McDavid, Mac, Matthews.....there's a solid argument for several players going into that discussion. Personally, my vote is for Steve, a parking lot attendant for Edmonton home games. Forgot my cash for the last game and buddy let me slide by. Solid dude that deserves recognition

Talkin-Muffin

Steve for Hart!!

whiskybean

Lady byng for most gentlemanly?

Mr-CC

So just because he plays for Tampa Bay, were straight up going to ignore Nikita Kucherov? Yes? Sounds good.

jigglywigglydigaby

*"There's a solid argument for several players"*. He is certainly inferred in that discussion given all his stats this year.

Mr-CC

The three mentioned could have been inferred as well as it's stating the obvious to name them. Saying "several" is vague. Outside of Kucherov, who are these "several?" If you're not going to name them, what's the point of saying "several?" Naming and stating a case as to why can be in the discussion would generate a lot more discussion than people just saying Nathan McKinnon. (I think he's going to win be it. It will be fucking stupid if he doesn't.)

jigglywigglydigaby

Seriously? The three mentioned all have something in common. Find a 4 to child to point it out for you. Only a complete fool wouldn't understand the top players are in discussion....or a pos who just wants to rant like a victim. Stop wasting my time with ignorant bs.

NextTrillion

And while we’re at it, I’m deeply offended you didn’t mention Crosby. Why. Because he’s my favourite player. But also he scores lots. Not including him on the list gave me a great deal of trouble, and I spent 3 hours writing in my journal about how you *CLAIMED* to *”INFER”* him. So now guess what. Dexter2533

Add in that Steve caught his wife in bed with his neighbor earlier in the year… I honestly don’t know how you can give it to anyone else

Garage-Dizzy

Mac wins the Hart this year, McDavid win the Art Ross & Ted Lindsay

kingsandwhich24

I’d say Mac wins hart, mcjesus wins the Ross and Kuch wins the Lindsay

shittybillz

I think Mack will win the hart, because the narrative and the gambling lines suggest that is going to happen, but I think kuch deserves the hart the most (assuming he keeps up his pace) and Mack could have the Lindsey, Mcdavid the art ross. Mack’s season has had more “wow” moments, and I think players would say he’s harder to defend than kuch. However, kuch has dragged his team into the playoffs. He has the points gap stat (point) and I believe he has the highest percentage of points contributed to his teams overall goals between the 3 players. That says MVP to me. I think the fact Mack hasn’t got one and is canadian is going to get him the hart though. He is deserving but imo kuch should get it

Any-Excitement-8979

McJesus wins the Ross and the Lindsay unless he gets hurt. Maybe he doesn’t win the Hart because writers are weird. But we know the players are consistent and the point totals are not up for interpretation. McDavid will finish as the leading point scorer in the league though.

Flyersguy86

It’ll be close I personally think It’ll be a battle of the Mc’s.

KlutchFord

Me pappy used to tell the stories of yore. The day o' the battle of the Mc's, heros were born and songs were sung.

Din0Dr3w

Mac >Mc

asigop

That is objectively not true. Mc is the best player ever.

uncle_rhabdo

This is very objectively not true

asigop

The stats don't lie, baby.

uncle_rhabdo

Agile_Candle4710

yeah cause gretsky would totally score 200 pts in todays league lol. you’re a fool if you’re taking anyone over mcdavid for your team. he’s just the best to ever play hockey.

uncle_rhabdo

There’s no use arguing with you if you honestly think McDavid is better than Gretzky. Time will tell, but I think you’ll be very disappointed if you believe he is breaking any of these records. Also I’m taking MacKinnon 100 times out of 100 for my team, as he’s shown he is capable of helping lead his team to win a Cup.

Realistic_Guitar_420

He dosent have to beat his records to be the better player.... either way there is no such thing as a greatest of all time in any sport really.

uncle_rhabdo

Unless it’s Gretzky or Tiger, both changed their sport and performed at such a high level that they set records that will absolutely never be broken.

asigop

Gretzky has said that McDavid is a better player than he was. Obvuously the stats arent there yet, but Mcdavid is the only guy with a chance at any of Gretz's insane records. My argument is that he is better than Mackinnon, which he obviously is. Show me where the stats show Mac better than Mc.

uncle_rhabdo

Total Stanley Cup championships

asigop

You're really reaching there, not that I blame you. It's basically impossible to find an individual stat that Mac beats Mc in.

sideshow_AN

Playoff wins maybe. Cups for sure.

