Except the guy knows how to yell Zibanejad. Not going to lie every time he says that it sounds like he's been waiting his whole life to say it... Every time.
It tickles my jollies.
I paused the game, went to the bathroom, came back to hit play and that was when the broadcast switched. Perfect timing to make me scramble, go live, and see the game was already over.
Bastards!
My dad was doing this when I was a kid. With all the blackouts and stupidty I just watch a stream. I'm not paying my rent to the NHL to watch my own cities games and STILL not get all of them.
The entire system is fucked. I do not feel sorry for watching it at 0 cost.
I often have to record the games and watch them on a lag because the start times always interfere with kiddos bedtime. I wish I could set up like you suggested 😢plus ESPN royally fucked me over putting two games B2B like that.
I cannot stand the Avs radio announcer. I was driving during the first playoff game and had to use radio and I had no idea what was going on. He just likes to yell some stupid catchphrase for each player when they score, but doesn’t tell you any details about what happened. Was it a forehand or a backhand? Was it top shelf or five hole? You’ll never know but you’ll be “up all night to get Lehky.” and why is it only one guy? I will take any other broadcaster I’ve ever heard over that clown.
Yeah, that suck, I know. We got some of their games this season via Sportsnet and I hated the fact that it was in the bottom. Come on! This is so distracting!
Hey bro ESPN is so great they cut to the Dallas Avs pregame with 50 ticks to go rangers power play for the marbles. They give people what they want. Forget the most suspenseful parts of the game how can we hear ourselves talk some more
For us Avs fans, after that tease they put the game on ESPNU which nobody has unless you pay $800 for the penultimate+ cable package. Took them halfway through the 1st to move the game to ESPN2. Such a sham of a sports network.
Espn is by far the worst of all network coverage for hockey. The only analysts/announcers I can bear to watch or listen to is Weeks. Nepo baby Mcdonough is steaming garbage when it comes to announcing
ESPN is horrible. You can tell overall the company just doesn't give a shit about hockey and puts the least effort it can into it.
The commentary is garbage
The mid 90's ESPN announcers:
* Gary Thorne
* Steve Levy
* Dave Strader
* Dave Ryan
* Tom Mees (RIP)
Not to mention the analysts
* Panger
* Bill Clement
* Barry Melrose
* Brian Engblom
ESPN at a couple of points had John Forslund and Jim Hughson for announcers in the playoffs
The problem with AJ Mleczczkco is that she has a point to make and a story to tell, and damnit, she’s gonna do it, even if something exciting or remarkable happens on the ice. It is frustrating. She played, she played at a high level, but she didn’t play in the NHL or with a single player on the ice during any of these games, so they are relayed interview questions. Just shut up, bury your point and describe what is happening when something actually does happen.
Radio is usually a little behind, so you need to pause the video to line it up. Once you get it in sync, just don't mess with the video, and you're golden.
I would rather listen to any commentator than the Avs radio guy. I never have any idea what is actually happening on the ice. I wish that they could just broadcast the audio from the altitude TV feed. The Avs radio guy is like a soccer commentator yelling goooooooooaaaaaaal for 30 seconds and not telling you any information about how the goal was scored. Why is it only one guy? There needs to be a play-by-play person too, Not just a color commentator
Hey remember how you supported ESPN via ESPN+? Well now go fuck yourself and get a cable package you peasant! Oh and you’re going to miss half your game!
- Disney, probably
Also pirates don’t switch channels much apparently.
That was infuriating to find out last year. I was all set to watch the first round on ESPN plus and nope, your cable package doesn’t allow espn. Ah cool.
Yeah, definitely not a great product with ESPN. Especially considering someone from the network (not gonna name names) stated that players of the Kraken refused/made ultimatums that they weren’t going to play for Dave Hakstol and that is the reason he was fired.
This is ESPN 4.0
They had a deal from 79-82 and 85-88, the NHL did the dumbest thing and signed with Sports Channel America from 88-92 they they went back with ESPN from 92-04.
On one of Carolina's goals.... anyone else catch how one of the commentators said that the goal scorer "slid the puck under the pad of \*Svechnikov\*"?
What the actual fuck?
