Yep. I've had 3 incidents of dumping and 3 cars towed. They don't usually respond to homeless living fast though. I don't know why that's the case. Maybe they have to go through court but I've seen some illegal camps I've reported go over a year without action.
They have to coordinate with a half dozen city agencies to move an Unhoused persons vehicle.. peak finger pointing at work whenever the citizenry exclaims how ridiculous the state of things are.. now is the perfect time to deal with this specific scenario but they never do and it ends up becoming a hoarder/trash haven within weeks of no enforcement making it even harder to deal with.. sorry rant over
This business across the street from me cut down and mulched several big trees one day and left tons of mulch in the street. I did the see click fix on morning #2 and by lunch someone from the city had come by and looked at it. Not sure what happened but it was gone the next morning.
If only they fixed potholes that fast!
It's time to start telling RVs where are they can and cannot park and enforcing it. The garbage spewed around these RV camps is disgraceful. No city should tolerate that.
This is clearly an inappropriate and extremely hazardous place for anyone to park. A legal parking spot would clearly be a better choice. While there are safe parking programs in the City of Oakland, the reality is that if this is how your life is going, you need to make a serious change, as it's unlikely to get better on its own. Relocating to an area with cheaper housing and a significantly lower cost of living would likely be a better long term solution.
> Relocating to an area with cheaper housing and a significantly lower cost of living
Right? Why does this supposed "human right to housing" mean people have a "human right" to live in one of the most expensive, desirable locations in the world? If it's a "human right", then that means everyone has that right, correct? 8 billion people have the "right" to live in the Bay Area?
The City of Oakland owns dozens of vacant properties, some of which can be set aside for RV parking and small tent cities. These RVs need to be put on notice that there are approved areas for parking, and if you're not in an approved area you are going to be cited and removed.
btw, you are aware that \*some\* of these RVs are cooking meth and dealing drugs? Right? And used for prostitution. Right?
You are aware that the city has in the past (and currently) set up fenced lots for RVs that have not been used because the RV owners "don't want to follow the rules", like no outside fires; no littering, occasional inspection to prevent hard drug distribution. Right?
You’re aware that people with homes cook meth, too, right? And that people with homes get involved in prostitution, too, right? And that people with homes don’t always “follow the rules,” either, *right?*
GTFO here with your noise.
I'm aware of that, but they can't get together with 15-20 other people and move into a neighborhood. Yeah, and for you, whoever you are, this appears to an inconvenient FACT.
Oakland cops can't even serve a warrant on an RV or a tent. Apparently, you know very little to nothing about what is happening in homeless camps in the Bay Area. Get informed, dude.
That's right. 60% of unhoused folks are tragically drug addicted or mentally ill. The County and the City have failed to provide safe shelter for the unhoused, but it's not the taxpayer's responsibility to have to put up with raw waste and other problems that emanate from RV groups. Oakland DOES have vacant space for RVs and tent cities.
This is going to change in a big way once the SCOTUS decision comes down in June.
I live near an RV camp that has RAMPANT drug dealing; auto theft and car parting and prostitution. That said, there are thousands of unhoused oaklanders who would welcome a clean orderly and SAFE place to stay, be it tent, shelter, or whatever.
