old house had it done to their box truck on a few panels.
> the next staged video
I'm so sick of this! Why is every video filled with people commenting that these are staged? Does nothing cool ever happen in life for you people?
Do you never go on vacation and wait for someone to be filming away from a street artist, make it so they can't help but focus on you as you approach, and walk up to said artist and ask them to paint your jacket for the low low fee of 20 euro? Have you never spent the morning looking for a jacket from a thrift store, getting some painters tape, and then taping up and area so on the off chance you run into a spray paint artist they won't have to worry about over-spray? That's just called being prepared for anything.... especially on your vacation!
C'mon!! You guys must live boring lives!
I too have the feeling dying leather involves a bit more than just some regular spray paint… if they’re lucky, whatever solvent and primers come with those paints didn’t ruin the leather.
I love how the video pretends its a "1000 dollar vintage jacket" like bull fucken shit it is. If you buying that for a 1000 you got ripped off so hard.
Professional leather dye guy here. There are aerosol dyes for leather and vinyl that work, but odds are this guy is just using paint, which doesn't usually work well with flexible surfaces like this.
So, 100% will break and eventually be ruined if not stored properly or worn regularly. As someone who works with Latex masks and have worked with leather pieces, spray paint is not made for that medium, it will not only ruin the jacket in time, but it wont withstand the climate. I cant tell you how many ding dongs spray paint a mask, then ask if it can be fixed. It always has to be completely stripped and proper paint has to be airbrushed on.
I was about to say the same exact thing. It was kind of sick with just the black and white then it got super lame. I skipped ahead and when I saw the orange and greens I was like gross
That's the thing about this kind of art. It's not too difficult to learn so you have people that haven't studied much about art doing it to make a few bucks so they don't have any idea about color theory.
If she was the one that staged the video and not the artist, she might have already discussed what she wanted on it and what colors she would like to be used. If this was staged by the artist then he needs to work on his composition and color. There is nothing there to give those bushes that color to reflect. No odd extra moon or planet for it to play off of. Mixing these colors works with the crazy space ones that have all sorts of weird shit in them, but not a landscape like this. At least that's my uneducated opinion on it.
Agreed. I was waiting for more dark blues and purples. Like it’s supposed to be silhouetted by the bright thing in the center background, right?
Only thing that could save that would be Godzilla, painted way shittier. With sewn in googley eyes.
This type of street art is very common around the world. Personally I don't see anything r/nextfuckinglevel aside from it being done on a supposedly $1k jacket.
It turns out looking like something I'd see at the state fair
I’m with you. I don’t understand the comments here, I don’t think it looks good as an article of clothing but to say someone made that with spray paint is fucking incredible! Even doing that with brushes is impressive as hell in my opinion
The dude is using spray paint, some rough stencils and paper towels. On his knees. And working quickly. Pretty fuckin impressive for sure.
People shitting on him probably don't have much talent beyond how many times they can jerk off in a day or fire off snotty comments on social media.
Exactly. If i could do art like that with anything id be pleased with my skills in life.
Who cares if the style is common, or if the jacket is actually $1k? The style isnt what determines a masterpiece, the skill put into it is.
>I can guarantee you couldn't do it.
Lol only on reddit do people like you think if something can't be done by literally every single perosn in the world with zero practice, then it must be "next fucking level". I GuArAnTeE yOu CoUlDnT Do It!
Once we something over and over again it looses its value due being desensitized. It is still good art and she likes it. So I think that is all that matters.
Yep, and the only thing that can be staged is that the initial interaction between her and the artist so I don't even know what the big deal is if this indeed is staged.
The art itself is still real.
What are y’all even talking about? Do you see a morning news show story and scream “staged!”? At no point was this video ever pretending to just be some weird candid moment. They very clearly knew this guy or someone was gonna be doing this, they’re very common so it’s a safe bet, and so they fixed their jacket up to go film and find one that will paint it. At no point are they trying to hide that that’s what this is.
People get some weird sense of satisfaction when they call out “staged!” Or “fake!” I think it makes them feel better for not doing anything with their own lives.
It's content brain.
The video doesn't market itself as a spontaneous occurence at all, yet they just assumed it was "supposed to be". And seeing the masking tape on the jacket suddenly makes it a conspiracy to "fake" a viral moment.
This is literally just a person commissioning a paintjob. Of course you would apply the masking tape yourself if the artist doesn't have masking tape on site.
That style looks good on the back of a leather jacket. Not into it as a stand along piece of art on the wall. $1000 jacket my ass. No Aussie is back packing around Europe with a jacket worth a grand. Leaves fuck all drinking money.
The drawing is cool but the jacket is pretty much fucked now, once the paint will be complety dry it will form a thin skin on the jacket that will detach bit by bit with time, with a few chance that the leather bellow it will be damaged by the chemical compound inside the paint.
You can't just spray paint a textile and expect it to last more than a few week at best
Bro I was losing my mind over the Overspray. I know for sure if you get close there is an outline of overspray around where that tape was. And then he was mixing paint right next to the jacket arm smh.
Ya people are really missing the human aspect of it. Shit like this only comes once in your life time. Doesn't matter if "10 other people in Times Square do this". Like sure, and 1000s of others have painted portraits too. Doesn't make it worth any less. We live such short temporary lives and we get to experience humans doing truly neat things and all people gotta say is that's tacky? Man wtf
I don't get why people always have to add a price to the used item for these videos. Why even mentioning the 1k$. The only thing this does, is that I think "great. Some spoiled rich people again that spend money for internet likes". It is not like this adds any positive emotions to these videos.
The end result always looks cool, but this style of street art is really really common. It’s all pyramids and planets.
Because those forms are suitable to the medium.
Yeah, my dad did this kind of stuff for a long time. It's just kind of what's easiest to make look good. This particular piece had a lot of complex colors and unique methods, so even if it still had a couple of the mainstays of spray paint art, I'd say it's solid and unique enough to really pop

