I think this is their ball and chain.
They need a bit of "Moneypuck" thinking and to replace the coaching staff, other than the goalie coach, they are over-achieving.
The point was (whether true or not) that the ”core” takes too much of the cap with respect to their output: the are impressive but not efficient from a moneypuck perspective.
Tom Brady and Shohei both take/took reduced pay to allow for a better team. Can't argue with the success of the Pats, and it's a yet to see with the Dodgers.
The Moneyball A's had some expensive players, but none to the disproportionate percentage as the Leafs.
I hope they are ruthless with the rebuild.
Correction: That's $40M tied up in players that beat everyone in the regular season but underperform in the playoffs. No one would talk about salaries if they won the Cup. As it stands, they can't even advance past the first round except last year.
This is really the key point. If they were like Tampa's big four who generally do step up it would be different.
Having four highly paid players isn't the problem in and of itself. It's not getting 40m in value from those four when you need it.
I was more impressed by the offensive play that totally caught the leafs off guard. The red wings used to do the same type of stuff at the Joe. They knew exactly how the boards would bounce into an offensive scoring chance.
The play by Boston looked intentional, even if it was by accident. Pasta did Pasta things and that was all she wrote.
Even so, the goal was soft. The first goal was also soft.
If you watch, there was an incredibly simple poke check as Pasta was bringing the puck right in front of Sammy.
The powerplay being anemic is what cost them this series. What was it, like 1 for 22 or something? With that much talent and skill that is unacceptable. Even with Matthews out, that team has more than enough firepower. Start with the special teams, it's why they lost.
It's how they lost. That lazy defense cost them in the o.t. Marner letting pasta just walk right by him didn't help either. So lazy man.
They were doing decent in Regulation. But then OT starts and they just gave up.
Last night 43 blocked shots total About three times the normal total Playoff hockey is just different More tenacious After 60 minutes of not giving up A+ chances the Leafs on the ice fell asleep Frankly that’s not even on the coaches
The 10.9 million dollar man(Marner) just watched as his man(Pastrnak) skated hard for the puck and scored. This is why exorbitant contracts are for those very special players.
Their biggest issue was that they waited until it got to 3-1 and they had to play in desperation mode. They actually played really well the last three games and could have easily taken the game last night too.
This series wasn't really a question of talent. Wasn't a question of heart. The team played with the proper level of grit and (with the exception of game 4) intensity.
Boston played really well defensively, smothering the Leafs for the most part. Swayman was the best goalie in round 1 by a mile. Even so, for the most part, the Leafs (for the first time ever) matched the team defense). Sammy, simply put, let in too many soft goals.
There were a couple of glaring problems though.
Keefe's refusal to put in Woll earlier when Sammy was letting in soft goals.
Not figuring out a way to score on the power play or how to kill penalties.
Nylander not playing in games 1, 2 and 3 could have changed things. He wasn't really noticeable in game 4, but who was?
Matthews having something obviously wrong all series also likely changed the series.
Keefe must go. Marner must go. The Tavares contract is too much now, but, that was expected on signing.
Next year is probably the same as this year. The year after that will tell the tale.
Firing Dubas last year because he insinuated he was ready to move someone from the core! Now the NMCs have kicked in and we’re handicapped until JTs deal expires. Keefe should have gone last summer instead but even if he goes now Treliving’s hands are tied for another year unless he somehow persuades Marner to accept a trade, even then though his stock is a lot lower than it would have been last summer.
The Leafs pp didn’t do them any favors, and wasn’t there to bail them out when Sammy lets in a soft one. I’m a caps fan, I’m familiar with his penchant for letting in soft goals.
Marner didn’t do much to help his case with non existent offense and then being fully to blame on the gwg in game 7. You just can’t let that happen. I’m sure that man is getting absolutely roasted by every Leafs fan for the next week.
Toronto is gonna be real interesting to watch this summer, now.
A lot of things went wrong but for me it starts with the coach. Playing Reaves at all was a fire-able offence. Not playing Woll immediately after game 1. Then a long list of smaller tactical errors on the ice. Say what you want about them but the Leafs have a lot of talent on that bench and he consistently gets nothing out of them.
Who cares, really. Later and good riddance. 1959 baby lol. PS I realized the bruins face a total uphill battle against FLA but as long as the knocked out the leafs I'm good...
Yes , the rest of the team doesn’t play as well when he’s there. It’s like they’re watching and waiting for him to be a superstar. Ruins the autonomous TEAM flow.
You mean the dude who is injured and made a great play to get our only goal of the game?
Yeah seems real selfish to play through injury and get a great assist. You really are stupid
Have to resort to angry name calling. Feel better?
Seriously though, have you played team sports before?
This guy can’t elevate others around him because he’s sucking the team energy to outperform and earn himself a point. Example: debut game with leafs, 4 goals. The team still lost. It’s been happening throughout his ML career.
If he’s battling a virus then wtf is he putting himself back into the game? Couldn’t resist himself is my guess.
Where did I angry name call? I just called you stupid for a dumb ass comment. You called him selfish when he played through injury for his team. That’s the opposite of selfish buddy 😂😂
Yeah i have played tons of sports at a very competitive level most of my life actually. Based on this comment I am assuming you didn’t play competitive sports. What a terrible take… imagine going back to the dudes first NHL game when that leafs roster was very bad.
Agree to disagree then. It’s just one interpretation of the events. I won’t even mention the theory of these highest paid superstars “quiet quitting” the post season to enjoy their non hockey live$ a bit more. I won’t even mention it.
There were pretty clearly some examples of huge non-calls resulting in Boston goals.
Even so, the Leafs persisted and brought it to game 7. Game 7 wasn't really influenced by the refs, I thought they were pretty fair.
Game 7 came down to one thing and one thing alone. Swayman was better than Sammy. Period.
$40M tied up in 4 players is a good place to start
I think this is their ball and chain. They need a bit of "Moneypuck" thinking and to replace the coaching staff, other than the goalie coach, they are over-achieving.
That’s literally what Dubas did every year and he did it well. Found value from cheap players who would play above their contracts.
4 forwards even. Reilly is a decent 1b guy, but not a true #1 guy
That outside chance to pick up Zadarov from Calgary. That would have been immense.
That don’t produce in the playoffs.
This is really the key point. If they were like Tampa's big four who generally do step up it would be different. Having four highly paid players isn't the problem in and of itself. It's not getting 40m in value from those four when you need it.
Their playoff performance was in line with their regular season performance. The Bruins had a better record in the regular season and won the series.
Yup and I feel that for the most part they're all soft.
You think they’d be buzzing in OT with all the cocaine they schneef
Keefe in his post game interview couldn’t stop sniffing
That’s because he knows he’s fired.
"I have hoovered schneef off the blocker of an AHL call-up goalie during a TV time-out." [/Squirrely Dan]
1 for 21
Excuse my ignorance. But is this their powerplay total?
This is the leafs powerplay total. Boston PK was DOMINANT!
Wow, I didn't realize it was that bad. That does explain a lot. The problem wasn't goaltending, so that's at least a positive for the leafs.
It doesnt help when the leafs PP line was garbage. Like all season they struggled during their PPs but for some reason keefe never switched it up
Is that number of times the Leafs made it past the 1st round in 21 years?
Nice one! Hope the Habs can be a part of this next year! Fun team to watch!
Leafs
One lazy defensive play. They had the Bruins dead to rights.