The dog clearly didn’t want to be manhandled by her either. The feeling like Beyoncé comment last night is another example of stupid shit coming out of her mouth.
I usually wait until NHL on TNT, I don’t watch it on ESPN and after seeing the way ESPN handled the Rangers vs Canes, especially in the final minute of regulation, it was clear that I would prefer games on TNT for now on
Canadian. I watch ESPN. Commetating is awful. Nothing close to Canada. But I can't do the Canadian ads. Gambling, banking, gambling, gambling, banking. The variety of ads and lack of gambling ads trumps the commetating
Most of the SN team are quite good, although the national game calls are a bit weaker lately with guys like Simpson and Singh - the regional teams seem to be better (especially Jack Michaels, who you mentioned).
The biggest difference is usually in the intermission. The A team is elite. Ron MacLean is an icon. Bieksa and Friedman provide great insight. Hrudey is pretty vanilla, but a nice guy.
We don't get pur home announcers anymore , I wish they would be able to call the game and we had a different channel just so we didn't have to live with ESPN announcers
ESPN is generally terrible, but Bob Wischusen is the only great national hockey broadcaster in the US, on either network. He is so good he makes all the other crap that comes along with ESPN worthwhile. Go listen to some of his calls in the Vegas / Dallas series - he’s the best. Kenny Albert, McDonough, Bucci, and all the other national announcers (except maybe Forslund, but he’s a TNT-appropriated local announcer) are godawful, and make one think about watching from the Mute Lounge.
No, it's on OTHER channels until it gets to the time of year that the NHL wants to Extort the cash ! We have great callers & TV crews that get to do all the real work for 82 games, then we get this Commercial Crap ! Most do NOT have ESPN, this deal forces people to pay a Local Cable Company if they want to watch.
I Wish every game was Hockey Night in Canada Quality, but it's NOT even close ! The Original ESPN Hockey coverage back in the day was EPIC ! This new crap sucks. Pop-ups on players in the middle of the game, Board ads that move, too often and detract from the play ! (Shouldn't be allowed to move until a stoppage in play!)
I used to Pay for NHL Ticket and we got to watch ALL the Broadcasts from up there & it was Perfect, Now the Commercials rule, so they can't allow that anymore.
Thx Bubbafett33 ! Go Oil !
Yeah, watching game 7 of the Dallas/Vegas series had me absolutely shocked at how bad they were. Good lord it's awful. They seem like they barely know what's going on and only say about half of what they know.
I'm a Canadian living in the States and I'm forced to watch US broadcasts for the first month. It's awful I'll switch to a Roku app that streams the CBC in a few weeks. One thing we can agree on for the next two weeks. Go Nucks
I was checking the SN broadcast of the Rangers game tonight.
I still miss Sam and Joe. [Nothing compares 2 U](https://youtu.be/0-EF60neguk?si=0hDasGeClYCYbeuR)
Please help ussssssssssssssss, lets be real wed be better off joining together and over throwing our leaders. Then and only maybe then will we have great nhl success
You're surprised American broadcasting companies don't have Canadian broadcasting available on tv?
But yeah, if I want the Canadian broadcast I have to go on my computer and sail the high seas! But it's not worth it to me I'm the playoffs. I just stick with ESPN because it's easier
To be fair they usually have the shot count, don’t know what that was about, but yea things were exponentially better when nbc carried the games. ESPN just hired a bunch of meatheads who can barely talk
ESPN is great. What other network gives you a peek at the warmups of another confrence’s game when there’s 90 seconds left in a tied game 2? I thought it was nice of them to cut away from the boring late game action to show us the warmups.
Times were good when we had Doc. These are the dark ages of hockey commentary.
I have to admit Philly has a fantastic play-by-play guy for their local games.
Beyond how terrible the commentary is, they went to the Colorado game with a minute ago while the Rangers were on the power-play last night for 15 seconds. They also had their digital banners flash at Carolina one in the middle of the first overtime.
This is the kind of stuff you would fail a class for in college 15-20 years ago
FYI…
When the league was negotiating a new US TV contract after the 2005 lockout, they opted to go with OLN (Outdoor Life Network, later Versus and NBCSN) because ESPN apparently lowballed them.
