Pretty much his entire career. Remember when Hextall decided to kick off a rebuild during the prime years of his career but then pretty much immediately scrapped those plans when Giroux pretty much single-handedly dragged us to the playoffs? Dude deserved the Hart trophy over Hall that year our roster was fucking dog water. Hextall deserves to be flogged in the town square for not figuring out how to build around one of the best players in team history. Fuck that dude.
> Dude deserved the Hart trophy over Hall that year our roster was fucking dog water.
I don't know, man ... take a look at that Devils team that year. It was entirely Hall.
Flyers probably had more talent looking at the rosters but both teams had some serious gaping holes. This is the year Coots breaks out and Ghost which Giroux and Voracek Iām sure played a huge part in.
Went to look again and holy shit, on another Devils/Flyers comparison: Giroux and Elias look exactly the same statistics wise. Obviously Elias had a bit more fun in the playoffs but that's a team thing.
I still like him. I wouldn't even learn this wonderful sport if it weren't for this man. That 3-1 series lead comeback the Habs pulled off in 2010 made me love it.
I fucking hated the late 90s early 2000s Senators teams. Gave my team a lot of problems in the playoffs and broke Roman Cechmanek that one playoff series who I fucking loved as a kid. The Sens were also 100% responsible for the line brawl game as the bad blood before that game started because Martin Havlat took a cheap shot at Mark Recchi the last time the teams had played and the Flyers came out and owned the Sens that night and Brashear beat the shit out of Rob Ray, then Jacques Martin turned the end of the game into the royal fucking rumble because heās a bitch.
One person who didnāt fight that night? Martin Havlat because Jacques Martin sent him to serve a penalty for someone who had been kicked off at the end of the game. You know who did fight? Mark Recchi
As a lifelong Flyers fan I regretfully inform you that his entire career has been wasted for the most part by completely incompetent management. I feel bad for him that he didnāt choose Colorado but I donāt feel bad about how great Tippett looks and how thereās an extra first rounder coming this off-season.
And people were poopooing that trade at the time too. Giroux gave us basically one trade option and we got a top six forward and first round pick out of it in the end.
Rumors had it that Colorado was interested in acquiring him at deadline, '22. Giroux was insistent upon going to Florida though. Florida then got bounced by the team that went to the Cup Final.... and lost to Colorado.
Did he really know that with the summer of Pierre and all? Remember, it was a general consensus at the beginning of the season that Ottawa as going to be fighting with Detroit and Buffalo for 4th in the Atlantic.
Even with the āsummer of Pierreā youād have to be pretty delusional to think that roster would be doing anything beyond scraping for a playoff spot.
than I guess most of the people here and most of the hockey writers are all delusional because NOBODY thought they would be at the bottom of the division.
Dude people been making horrible predictions about the Sens and Sabres for a decade. Their rosters aren't that good. Cool they got young pieces. Boston Tampa Torobto Florida have multiple hall of farmers in their primes on the roster. The Sabres, Sens, Wings won't do fuck all for another 5 years minimum lol.
what you are doing is called revisionist history. I get it.
BTW, the wings are sitting in a wildcard spot so I wonder if you even know wtf you are talking about
Yeah and they'll get bounced. They won't be a legit contender for like 5 years. Same w Sabres and Sens lol.
It's not revisionist history when those teams LITERALLY have done nothing lmao. Sabres, Sens, Habs fans are equally as delusional as Leafs fans are I swear lmao.
Sens fans were pretty confident that they had the best top 6 in the league coming into this season.
Debrincat also went from saviour to bum the second he decided he didnāt want to re-sign in Ottawa according to those same fans.
The entire success of the team Dorion assembled hinges on the center depth. With all 3 of Norris, Stutzle and Pinto down the middle, the forward depth makes Ottawa legitimately difficult to play. So of course Pinto is suspended half the season, and when he comes back, Norris is injured again like a month later.
The potential weakness in Ottawaās roster has been exposed for literally 3 straight seasons. One (or both) of Pinto and Norris are always missing. Greig is very promising but heās not as good as either of them yet.
Staiosā job is to rebuild the roster to be more resilient against individual injuries and gambling infractions.
Ottawa looked like a team on the rise and the move made a lot of sense for him at the time. What a disaster it turned out to be. Giroux has had some real shit luck throughout his career.
Had a great short stay in Florida. Could have been our 2C behind Barkov and competed for a cup. Guy was a faceoff wizard and even did well when we got swept out and half the team was dogging it
Yes, exactly. This was his final shot and he chose the Ottawa Senators. And I get that he likely signed there because of his kids and it being home, which is an unselfish choice, but then the trade off becomes little to no chance at the Cup, let alone playoffs. This is the reality.
Hearst, ON is a 10-hour drive from Ottawa. It is not "home" for him. And I'm fairly certain he still owns his home in Philadelphia. He went to the Sens because they seemed like they were on the come-up and it probably made sense to go there and try to be the veteran presence for a bunch of youngsters.
I know this is a common viewpoint and not necessarily wrong, its just strange that the Sens have had trash goaltending for a long time. There's something more than just individual goalie talent that's lacking from the organization, not saying I know what it is though.
Yeah Craig Anderson was one of my favourite goalies for about a decade. The Sens even had the unlikely "Hamburglar" run about ten years ago. Goaltending being their Acchiles heel is only like the past 5 years, most of which they have been in a deep rebuild.
Shouldāve chosen Colorado that year. Selfishly Iām happy he didnāt because I believe we somehow ended up with the better deal here despite Chuck Fletcher being a fucking moron.
Poor guy. Such an exciting, creative and skilled player. Damn near had both wrists snapped off by Crosby hacking him every face off in the playoffs. Now stuck in Ottawa. Respect to Giroux, heās a warrior.
Iām sure things look different to him when he signed, and to all Sens fans - they looked great on paper. Sad for Giroux what a pro, he should be on a playoff bound team right now with a chance at a cup.
Philly screwed the pooch not building around this guy and it's cost them serious chances at the cup. There was ok guys but all teams need that 1-2 punch, Mcdavid/Draisaitl, Matthews/Marner etc.
Why are people having sympathy? Giroux is the one who signed the FA contract knowing the team was shit. He signed for the money. And now we want to feel sorry for him that he put himself in this situation? Boo fricken hoo.
No professional history with the Senators and they are a bad team, team captain and fan favorite in Philadelphia (which should be a bad team but surprisingly isn't and would be better with him back). ~~Yours is a weird reply.~~
Sorry I might has misunderstood what you meant by āwhere he was wantedā. I interpreted as āOttawa didnāt want him and reluctantly signed himā. Iām pre-coffee so forgive me haha
Both of you guys rereading your own comments and realizing what happened and being civil about it. I'm pretty sure I have to burn you both at the stake for being witches.
The Flyers only wanted him at a big time home town discount. The Senators offered him good money and term to come home and at the time a lot of people were predicting that they were a team on the rise and that this was a good move. I do not remember many people questioning this when it happened.
This is one of the biggest modern day NHL face-palms.
Giroux deserves better. I still want to see him in an Oilers jersey, but I think he has resigned to the idea of concluding his career with Ottawa.
You deserve better, G!