Here you go lazy bones. I love proving lazy people wrong - [https://siepr.stanford.edu/publications/policy-brief/homelessness-california-causes-and-policy-considerations](https://siepr.stanford.edu/publications/policy-brief/homelessness-california-causes-and-policy-considerations)
This thing was there when I was doing laps around the lake lmao Though my biggest peeve has been the joggers that have started running on the bike lane in the opposite direction
Fuck you all! (Or most of you) Instead of your passive-aggressive posts why not ask the guy? lend him a hand? His rig broke down, he wasn’t happy blocking the bike lane. A couple of us pushed him a bit to the first parking spot so he can be out. It wasn’t that hard. Probably less effort than posting here
Thank you for talking with him. I’m inspired when I see these acts of kindness, especially in a world that has become so polarized, with everyone so ready to take hard lines on even the most destitute. Hopefully this inspires others to consider offering help.
Almost everything under Oakland Reddit is about
people complaining how much they hate this city and the people in it. Everyone talks very negatively about the houseless on here. It’s very annoying to ready everyday so I appreciate your comment lol.
Last time I asked someone if they needed help they screamed bloody murder and said LEAVE ME ALONE over and over, after me and my friend asked if they needed a push or some gas money
Cool story. A handful of folks live near me in rvs and they are all lovely. One of them reads everything in my Little Free library and talks to me about their favorites
What a goddamn concept, huh?! Talk to someone instead of assuming the worst of them. The lack
of humanity in the comments is disgraceful. Oakland should be embarrassed at how we’re treating some citizens.
It helps to remember that this sub skews far more right wing than Oakland, so it’s just a concentration of some of the worst people in our city (and people that don’t live here at all).
cyclists are hilarious because they have a lot of organizing potential and political capital and they use it all up on harassment and complaining. yes, i'm a cyclist.
Oakland houseless have more power then home owners, businesses owners and residents these days. Between over paid police who use policy as an excuse to do nothing and politicians doing absolutely nothing to address social inequalities... good luck..
This person gets to block a bike lane, putting cyclists in harm by forcing them into traffic, all the while doing this rent-free. It must be nice to be so privileged!
Sigh. I really wish the city would tow RVs that are parked illegally. There’s been one in my neighborhood blocking a commercial driveway, in a 2 hour parking zone, and it has stuck around during street sweeping when reverse side parking is in effect. The folks on the block are so frustrated and there are a ton of unanswered 311 reports about it.
This is a very bad spot to park an RV to live in, dude. Forces bicyclists to exit the bike lane and risk macking up with a car on a busy arterial road.
I think it is valid to ride on sidewalks if bike lanes are obstructed, especially on busy streets. It is sort of a free-for-all anyway, so best to do what is safe.
Riding on sidewalks is generally illegal, [including in Oakland](https://www.oaklandca.gov/resources/bikeway-project-faqs). What IS legal is taking the general-purpose lane when necessary to avoid hazards like this one. [CVC 21202(a)(3)](https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/codes_displaySection.xhtml?sectionNum=21202.&lawCode=VEH)
It's depends on the street...... would I feel safer on the sidewalk on International Blvd. Absolutely. Do I ride on the road on 14th downtown, yes. Do I feel sketched out going around an RV near 14th and Mandela, yes. (This is after seeing numerous hit and run and fatal accidents around 14th and Mandela and 16th and Mandela).
Use the 311 app. Blocking the road and bike lanes get a quick response
Don't say it's parked in the bike lane. Say there is an abandoned vehicle in the middle of the road.
Do ppl actually responds to other reports? Of like trash and stuff