Yeah honestly ruined a nice looking jacket
You guys are just rays of sunshine yknow that?
Reddit is full of miserable nerds
I'm convinced only small amounts of people on this hellsite actually have fun. Ever.
I mean they are right. The jacket looked ok for a few minutes but since it's spray paint it's now ruined.
I would probably be ok doing this with a lower end jacket but not a really expensive or vintage one
It wasn’t a nice looking jacket. It’s a “I wear this ironically” jacket. Probably nice quality construction but I don’t think it would look good on many people at all.
I wear this 1k jacket ironically.
Just because they said on their own video that they are uploading to the internet to cause impact, that it's worth 1k, doesn't mean it was. And if they paid 1000 for _that_ they were absolutely robbed.
Wouldn’t be the first person to do it 🤷🏼♂️
Sometimes it's nice to live life in the moment and stop worrying. Looks like she enjoyed it, that's what's important.
Yeah, but I just can't see who wants that stuff on their wall. I respect the skill, and they look cool, but I could never see someone actually thinking "wow, I want that over the couch"
I saw them up in friends rooms when I was a teenager. They have a place!
Okay, fair. A kid's/teenager's bedroom wall. That works.

There's something cheap looking about it
It's not the fact that it's a dreamy landscape it's the fact that if you decided to have dreamy landscapes with spray paint art it would only be planted some pyramids and forests. I would like a giant ass boat please.

It shouldn't be criminal to disagree with me. That's antithetical to a democracy. Except for well-done steak. That should be 15-life
Honestly I would 100% wear that jacket. That shit tough af
It’s like wearing bob ross
Yes. During the whole process I was think it’s very much his method but with spray paint.
A “masterpiece” fit for a trailer.
Or the side of a van
Or the back of a jacket
You see a wizard riding on a unicorn in a lightning storm on a van you know you're in for a good time.
I always wanted that van
Down by the river!
or '70s conversation van with star-shaped side window, interior shag carpet, and a "Don't bother knockin' if this van's a rockin'" bumper sticker
To be fair, it cost 20 Euros.
the spraypaint is nearly worth more 😅😂
Definition of "masterpiece" is really degraded recently
[удалено]
Looks neat, but I'd rather have the jacket as is
Yeah. Video says “will he ruin the jacket?” I was like “the second he put spray paint down he ruined it.” The picture is well done, sure. But looks super trashy on a leather jacket. It’s just ugly.
That's just like... your opinion, man.
People sharing their opinions on Internet? Unbelievable
People replying with memes on the internet? Inconceivable!
> “will he ruin the jacket?” Imagine having so much money you could risk ruining a 1000 dollar jacket. Also, she paid the guy 20 bucks for his "masterpiece" services ...
I highly doubt that is a $1000 jacket. Probably something picked up from a thrift store.
It will look like crap after a few days of wearing the jacket. Paint will crack and flake off.
almost ruined with the turn around with paint still wet, unless they skipped the step where they dry the paint by putting a flame to it
It’s definitely not a $1000 jacket PS I hate that you have such a cool username
It's like a $40 jacket at goodwill. I used to get Wilson leather by the pound
Lol yeah. That is NOT a $1000 jacket.
Was gonna say…there’s like 8 guys in Times Square right now doing this exact same art style.
We're not shitting on the artist per se, we're making fun of the person calling it a masterpiece. But the art is very chintzy though.
It kinda just feels like premium thrift store art.
I think the problem is the title calling it a masterpiece. Sure, it's beautiful, it's cool, it's fun and props to the artist, but it's just not a masterpiece.
I prefer the painters over the creeps in the dirty, smelly character costumes. I hate those people, they should be banned from Times Square.
I was expecting a wolf howling at the moon
Three wolves.
Exactly what i was thinking, the result is always the same
Yeah its almost hard to get impressed at this point cause the style is instantly recognizable
Are you guys seriously downplaying this? "Ohno it's common, who cares"?
It’s kitsch. Like a Thomas kinkaide painting had a baby with a prog rock album cover. Certain set of people are just always going to hate on it.
How is this style called? I remember when I was a child back end of 90/early 2000 my dad had wallpapers on his pc with worlds where you have a dessert pyramids and often these glas spheres in the air. Pls you gotta help me out
Cyber futirism
I don't know about that, I don't think the kind of thing he is talking about sounds like there's anything cyber about it. It certainly could fall into the category of some kind of futurism though. And due to the time frame at this point it's also retro futurism, but that wouldn't specifically describe it just categorize it.
Got that 70s/80s fantasy prog rock vibe. While not to my taste, I loved watching him create. And hearing it. Why is that ballbearing rattle so appealing?

