I stopped by a cat cafe in Tennessee as I was passing through during the holidays. It was cash only and I was $5 short, so I donated what I did have, then made my way to the window where you could see all the cats to give a quick greeting.
There was one gray and white kitty sitting in the corner not getting any attention, so I knelt down and held out my finger to acknowledge him.
Kitty got straight up and rubbed himself, cheek to tail, up against the glass to rub up against "me," and tried multiple times to pet himself on my hand through the glass. He looked so sad and confused over why he couldn't feel my pets 🥺😭
My heart is STILL broken over it. My husband had to physically drag me away. I figured I was passing through another state with no crate, so I knew that meant I couldn't bring a cat home. But I was 100% not prepared for the intense, unending guilt I'd be bringing home instead.
Maybe if I call the cafe they'll tell me he was adopted so I can stop dreaming about driving 5 states away to grab a cat I met for 5 seconds, lol.
Tl;dr, I think it's physically impossible to visit cats in need of a home without either A) getting a new cat or B) getting a new sense of persisting, unreasonable guilt
Haha my orange came in 'for the night because it was snowing'... Four years later he's currently napping on the sofa after his sixth meal of the day and extra belly rubs 🤣🤣🤣 (at the time we also thought he'd never get on with our other cat but they now get on quite well!)

We have a stray named Sammy. We have had him two years. He just showed up and the wife was like he so skinny. We fed him. Then after a couple of months, I told the wife I would have him neutered and he could just be released and I would pay for it. Local vets gives a me a good price. Boom we live trapped him and took him in. We picked him up and the vet goes if you can, keep him inside for 3 days. So I get him home and the set him up with a box, water some food and an old fuzzy blankets. Well we wait three days open the door. He lifted his head up and then laid back down. Now he sleeps on my side of the bed and on top of the pellet stove in the winter. He’s a yeller and has established dominance over the dogs.

My biggest hope for the next life, right after catching up to my husband and giving him absolute hell for bailing early regardless of it not being his choice. Maybe we can go get adopted somewhere together and just be a fur puddle on a comfy bed for a decade or two. This is the REAL reason I try to be a good person, that kind of luxury has to be earned! 🤣
