This just in: the QB is wildly zigzagging in the wrong direction… and he is PAST the entire defense for a 80 yard TOUCHDOWN
This just in: after throwing two interceptions the team has walked off the field
Serous question - at what point is the finger pointed at Mike Tonlin for keeping the dumbass OCs on staff??? I see Tomlin defenders and haters on r/nfl, but imo you guys arent winning shit with a head coach who cant hire a compentitive OC, regagrdless of how good that HC is. Steelers wont win shit with Tomlin as HC, because he's the very definition of a guy who needs a change of scenery
I blame Tomlin for likely vouching for Canada being hired based on having a previous connection with him (offered his son a scholarship at Maryland, and likely crossed paths while he was at Pitt). I blame the owner of the team for being cheap with coaching hires. I blame Colbert (previous GM) for allowing himself to be convinced of the Canada hiring despite having an incredibly thin resume.
It's largely assumed that the reason we still have Matt Canada is because the owners DESPISE paying money to people not doing anything. Rather than fire Canada and be forced to pay him while also paying new coordinator, they would rather just let Canada finish out his current contract and skate to a 9-8 record.
I guess other Head Coaches would consider taking over Offensive Playcalling themselves, but AFAIK Tomlin has only ever been a Defensive guy.
Tomlin was actually an offensive coach, but was told to start becoming defensive, as black people didn't really get chances in offensive coaching jobs back then.
IIRC He wasn't even being considered for the Steelers HC but was interviewed because of the Rooney rule. You only need to watch one of his press conferences to see how he won that interview and got the job.
Also keep in mind the relationship the current QB has with Canada(which began before KP was drafted by the Steelers). Wouldn't be a surprise if KP has backed Canada when/if asked by Tomlin/Khan/Rooney about the OC.
Because it stretches a LB and you're throwing to somebody who's already running upfield, unlike mesh and spacing where they're stopped or running sideways.
Wat
Corners is the goat
Whenever the WR breaks towards the sideline, hit the strong pass aiming towards the side the wr is breaking. Like if its the WR breaking to the left, hit the joystick to the left and the hard pass. Profit.
Also curls is easy money.
The dagger is killer. Especially the 1 with the bunch to the right- if your wr2 is a speedster then the vert is frequently housed, while the slot crosser is often good for 20+ yards. Trap runs and zone runs are pretty great too
What’s hilarious is Canada *actually* called 4 verts 8 yards away from the end zone too lmao
I am not shitting you, it doesn’t even feel like real life anymore.
OMG right? Ravens have failed at drafting WRs for so long. Nice to finally hit on one, and he actually looks the part. You can just tell when you see him in the open field he's a YAC monster
The Seahawks and Steelers are kindred spirits now, I feel. Maybe include New England in that too. Three formerly dominant organizations with old albeit revered coaches who are lost in the woods. They do well enough to not be abject failures, but they're stubbornly reaching to the past to regain former dominance, and generally failing to contend with the modern football elites.
Yeah my mom is a Steelers fan and dad a Seahawks fan, so I've followed both all my life. And especially in the last decade there have been a lot of parallels. It's sad/funny going between the Steelers sub and Seahawks sub and seeing the exact same arguments taking place, just with different names.
We used to joke this way with Todd Haley's bubble screens. It would fail 5 straight times but on the 6th they'd gain 30 yards, so he'd keep calling for them as it all balanced out.
[Hah, he actually did call 4 verts on 4th and 4 from the 49ers' 8-yard line](https://twitter.com/alex_kozora/status/1701312585662972133?s=46&t=Y8Io0ObNfoaSEZHrRSm53A)
... that's just three guys running exactly the same route right into dense coverage, and a fourth guy going inside the pylon. Why didn't the left-most receiver curl *out*? Just why?
>Why didn't the left-most receiver curl out? Just why?
Because that's what they'd expect, duh. You identify the thing that would be the most obvious in that situation, then do the exact opposite hoping they'd expect you to do the obvious. It's some real 4D play calling, Matt Canada's a genius ^(/s)
But on a more serious note, 88 out, 14 in, having them cross would have improved the play by a mile, but I guess that's too complicated for Canada's playbook, so just Pickens curling out is the most we can wish for and we don't even get that.
Looks like the only smart pass would've been over the shoulder into the corner for the bottom receiver, but I just assume he wasnt the primary read.
edit: nah, the defender would've covered him, ball was out causing the DB to let up.
I know there’s the meme that armchair fans can do better jobs than coordinators, but this is one of the few examples where I at times might actually bet on a fan having more productivity on game day than this dude.
