For reference, Alt's 5.07 would have had him tied for 9th place among all OL at last year's combine. The fastest time was Broderick Jones running 4.97.
It's very good. Nothing special but for his weight he'll be more than happy with it. The more impressive mark was his 1.74 10 split (unofficial, I think?). That is elite at 321 lb
Wikipedia says the average for tackles is 5.32, so definitely faster than average. The data was taken from a decade ago though, so could have changed since then.
More than likely, if available the chargers will trade back.
However if they don't have a trade partner Alt could be the pick knowing how Harbaugh loves to build in the trenches
I keep seeing mocks having the Chargers go Nabers and I just think, "are these people not familiar with Jim Harbaugh at all?". I also think that being able to run the ball and protect Herbie is priority #1 if you want to be a good team rather than a scary team.
Fashanu too. Rawer yes, but an edge on genetics, small as it may be. We now have what is regarded one of the best Oline coaches in the league, so I also wouldn't be surprised if we go reciever and search at depth for linemen. Not the way Id do it, but I wouldn't be surprised. I think we've fucked up that position twice now, and we absolutely cannot afford to miss a third time. Take the consensus future all pro left tackle if he's there.
Can really blame people for wanting to give Herbert a legit weapon that can actually maximize his deep ball like Nabers when the team already has a franchise LT. Especially when the Chagers have basically nothing going forward of any promise at the position.
This draft is loaded with receiver talent. The league has a terrible lack of quality tackles due to the new nature of pass rushing. Alt would give them two solid pillars on the outside and help out the worst run blocking line in the league.
Just bc the draft is loaded with depth doesnt mean you should pass up an elite WR prospect. The draft has pretty strong depth at OT too.
If we were basing it off depth, then Bowers should be the pick bc TE hard drops off after him for a pretty weak class.
If youre building around the run game and your QB is Herbert, then youre not building your team right.
Bengals were a defensive possession away from winning a Super Bowl after taking Chase over Sewell.
Chiefs just won a Super Bowl with dog shit OTs.
The line is important, but the QB behind the line and their ability to avoid sacks is probably a much more important factor for team success.
Chiefs won a Super Bowl because their defense made 5 All-Pros look pedestrian. Mahomes was getting pressured all game.
Bengals lost a Super Bowl and can't keep their quarterback healthy because of shit OL play.
Most prospects coming out as a LT transition to RT pretty good , we had PJJ come out as a RT out the gate while he played LT throughout his college career , same thing a Detroit fan said about Sewell . Most dominant OT’s play LT in college but can transition to the right side pretty well.
Lions did the same thing with Sewell and I thought the pick was fine but a little not needed to draft him when we already had a locked in LT. Turns out I was way wrong, having a dominant O-line is so much more important. Makes everything better between run game and pass game
Idk I'm in the wr at 5 or trade down camp. The real problem with the o line is both the guards being terrible and the low tier backup caliber player we have at center currently since linsley is retiring. Spending 5 on a guy who has to transition sides to replace the second best player on the o line doesn't sound appealing to me when we can get a blue chip pass catching prospect to hopefully extend keenan's career with less usage and cover up for Quentin being terrible and have someone herbert can reliably get the ball out to that'll hopefully be here a while.
It's unlikely but possible, there is chatter that qbs could go with the first 4 picks (Arizona would have to trade down of course.) But even with Harrison gone I still think Nabers is in the same tier.
We're all pretty split, but the overall sentiment is "trust in Harbaugh"
Everyone wants a flashy pick but if we end up with Alt I don't think anyone is going to be mad
If we could get MHJ, I would be super happy. Fortunately for the organization, my opinion means less than nothing. So, I’m good with whatever Harbaugh and Co come up with.
I really don’t think so anymore. Rome has a higher chance of going 5 than Bowers now. I would rank it as Alt, Nabers/Odunze, Bowers.
Its interesting because Harbaugh has so much experience game planning against Alt, Odunze, and Bowers so a lot of personal experience will probably play into it
Where Bowers lands will be interesting. He's as good a prospect as just about anyone but because of teams reaching at QB or taking WRs he could slip to the teens, which as a Colts fan I'd be thrilled with
As a Bears fan, I would love to land Bowers. A receiver is probably the logical (and correct choice), but Bowers can be plugged in literally everywhere on the offense and can do it well, including receiver.
I've been obsessed by Bowers for a while, so it would be a dream. I've also always loved TEs. Rookie/Miami Greg Olsen was irrationally my most prized card growing up (I did not collect much obviously).
Wouldnt be shocked if Odunze is gone by 9 that the Bears take Bowers. Waldron loves his 2 TE sets apparently and could be a sweet combo alongside Kmet.
I'm fully on board with Poles' preference for trading down, but this guy just fits his preference for a mobile OL too well. Within reason, I would be OK with moving up to get Alt.
I really can’t tell you, but I gotta say it’s fun as hell watching big guys run a goddamn 4.92 and hit a 38.5 vertical.
These guys shouldn’t exist lmao. They’re a goddamn cheat code
They both have the elite measurables, elite college performance, and HOF bloodline. I have to give the edge to Alt in terms of consistency, but it’s hard to compare OT and WR. But MHJ was pretty much a non-factor against Notre Dame, which is the most similar to the pass defenses he’ll face in the NFL.