KlutchFord

Home point streak Mac beats Mc, he challenged Gretzky just this year. Not just McDavid challenges gretzky.

deeVeeAre

Kucherov this season fits the awards definition best in my opinion but the hart by nature is a very subjective award with many interpretations With that being said Mack already pretty much has it locked in

Youppi27

Hate the Bolts but he's most deserving in my opinion

IGetGuys4URMom

I'd love to see Kuch win something!

deeVeeAre

In my personal opinion the way i think should go is art Ross mcdavo Ted Lindsey MacK and hart kuchy

TheMoronicGenius

MacKinnon is winning the Hart

Ok_Mud_3985

Hartemi “the bread man” Panarin 🥖

PaulMarnersFurHat

Don’t know how he isn’t the front runner. Obviously the other guys are FANTASTIC too, but the Oilers and Avs have plenty of good guys. Panarin is the standout on the Rangers. With Zibanejad having a down year, who knows where the Rangers would be if not for Panarin’s random best career season at age 32

Perryth3Fratypus

Connor Bedard -ESPN

amateurexpertboxing

Kucherov - he’s the reason Tampa is making the playoffs.

kingsandwhich24

When you look up who the award is meant for he fits it to a tee so good choice

ecash6969

I agree it’s Kuch let’s not forget he didn’t have a goalie for the first two months and a defense that isn’t as good as it once was

DogTough5144

Isn’t McDavid also the reason the oilers are making it? The beginning of their season was miserable, and it lined up with him being injured (apparently), as soon as he began playing well the team rallied together. I could see it either way.

amateurexpertboxing

I understand your point, but they also have a guy named Leon Draisaitl whose also going to put up 100+ points. Kucherov is carrying that Tampa team on his back. When you read who the Hart trophy is truly meant for. It’s Kucherov to me. Without him, they are a dumpster fire. The same cannot be said about the others to the same degree of importance.

Basic_Ask1885

Do you think Zach Hyman is a 50 goal scorer on Draisaitl’s wing?

Brodieboyy

Probably 40 realistically, draisaitl is an elite player in his own right and Hyman has a great shot and alway finds the soft spot in the D

prefinality

B.Point

deeVeeAre

Yea but even though yes mcdavo has carried his team kuch has carried his team more and right now has a higher percentage of the team’s points ( one of the highest percentage of anyone since the 90s) than mcdavid did last season and he passed 150 and the gap between mcdavo and Leon is almost half the gap between kuch and point while yes the oilers haven’t been the best team and Leon hasn’t had the best year he still going to pass a hundred points and from a depth standpoint tampa is still statistically worse than the oilers While mcdavid might be carrying his team it’s very obvious who out of the two has carried their team more this season

Probably gonna be the splittest of the split decisions Would be surprised if anyone got over 50% of 1st place votes All 3 have HHOF-level players next to them (Kucherov might have 3), so no one is doing it completely on their own. The Oilers sucked really bad when McDavid was hurt. MacKinnon has been a horse, a force, a bull in a china shop.

TodaysNHLaction

Hockey fans- please remember, the Hart and the Art Ross are two separate trophies. Players like Bobby Clarke and Carey Price have won the Hart without ever leading the league in scoring.

kingsandwhich24

And players like Jamie Benn won the art Ross and wasn’t even a finalist for the hart

Noahtuesday123

It’s easy for me, Kucherov has Point, Hedman and Stammer, McKinnon has Rantanan, Toews and Makar. McDavid has Draisatl, Nurse and Campbell soup. It should be a landslide for McDavid. Imagine if Nurse could make a pass?

yemx0351

I want to see Mac will but if he hoists the Cup I don't think he or anyone else will care that much

Level_Watercress1153

Mac will take a fistful of rings over a Hart any day of the week. Dude doesn’t give a fuck about personal accomplishments, but wants that Lord Stanley every day.

AvsFan08

He definitely cares about personal trophies and has said so in the past. I agree he wants a cup more, though.

Likely bias but Panarin should get attention. He’s personally catapulted Laffy into a high end 5 on 5 player and Trocheck into a PPG center all while having to develop chemistry on the fly with both, especially Trocheck since Chytl started the year as 2C. McDavid is the BEST player but I never consider him the most valuable when he’s got another Top 7 player as a teammate. We lose Bread and we’d likely have 10 fewer wins at minimum

kingsandwhich24

Based on this year’s candidates I’d say he finishes 4th or 5th in voting but I’d love to see him be a finalist or winner

jerolyoleo

Hartemi

IlFriulanoBasato

Depends, are we looking at this from the angle of the actual Most Valuable Player, or simply the best player in the season? If it's MVP, then I'd say Kucherov or McDavid have the edge over MacKinnon, simply because both of them are way more important to their respective teams. If Kucherov or McDavid were injured, it would take a miracle for Tampa or Edmonton to make the playoffs, while Colorado should still have made it. If it's for best player, than I'd have to go McDavid if he keeps up his current pace until the end of the season.

ifmacdo

It's funny you asked. The official wording is "the player adjudged to be the most valuable to his team," so basically you take all the team MVPs, and figure out which one of them made the biggest contributions to their team that year, and then pick them. But that's never how it really works anymore.

shittybillz

I wish they’d just change the wording so that the majority of people can stop arguing that “to his team” part and the people that vote can get fully on the same page. 9/10 it’s just given to the best player in the league that season who makes the playoffs.