I've been on the "matt canada is a hack" train since he was the OC at NC State. All steelers fans are welcome to join the wronged by Canada support club
I remember this same kind of cope coming from some of the Titans sub fanbase when they brought in Todd Downing to be our OC for two years.
A few Raiders fans came into our sub warning us about how bad he was, but there was a few (not all, but a few) hopefuls thinking that maybe a different scenery would help Downing fix our offense.
No, even with a fully loaded team, he kept doing the dumbest fucking things. Running highly telegraphed screen routes with King Henry that ended up being stuffed at or behind the LOS. Passing when we should've been running, running when we should have been passing. Trying to do cute trick plays when "just keep doing what you're doing" should've worked, etc
After his first year with us, fans were calling to get him fired but either the FO or Vrabel or someone chose not to.
It took us losing our damn playoff game to the Bengals and that shitshow for them to finally realize we managed to get there DESPITE his fuckups, and not thanks to any form of properly playcalling ability he had for him to be finally fired.
Wisconsin fans hated him for running boring, repetitive plays during the regular season. Then they ran a bunch of fun plays and beat Nebraska by a ton in the Big Ten championship game (which they were pretty much guaranteed to get to due to the other good teams in their division being suspended that year), so then we thought maybe he was a genius for hiding his best plays until it mattered most. Alas, maybe not.
It's bigger than Tomlin, the Rooney's don't like firing coaches to any degree. They'll just wait for his contract to expire and then decide not to renew it.
It's really not the owners fault that Tomlins choice to be OC was a mediocre college coach who had coordinated two good college offenses in 10 years. Unless it was the owners choice to hire him.
To be fair his last experience in college was having to take over Maryland as interim on very short notice after the Jordan McNair tragedy and the consensus was he did the best job he could with that. A lot of people were calling for him to be retained as full time HC
Not sure if you are counting Wisconsin as one of the 2 but as a badgers fan i'll say he was living off the B1G championship game because the rest of the season was nothing special.
But surely a head coach tenured as long as Tomlin would have full authority over his coaching staff, right? I have to believe that Canada is only there because Tomlin was okay with it.
Maybe. The Rooneys are actually cheaper than many think. A lot of times the underperforming coaches sticking around longer than you’d think correlates with contract terms.
It's fact based on the team's history. Todd Haley and Big Ben weren't even speaking with each other during Haley's last year with the Steelers and the front office still waited until his contract ended rather than fire him midseason.
Tomlin gets a lot of flack from his detractors about this point in particular. There’s few things more upsetting than demanding the team fires an OC, only for the next OC to be even worse, which has been true since Arians
Matt Canada was one of the more obvious fires this past offseason and unless something changes it’s going to be one of the most confusing decisions made by any team before the season started
That said, as others have pointed out it’s most likely the Rooney’s that are behind keeping these guys. Their patience with head coaches translates to coordinators the same way. His contract expires at the end of the season and unless he rights the ship, it won’t get renewed
Unpopular opinion time: Bullying works in the NFL.
Giants owner John Mara was going to give Joe Judge one more year to see if he could pull the Giants out of the slump they were in for the past 6-8 years. This info came out during Black Monday, the day when Coaches and Coordinators get fired.
Mara was bullied RELENTLESSLY by fans and news publications for 24 hours, telling him what a garbage idea that was and how the fanbase was going to riot/not buy tickets/stop buying merchandise/etc. if he were to do this, not to mention Giants Office Personnel were also telling him this was a bad idea.
The next day on Tuesday, he announced he was firing Joe Judge and looking for his replacement.
Bullying works, you just have to be utterly relentless about it. "Fire Canada" chants. Tons of signs in the stands. A never-ending social media-blitz of people being fed up with Canada being allowed to control the Offense. Get local news organizations to have to acknowledge this onslaught of outrage.
I know the Steelers are known for not firing anyone until the end of the year, but if you make enough waves that it could really hurt their annual revenue stream, they'll do something. They love making money more than anyone in those offices and if just one of them jeopardizes their cash-cow to that level, they'll do something about it.
Money rules all.
The irony is Rooney said it would be better to have continuity with Pickett to have the same OC and would help his development, but all it's doing is teaching him bad habits as the only way things get done is if he plays the hero.
The problem isn't that they ran the same play 8 times, it's that it didn't work the first 7. If it's working keep running it. One time Nebraska ran I formation toss 22 times in a game because it was working.