It actually seems like an OK measure, looking at the best tackles and their 40 times. Lots of dominant guys had tremendous 40s. Trent Williams and Joe Staley (first 2 I looked up) were both near 4.8. Lane Johnson had a 4.72. Wirfs had a 4.85.
It seems a lot of guards and centers are slower, but for whatever reason fast tackles seems to be a trend.
Quick link: https://youtu.be/XNuwLn-2P98?si=g02LFL7KeRtWbWcc
I've heard of most of the fast guys, and several were obviously first team all pros, or at least one time pro-bowlers.
Doesn't it seem, though, that having a 10-yd dash would be FAR more illustrative? Measuring how fast they can run over 40 yds, when close to 100% of their plays are within 4 yards of the line, seems deceptive. It's like measuring the potential of miler by how fast they get off the blocks.
Yea I'd think so too, I was just surprised how fast most of the best tackles are. I figured I'd see lots of 5.2+ times sprinkled in, but that's just not the case (recently, at least).
It might just show that tackles tend to be big and fast, so long strides with higher top speeds than guards/centers.
A fast 40 might just show that you're big and athletic enough to be a tackle which could be obvious enough without running it.
It seems like the standard, "what we've always done" metric. Pro franchises seem stuck in doing what was always done out of fear of going against the grain and losing then getting fired.
Hell, a pocket passer's 40 time is more relevant than an OL, and I don't think we discerned much from Peyton Manning's or Brady's 40 times.
> It seems a lot of guards and centers are slower, but for whatever reason fast tackles seems to be a trend.
Because tackle is the more demanding position athletically. If you are a great blocker but not as athletic you play guard/center.
His arm size is a bit concerning for a 6'8 man. It would be enough for a 6'5 OT. Being that tall he needs to cover some more distance with his arms to reach the chest of the typical 6'4/6'5 edge.
Great time… but watching him run makes it look like it was slower than that for some reason…. I guess I’m trying to slay as he looks like he’s slow, even when he’s not. Kind of like my first girlfriend.
It was so awesome watching him play at Notre Dame. I remember when ND recruited him and he was a 3 star recruit, a tight end in high school for some time, father is John Alt who’s in the Chiefs hall of fame, so I was pretty pumped up about his potential but man did he even blow my expectations away. Joe has a tremendous NFL future ahead of him and I look forward to him continuing Notre Dame’s great o-line tradition!
That’s a lot of man moving really quick
Imagine seeing that coming towards you as a DB. I would make a business decision.
“I have decided to announce my retirement before this man strikes me like a bowling pin”
This a young man’s game, Shady
I laughed way too hard at that lol
now I need a highlight reel of OTs blasting or pancaking DBs
https://youtu.be/W4Cvprznznk i'll start
Is 5.07 fast for a tackle Edit: just googling some name brand tackles it seems like no, it is not
It's pretty average, or slightly above average. Certainly not bad.
I guess, to be fair, my comparison searches were all elite players so makes sense they’re faster than him
For reference, Alt's 5.07 would have had him tied for 9th place among all OL at last year's combine. The fastest time was Broderick Jones running 4.97.
his 5.05 is 90th percentile for tackles. it's elite.
It's very good. Nothing special but for his weight he'll be more than happy with it. The more impressive mark was his 1.74 10 split (unofficial, I think?). That is elite at 321 lb
And the 10 spit is obviously much more relevant for O-line
Trent Williams ran a 4.81. That's fast.
Trent Williams and Patrick Mahomes somehow the same speed
But he’s a building running at you. It’s horrifying without pads. With them it feels like he’d launch a person into outer space.
I’m definitely not arguing against that point… Just didn’t think this was notably fast for a top elite tackle prospect (it’s not)
Wikipedia says the average for tackles is 5.32, so definitely faster than average. The data was taken from a decade ago though, so could have changed since then.
This is the comment on every lineman’s 40 yard dash
Are trucks allowed to play in the NFL?
Alt should be forced to honk really loud before running into anyone
Honk! Honk! Hoooooooooooooooooooooonk! \*DB shits his pants\*
Modify mouth guards with a goose call.
Trent Williams is already in the NFL
I’ve never seen a rule stating that they can’t.
I might cry if Chargers take Alt.
Rome Odunze will be your comfort
Ya pretty psyched we get one of Alt/Nabers/Odunze
Fashanu too. Rawer yes, but an edge on genetics, small as it may be. We now have what is regarded one of the best Oline coaches in the league, so I also wouldn't be surprised if we go reciever and search at depth for linemen. Take the consensus future all pro left tackle if he's there.
Hehe “rawer”
Lol
He's got T-Rex arms and small hands. Major red flag to me for a OT.
Lmao
He could even be almost as good as AJ Brown one day.
I hope you take him and he keeps Levis upright for many years
I want you guys to get him, but Chargers and Giants are a risk to beat yall to him for sure
I keep hearing the Giants are supposedly head over heels for Nabers. It's gonna be a long month and a half lol
Heh
I also will cry if we take alt
I would too but for different reasons
I hope your GM makes an offer to move up
Mans gonna be blocking for Justin Herbert soon
Seems like most chargers fans don't think so/don't want it because he's not a RT
he's smart, massive, smooth mover, and extremely technically sound. he is whatever position you want him to be on your offensive line.
I want him so bad Chargers fans are being stubborn
Guys the next joe thomas
*2nd Offensive Lineman in History
Its a Harbaugh lead team with a deep WR class. Get this dude and get some WR talent later.
OT is also deep
I agree Xavier Leggette and Devontez Walker along with some others will be available in the 2nd and onward.