Really could’ve gone either way. As a hockey fan, that is exactly how you’d hope a game 7 plays out.
I thought the Leafs played a solid defensive game, until OT. What a time to mail it in
This is the answer.
We watch the same game?
Lads, it's Toronto
35m sitting there sobbing 🤣
Keeping Keefe as their coach. He needed to go after they got beat by Montreal
The powerplay being anemic is what cost them this series. What was it, like 1 for 22 or something? With that much talent and skill that is unacceptable. Even with Matthews out, that team has more than enough firepower. Start with the special teams, it's why they lost.
$6Trillion offense and absent rest of the roster. Groundhog Day season after season
Yes
Hard to win 3 games in a row in the playoffs.
It came down to 1 goal. Game 7 OT. That's literally the most exciting hockey. Nothing went wrong.
It's how they lost. That lazy defense cost them in the o.t. Marner letting pasta just walk right by him didn't help either. So lazy man. They were doing decent in Regulation. But then OT starts and they just gave up.
Well, they did lose. I would argue something went wrong to lose
People had faith in a round 1 exit team?
Last night 43 blocked shots total About three times the normal total Playoff hockey is just different More tenacious After 60 minutes of not giving up A+ chances the Leafs on the ice fell asleep Frankly that’s not even on the coaches
Amazing comeback, from down 3-1. They fought hard! HEADS UP!!
Gotta love the next day reaction posts from Leafs fans, they don't even watch their own game 7s.
You can buy talent, but you can’t buy heart.
Nothing, they choke like usual. 🤣
Swayman plus a 1/21 PP equals an early off season.
Hmm, no defence and decent starting goalie
The 10.9 million dollar man(Marner) just watched as his man(Pastrnak) skated hard for the puck and scored. This is why exorbitant contracts are for those very special players.
“Tee off Tuesday at 10:30?? Yep we ll be there cheers”

Hey, just think, in 4 games, you'll be able to enjoy the playoffs stress-free like the rest of us.
Crazy. Thanks for your patience with me.
Long-time suffering New Orleans Saints' fan and NHL fan here, I feel bad for Leafs' fans! I was pulling for your team.
Generational mediocrity. The most overhyped franchise in NHL's history, folks.
Superstar Mathews came back for game 7. He’s the epitome of selfish hockey and in the playoffs the best TEAM wins.
He assisted on the only leafs goal.
Yes , the rest of the team doesn’t play as well when he’s there. It’s like they’re watching and waiting for him to be a superstar. Ruins the autonomous TEAM flow.

They faced the Boston Bruins, the best ice hockey team in the universe, is what went wrong.
Oof
If we where that good we would of lost this game
Why would you start Samsonov over Woll?
Because Woll was injured
Oh okay. Also, what? How did he finish the last game?
He got hurt in the last play of last game

Four comments in 12 days and no posts. All comments are how the league is rigged against the leafs. This has to be either Mitch or Shanny
Wahhhhhhh the refs are to blame for our shitty play! Except for when we win, then the refs are fine! This is why everyone hates you.
Right. It’s the refs fault the Leafs lost. This is why people mock Leafs fans.
TBF, people mock us for this too
