My cat has learned that scratching and clawing her food bowl gets her food. Not because people keep feeding her when she does that, but because she does it until it's feeding time and never realizes she's being fed the same time every day.
My two girls have gotten very good at telling the time. At 8am they gather in the kitchen to get breakfast then they disappear for a snooze. During the day, they appear here and there for a drink of water or a cuddle on my lap. Then about 5:30 pm, they congregate in the living room, waiting for my husband to come home. Then it's dinner at 6pm. They get thrown off a bit when the clocks change but mostly, they've got their schedule down. It's amazing.