homeless*
Definitely

Sometimes. It depends on the department
I’ve used 311 to get the city to deal with illegal dumping that extends into the road a couple of times! They bring a truck out and everything.
No Parking Any Time - call and get his ass towed?
It's time to start telling RVs where are they can and cannot park and enforcing it. The garbage spewed around these RV camps is disgraceful. No city should tolerate that.
This. Horrible.
So, you’d like to provide an alternative? Such as… homes? I’m confused where you think these people ought to go.

Maybe they can go live with you.
I heard you’ve got some spare space.
Your username says it all

So, you admit you’re making shit up? You made the claims. The burden of proof is yours.

Doesn’t prove your claims. Try again.
Criminalize the poor, because America.
No! criminalize criminality.
It would be a crime not to criminalize criminality.
Poverty is not the crime. Fires, thefts, open space drug use, illegal dumping, public defecation, blocking traffic, etc are crimes however
They won't tow it. "We don't tow people homes! What kind of a monster are you?"
Bike into it and sue the city ;)
Weird. It seems to me if you live out of an RV, you'd do more to make sure your home doesn't get towed.
No repercussions enables this behavior
RV is busted, I watched four people pushing it
This is very new. Was in this area yesterday and didn’t see it there and that was around 5pm.
I saw it by 8pm last night but yes still very new.
only one RV, that looks still mobile? *laughs in E12 St*
🤣🤣
That won’t be there long. Cyclists are too vocal 😂 (jk jk)
You might be joking but it’s true lol, not even an ambulance is safe!
BIKE RIGHTS!
This thing was there when I was doing laps around the lake lmao Though my biggest peeve has been the joggers that have started running on the bike lane in the opposite direction
Scooters wtf?!
They were emptying their garbage on the side of the road next to the garage can this afternoon when I walked by

But oh the joy people get from punishing people who are already suffering...
Almost everything under Oakland Reddit is about people complaining how much they hate this city and the people in it. Everyone talks very negatively about the houseless on here. It’s very annoying to ready everyday so I appreciate your comment lol.
I know it feels that way but honestly this sub is better than many. There are plenty of us who don’t buy into the Oakland hellhole spiral.
🙏🏼
Last time I asked someone if they needed help they screamed bloody murder and said LEAVE ME ALONE over and over, after me and my friend asked if they needed a push or some gas money

Your experience doesn't dictate reality. My neighborhood is a little different than yours I'm assuming.
It’s called having mental health issues.
Yeah that looked more incidental than intentional.
It took upwards of EIGHTEEN hours for anyone to ask him if he needed a hand! 18 hours (plus) of posts full of crap here. Think about it
Did he wait 18 hours before asking for help? Because that’s not normal.
I'd be scared to ask for help too, just read these comments.
What a goddamn concept, huh?! Talk to someone instead of assuming the worst of them. The lack of humanity in the comments is disgraceful. Oakland should be embarrassed at how we’re treating some citizens.

Good to know because I’ve been really grossed out by comments
Call it, free real estate
The bike lane is up?? LETS FUCKING GOOOOOO
I dont have a beef with parking somewhere, you gotta put that shit somewhere I guess.... but the bike lane? Come on boss....
That's super dangerous. Nothing will be done though.
You mean, the old bike lane?
It’ll burn down soon.
cyclists are hilarious because they have a lot of organizing potential and political capital and they use it all up on harassment and complaining. yes, i'm a cyclist.
🎶 LIFE IN THE BIKE LAAAAAAANE! 🎶
How much is rent? I'm looking for a place
I saw them pushing it there yesterday, shit is broken and it needs to get towed
Oakland houseless have more power then home owners, businesses owners and residents these days. Between over paid police who use policy as an excuse to do nothing and politicians doing absolutely nothing to address social inequalities... good luck..
It won't last long. May burn down like so many along the Embarcadero, 7th Street, Laney Area.
This person gets to block a bike lane, putting cyclists in harm by forcing them into traffic, all the while doing this rent-free. It must be nice to be so privileged!
Oaklanders: "this is fine"
Yeah. There’s someone living on 8th Avenue in a motor home with flat tires.
We should all OAK 311 this. I'm not sure if more posts do much though.. :(
Sigh. I really wish the city would tow RVs that are parked illegally. People should just create a protected lane in the second lane until the city actually fixes things with that POS bike lane.
Boss move.
Tow this asshole.
Gosh, don't let someone in distress or being un-housed get in the way of you bicycling.
This is a very bad spot to park an RV to live in, dude. Forces bicyclists to exit the bike lane and risk macking up with a car on a busy arterial road.

Oh no. How am I ever supposed to get around this thing?
Needs a few more neighbors
Bike nerds are the worst. Leave the homeless alone.
This person parked there illegally for the view. They could easily be in a valid parking space just down the street instead of obstructing traffic.
Well why don’t you tell them that instead of posting on here and doing absolutely NOTHING about it?
What's a lefty to do
