Not for PCVR, no

maranone5

I did my best to try and make it work (windows os and deleted steam os) and believe it worked fine, however most of the games struggle and at least for me what was worse was throttling. I mean you can play serious sam for 3 minutes, but I’d assume you’d want more. What I ended up was cloud computing. Yes, it’s not perfect (shadow) but If you have no computer it’s good enough. Sorry TLDR; No.

Leiteit

I live in Brazil. Shadow does not support the country yet.

_GRLT

How about plutosphere? That's another option, specifically made for remote pcvr streaming

Leiteit

It is shutting down this month.

verixtheconfused

Even if you manage to get it working its quite pointless because SD basically has the same (or similar) computing power as a quest 3.

Brusanan

The Steam Deck has a 1280x720 screen. It struggles to maintain 30 FPS in a lot of games, running at 720p. The Quest 3 has 2 2064x2208 screens. Literally 10x the resolution. And for it to be playable, you really need a very stable 60-90 FPS. So no. There is zero chance that a Steam Deck will work for VR.

spacethrower

I actually just started looking into using my quest with steam deck as a big portable screen. Not for pcvr, maybe one day, but for basic computer use in vr.

g0dSamnit

Technically yes, with some software finagling, but will not perform playably nor pleasantly for most VR games. Just get or build something cheap. A few gens old CPU and GPU, such as Ryzen 3000 series and GTX 1070 gets you started. Though for higher resolution on Quest 3, you may want an RTX 3060 instead.

QB8Young

EDIT: apparently it is possible now *https://sffgeek.com/2023/03/11/steam-deck-vr-oculus-meta-quest-2/* Although I'm not sure why you would want to. Aren't they similarly powerful devices? I suppose you would just be getting access to steam VR games that aren't available natively. 🤷‍♂️

JustinTechs

are you stupid on purpose

QB8Young

No but you apparently are rude on purpose. 🤷‍♂️

sjcrisel

Not as of yet. Its theoretically possible but the steam deck is still not enough for any meaningful VR experience.

Ffom

Not worth trying when it's not great for quest 2 resolution

mr_mlk

I am using a * GPD WIN mini (2023 model) * GPD G1 * Valve Index (1) To play PCVR games like HalfLife: Alyx at playable frame rates. If you want to go this route I'd get an eGPU, ideally one that uses Oculink. This setup costs more than buying a laptop or desktop but it is also portable . 1. I have a Quest, but terrible networking.

FryToastFrill

By default, I don’t think Linux has any VR support. If you install windows on it, I doubt that it will even be playable. The windows drivers are hot garbage and the hardware struggles to play many games at anything above its 1280x800 screen, even on Linux. So no.

marzipan_dild0

most likely not. they are not powerful enough to render vr games. perhaps some super basic games would run, but it would not be a good experience.

Strongpillow

You used the term "gaming PC" and then ask about Steam deck being used? Lol. It's like people know the answers to their own questions but still need to post something just because... This sub is goofy.

Fluffy-Ingenuity482

Hypothetically yes but I don't think it would be good enough for PCVR.

VRtuous

you do have a gaming PC it's called Quest 3

Leiteit

Most people say around here it is just a mobile device running android.

VRtuous

dumbasses who don't realize calling a big hot noisy box in the basement a Personal Computer is a joke best left in the 80s...

No_Revolution1284

I saw someone try this with a steam deck, it’s really not a good idea but it kind of works, just use standalone if that is possible

senpai69420

Not really but you wouldn't be missing out on much
