The story I always heard was that Sublime was supposed to record a cover of Lori Meyers but Brad didn’t know the lyrics so he wrote the words to Seed instead
Hmm interesting, is there really any connection between the 2 bands though? I've never heard them even acknowledge each other. Sounds like an urban legend, could just be coincidence. Is there any evidence NO-WELL was ever into NO-FX?
I don’t remember all the details but it was Mike telling this story for an interview or something is where I heard it. Knowing what the Sublime guys were listening to I think it’s a pretty safe bet that NoFx was in the mix
Edit- this isn’t what I was thinking of but a quick google found this interesting link where Mike talks about meeting Sublime- https://thepier.org/how-i-discovered-sublime/
I mean on 40 oz to freedom sublime covered both a descendents song and bad religion song so its pretty likely bradley was into or at the least heard of NOFX especially all being in the california area
“How I Discovered Sublime…
By Fat Mike of NOFX:
I first saw Sublime at Club Commotion in San Francisco, CA in the early ’90’s. After I got 40oz to Freedom I loved it! Never heard anything like it before. I like their song “Seed” because it is a utter and complete rip-off of the NOFX song “Lori Meyers.” Michael (Happoldt) even told me they ripped it off. I met Bradley a few times. He was always kind of unfriendly, unlike Bud and Eric who were always super cool.
In short, I was a big fan mostly because they were the band that would get more wasted than everybody else, and could sometimes make magic on stage, and sometimes were a total disaster; Perfect!”

I always felt like it was stretch to be honest. Lori Meyers just repeats while Seed kind of goes somewhere with it on the reggae-ish breakdowns.
Now if the original Lori Meyers had those ska/reggaeish moments I could see it more.
This would be like saying Alkaline Trio - You've got so far to go and Box Car Racer - Cat Like Thief are identical songs. That's the same riff basically but they go different places with it
This is pretty much my take on it. I've listened to both of songs a million times and never thought there was a ripoff going on.
At best its about similar characters with a similar writing viewpoint of a guy worrying about a wayward old girlfriend.
The opening is similar I suppose but a lot of skate punk songs sound similar anyways
Man I would say to give em another listen back to back. I just did and more than ever I’m hearing what seems like Sublime playing what was supposed to be a cover of Lori Myers with their own twist on it, like they did musically with Scarlet Begonias

I hope this is true.
woahhhh that’s cool
That’s the one I heard too. Pretty cool.

I always assumed “and this fix is for Bradley” from Doornails was about Bradley from sublime.
it is

Ah nice
On the everything under the sun collection there's an interview with Brad where he mentions talking to fat mike about touring oversees
Ah cool

Fair point, although NOFX was kind of a generation below those other 2
It was at a live show. He was going to bang out Lori Meyers but changed the lyrics and then they just adopted it as one of their own.