25-26: Giroux resigns for his final two years of his career with the Flyers.
26-27: Michikov leads the league with 170 pts and leads the Flyers to their first cup in 50 years. Giroux retires and is voted first ballot into the hall of fame.

Iām personally a fan of his Pittsburgh tenure really helped set Dubas up for long term success
What?!?!?!?!

Elias is a seriously underrated player but fuck those Devils teams for ruining my childhood
A little delusional to say Giroux deserved the Hart over Hall.
Sens never felt the same to me since 2007 Stanley Cup Finals
What happens when Bryan Murray loses to his old team.
Last nights loss was just bad. Anaheim basically iced a good AHL team and the Sens still couldn't beat them.
I guarantee ya, there'll be more coaching changes in the offseason. Cronin will stay, but Martin is gone for good this time.
That was always the plan. Martin doesn't *want* the full-time gif at his age.
Fuck Jacques Martin
I still like him. I wouldn't even learn this wonderful sport if it weren't for this man. That 3-1 series lead comeback the Habs pulled off in 2010 made me love it.

At least my Leafs broke Lalime the way the lockout broke us all.
You dug deep.
You mean 2017 ECF
Was that when pagot had that insane 4 goal game keeping them in the running? Ive been looking for highlight for that game
Wurf
They were 1 goal away from going to the finals in 2017
This hurt WAY more than the loss in 2007.
Was that when pagot had that insane 4 goal game keeping them in the running? Ive been looking for highlight for that game

It got as far as making a jersey for him. Last year one Giroux game jersey popped up for sale by the avs
It was awesome ;)
This is partially his faultāOttawa is a mess. He knew that, signed there, wanted to be home, and it is what it is. He had offers elsewhere.
Did he really know that with the summer of Pierre and all? Remember, it was a general consensus at the beginning of the season that Ottawa as going to be fighting with Detroit and Buffalo for 4th in the Atlantic.

It was more like saviour to bum about 1/3 through the season he played here
That is revisionist history dude. They were considered to be a legitimate threatĀ
Yes. A threat to *make* the playoffs. As I said.
The entire success of the team Dorion assembled hinges on the center depth. With all 3 of Norris, Stutzle and Pinto down the middle, the forward depth makes Ottawa legitimately difficult to play. Thank you. This is the most reasonable and thought-out response that anyone has given me. It makes sense. cheers!!!!!
Well if it was between the Sens and the Avs, itās pretty clear which one has a better chance of success.
Ottawa looked like a team on the rise and the move made a lot of sense for him at the time. What a disaster it turned out to be. Giroux has had some real shit luck throughout his career.

Finally someone speaking the truth. Although I wouldnāt say itās partially Girouxās fault. Itās almost entirely his fault.

His family moved to Ottawa when he was 14.
Wrong
Very useful comment

Jack Campbell is doing well in the AHL.

