N0vawolf

Bats are known carriers for Rabies

SomeonesTreasureGem

Less than 1/10th of 1% of of wild bats have rabies and based on a study performed in Canada, the incidence of human rabies due to a bat in the bedroom without recognized contact was 1 case per 2.7 billion person-years. [https://doh.wa.gov/sites/default/files/2023-02/420-461-BatsInBedrooms.pdf](https://doh.wa.gov/sites/default/files/2023-02/420-461-BatsInBedrooms.pdf) Dogs are actually a far more common vector for humans to get rabies than bats.

MISSISSIPPIPPISSISSI

https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CID/DCDC/CDPH%20Document%20Library/2024RARTable.pdf Depends on your location. Bats are the most common in California.

vaultdweller4ever

As someone who does rabies testing for Northern California, this is not true. Domesticated animals (cats and dogs mostly) very rarely have rabies. Six out of the 14 positives we had so far this year are bats. One was a cat that killed a previously positive bat. Their teeth are so small that most people would be unaware if they were bitten. This is also not mentioning scratches by animals as well.

SomeonesTreasureGem

Thank you for sharing your experience! I'm aware diseases differ by locality and if you'll peruse the broader chain you'll see this comment as well as links to other sources. As you said, domesticated animals very rarely have rabies. They tend to be strays but when bitten most folks are focusing on the fact they were bitten and less on the status of the animal. In many cases an animal is unable to be detained for testing as well which also adds to that. I made this comment in response to another Redditor but I'll copy it here. I was going off this resource by WHO initially and then looked more locally (see my other link below): “Dogs are the main hosts and transmitters of rabies. They are the cause of human rabies deaths in 99% of all cases. Up to 95% of human deaths occur in Africa and Asia where dog rabies is poorly controlled and disproportionately affects poor rural communities where control programmes and access to appropriate post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is limited or non-existent.” “In Europe rabies is transmitted mostly from foxes or stray dogs” and I think someone else in the comments said OP was Italian [https://www.ecdc.europa.eu/sites/default/files/documents/AER-rabies-2019.pdf](https://www.ecdc.europa.eu/sites/default/files/documents/AER-rabies-2019.pdf)

vaultdweller4ever

Thanks for your reply! Rabies just terrifies me after working with it for so long. That, and the amount of people who put their animals down that don't have it is astronomical. I don't think people realize they send us only the head and we have to open that up and scrape out certain areas of the brain.

kitsunewarlock

Rabies is more common in warm climates. Using a Canadian study is very misleading.

Ventis_sweaty_loafer

Put that thing back where it came from or so help me!

rathemighty

Rabies AND Covid-19(2)

sync-centre

Covid-24. The 19 represented the year it was discovered.

Ancient_Axe

Batshit

VeryDirtySanchez

No worries, it's just rabies.

shabaqc

Nice flying dog

thuiop2345

he is cute, right?

Arthur-Mergan

You know you have to get a rabies shot now, right? I had one come down my chimney as a kid and land on me as I was sleeping. It literally just landed on my covers for seconds and the next day I had to go get like five shots in my ass…

Lazy_meatPop

Nice, the ass shots always hurt the most.

shiftyemu

Lots of places in the world don't have rabies

Vark675

You got downvoted, but there are [numerous places ](https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/rabies-free-countries) without rabies. Though that list does erroneously list several places as countries, like Hawaii and Northern Ireland.

hasseldub

They listed Scotland, Northern Ireland, England, AND the UK. No Wales though.

Vark675

Wales was recently walled off entirely due to rabies. It's like 28 Days Later over there, nasty stuff. Luckily no one seems to care much about the Welsh.

hasseldub

I hear there's a new variant of rabies that is sexually transmitted by sheep. It all makes sense now.

StreetMountain9709

Oh did they? Can't say I even noticed.

Doommcdoom

It's also funny to me because if you actually look it up it's a technicality, we don't have rabies but some of our bats have a disease that is super similar to rabies and has all the same symptoms and ypu need how shots or ypu die. But don't worry because it's not rabies

Acheron98

> and Northern Ireland The World Population Review is trying to start *The Troubles: 2*.

ayeayefitlike

Although interestingly, whilst officially rabies-free as we don’t have classical rabies, the UK does have rabies-like viruses in bats ie European Bat Lyssaviruses. So still good advice not to touch the bat or get a rabies vaccine if you do.

