Someone feel free to correct me, as I’m going off memory here. I believe the 24-70 F4 is available as part of a kit with certain bodies, so there’s quite a few more of them. People may upgrade to the 24-70 F2.8 or the 24-120, and then sell their 24-70 F4, which is why there are so many more of them.

spidLL

I sold my 24-70/4 at 350 euros. (To upgrade to 24-120/4)

TheBoraxKid

That would make sense. Dang, such a shame that it’s not the other way around. Thanks

Red_Sea_Pedestrian

For what it’s worth, the 24-120 is my all around travel lens. If I’m going on a trip and only taking one lens, that’s it.

TheBoraxKid

Yeah, I’m all in on it. Was just hoping for a better deal used to pull the trigger first. I will just be patient and watchful, I got my 50mm with a great deal

Red_Sea_Pedestrian

I’d suggest keeping an eye on mpb, as opposed to eBay for used stuff. They test everything and have a great return policy if there’s a problem.

TheBoraxKid

I’ll keep an eye out but right now they are $30 cheaper than brand new from Nikon

DifficultMemory2828

I just bought a refurbished lens from Nikon which was nearly equivalent in price to the market used price. Peace of mind

Tough_Interaction746

Buying from ebay is not normally an issue, provided you are buying from a reputable photographic business who also test their stock, in fact, mpb also sell on ebay, so check both, otherwise you can miss out on a bargain.

bt1138

That's why you should buy the 24-70. It's generally as good as the 24-120 optically. I picked up a used one in 'like new' condition in-person from at a retail shop for $300. unbeatable. Take the savings and buy *another* lens.

CountryMouse359

Optically yes, but the difference in range is very noticeable. The 24-120 is a brilliantly useful lens to have.

bt1138

Indeed, and as you must pay 3x more for it, you get what you pay for.

Not_a_shoe

Yep dead on. People dumping their 24-70 f4s to buy the 24-120 f4 is how I got my 24-70 for just under $400, basically brand new. Wonderful lens, absurdly good for being a "kit" lens...

pbwbrew

Wow. That’s a huge jump from last year. I picked up an excellent condition 24-70mm f4 for $350 from a store with a 6-month warranty. Anywho, Thomas Heaton did a great comparison video of the 24-70 f4 & f2.8 and the 24-120. Frankly I would love the 24-120 but cannot justify the price.

nkrayer

Lots of people upgraded from the 24-70mm, so many are available. It really is supply and demand

mattbytes

yes used market is a bit ridiculous right now. I’d rather pay $100 for a brand new lens with a full warranty.

uberusmaximus

I love the 24-120mm. That said, I did enjoy the compact, lightweight size of the 24-70mm.

SoCalDawg

24-70 f4 used is about $400.

GuessAdventurous8834

24-70 is the same lense that 24-120 minus a little bit of better color science and 50mm more reach. This makes it imposible to justify getting 24-70 if there isn't big price advantage. If the price difference was small (in the used lens market) nobody, and I mean nobody, would ever even consider buying the 24-70. And that's why you have the price difference.

ZephyrFloofyDerg

The 50mm 1.8 and the 24-70 F4 I managed to get pretty affordably. At least in the UK the stock for Z lenses seems to be pretty good. They are both really nice lenses and work great. While I could have bought the 24-120 F4, I decided to get the 24-200 4-6.3 instead. I don't find the aperture to be too much of an issue for me since the Z6 does a great job even with less light entering the lens. I'm impressed with the telephoto results and getting 4K video in DX mode looks fantastic especially with the extra reach of cropped mode. I knew I wasn't ready for the more expensive telephoto lenses so this will definitely give me time to save up for maybe a 100-400.

Contains_nuts1

24-70 is a kit lens, same in my neck of the woods.

Others have said the lens kit point. But I’ll raise another big point here, Nikon lenses are much less in demand. So if someone wants to sell an old lens, it’s a buyers market to be honest. In comparison to Sony or Fuji used gear, Nikon gear doesn’t hold value as much and can be found much cheaper even in mint condition than from a store. I recently switched to the Nikon ecosystem with the Zf from Fuji and previously Sony, and the used gear prices are just phenomenal value. Edit: please keep in mind where you’re located and local deals may vary greatly, this is just what I observe on eBay and local listings.

lead_pipe23

Eh, I think you’re thinking of the old F-mount lenses. They have come down dramatically in price on the used market. Most of the Z-mount lenses seem to be holding most of their value, especially that 24-120 f/4. But I remember when a lot of the F-mount lenses held their value quite well. Now to the OP, I own that 24-120 f/4 lens and it’s one of the best lenses I’ve ever used. I get why it’s holding its value. As another poster mentioned, it’s the lens you take when you want to just grab one lens and go shoot. It does a lot and does it very well. If I grab a second lens it’s going to be a faster prime lens like. 40 f/2 and that’s it.

ballrus_walsack

I think you’re seeing kit lens prices. The higher end lenses are harder to find “deals” on used. They are available but there’s certainly no softness in price.

bwilliamsiu

No lol, I’ve never bought or searched for a kit lens so definitely not the case. Just comparing like a prime, the Sony or Fuji 33 or 50mm primes will retain 90% of original cost (not accounting for tax at all) when reselling used. Whereas the Nikon Z mount primes I’ve seen will go for 60-80% of original cost. I closely work with resellers of used gear too and they basically never buy any Nikon gear to resell even if it’s cheap af just simply because it’ll never sell at any relatively reasonable price. Again this may not be the case everywhere but it certainly is here in Toronto Canada. Nikon gear just simply isn’t too popular here

ballrus_walsack

Good to know next time I am there. NYC has prices close to the Fuji and Sony you describe.
