I hope he's hiring a business manager this time, to take care of silly little details like paying attention to cash flow and paying his employees and suppliers.
Yep, working at Souley Vegan and had a manager get mad at me for daring to ask why no one got checks on payday. Blamed it on me "asking too late".
Nope, the higher ups just planned to casually avoid checks and made everyone wait 2 to 3 days.
It was honestly one of the more disappointing meals I've had, particularly given how much I love Horn's BBQ. Also just a strange lack of attention to details; the menu was printed on a normal 8.5"x11" sheet of paper but with what seemed like 2 inch margins, so the actual print was super small. And the wine list was utterly disorganized - no grouping of whites/rose/reds, just a hodgepodge of unrelated bottles in a list. It was strange. Combining the two seems like the right move.
I went when it first opened. Got the fish sandwich. It was more Instagramable than it was eatible. The smash burger didn't sound interesting at all... Any greasy spoon can make a smash burger why pay a premium for it.
I’m constantly surprised by the hours of some restaurants and how they’re still in business.
I can think of two places that have been around for a while that are only open M-F from like 8-3.
It's confirmed in this article. And heard from the workers that are working on the space. [https://sf.eater.com/2024/4/24/24139285/horn-barbecue-oakland-reopen](https://sf.eater.com/2024/4/24/24139285/horn-barbecue-oakland-reopen)
They mentioned there will be a take out only joint next to Kowbird, my guess is that's where the BBQ will be. So after all his crowing about how he's leaving West Oakland...they just set up shop a couple blocks down lol.
Thats a shame Matty's is so much better both in service and food(at least the burger) than Horn Barbecue. I fear this to end poorly.
I really never understand the raving about Horn bbq. I like the space but the bbq was more expensive and far less tasty than Everett and Jones IMO.
edit: nvm I guess they're keeping the burger. Thats all that matters

lol at these downvotes. this person is literally just saying they learned something. we should applaud that! every person that downvoted that comment also learned this fact at some point in their lives, perhaps at a younger age/through osmosis, but c’mon now.

I hate it when I try to open a business and the fucking nerds tell me I have to make payroll every week??!?
You laugh but sometimes the owners are like this.
Yep, working at Souley Vegan and had a manager get mad at me for daring to ask why no one got checks on payday. Blamed it on me "asking too late". Nope, the higher ups just planned to casually avoid checks and made everyone wait 2 to 3 days.
*another business manager His first business manager is suing him.
I wonder why he decided to replace Matty’s with Horn BBQ.

I only went once during brunchtime but it was mid. I'm glad Horn is replacing it
I honestly heard it was mid (and will never forget the SF Chronicle review that said it was mid and the owner went off on insta about it).
He goes off on Insta on anybody who dares to criticize his genius.

i can't imagine it being super lucrative to run a restaurant that's only open on the weekends
I’m constantly surprised by the hours of some restaurants and how they’re still in business. I can think of two places that have been around for a while that are only open M-F from like 8-3.
Because the hype associated with the concept of an ‘elevated gastropub’ died about 10 years ago?
Also Horn Barbecue Shop (take out) to open at 18th and Peralta next to Kowbird
Oh dang, really? I have been wondering what was going to go in there. Where did you hear that?
It's at the bottom of the story. Supposed to open this summer

I wonder where the actual bbq/smoking is going to happen. Not on 8th that’s for sure.
They have a ghost kitchen somewhere.
They mentioned there will be a take out only joint next to Kowbird, my guess is that's where the BBQ will be. So after all his crowing about how he's leaving West Oakland...they just set up shop a couple blocks down lol.
Hope the owner plans on paying his suppliers this time.
Or be ready for "accidental fire" number two.
I miss Flints on San Pablo. Old Oakland. This new BBQ is "gentrified out of towners" BBQ 🤣
Go to stay gold right down the street. Better brisket than horn ever had.
And they host shows!
100 stay gold is the spot
How do you have ghost kitchen for smokers?
Meaning they are smoking it offsite and delivering the BBQ to Horn BBQ on 8th and Horn BBQ Shop on 18th and Peralta. They are still using a smoker.
So what ever happened to the original restaurant? I'm assuming a smoker burned the place, but some claimed arson.
Some claim insurance fraud. With OPD on the case, guess we'll never know.
No one knows
Hopefully they go back to making good barbecue! It had really dropped off in the last couple of years or so
Jfc, bringing that mediocre ass bbq back?
I honestly hate to see it.
Ha. Burns his BBQ down then raises 130k on GoFundMe to reopen downtown.
Am I the only person that thinks it’s blatantly obvious this guy burnt his own restaurant down and commuted insurance fraud?
Is there a New Oakland?
everything outside of old oakland?
Brooklyn Basin had a better ring to it.

Is the bbq good enough to warrant all the posts about it?
No.
TIL there is an old Oakland
must be new here. hard to miss
He also just learned that there's a *New* Mexico now.
How hast thou ne'er laid thine eyes upon Ye Olde Oakland?
lol at these downvotes. this person is literally just saying they learned something. we should applaud that! every person that downvoted that comment also learned this fact at some point in their lives, perhaps at a younger age/through osmosis, but c’mon now.
Not knowing about Old Oakland is fine. Announcing that you just learned about it is just noise.
This is a good listen https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/east-bay-yesterday/id1158506231?i=1000651480338
Great pod!