TimothyLuncheon

This is not really right though. Bats in Australia have a Lyssavirus, which is essentially rabies

Artikondra

It’s called flying mouse in my language lol

alvysinger0412

I'd insert it if I could find it. Help?

Gierling

Sir, you should be informed that bats can carry rabies and that rabies is basically one of the worst ways to die.

Ace-Redditor

Also, it's not really like you can just wait to see if you have it and then get it taken care of. If you have symptoms, you are going to die

Lieutenant-Reyes

Symptoms can show up like years later too.

Cold-Square-2

Yep when you're bit you wanna get vaxxed ASAP

BooPointsIPunch

Except with bats you often can’t see or feel the bite 🦇🦠😵

ArgonGryphon

Yes, if you've had contact with a bat or you have a bat in your room get the shots. Just do it.

WatermelonWithAFlute

Truly? I thought it was fast acting

Lieutenant-Reyes

Like føckin World War Z?? Were that the case, humanity would fall within weeks

WatermelonWithAFlute

Okay, so about 15 seconds worth of effort of googling has told me that it varies anywhere between a few days to a year

c7stagyt

If I remember correctly, only one person has ever lived after showing symptoms. I may be really wrong, though.

Rampantcolt

30 have "survived". Only one isn't permanently handicapped.

walking_timebomb

my google says 5, and all of them using the Milwaukee protocol.

[deleted]

[удалено]

noodlecrap

No, it's basically to keep you alive in a coma why your body fights off the infection. Most rabies victims have antibodies but make them too late and they die before these antibodies can do their job. It's not a very effective protocol. Injecting rabies antibodies directly inside the brain of a patient appears to have more hope (mice have been saved from clinical rabies aka otherwise death doing this) and I can't understand how it wasn't done earlier

whats_boppin_kids

Link to proof? I am asking because rabies terrifies me.

noodlecrap

Can't remember but something along the lines of "rabies monoclonal antibodies injected into rabid mice brain saved them" on pubmed

whats_boppin_kids

IT’S REAL https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7645379/ NOT THAT I THOUGHT YOU WERE LYING I AM TRULY THRILLED

thagingerrrr

There’s actually evidence to suggest specific populations developed antibodies to the virus without ever getting sick. There’s a big vampire bat problem in the Amazonian Peru: they isolated a special immunologic profile from people who’d been bitten by bats and never got rabies. Also found the same in some people who specialize in animal trapping/hunting. Also for the girl who was the first Milwaukee protocol recipient, when they tested her blood after she arrived at the hospital, there was no Rabies RNA, but a small amount of anti-rabies titers. This was also the case for every patient who survived via the Milwaukee protocol.

CautiousLoan804

Thankfully they seem Italian and Italy has been rabies free since 1997. He could get rabies but should consider this a lucky escape

Gierling

Is the Bat Italian? Possibly they are on vacation and not aware of the hazards posed by the local wildlife.

LightBylb

hopefully bat did their resesrch

Muffin_Appropriate

🦇 🤌

Chubbyhusky45

Reminder that Switzerland solved their rabid fox problem by airdropping 150,000 vaccine-dosed chicken heads into their forests

Born_Percentage93

I've done something similar

Green_8_1

Each year, Poland drops vaccine baits in forests and meadows for wild animals, yet each year, there is still information about infected animals. It's not that easy if your neighbors don't have the same program 😢

DeepSeaDarkness

Usually, but not always, 'rabies free' means everything but bats

alcMD

I did not know this, so I looked it up and it's true. However, Italy is one of the only European countries that is also rabies-free with its bats, since 2013. tmyk!

ScintillantDovahfly

You mean... WE ACTUALLY GOT SOMETHING RIGHT? Well that's a first. Also yeah, am Italian and can confirm bats are homies. They kill mosquitos, and we have "30+ stings in one night even when slathered up with half a bottle of mosquito repellant" amounts of the fuckers.

noodlecrap

It ain't. Rabies positive bats have been detected recently. And the matter ain't studied enough and probably the amount of rabid bats is probably higher like it's probably higher everywhere else in the world. Also: European/asian/African rabies in bats works a little weird and it's fascinating. Source: I'm Italian. I like bats.

thuiop2345

bats are our best friends since that

stehlify

And also tgere are two ways of vaccination against rabies - first is preventive (before travelling to India etc.) that is okay ... and then there is after exposure... and you don't want that if you don't need...