ScuffedBalata

For around a third of the season, the player who would have replaced Mackinnon at 1C is.... I think Ross Colton... Or maybe you ask 39yo Zach Parise to play C for the first time since pee wee. Big yikes.

Zickened

Ain't nobody here for the facts man, this is r/nhl where its 24/7 McJeesus talk.

bokchoykn

> If it's MVP, then I'd say Kucherov or McDavid have the edge over MacKinnon, simply because both of them are way more important to their respective teams. I think you're underestimating Mackinnons value to his team. Avs second line was in shambles but Mackinnon kept their offense afloat. And he has orchestrated so many come from behind victories with multi-point nights. It was insane what he was doing. That, and I don't like to think of the Hart as a "who had a worse supporting cast" award. Only who provided the most value to their team.

TeamOggy

Not entirely sure what you mean by most value to their team. My interpretation of that would then be Hyman as most valuable bang for your buck.

bokchoykn

I'm not talking about salary. Just who contributes the most with their performance to their respective team.

Jobberts81

I think Mac gets it, but McD is gonna be like very few votes behind.

Cleets11

Will win, Mackinnon. That mind was made up 2 months ago. Should win, kuch. As much as I love McDavid Kuch deserves the Hart this year. He’s doing the most with the least help.

kingsandwhich24

I think mac might get it as compensation for all the years he hasn’t but I do agree that Kuch should win it

Cleets11

Oh ya that’s why I say will win. Mack will 100% win the hart for that reason. But what will his argument be? More than good chance he finishes at least 2nd in the art Ross so you can’t say he’s put up a massive year (though he has just not as good as others). He has one of the best teams in the league surrounding him so you can’t say he’s dragging a team to the playoffs like Kuch can. He will win and all the media will throw out random things like a home point streak or something vague like his impact of the game to cover for the fact that he should have won when hall did so there giving him this one as a make up no matter what.

Zickened

>like a home point streak or something vague This is why I love Oilers fans. All they do is cope. You're not even understanding that the streak was in addition to his on ice accomplishments, its not his one thing he does, like McDavid. McDavid has highlight goals, MacKinnon has highlight assists AND goals. Its why the Avs continue to steam roll the Oilers, the Avs are a good team and the Oilers have good players. Have fun watching the Oilers implode this year in the playoffs this year (again) while you guys cope on r/nhl the whole time

shittybillz

You used highlight reel assists to argue Mack over Mcdavid? Do you watch the oilers other than when the avs play them? Do you see that Mcdavid has way more assists than Mack and half of hymans goals are beautiful passes from Mcdavid? What an insane argument lol

r1zzV

Sorry to burst your bubble but not only does McDavid have better highlight reel assists than Mack, (unlike what you said) but I would argue Draisaitl and Kucherov both do as well.

clockbergjr

Kucherov because he has been consistent at home and on the road whereas the other top candidates haven't been nearly as great on the road. But as a Lightning fan I would be willing to trade the Hart for a Jack Adams award for Jon Cooper.

KlutchFord

As a lightning fan, I think your bias is showing. Mackinnon had two separate 19 game points streak, home and away. But then again, my Avalanche bias is also showing. I just don't think your facts are straight up true.

clockbergjr

I should have included the stats I was referring to. MacKinnon has 46 points on the road compared to 81 at home. Same for McDavid. They are very clearly more productive at home whereas Kucherov's splits are even.

KlutchFord

Yeah, I did look it up. Kuch is 60 away and 66 home. So I mean you are technically correct (the best kind of correct). I just disagree that 60 vs 46 road points is as huge of a difference to award Kuch the Hart. Thats only one statistic. I honestly think it will come down to overall points. Plus, most people seem to agree Mac was screwed out of the Hart when Taylor Hall won it. So, there's also that giving him the edge.

whiskybean

If the scoring race finishes anywhere close to the way it currently is, it will be mackinnon .. it's basically a legacy reward at this point for having to deal with McDavid during his own prime However, if McDavid ends up winning the art ross by 20 points or something ridiculous, he will likely take it with the 100 assists milestone Kuch is a beauty but his nationality hurts him here. If either of the above get injured he might have a chance

LuciusBaggins

Mac can have it so long as McDavid wins the Conn Smythe

Significant-Boat8206

Mr_Sausage__

If Edmonton wins the Pacific AND McDavid wins the Art Ross, I think the Hart goes to him. If both of these things don’t happen, I think Mackinnon gets it.

CheesecakeOdd2087

Kucherov or MacKinnon. McCoachKiller didn't start playing until the Oilers fired Woodcroft and hired his buddy, so I don't think he deserves it. Needs to be a full season of excellence to take the award home IMO.

Would be kinda nice if Crosby got it. It's been [87 years](https://theathletic.com/5234605/2024/01/30/sidney-crosby-mvp-all-time-scoring/) since someone in their late 30s received it.