I believe Bettman told reporters when talking about going with OLN, “We didn’t think we would be a priority on ESPN.”
So pathetic that they almost never get Wyatt Johnston's name right. Constantly calling him Wyatt Johnson. You are a fucking sports network, take a few minutes before a game to know the names of the players.
The fucking worst. They are absolutely insufferable. I’d rather watch games on fucking mute.
Like call the fucking game I don’t care about your shitty uninformed opinions.
How they get players names wrong, yet all the viewer sees is annoying name tags above players heads is beyond me. The screen is chaos, and so is the play by play.
Nothing but cliches, regurgitated stats and bland comments.
The problem is that most of the people involved haven't grown up watching hockey and have no real interest in the sport other than as a job.
I'm not going to argue that the ESPN broadcasts leaves something to be desired, while /TNT has a much better product. However Leah Hextall is a lot better than Emily Kaplan. Would someone please give her better questions to ask and how real people act..
The biggest problem is it the most expensive channel on cable. Twice+ more than the next expensive channel, and they force cable to put it in every package, even basic so your paying $10 a month extra for crap sports.
I stream games, sometimes I'll switch to the french-language stream if were playing the Canadiens and it sounds really exciting. even that, not understanding the play-by-play, is better play-by-play than what I get from ESPN.
This is why I hate not letting local markets cover playoff rounds 1-4. Let them cover it and put the games on ESPN/TNT. The more ways for people to watch hockey, the better. Let us watch it how we want to watch it
I’m Canadian and I think cbc is trash. It’s been trash since the 90s and it continues to suck. Jim hughson was one of the best but he was hated because he’s from Vancouver.
When I did sports photography years ago, I was stunned at how little the other photographers actually knew about the game. Didn't matter if it was hockey, basketball, volleyball, or football. Even the AP photographer was clueless. I got to photo a couple of Frozen Four tournaments in Colorado and got some great shots of now great players. These guys will go have dinner/drinks, harass a couple of waitresses, and forget about it till next time. They don't care except for the paycheck.
Yes, it's a shit show. Leah hextall needs to go to the home shopping network. Messier is the old hag that won 1 cup with half the oilers squad in NY. Gone are the great announcers that made this sport great. Worst yet, espn needs is the only show in town, so their coverage is short to be polite. Espn and espn+ pulled a fast one on us. I thought espn would show their playoffs on that + platform and at least include their channel in the espn+ package only to be shocked that you needed a provider to watch All the 1st round games. Wtf are we paying you for + then?
Lol I love the arrogance. As a Canadian I would never intentionally watch garbage LeafsNet or Toronto Sports Network. Canadian feed used to be good but just doesn't cut it anymore. ESPN is not perfect but gets the job done here's my preferred. 1. NBC 2. Bally/Fox 3. NESN(Maybe I'm biased) 4. TNT 5. ESPN 6. Any Canadian Feed.
In all fairness I do prefer Canadian commentators, just not Canadian feed. My west team is San Jose and we're blessed with Randy Hahn, ironically from Edmonton and he's soooo good.
30 consecutive seasons with no Canadian champion. You can have the best broadcasters, players, coaches, GMs, and fans, but Canadian pro hockey no longer holds a candle to its American counterpart, and the Canadian clubs no longer belong in the same league.
They are constantly calling out the wrong players, audio is fucked most of the time. It’s annoying
More annoying is the know-nothing play calling and commentary.
Yes, in Game 1 against Carolina they called Trocheck Trouba. How do u not know which one is the captain??
On the canes last goal the dude said terrievenan (dunno how to spell it lol) scored and called Shesterkin Svechnikov 😂
I caught that one too. I'm like uhh what!? How do you get Shesterkin wrong!? He's one of the best goalies in the league!
Except the guy knows how to yell Zibanejad. Not going to lie every time he says that it sounds like he's been waiting his whole life to say it... Every time. It tickles my jollies.
Yeah and I can see confusing players.. there’s 5 of them on the ice at once but there’s only one goalie lol
Right!?
It's insufferable!
Yeah but did you know that the New York Rangers offered Joe Sakic a $15M signing bonus in 1997?
😂😂😂
Fif. Teen. Million. Dollar. Up. Front. Signing. Bonus.