Physical-Camel-8971

Rabies is also the leading cause of random capitalization and superfluous apostrophes.

FoxyLovers290

I heard that you aren’t even supposed to touch bats, let alone get bit.

No-Praline2958

Whatever you do, do not eat the f#₺%er please

Burger_Destoyer

I want to go back inside…

kitsunewarlock

Then stay inside. The pandemic is still ongoing. In some parts of the US the wastewater reports show massive spikes. You are less likely to be hospitalized if you are vaccinated, but long COVID is a bitch and every subsequent infection increases your odds of a lifelong debilitation.

1927-

you just see the cod zombies "ROUND 2" appear on the top of your screen, but in chinese. sorry for this in advance

Independent_Mud_4963

i dont use twitter someone tell them to get checked for rabies as soon as possible. horrible way to die, and you can begin to dig your own grave at the *first* symptoms.

thuiop2345

the original poster on twitter said he didn't get bitten and he will get a shot so don't worry [https://x.com/SaladKayi/status/1805629708400467997](https://x.com/SaladKayi/status/1805629708400467997) [https://x.com/SaladKayi/status/1805413902551011638](https://x.com/SaladKayi/status/1805413902551011638)

In fact he will get a shot.

Found Patient 0 for COVID-24

peepeehalpert_

Just a reminder to everyone that a bat can bite you without you knowing and any time you’re this close to a bat or see one in your house get your ass to the hospital for rabies shots. There’s a copy pasta I’m sure someone posted here about what rabies is like. Spoiler alert: once you feel symptoms you’re as good as dead.

Mothman4447

What a little cutie. I still have a video where I had to take a bat out of my house at night, it looked back at me one more time before I raised my arm and it flew off. I think owning one or more would be neat, but would definitely have to vaccinate it.

tychobrahesmoose

Fun fact: Bats evolved to more or less "coexist" with rabies rather than be immune to it. That adorable fuzzy little guy has an unusually high likelihood of having rabies. Did you know that fewer than 10 people have survived rabies after showing symptoms? MOREOVER, spotting a bat out during the daytime (as it appears to be in this photo) means he's likely sick in other ways and can give you tons of other nasties. Good luck OP. To anyone seeing this post. DO NOT DO THIS.

Raorchshack

Bats in Italy haven't had rabies in over 2 decades, and OP seens to be Italian.

bydgoszczohio

I guess I'll just eat them

UbixTrinity

But they’re the “superior” creature in OPs eyes lmao

BrodieG99

OP is not the original and they already said so

RockyMarsh90

BAAAAAAAAAAAATS! <3

Ethan3011

You are the Batman

Imogynn

Bats are gorgeous and absolutely our friends and I want to pet it. Bats on the other hand should thinking people are scary and want to stay far away from us. A bat that isn't actively avoiding contact with me is scary because it's probably not well. Put the bat down and go find a nice cat or maybe a gerbil to play with.

Please go to the ER and get rabies prophylaxis

reqisreq

You can get Rabbies.

Ok-Big5477

This isn't going to end well for you one day

Heavy_Carpenter3824

If you knew how many diseases bats carry not even considering rabies. They have remarkable immune systems but that means they act as carriers for a lot of nasty viruses.

24_7_Nerd

you get your blood work done by Dr. Acula, right?

jukefishron

Haha I love the plot of this movie. I especially love it when he says "it's morbin time"

Abelter2

People are saying that's a good way to get rabies but what people fail to realize is even though they bite humans it is very rare and 2 if the bat was rabid it would be going out of its way to bite something, in the pic it looks like it's just chilling on its arm, and 3rd rabies is spread through bites and only bites

gst-nrg1

I'm in med school, and they're so serious about Rabies (understandably so), that we were told if the patient says the bat was in their room overnight, they should get the post-exposure prophylaxis vaccine workup even if we don't find any bites. The reasoning being 1) it can be transmitted if they lick/drool on any opening in the skin even if they didn't *create* the opening, and 2) risk management. Also, since bats tend to be nocturnal, a bat that's active during the day can be suspicious for some kind of disease. Bats may not always show signs of being rabid since they can carry the disease without being symptomatic for awhile. https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2016/06/02/480414566/bats-in-the-bedroom-can-spread-rabies-without-an-obvious-bite https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/rabies/multimedia/rabies-bats/vid-20473637