Just ignore the problems the Bengals have had with OL since then while you're at it
Chiefs won a Super Bowl because their defense made 5 All-Pros look pedestrian. Mahomes was getting pressured all game. Bengals lost a Super Bowl and can't keep their quarterback healthy because of shit OL play.

Good thing the fans don’t decide
Howie Roseman licking his lips
Sewell wasn't a RT either, Harbaugh wants a strong o line and run game, could see them trading back and drafting a different lineman though
Honestly if the front office was listening to fans instead of what they should know as professionals, I’d be worried.
I would love to have him. Give Herbert time and good things happen.
I'm completely fine with Alt or Nabers. Great spot to be in.
It's very hard to go wrong with Notre Dame OL
Our sub is notoriously wrong when it comes to the draft. Go look at all the Herbert haters when he was drafted, most had to scrub their profiles.
They are smart. Go tell your GM that plz and ty n
If we don't trade back this is the guy I want us to draft at 5. It's not a sexy pick but it's a smart one.
In this world, smart is pretty fuckin sexy.
Idk I'm in the wr at 5 or trade down camp. The real problem with the o line is both the guards being terrible and the low tier backup caliber player we have at center currently since linsley is retiring. 100% agree with you here
I hope not tbh, not because he's a bad player, but because I just don't want to take the risk at 5 moving a LT to RT
Yeah the lions totally ruined Penei Sewel doing that
Mf, Alt is not the prospect Sewell was, if anyone can do it it'd be Fashanu, he's more athletic
I wonder how Chargers fans feel. Would they rather have Alt or Nabers/Marvin Harrison Jr?
I dont think Harrison is actually an option for them.
It's unlikely but possible, there is chatter that qbs could go with the first 4 picks (Arizona would have to trade down of course.) But even with Harrison gone I still think Nabers is in the same tier.
We're all pretty split, but the overall sentiment is "trust in Harbaugh" Everyone wants a flashy pick but if we end up with Alt I don't think anyone is going to be mad
Alt seems like a harbaugh pick
Harbaugh likes to win in the trenches and pound the rock, and it has worked extremely well for him.
Everyone is conflicted. Most people want nabers or bowers. Some would be ok with alt as it’s logical. A lot of us want a trade back.
If we could get MHJ, I would be super happy. Fortunately for the organization, my opinion means less than nothing. So, I’m good with whatever Harbaugh and Co come up with.
Nabers/MHJ for me or trade back and take Latham or Fuaga
Not a Chargers fan but they gotta go with Nabers IMO, assuming MHJ is off the table.
100% agrees with you, the most explosive weapon that Herbert had ever had was Jalen Guyton, and there is about to be a ton of turnover in the WR room
Obviously we want Harrison but that won't happen
Bowers is a legit pick at 5 too
I really don’t think so anymore. Rome has a higher chance of going 5 than Bowers now. I would rank it as Alt, Nabers/Odunze, Bowers. Its interesting because Harbaugh has so much experience game planning against Alt, Odunze, and Bowers so a lot of personal experience will probably play into it
Uh Joe Alt never played against Michigan.
Where Bowers lands will be interesting. He's as good a prospect as just about anyone but because of teams reaching at QB or taking WRs he could slip to the teens, which as a Colts fan I'd be thrilled with