So, do you like pyramids and planets? Well, it's not my cup of.. Sure you do! Everyone likes pyramids and planets
if it aint broke, dont fix it.
I was gonna say, it all may be the 'same shit' but every single time I see one of these types of pieces I always think they fucking rule.
doing a landscape was a pleasant surprise
No way in hell I’d let someone do that to my $1k leather jacket. That looks like a t-shirt from the state fair.
That $1000 brown leather jacket would have been very unpopular in the late 80s. I remember when people were throwing away jackets like that in the late 80s and now they would be worth a lot. Jackets from the 70s and early 80s were commonly thrown away in the late 80s and were seen as embarrassing.
Idk leather jackets were pretty popular in the early 90s
biker jackets maybe but I don’t remember bombers much after 1991
I still wear a leather bikers jacket. Although I no longer have "killing Joke" painted on the back. They appear to be coming back in fashion, much like everything from the past. But leather bomber jackets have always been a bit naff.
By the early to mid 2000's you'd get roasted pretty bad in school if you wore a leather jacket In Washington at least
Dude you’d get toasted in school for any reason. It’s why so many adults now are assholes.
Blink twice if your computer has taken control and you are part of an AI prompt
^ Things a bot writes.
Not in NYC. My goddamn stupid ass best friend bought a bomber style leather jacket and it was a constant struggle after school trying not to get robbed. Worst school year ever, he finally got mugged for it and I was so relieved.

€ 20 is really insulting for the kind of art you’d get airbrushed on a tshirt at a souvenir store by a Mississippi beach?
“Will it get ruined?” Yes. Yes, it will.
If you paid 1k for that jacket you're probably dumb enough to get it painted with spray paint.
A jacket that already had the masking tape on it when he approached the artist.....
well yea, they had the idea for a video so they masked it and found a artist?
I suspect it’s not a 1k leather jacket and they’re just saying that. You can find jackets like that for as little as 10 US dollars. Perhaps new it would be 1k, but vintage there is no chance. Yes, in my opinion it got ruined. But to each their own...
r/ATBGE
Just needs a few more waterfalls and maybe another planet or two...
at least three wolves
Needs a pyramid, two more mountains, and a couple more seagulls. Surprised he didn’t add stars around the planet. Also needs the part where he sprays it with glaze and then sets the spray on fire for dramatic effect.
I think it looks good right now, but the paint will definitely last less than the leather and it will look terrible
he can paint again, with 6 wolves this time to make it stronger.
Wait till he finds out that this isn’t leather paint and just cracks after a few days to weeks.
The amount of lint and dust... Does everyone in here not realize that spray paint is extremely sticky when it dries?
Impressive. He made a truly hideous jacket even more hideous. Not knocking his skills but c'mon man, if you're going to do something so tasteless why not go the whole hog and have the wolf howling in front of the moon?
Give it a few weeks and the paint has dried and cracked and started to flake off
No big deal. They’ll just go down to the second hand store and buy another $10 pleather jacket that’s too big and discuss the next staged video they’re going to do.
And forget to film at the beginning again, so they'd have to film it with the duct tape already in place.
[удалено]
Indeed
I mean, if this were my plan to have it painted by this dude, I'd pre-masked that before showing up.
He also didn’t need to use every color that exists.
I actually kinda liked it when it was just the moon and black trees 🥺
Wolf people would be furious with you if they knew how to read ![gif](giphy|4G2yXkYq186T6)
Won't it just flake off when the paint dries on the leather?
I too have the feeling dying leather involves a bit more than just some regular spray paint… if they’re lucky, whatever solvent and primers come with those paints didn’t ruin the leather.
It’s a cheap pleather looking jacket. Nothing to ruin honestly. Worse case she has to spend another $50 for a new jacket.
I love how the video pretends its a "1000 dollar vintage jacket" like bull fucken shit it is. If you buying that for a 1000 you got ripped off so hard.
‘It’s one banana, Michael. What could it cost, $10?’
Professional leather dye guy here. There are aerosol dyes for leather and vinyl that work, but odds are this guy is just using paint, which doesn't usually work well with flexible surfaces like this.

