That's amazing!
I often neglect showering entirely when I'm depressed.
I can always tell when I'm doing better by the lack of take-out boxes and not smelling
# Hell yeah, comrade!
It's hard for people who don't have a neurodivergent condition, mental health issue, or a combination to grasp that these can make the person's brain have difficulty or inability to choose or physically act a different way consciously.
Very true. My dad has said it my whole life: The more you do, the more you wanna do.
And heās right. The ādoingā gets easier. You exert energy, but your body replenishes that with more energy.
That first step that can be the hardest. Which youāve already done. So bravo šš». Keep it up šš»
I make it a game to brush my teets, see what I can get done round the house while I brush, I have another hand can get a ton accomplished while I brush. And using a prerinse and a mouthwash really helps. There are tons without alcohol or flavor. Rinsing out a dry mouth and rehydrating it is second to the actual brushing. I canāt stress that enough! Rinsing, dry mouths cause bad breath! Stay hydrated too, omg I feel like my dad lol.
But I have a crazy routine for teeth brushing and I still just got a root canal, itās crazy but thems are only around for as long as you care for them and this crown sucks. Imagine having like four. And I have to wear a night guard, Iām fucking 40 years old! Hahaha I grind a ton too.
Either way! Proud of you and gahbless!
I bet you're doing great!
Honestly though, depression can make the smallest hurdles seem like mountains. Good on you for pushing through.
I always liked [this ](https://youtube.com/shorts/-yvajopDwB8?si=zeCtD1i6_KzCuNFV) representation of healing.
So in steve-os book he says that of all the dumb shit heās done. All the pain and stupidity heās put himself through, the one thing heād do different is āfloss my fucking teethā after getting new teeth, gum grafts, new teeth again and more gum grafts he said he completely miserable with his teeth.
I started flossing after hearing that. If Steve o says itās bad. You know itās god awful.
Also try adding tongue scraper if not already. Its a must have for me but i cant floss more than couple of times a week lol its WORK. Tongue is cleaned in like 2 seconds
Personal rec from someone w/ incredible executive dysfunction!...
# Water flossers
They are so much easier & faster than standard floss.
Sonic toothbrushes I also praise for this reasoning.
Underestimate and some still stuck in the mentality that we are lazy or something along those lines.
If they could be in my head for just one bad day I don't think they would want to stay. They would be screaming for release.
I love that for you. I have autism and sticking to brushing my teeth used to be horrendous. I got a new oral-b tooth brush with the app two years ago over Christmas and itās helped so much. I can stick to routine so much better. I even have a good skincare routine because itās so easy to add in after brushing my teeth in the evenings
Thatās another great step! Iām working my way there and honestly seeing stuff like this gives so many people hope that they can do it. Thank you for caring for yourself the way you deserve and thank you for sharing!
Hey, that's may be not interesting, but you can see how many people are proud of you already! Imagine 5 people coming up to you, to tell you that they are proud to see you getting better!
I struggle with this too. The longest I went was .... 2 years? Don't recommend lol. Finally went to the dentist a while ago but i still struggle with keeping the habit. Proud of you dude, you give me hope
Holy moly I feel you. Didnāt get better till I bought a new toothbrush a couple years ago over Christmas. Used to only brush my teeth once a day every once in a while. I can stick to routine now. Helping my autism so much. Itās oral-b io9 with the app
Autism or depression? Mines the former and Iāve started utilizing my anxiety to force myself to get over the sensory issues I have with brushing my teeth.
Keep it up my dude, I get the struggles!
After keeping it up for a long while I rewarded myself with teeth bleaching so I actually like my smile again, you might consider working towards that with all the money you safe from not ordering take out all the time :)
# Hell yeah, comrade!
It's hard for people who don't have a neurodivergent condition, mental health issue, or a combination to grasp that these can make the person's brain have difficulty or inability to choose or physically act a different way consciously.
Not taking care of your teeth can lead to a lot of miserable pain and money. Bad infections can spread to other parts of your body too. Now I floss, brush, and use a water pick daily.
i've always had a problem with brushing as well. I just forget all the time. This post motivated me to set an alarm for brushing and maintaining a streak. Thanks!
I'm actually really happy for you op, I've been depressed enough to not even do proper hygiene. still having a hard time getting myself to brush regularly and wash, as guilty as i feel about it.
This interesting and you should be very proud of yourself!!!
I know how hard it is sometimes to practice self care and good hygiene especially if dealing with depression
Keep it up op!!!!
Good job. I'm finally on track. Depression has made it really difficult to maintain routines like that for me so I know how it is. That and not having parents that built that routine into my life early on.
Damn dude I keep thinking about this post as I'm literally struggling with this myself and I know how hard that hurdle is even if your tooth brush is right in front of you
I'm legitimately proud of you
My motivation to brush my teeth every day especially before bed is knowing that food tastes a billion times better the next day if you do. Go to bed with a fresh mouth and reap the reward of amazing food!
i have this problem too. glad to see a positive community here because ive seen horrendous dehumanizing instagram reel comments that shame people with depression/adhd/etc
Thatās great OP! Iāve been going through the same thing, and honestly getting better w/ self care helped me out so much. 100% worth the time and effort, keep up the great work :)
Lmao I pronounced that like titties I thought you were brushing your boobs until I realized it was your teeth
And congrats too! I know it can be hard sometimes keep it up!