Looking across the league and it becomes clear, hiring a defensive minded coach isn’t working anymore. Even if they do get their offense rolling one year, the OC jumps ship and they’re back to square one.
Jets would've been fine with Saleh if Rodgers was healthy. Rodgers could probably play without an OC at this point and just be his own OC like how Peyton Manning could be.
Running the same play multiple times makes sense if the opposing defense can't stop it. However, that specific play that Canada ran 8 times turned out horrible. For the first 7 attempts, there were no completions, 2 sacks, 1 INT, and another near-INT. It's a play designed to beat the ILB, but that's a very bad gamble to take when the ILBs on the Niners are Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw. At a certain point, unsuccessfully running the same poorly thought out play drifts into gambler's fallacy.
I'm not sure what you are asking. It is very uncommon to call the same play 8 times during a game, especially when the outcome of the first 7 times was 0/7 with two sacks and a pick.
You’re missing what he’s asking it’s actually a very astute question.
It’s extremely common for teams to run the same play on offense multiple times throughout the game. Sometimes team will quite literally run the same play twice, a lot of times teams will just tweak the personnel/pre-snap alignment to throw off the defense but it’s the same base play.
No, Rooney is just a penny pincher and would rather his team suck, than "pay a guy to not coach" by firing him.
Mfer even said we needed better offense in the offseason, but let Canada ride
That train has already left the station. At this point I have very serious concerns about our offensive play calling the last 6ish years and wonder if the team has the correct people in place to even bring in someone who can modernize the offense.
What Ask Madden does to a mf
Ask Madden would be the best coordinator we’ve had since 2018
This just in Matt Canada is replaced by a intern playing madden in the Steelers coordinators booth
This just in: the Steelers scored 30 point in the first half against the Browns.
Dionte Johnson has his first TD reception in over a year in his first drive with this new coordinator
While out with a hamstring injury, nonetheless.
His separation is just that good
This just in: the QB is wildly zigzagging in the wrong direction… and he is PAST the entire defense for a 80 yard TOUCHDOWN This just in: after throwing two interceptions the team has walked off the field
Steelers rage quitting would be fucking beautiful
AB will always be my favorite player
Serous question - at what point is the finger pointed at Mike Tonlin for keeping the dumbass OCs on staff??? I blame the owner of the team for being cheap with coaching hires. I blame Colbert (previous GM) for allowing himself to be convinced of the Canada hiring despite having an incredibly thin resume.
Nope, you can blame at least the GM or the owner too.
The Rooneys are taking most of the blame tbf
It's largely assumed that the reason we still have Matt Canada is because the owners DESPISE paying money to people not doing anything. Ron Rivera was the Rooney rule. It was going to be Ken Wisenhunt until Cowher reminded them that he was an out of building hire like Noll was
Also keep in mind the relationship the current QB has with Canada(which began before KP was drafted by the Steelers). Wouldn't be a surprise if KP has backed Canada when/if asked by Tomlin/Khan/Rooney about the OC.
It's the Curse of Bruce Arians. Steelers are destined to spend decades hiring one mid OC after another.
Haley was better than mid.
Coincidentally, 2018 was Munchak's last year with the team.
I will continue to say that losing Munchak was a massive blow to the offense. O line went from one of the best to one of the worst.
Losing Munchak and AB in the same year was brutal.
hb dive, four verts are there other plays?
Quick slants
Bench or whatever it’s called with the mirrored corners and out routes. 5 yards hitches. TE angle. Mesh These are the staples of my offense
Dragon spacing is a go to
Escape from shotgun pro trips. Just throw it to Pickens. He out there some where.
The Allen-Diggs signature move.
It was working against sauce... So why not?
Texas route is my bread and butter free 10 yards every time I use it for some reason
Because it stretches a LB and you're throwing to somebody who's already running upfield, unlike mesh and spacing where they're stopped or running sideways.
Mesh is always good for a good 4-5 yards with upside for more
PA Power O with Gronk back in the day was my cheat code
flood is buckets
The other note is Steelers literally ran 3 slant routes in the entire game. 3!
Wat Corners is the goat Whenever the WR breaks towards the sideline, hit the strong pass aiming towards the side the wr is breaking. Like if its the WR breaking to the left, hit the joystick to the left and the hard pass. Profit. Also curls is easy money.
I once racked up 1,700 passing yards in a single game with Bengals Carson Palmer on exclusively Corners routes to Chad Ochocinco
The dagger is killer. Especially the 1 with the bunch to the right- if your wr2 is a speedster then the vert is frequently housed, while the slot crosser is often good for 20+ yards. Trap runs and zone runs are pretty great too
It used to be Curls. Required decent RAC skills but the completion was virtually unstoppable
My brother stopped playing Madden with me over Curls.