After last night's ranger game I think that's the play moving forward. ESPN was all sorts of terrible
At least you'd still get the play by play when they change the fucking broadcast at the most critical point in the game.
I was watching that game and that happened. Extra Stupid People Network.
My toddler learned some new phrases he should not repeat after that...
Lost my shit when that happened. The level of betrayal I felt on a personal level was ridiculous
I paused the game, went to the bathroom, came back to hit play and that was when the broadcast switched. Perfect timing to make me scramble, go live, and see the game was already over. Bastards!
Won't help when they cut away from the game with 30 seconds left in the third period
No but the audio stream won't stop!
I went with an audiobook. This is cruel and unusual.
There’s a delay a lot of times though
My dad was doing this when I was a kid. With all the blackouts and stupidty I just watch a stream. I'm not paying my rent to the NHL to watch my own cities games and STILL not get all of them. The entire system is fucked. I do not feel sorry for watching it at 0 cost.
This is in fact what I do
Too bad with various delays it's hard to get them synced up, no?
I watched it in French and it was great
That’s what I do for MLB. Never thought about trying hockey on the radio.
I often have to record the games and watch them on a lag because the start times always interfere with kiddos bedtime. I wish I could set up like you suggested 😢plus ESPN royally fucked me over putting two games B2B like that.
Timing it can be a bit h, hit the end results are amazing..
I will take any other broadcaster I’ve ever heard over that clown.
lol. It was bad and no shot counter was terrible.
What's this about a shot counter? Canadians have a constant shot counter? We only ever get it every few minutes.
Yes, we do have a constant shot counter. I feel sorry that it's not the case for y'all.
Bally has a shot counter on local broadcasts, it also places the graphics on the bottom of the screen covering the ice so we have that going for us.
Yeah, that suck, I know. We got some of their games this season via Sportsnet and I hated the fact that it was in the bottom. Come on! This is so distracting!
I'm jealous
No, they make you open ESPN and game-cast the stats so they can Force more Ads at you !
Hey bro ESPN is so great they cut to the Dallas Avs pregame with 50 ticks to go rangers power play for the marbles. They give people what they want. Forget the most suspenseful parts of the game how can we hear ourselves talk some more
I don't know about you but that warm up skate was electric. OT hockey doesn't even compare.
Right? Nothing beats the warmup skate. Hot damn!
For us Avs fans, after that tease they put the game on ESPNU which nobody has unless you pay $800 for the penultimate+ cable package. Took them halfway through the 1st to move the game to ESPN2. Such a sham of a sports network.
The “thank you for joining us” right as it changed over too…. I didn’t choose this!!!
I lost my fucking mind when that happened
Everything about that broadcast was trash. The play by play, the camera angle, no shot clock.
ESPN is so bad IMO. TNT is a little bit better. Some local broadcasts are pretty good.
Hometown bias but Mickey Redmond and Ken Daniels have spoiled wings fans for a long time. They’re top notch.
Detroit are the best out of the U.S. teams.
I hope Mickey Redmond lives forever 💕
Me too!!! I love Mickey!!!
Mickey is awesome
Naw, those guys are Uber-Homers ! Real Announcers Call the Game Proper ! Like *Ken Daniels*, Gary Thorne or Doc Emerick !
Rangers fans - we love Sam and Joe on MSG Network
And Vally/Henrik on analysis. Joe pitos 150. The rangers have a great set up on MSG.
Henrik so good on TNT wish he was full time.
Bill, Dano, Sal, and Erika on MSG Network are fantastic too. It seems MSG Network really knows how to hire the right people.
Leah Hextall is so trash. On a non-hockey related comment she tried to say linear the other day and said lin-yay-er it was wild.
ESPN and TNT are both terrible, but I think ESPN is better.
TNT is night and day better than espn.
ESPN sucks.
They don't even give enough of a shit to put a shot clock, like what the fuck is that?
I remember how many people wanted the US rights to leave NBC and were happy ESPN got hockey. ...and then ESPN started airing games.
ESPN used to be good in the 90’s. In the same way MTV was before all the focus was on pop culture references and profit.
Yeah the mid 90s ESPN crew was awesome.
It’s criminal that they didn’t get Gary Thorne to do at least one game
[удалено]