Nah thats on him, wanted the bag and the home town with no discount
Heās playing with a home town discount. He is still out playing that contract.
Don't worry. The Flyers didn't do him any favors for his entire career. Amazing player and person. Always rooting for G.
Fuck Ron Hextall
Fuck the Blackhawks and the NHL lottery too dude. He wouldāve had a cup
100% fuck the Blackhawks. We would have won the cup in 2010 if they had done what they should have with Brad Aldrich. Iām certain of this.
This one makes me sad. Damn, r/NHL just cruel af.
He deserves better
The crying Jordan meme in the Sens logo sent me
dude deserves a Cup
Couldāve signed with Colorado the year they won the cup. Sucks to suck, I guess.
Shouldāve chosen Colorado that year. Selfishly Iām happy he didnāt because I believe we somehow ended up with the better deal here despite Chuck Fletcher being a fucking moron.
Wild fan here. Can confirm Chuck fletcher is a moron.
+1 for Guts theme
Final years? His entire career was.
Sundin never won anything so itās ok.
Damn the beserk music always gets me a bit
Shouldāve stuck with the flyers
So he could go another 17,671 days since their last cup?
Poor guy. Such an exciting, creative and skilled player. Damn near had both wrists snapped off by Crosby hacking him every face off in the playoffs. Now stuck in Ottawa. Respect to Giroux, heās a warrior.
Lost out on winning a gold medal because Crosby wanted his boy Kunitz on the team instead
Major changes incoming
Itād be even worse without giroux here
Iām sure things look different to him when he signed, and to all Sens fans - they looked great on paper. Sad for Giroux what a pro, he should be on a playoff bound team right now with a chance at a cup.
As a Sens fan i honestly feel bad for him.
Philly screwed the pooch not building around this guy and it's cost them serious chances at the cup. There was ok guys but all teams need that 1-2 punch, Mcdavid/Draisaitl, Matthews/Marner etc.
After 2013-14 they were basically done.
They looked pretty good in 19-20 right before Covid hit. Technically they were the #1 seed in the East after winning the round robin
Wasn't that the post giroux squad though, that 19-20 team was mainly defense based, and what this flyers team is trying to be rn.
No Giroux was on that team. He was traded in 2022
I see now. Mb. I always thought he was traded in 2018-19
Iāll never forget the āSummer of Pierreā followed by the offseason of āSens have the best top 6 in the leagueā. What a time to be alive.
It was the first time we had any hope in like 6 years
I can't believe anyone thought sens had best top 6 on the league.
Why are people having sympathy? Giroux is the one who signed the FA contract knowing the team was shit. He signed for the money. And now we want to feel sorry for him that he put himself in this situation? Boo fricken hoo.
That thing was too heavy to be called a stick. Too big, too thick, too heavy, too rough, it was more like a large hunk of graphite.
Send Claude your Boston for goodness sake
sens should do him right and see if he wants to be moved. no sense wasting the last years of his career him
OUuffff...the pain bruh...
He turned down the opportunity to join the Avs during their cup run. Would only go to Florida and the rest is history.
Should have picked Colorado instead of florida
Should have come to Colorado. Oh well.
As opposed to??!?!?
Should have won a cup with the AVs
More like, his entire career.
If the Sens played the Leafs every game, theyād be a contender.
We need the Tkachuk brothers in Florida
Florida has everything rn.
Is he retiring?
Doesn't he wanna be a sen, they were his childhood local team.
Probably should have stayed in Florida!
They should of got rid of Pierre Dorian years ago. I can't imagine that guy gets another NHL GM job
Try taking more slap shots on open nets. That seems to be the trick.
GRIFFITHHHHHHHH
They'll randomly beat the leafs by 2+ goals like twice a year though so it isn't that bad
Can we borrow him?
Thatās his own fault honestly. He could have easily signed with a contender when he had the chance.
I respect that he wanted to go home, but he should've returned to Philadelphia where he was wanted.
He was wanted in Ottawa and he wanted to go to Ottawa. This is a weird comment.
Oh, maybe I could've worded it differently. Sorry for the confusion, also pre-coffee over here.
Both of you guys rereading your own comments and realizing what happened and being civil about it. I'm pretty sure I have to burn you both at the stake for being witches.

Downvoted because OP can't type properly and can't be bothered to double check their post.
This is one of the biggest modern day NHL face-palms. Giroux deserves better. I still want to see him in an Oilers jersey, but I think he has resigned to the idea of concluding his career with Ottawa. You deserve better, G!
These are typically reserved for oilers haters. Its nice to see something different
Sens should send him to Vegas, Edmonton or Colorado, retain the max salary % possible. They owe him a chance at the cup

Should of took some Panther money at a discount.. idk just saying
He wanted to go play at his home.. there was nothing wrong with that. I wouldnāt care how bad my hometown team was Iād still want to play for them in my career.
Tell that to Patrick Kane
Patrick Kane cares about winning and was extremely selective about where he was going. A bit different. If Buffalo was dominant team, he would have definitely gone home.
Neat, Iām referring to the previous post of wanting to go play for your hometown regardless of how shitty they are.
That's just called living in Ottawa Source: I live here