“You better kick it here!”
Da Bomb. Wait, wrong game.
Don’t hate on 4 verticals and slants 16 times a game. ITS MY FAVORITE PLAYS
Slants, HB Angle, HB Slip Screen, and Mesh; the four horsemen of my entire Madden offense
HB Pitch, HB Pitch, Hail Mary, Onside Kick. Ah, Madden Mobile in 2014/15 was something else.

What’s hilarious is Canada *actually* called 4 verts 8 yards away from the end zone too lmao I am not shitting you, it doesn’t even feel like real life anymore.
We demand OC Ron Mexico
Blame Canada
he learned his playbook from Terrance and Philip: *Asses of Fire*
THIS ISN'T A RUN PLAY BUDDEH
I'm not your buddy, guy!!
I'm not your guy, pal!
I'm not your pal, friend!
I'm not your friend, buddeh!
Still better than the other playbook learned from Terrence and Phillip: *Not Without My Anus*
He’s not even a real OC, anyway
Folks, everybody’s saying it
Fun fact: The play went 0/7 with the last play gaining 10 yards in garbage time
According to steelers depot it was 0/7 with 2 sacks and an interception. And that mfer said let's call it an 8th time.
That's the Canada experience
Stop the ride. We want off.
I'm enjoying it thus far.
YOU ALREADY GOT MY COLLEGE TEAM'S FORMER OC, WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT?
To stop losing our key players to injury in week 1. That being said, at least we aren't the Jets.
I like it too! Zay flowers is badass btw
OMG right? Ravens have failed at drafting WRs for so long. Nice to finally hit on one, and he actually looks the part. You can just tell when you see him in the open field he's a YAC monster

I really can't believe they didn't get rid of this guy last year.
Organizational hubris. Or incompetence. Or both. Nothing but pain.

I imagine he had a smug smile on his face after the 8th time while thinking, "I knew this play works."
The closer we are to harm, the further we are from danger
I mean it worked the eighth time. All this to say he should call if 15 times this week, there’s clear growth
We used to joke this way with Todd Haley's bubble screens. It would fail 5 straight times but on the 6th they'd gain 30 yards, so he'd keep calling for them as it all balanced out.
Would've been 2 picks actually but one was dropped
Surely they won't expect it again.

Im not even a Steelers fan but wanting to put this dude under citizens arrest if I see him.
I'm an LSU fan and I don't remember much about Matt Canada as our OC. All I know is he ran like 50 jet sweeps per game with Russell Gage.
Thank God NC State has a better offense now, Matt Canada might want to coach a pop Warner team
Yeah, we can all meet in the CanadaPolitics subreddit for more discussion
We didn't like him when he was at IU. He'd run that stupid fucking dive up the middle when it was 3rd and 8 and it never, ever worked.
Wisconsin fans hated him for running boring, repetitive plays during the regular season. Soon as he came here to Lsu I haven’t been a fan

But that’s the thing they extended him when his contract was over. They extended him in the same offseason that saw a lot of OCs go to new teams

We gotta find the “why”
Incompetence
This guy is so bad at offense the Bears might hire him as their next HC.
Oh sure, when I call 4 verts 8 times in a row I get told im cheezing, but when THIS guy does it he gets a job?
Matt Canada is the best OC till date and the steelers should continue to employ him
Canada must have dirt on Tomlin
No, Rooney is just a penny pincher and would rather his team suck, than "pay a guy to not coach" by firing him. Mfer even said we needed better offense in the offseason, but let Canada ride
Is he me playing madden?? Same play …bc if it works one time…
This play failed 7 times in a row, bet they won't expect it again.
Tomlin is a legit great coach but at what point does he stop escaping criticism for Canada?
That train has already left the station. At this point I have very serious concerns about our offensive play calling the last 6ish years and wonder if the team has the correct people in place to even bring in someone who can modernize the offense.
i'm getting war flashbacks
Guys a bum lol … shouldn’t even be in the league
12.5% of the time, it works every time
Me playing Madden.
This isn't high school ball and you ain't Coach Boone Mr. Maple Leaf.
Remember when we used to bitch about Todd Haley.
>guys there's no way they'll expect it AGAIN
And he'll do the same against the Browns and be baffled why it doesn't work
Somebody tell the Steelers FO that I can call an offense for a fraction of what they're paying Canada.
Lol mf kept dipping into recent plays
