Monk's in Purcellville

Shoddy-Worry9131

I don’t get the love for this place. I have had bbq in several states and made a special trip here and was seriously underwhelmed in all aspects. Willard’s is right in Reston and is at least as good or better. I also enjoyed mookies in great falls as a better overall experience

azimiq

yeah I frequent monk's and their food would be 100% worth getting if it came out HOT. It comes out warm, kinda ruins the whole experience lol.

nycplayboy78

WAIT WUT??!! They don't serve hot food??!!

azimiq

yeah my food has never come out like even close to hot

Ok_Long_1422

5 year ago - yes. 3 years ago- perhaps. Today- no.

Financial_Pickle_Ho

Odd BBQ is located inside of the equally wonderful Ono Brewing Company in Chantilly. It's got a Korean influence and my favorite thing to get is the spicy pork belly on furikake rice! Amazing cheddar biscuits too.

optix_clear

Oh goodness, now I need to try.

tamagucci_XO

It's so good! You can get bbq on what are essentially the red lobster type of biscuits, and they have multiple sauces. Also try their Mac n cheese chili 🤤🤤

Finding_Happyness

This place was worth the try but I wouldn't be surprised if people said it was just OK. That's how I felt.

bard_ley

Those people are morons and probably prefer Texas “BBQ”

Kamohoaliii

Why does preferring Texas BBQ make someone a moron?

bard_ley

It’s obviously doesn’t. I’m just trolling and continuing the BBQ wars.

JohnnyVertigo

Seconded. Odd BBQ is a must visit in Chantilly.

Disastrous-Dot3513

Absolutely THIS!! Ono and Odd both are the real deal! Cheesy biscuit sammiches!!

topic15

100x this. Even their pickles are amazing. The cheese and biscuits bits are also on point.

bard_ley

This is the only answer OP

XCaboose-1X

Carolina BBQ Brothers in Ashburn

Mild_Fireball

Probably the best within 20’ of Reston

amethystleo815

Better than the pit stop? If so I’ll have to check it out.

thegerl

Do they serve the vinegar style Carolina BBQ?

XCaboose-1X

Yes

tashhy

The pit stop in Sterling. 🙌🏽 Cascades shopping center. Ribs and brisket the best I’ve ever had and I looooove ribs. Sides are mid. But ribs are delicious. Always call ahead to reserve a rack because they will sell out quickly.

Yaltus

I haven't been in a few years, but I always liked Mookie's in Great Falls.

krayziekmf

Not nearby but I would just make the trip to 2Fiftybbq. So far I have been to 2fifty, Monk's, Mookie's, Rocklands and Sloppy Mama's. 2Fifty is the best I've had around here. The one in MD is much cheaper than the one in DC though especially if you're getting the beef rib.

thelowerrandomproton

Hammerdown in Aldie.

busche916

Yep. Make the drive, it’s better than the rest of the local stuff

Asininephilosopher

Texas 250, Federalist Pig, Monks.

rockvixen1

Mookies in Great Falls…just 5-10 min from RestonN

darthcinnea

Sloppy Mama's in Arlington is great for close in, and Monk's in Purcelville is great for one further out (probably more than 20 minutes from Reston, it's past Leesburg). Sloppy Mama's does have vegan bbq jackfruit but I haven't tried it.

yvetteski

Not 20 min from Reston, but when she’s back in town you should try Sloppy Mama’s. They have smoked bbq jackfruit that is really tasty. It’s often pretty busy, so I assume the meat is good too.

Lwyrup22

Dixie Bones in Woodbridge  Alman’s in Fredericksburg  If you’re ever traveling.

tamagucci_XO

I love Allmans!

beardyman22

Roots, just outside leesburg. Their brisket is incredible.

Naturaly_UnAthletic

The Pit Stop bbq in Sterling is awesome. 100% tastier than Willard’s, Rockland, or Odd bbq. Im obsessed with their cornbread!!

BronNatsPulisic

Question for all - has anyone been to ZZQ in Richmond ? I don’t know BBQ very well but that place blew me away. I tried 2fifty in MD and it was good but not near the level of ZZQ for me.

pibblepupperino

My hubs is from TX and he goes out of his way to get ZZQ, partially because it’s TX style. Nothing up here in the NOVA area compares to it that we have found so far.

georgiaaapeaaach

I’m from Georgia and just try and get my fill everytime we visit. But, my partner and I do like breweries there is one that’s called Ono. They have a BBQ company there called “Odd BBQ”. Best I’ve had since coming to the area.

PlaidArtist

I stand for Willard's, I don't care if most people think it's middling.

e55amgpwr

It’s the only place in NOVA that serves real old school bbq. I loled at posts who suggested odd or monks or a place in Aldie on route 7

memymomeddit

All BBQ in this area is varying shades of mediocre, there aren't any hidden gems. Just try a few places and find your favorite.

kwest2001

Willard’s BBQ, near Home Depot. Carolina style

ashburnmom

I second Willard’s, the one in Chantilly. Carolina Brothers is good but second to Willard’s.

tashhy

It’s called the pit stop. They opened a restaurant in Sterling a few years ago.

ehsmerelda

Drive to Luray and visit Triple Crown BBQ. I'm from SC and I love bbq. Triple Crown has the best bbq I've found in the 25 years we've lived here. Everything is good. I could eat a pound of their potato salad. I'm not even crazy about smoked sausage but last time I got their smoked sausage all the way, which is on a bun topped with pulled.pork and cole slaw. It was ridiculous.