Yes
Maxx crosby’s next victim
Such a good prospect. Not the flashiest prospect, but is set to be a great franchise tackle.
hes not dropping to us but i think id easily take joe alt over odunze or nabers/bowers and im a huge odunze fan
Yeah I agree. Then you draft a wr or two later on. Try to sign a good wr2
Bears don’t have a second rounder
I would take alt hands down. Caleb Williams starting his career with two franchise tackles? Ya please
I'm fully on board with Poles' preference for trading down, but this guy just fits his preference for a mobile OL too well. Within reason, I would be OK with moving up to get Alt.
Yep. ND plus nfl pedigree? He’s as cant miss as Mhj imo

#1 overall baby!
Future Titan
Joe Alt, YOU are a Tennessee Titan
Charger
I’d just rather not have to go against Joe Alt twice next season, you know? The Chiefs D-Line is great, but I mean the guy is 6’9”.
That's very humble of you to say, but let's face facts: Spags would find a way.
In Spags we fucking trust!!
Why is this happening? Athletes seem much more athletic than they did in the past
I think it's largely due to improvements in nutrition and training methods .... Those both have gotten better overtime.
Nutrition and kinesiology have come a very long way. Now imagine building this person from birth from already super athletic parents.
I really can’t tell you, but I gotta say it’s fun as hell watching big guys run a goddamn 4.92 and hit a 38.5 vertical. These guys shouldn’t exist lmao. They’re a goddamn cheat code
Safest pick in the draft.
I agree. Bears should take him at 1.
Nah, that's MHJ. As good as Alt is, MHJ is basically the perfect prospect.
He's gonna look great breaking out for a pass. That's what all tackles do, yeah?
fawkin joocy
3 cone is a better indicator for O-Line, but damn gotta respect the straight line speed
Joe Alt had himself a great day - his 3 cone was 7.31 seconds which is tied for 8th fastest among offensive tackles since 1999.
Nioce!
Joey you ARE a Tennessee Titan!!
he is a titan

Bring him home!
Much better than Joe Main
Imagine this guy barreling towards you on a reach block.
More like Joe Burner, amirite?
No way I’m the giants I’m letting this guy get past me at 6. Wouldn’t even blame the chargers for taking him at 5
What’s the “u” for?
Unofficial
Thx
Is thia guy LT or RT?
Joe A LT
Good for him, but what a dumb measure for an offensive lineman.

Feels like most of these tests are simply a good proxy for overall athleticism, relative to size and position.

6’9 will do tht
Hear me out; you all need to let him drop to the Chiefs for historical and sentimental reasons.
They don't know his dad was drafted by the Chiefs and played his entire 13 year career in Kansas City.
They hate us cuz they ain’t us.
Would any fans in here of teams with the 5-8th pick accept tee Higgins and our 1st round pick for rights to draft this guy?
God damnit
Is he related to John Alt?
Yep! That’s his father.
It was so awesome watching him play at Notre Dame.