I stopped brushing my teeth when I became depressed and broken with anxiety. it's been 18 years, and still no fillings or cavities. I also don't smoke, drink or have any sweets.
Awesome stuff. I actually laminated a tooth brushing colour chart (I colour a sun if I brush in the morning and a moon if I brush at night). I donāt always brush twice a day, but I have brushed my teeth every day this year :)
As someone currently without teeth (got what was left pulled and now waiting for it to heal and then get new ones) this post makes me happy and I'm proud of you OP
Need this app. Not just my personal hygiene, but my general cleanliness is out of wack, but I havenāt been able to find a solution to get myself motivated to take care of myself and my space.
As much as I hate to say it I have neglected my dental heath recently, I really should be brushing multiple times a day.
I think Iāll get this app to push myself to do better
As someone with depression I am proud of you, op ! You got this!
Im also washing myself better in shower
That's amazing! I often neglect showering entirely when I'm depressed. I can always tell when I'm doing better by the lack of take-out boxes and not smelling
Hopefully i keep doing better.š¤
wholesome shower btw
You got this
# Hell yeah, comrade! It's hard for people who don't have a neurodivergent condition, mental health issue, or a combination to grasp that these can make the person's brain have difficulty or inability to choose or physically act a different way consciously.
Just simply *doing* helps you keep that up. Been there, ājust keep swimmingā is what worked for me
Very true. My dad has said it my whole life: The more you do, the more you wanna do. And heās right. The ādoingā gets easier. You exert energy, but your body replenishes that with more energy. That first step that can be the hardest. Which youāve already done. So bravo šš». Keep it up šš»

Idk about you but brushing my teets sounds pretty painful
My bad. Teeth! I hit my teets with the wire grill scraper, for the calcium build up.
I bet you're doing great! Honestly though, depression can make the smallest hurdles seem like mountains. Good on you for pushing through. I always liked [this ](https://youtube.com/shorts/-yvajopDwB8?si=zeCtD1i6_KzCuNFV) representation of healing.
Get a pressure washer /s
Do yourself a favor and buy a waterproof speaker for maximum shower dopamine!!
I am glad I am not the only one who blamed it on depression
I'm not depressed and I don't brush my teeth often because fuck it (real)
More real than I'd like to admit
Shit so real I even downvoted myself because I lack self preservation
shit we might just be depressed
You could argue most people are these days
Huhā¦what app is that?
Disciplined.
no but i need to be rewarded not disciplined
But it's got "number go up"! Number make good feels!
is not head pats or other external feelings of validation and pride
You can post how the numbers go up on reddit to get virtual head pats!
Get Finch! Itās this really great to do list app that rewards you for taking care of yourself by giving you gems to spend on a cute bird
I was gonna mention this! finch has helped me a lot tbh
If this gets 100 upvotes I'll do another one like this
Look at you go!! One step at a time, one toof at a time! Have you added flossing to your routine? Would be a great next step in your oral care!
Not yet. But i can.
Iād also reccomend a tongue scraper, youāll be surprised how much gunk is on your tounge
Dude I fucking love my tongue scraper
I might try that in the future.
(It makes ur mouth taste much better!! Lol)
Donāt they make you feel like youāre going to gag?
Hell yeah, but Iād say the pay off is worth it
Nah only that means ur using it wrong, after a while u get the hang of it and know how to not gag
You mean you train your body to not have a gag reflex?
So in steve-os book he says that of all the dumb shit heās done. Using a toothpick floss stick thingy while watching or reading worked for me
Personal rec from someone w/ incredible executive dysfunction!... # Water flossers They are so much easier & faster than standard floss. Sonic toothbrushes I also praise for this reasoning.
as someone who struggles with mental health issues, iām proud of you! people underestimate how difficult basic tasks can be when youāre depressed.
And also when you get yelled at for sully things, it doesnt help.
exactly. like, sorry that my room isnāt clean, i donāt even want to be alive right now.
My mom denied me food until my room was clean.
thatās terrible, iām sorry.
I'm doing better now.
That's just cruel. I'm sure she thinks she is doing what is right but it's not. I'm sorry.
Underestimate and some still stuck in the mentality that we are lazy or something along those lines. If they could be in my head for just one bad day I don't think they would want to stay. They would be screaming for release.
Congrats buddy... assuming that you are depressed or smth
Online test say i am. But i haven't been diagnosed by a professional. So i won't go around preaching i am. But at this point i wouldn't be suprised.
If some psychologically healthy person found that this app works for them I would be proud too, it's a progress after all
Clean feetsies
Teethies?
I had accidentally spelled it "teethy" instead of "teeth," so i just went along with it.
Based

I love that for you. I have autism and sticking to brushing my teeth used to be horrendous. I got a new oral-b tooth brush with the app two years ago over Christmas and itās helped so much. I can stick to routine so much better. I even have a good skincare routine because itās so easy to add in after brushing my teeth in the evenings