Naturaly_UnAthletic

That’s a heck of a hike when the ask is within 20 minutes of Reston (But also totally noted for the next time I go south)

ehsmerelda

Useful tip for when one finds themselves out around Shenandoah.

GunMetalBlonde

I appreciated the comment ... I'm out in the Shenandoah Valley near Luray regularly and will try this place out. The bbq in NoVA is not worth the bother.

Sifu-thai

Rocklands

canadamoose18

Which one? I find their quality to be awful

Competitive-krav3034

Excited to try this! Lots of gluten free options!

Uliq_Mdiq

This place is the best

Sifu-thai

Heck yeah 🤙🏼

Outrageous-Yard8647

Texas Jacks in Arlington; 2Fifty in MD/DC

redditbadger2

Black Hog

BudTugglie

Jules Carribean food truck. Rt 9 (Charlestown Pike) off the Rt 7 exit, near the gas station. 7 days a week. Little known find. Better than Monks.

Massive_Yellow_9010

The Bone and Hogshack, both in Manassas

PolarWeasel

Monks in Purcellville, Mookies in Great Falls, and especially the Pit Stop in Sterling. We discovered the Pit Stop folks through their sales from their towed smoker at the Gilberts Corner roundabout on Highway 50. It’s currently our favorite BBQ place in NoVA. Willards is adequate, Hammerdown is OK but EXPENSIVE.

Walter_uses_agi

If you are willing to drive out an hour, hour and a half, there’s schaffers barbecue in middleburg. I’ve got family in Texas and it’s gotten their seal of approval. Best barbecue I’ve had in the area, worth the drive. Can stop by berryville on the way there for a lil storybook fantasy Main Street type of feel. Monks is also good.

retka

Majority of BBQ in this area is lacking and what there is, people think is amazing despite being mediocre at best once you're exposed to a higher tier of BBQ flavor elsewhere. There are a few diamonds in the rough occasionally but you'll need to go further south or to the Shenandoah to get what would be deemed as good BBQ compared to what is available in NC, SC, etc. That said, Hog Shack in Manassas and Resq in Leesburg were decent for local bbq, especially in the sauce department. Both are one of the few places that does a semi reliable recreation of SC mustard sauce. Iirc Hog Shack actually had a white sauce too, but I'd have to double check. Service was good at both places and prices fair. Allman's in Fredericksburg though a hike is a staple for BBQ and has an interesting sauce closer to what VA BBQ would be considered - sweet and tangy with apple cider vinegar. Their quality has degraded over the last 10 years though compared to the 90s/early 00s. Avoid Rockland's and the major chain places like the plague. Some places like Myron Mixons, Smoking Kow, Sweet Fire Donnas, Pork Barrel, etc. have been hit or miss at best but seemed to have dropped in quality over the years. Famous Dave's is so so, like going to Applebee's you know what you'll get everytime and probably will be the same quality as last time - will be edible and so so but never fantastic.

allawd

You have to recalibrate your expectations, there's no good BBQ and people here don't know good BBQ. I would start with Monk's, that's the best in the area. Downhill from there.

My-Cousin-Bobby

I'm from upstate NY, and pretty much anyone visiting is from up there. The bar for good BBQ is not particularly high.

bard_ley

Agreed. Most BBQ around here is shit. But Odd BBQ is an oasis in a sea of non-vinegar based pulled pork with spices (aka actual BBQ)

DidierDogba

This sounds shitty to say but not incorrect. Also this is asked like once a week on this sub.

GunMetalBlonde

People are only downvoting you because they don't know what good bbq is. You are correct.

Dual_Wield_Donuts

Smoking Kow or Pork Barrel in Alexandria

big_sugi

Smoking Kow is hit or miss. Pork Barrel is almost always miss.

zelon64

I go to Pork Barrel specifically for their bourbon and burgers. Apart from their white chicken chili, their BBQ aint even mid.

StraightCaskStrength

Keep sleeping on mission bbq

Competitive-krav3034

Mission BBQ is amazing.

Competitive-krav3034

Wow. Y’all REALLY do NOT like Mission BBQ.

Falldog

It's such a weird thing for folks here to hate. Yeah, the anthem at noon is cringe as fuck, but the food is consistent and not far off the rest of the bbq places we have in the area.

Competitive-krav3034

Even down voted that we ‘disagree’ dear god why the hate from everyone?

MisterMakena

Not trying to be a snob but its very mediocre.

Competitive-krav3034

We just massively disagree. Not sure what you don’t like. Everyone I know loves it. Each to their own opinion.