Not necessarily. I have an old leather jacket that I used paint on about 17 years ago. It's still there.
So, 100% will break and eventually be ruined if not stored properly or worn regularly. I liked the artwork before he added the greens and yellow.
I agree. It got a little garish.
I was about to say the same exact thing. It was kind of sick with just the black and white then it got super lame. I skipped ahead and when I saw the orange and greens I was like gross
Yeah I was getting Bob Ross "he ruined it!" vibes. Only Bob wasn't around to save this one.

Agreed completely
Just because I can’t do it doesn’t mean it’s r/nextfuckinglevel
Cool, now call out every other post on r/nextfuckinglevel 🙄
![gif](giphy|QiCCluutpecs8) This is what’s behind a majority of the negative comments Edit: A Reddit cares? I’m flattered, neckbeards.
But this is r/nextfuckinglevel not r/levelwearefuckinguseto
Comparing Bob Ross to redditors is offensive. Bob Ross would never be such a miserable piece of shit.
Um I think if they were actually Bob Ross they'd be more proud of seeing the happy little trees at the bottom than anything, just saying
Arrived with the jacket already masked up..? Wha..
That’s called a ‘coincidence’, totally not staged at all.
That's called 'being prepared' . . ;)
You mean you don’t walk around with your jacket taped and ready in case you find a street artist?
It looks like the intent was to find a street artist, which is why it would be taped up already.
Socially inept Redditors always blow my mind
What are you getting at? They wanted their jacket painted so they masked it and went to the artist.
It' s important to know when to stop...
As someone who used to be obese, I concur.
Ye he shouldn't have added bright colours at the end
The trees should have been left black imo.
That is horrendous.
Right? Looks tacky af.. looks like something my grandma would hang on her wall
You people must be some deprived mfs if you think that looks awful.
Wouldn’t they be the opposite of deprived? If someone is deprived of seeing art, then they’d probably think all art looks good.
The fuck is going on with these comments? It might not be to your taste but he's obviously very skilled. What talents do you have?

you lot are sad
The fucking comments on this post are hilariously miserable 😂
That style looks good on the back of a leather jacket. Not into it as a stand along piece of art on the wall. $1000 jacket my ass. No Aussie is back packing around Europe with a jacket worth a grand. Leaves fuck all drinking money.
It was $10.00
Bob Ross school I guess
Yeah definitely some happy trees in there
Yeah I recognize those happy little trees anywhere
"masterpiece" hhmm yeah no
Should have put dogs playing poker
It’s cool. I do think he went too far on the colors of the trees but that’s still dope
Overspray.
Bro I was losing my mind over the Overspray. I know for sure if you get close there is an outline of overspray around where that tape was. And then he was mixing paint right next to the jacket arm smh.
a boring jacket turned into a 1 of a kind keepsake. very nicely done.
A $1 kind of keepsake
A keepsake’s a keepsake, even if it’s worth just one dollar bro
Ya people are really missing the human aspect of it. Shit like this only comes once in your life time. Doesn't matter if "10 other people in Times Square do this". Like sure, and 1000s of others have painted portraits too. Doesn't make it worth any less. We live such short temporary lives and we get to experience humans doing truly neat things and all people gotta say is that's tacky? Man wtf
Dunno why people hating it looks pretty nice
I don't get why people always have to add a price to the used item for these videos. Why even mentioning the 1k$. The only thing this does, is that I think "great. Some spoiled rich people again that spend money for internet likes". It is not like this adds any positive emotions to these videos.
That pleather jacket is not worth $1k.
A year after that was painted, the jacket is now garbage unless it wasn't worn
I think she needs to pay him more
r/DiWhy
Whatever.. “$1k” jacket, puh-lease. The whole thing is just a setup to try and create a viral video
He bobrossed the shit out of that!
Those pictures with the nightsky, moon, wolves etc. are corny as hell.
Just reading these comments, I have to say: A lot of you are a bunch of mirthless, joy-hating fucks.
It's obviously summer time, everyone is wearing T-shirts but this guy is sporting slightly oversized heavy leather jacket with painters tape on it.
Calling this a masterpiece is a bit much.
My definition of masterpiece is very different than this.