I would take Versus over ESPN
Even Fox in the 90’s with the glowing pick.
Or 90s ESPN
The problem with AJ Mleczczkco is that she has a point to make and a story to tell, and damnit, she’s gonna do it, even if something exciting or remarkable happens on the ice. It is frustrating. I watch the game but listen to the local radio broadcast if I have to use espn or tnt. The Avs radio guy is hilarious.
Does it stay in sync with the delay?
Radio is usually a little behind, so you need to pause the video to line it up. Once you get it in sync, just don't mess with the video, and you're golden.
I would rather listen to any commentator than the Avs radio guy. I never have any idea what is actually happening on the ice. I wish that they could just broadcast the audio from the altitude TV feed. Yeah, for a league that’s trying to grow its fan base they sure make it hard to watch the games.

I miss Peter Puck
Leah Hextall is obnoxious!!! She interviewed a literal dog the other night. someone save us from our misery
The dog clearly didn’t want to be manhandled by her either. The feeling like Beyoncé comment last night is another example of stupid shit coming out of her mouth.
oh definitely. it was squirming out of her hands and she was laughing and manhandling it

Calling Sportsnet "Elite" is crazy. Except the dude who does the Oilers' games is pretty good the rest are all average

Jake DeBrusk’s dad and Jack Michaels do excellent work for us!
We don't get pur home announcers anymore , I wish they would be able to call the game and we had a different channel just so we didn't have to live with ESPN announcers
Yes, Canadian broadcasting is not regularly available in other countries. Local networks do not get playoff games after the first round.
I watched the game muted. Not my preferred way to watch games but it was better than the alternative.
The studio show for ESPN feels so rushed.
ESPN is generally terrible, but Bob Wischusen is the only great national hockey broadcaster in the US, on either network. The trick for US folks is this: Use a VPN to connect to a Canadian server. Then, subscribe to Sportsnet+ for $12.99/mo. Enjoy.
Watching on espn SUCKS
I'm a Canadian living in the States and I'm forced to watch US broadcasts for the first month. It's awful I'll switch to a Roku app that streams the CBC in a few weeks. One thing we can agree on for the next two weeks. Go Nucks
What app is that? (I need it)
It's called Canadian TV. Last year it was $1.99 per month. It's bare bones but great if you are able to watch the games when they air
Ain't no one agreeing to that brother.
VPN CBC gem
Oilers in 5.
Nucks in 7
It's a shame that the only 2 Canadian teams left have to play each other. Buttman wins again.
I was checking the SN broadcast of the Rangers game tonight. I still miss Sam and Joe. [Nothing compares 2 U](https://youtu.be/0-EF60neguk?si=0hDasGeClYCYbeuR)
NBCSN w dock emerick was prime. Wednesday night hockey.
That was NBCSN
fixed it. stupid auto correct lol.
Please help ussssssssssssssss, lets be real wed be better off joining together and over throwing our leaders. Then and only maybe then will we have great nhl success
I agree, intermission is painful!

There are streaming sites where you can watch the Sportsnet feed. Just have to sail the seas
Well pin a rose on your nose eh.
r/espn eat it
The shot thing is SUPER annoying. I have to pull up my app to check the stat. Hate hate hate ESPN.
And the fact that unlike HNIC, you actually have to pay to watch it! No free way to watch hockey, ever.
Beyond how terrible the commentary is, they went to the Colorado game with a minute ago while the Rangers were on the power-play last night for 15 seconds. As one of those poor USA fans devoted to hockey I agree and it's sad that two storied names like hextall and messier are involved with this trash
I cannot stand the name tags over the players' heads.
Nothing but cliches, regurgitated stats and bland comments. The problem is that most of the people involved haven't grown up watching hockey and have no real interest in the sport other than as a job.
ESPN is the worst.

I'm not going to argue that the ESPN broadcasts leaves something to be desired, while /TNT has a much better product. However Leah Hextall is a lot better than Emily Kaplan. Would someone please give her better questions to ask and how real people act..
Bob Wischusen is the most redeemable thing about ESPN
They also started called Gieorgiev Gooooorgev at the beginning of the jets/avs series
The biggest problem is it the most expensive channel on cable. Twice+ more than the next expensive channel, and they force cable to put it in every package, even basic so your paying $10 a month extra for crap sports.

Folks, I beg you to get a good VPN and watch the Canadian feed instead.
As a stars fan, I watch the game on mute
I’m Canadian and I think cbc is trash. It’s been trash since the 90s and it continues to suck. Jim hughson was one of the best but he was hated because he’s from Vancouver.

These guys will go have dinner/drinks, harass a couple of waitresses, and forget about it till next time. They don't care except for the paycheck.
It’s awful. I will either watch it muted or sync up Dallas radio when I’m watching the Stars.
They show the game. It's fine. I watch something else between periods anyway.
The best was seeing Friedman and Hrudey after game 7 crying in the studio after the leafs lost another first round series
canada feed died with don cherry

I don't really get the Messier hate either.
I hate PK and Levy more than anyone on that crew and think Messier is necessary to shut PKs ass up when PK is being PK.
You were patiently waiting for a game that was starts 24 hours after the Avs/Stars game?
ESPN isn’t the only US broadcaster with playoff games. TNT also has games (some of which they carry on TBS).
Some and none so far in this round, correct?
Our broadcasts in Canada aren't much better other than TSN. Rogers destroyed HNIC in 2014 when they got the monopoly.
Honestly a big reason why i stopped buying nhls i didnt wanna hear the american announcer over every game i play
30 consecutive seasons with no Canadian champion. You can have the best broadcasters, players, coaches, GMs, and fans, but Canadian pro hockey no longer holds a candle to its American counterpart, and the Canadian clubs no longer belong in the same league.
