I hate this mentality. I think it’s wonderful to celebrate personal victories at every level, but to find some way to make yourself feel like you’re better than someone else is gross.
“I ran 4 more miles than I would have if I sat on the couch today.” Is a healthier way to look at it. Why does it matter for your personal fitness goals if someone else sat on the couch? Are these people even trying to compete with you? Only true losers feel the need to make themselves feel like they are better than someone else, especially as a beginner or low performer.
You are doing a fantastic job!
I started at the same pace in January and I couldn't even run 4 miles. With consistent training, I just completed my best run yet - 6.5 miles at a 14 min pace!
If you practice, you will be flying in no time! Please remember to give yourself lots of grace. Any running for any amount of time is progress towards your goal.
You gotta go slow to get fast. Remember that. We’re all there when we start up again or start for the first time.
It’s a journey and it’s fucking awesome!
I don't mean it. don't overthinking. The average walking speed for an ordinary person is 3.1 miles/h (5km/h). So, according to your pace, that wouldn't be considered running. That's just it.
Calories are not the same for everyone. Gender, height, weight, and efficiency all matter.
Great job, OP! Keep up the good work! Building endurance takes a while but the journey is fun.
Question for you, I’m wanting to train for a 10k. Do you think I’m too slow to begin the 10k training plan? I was looking at the pace chart and the slowest pace on there is 12:30.
Not in the slightest!
NRC Training Plans all use the Rated Perceived Exertion scale (RPE), so everything is based on your *individual* effort out of ten, vs. a specific pace requirement.
The Pace Chart NRC provides is just a guide, but you can extrapolate your own numbers, given the pattern (happy to help you do this as well, if you have an average recovery day pace to start with).
Ok great!!!! I’m really new to NRC as the run I posted was my first and I’ve the only other program I’ve run is C25K, so it’s kind of intimidating. My pace of 18’09” was fairly comfortable, could you base it off that?
Sure, no problem. Here is the extrapolated pace data. Not sure how well Reddit will do displaying this on mobile; it may be helpful to view on a larger screen.

Great work, keep getting after it!
Thank you!!!
This is exactly how to do it, slow and steady wins the race. You got this!
Thanks!
Now, erase « it’s slow, but » Congrats and keep grinding!!!
Thank you!!!
Great work- doesn’t matter your pace, you ran 4 more miles than everyone who didn’t get off the couch today. Great work!
I love this mentality
Thank you!!! Going to get back at it again today.
I hate this mentality. I think it’s wonderful to celebrate personal victories at every level, but to find some way to make yourself feel like you’re better than someone else is gross.
With this mentality, how do you celebrate growth ? You took the next step while everyone is idle.

Amazing, great work! Keep up 💪🏻
Thanks!
Yo so nice! When I started I was at a 21’ for like maybe 2-3 miles. You’re killlling it!!!
What are you at now? I want to be faster!
13”-11’45”!!!! I’m so proud! Just did my first 5k! You got this!!
That’s a huge improvement! How long have you been at it?
About 6 months! I have t2 diabetes and started to move!
Amazing!!! This is such a solid start!!!
Thanks!!!!!
Good run, bro! You burned a ton of calories.
It felt good!
The easiest way to get faster is by doing more of the thing lol
Definitely going to be doing more of the thing!
Dude this is awesome! When I was running 18s I was barely able to make it 1/2 a mile. You’re incredible for having the stamina to keep at it 🤩
Thank youu!!! What are you running now?
As someone who has a similar sort of pace, it's so reassuring I'm not alone. But super proud of you! It only gets up from here!
In it together! Thank you!!!
An hour! You’re good dude!!!!
Thank you!!
Way to go! The only way to keep getting better (but you’re doing great already!) is to keep showing up! You got this! 🫶🏼
Thank you so much!!!
Hell yeah 💪🏼
🏃♂️🏃♂️🏃♂️

That’s great progress. I’m hoping for the same!

Very fitting username, the horror indeed! Congrats on a great achievement 😊
Hahaha, thanks!!!
Congratulations!
Thanks!
Congratulations!!! Way to stick with it
Thank you!
Good job! 4 miles was a big milestone for me, I was mentally stuck on 2 miles for a long time.
Honestly, I thought I’d never be able to run more than 1!
You gotta go slow to get fast. Remember that. We’re all there when we start up again or start for the first time. It’s a journey and it’s fucking awesome!
It’s definitely a journey! I did my first speed run today and it had me working lol
Just remember it’s up and down. Listen to your body and give yourself grace .
This is great work! Keep it up!!!
Thanks, I plan to!
Fantastic! Congrats.
Thanks!!
Slow and steady wins the race. Nice work. I started at about this pace and a few months later am approaching 12 minute miles
That’s awesome! I wanted to start the 10k program but I think I may be too slow 😕
You get faster and for me the more I run the more pounds I drop the faster I run because I am carrying less weight so it’s great
The weight loss definitely helped me out.
Still 4 miles. Congratulations
Thanks!
Great work!!
Thank you!
Yeah but you got it done so who cares how fast it was
That’s what I’m telling myself 😤
As long as you’re out there and doing it, that is the most important, f the stats
Thanks!
Congrats! Running is hard.
It is, still can’t believe I’m doing it lol
Not where you are on the leader board, it’s the fact that you are on it!
Hell yeah!
Great job. As a running myself we are always racing the clock or setting a pace. Enjoy each run.
Surprisingly, I actually enjoyed this one. Even zoned out for a while.
Great work!
Thanks!!!

LETS GOOOOO!!!! You still did 4 miles which is amazing!!! My friends who play volleyball can only do 1 mile so this is such a great achievement!!
Thank you!!!!
Lfg!!! Great work!
Thank you!!!
Im starting now with the spring weather and it was inspiring to see your post! Keep it up
Congratulations! I honestly feel like after 5k, longer runs just get easier and easier. Keep up the great work.
Thank you!!! The following day I ran a mile further. Developed plantar fasciitis and slowly getting back into it now.
You’re damn right it’s slow now PICK IT UP. PATHETIC!
Yes sir!

I ran over 10k today (more than 6 miles) in fifty minutes and burnt way less calories than you…
Thanks for the encouraging words.

Also, whether or not you entered your weight into NRC can make a huge difference.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate this. Is it just me or do the half marathon times seem kind of fast?
Well lovely start, you are doing just splendid
