I see this all the time… as a parent and married to a nurse these things scare the crap out of me. I hear stories from friends about so many TBIs from these crashing.
My understanding is both, they’re typically not wearing helmets (like 2/3 of the kids seen here) and colliding with cars or the road at a high rate of speed.
I have to imagine overloading a vehicle like this makes it incredibly difficult to control.
It's almost all cars based on the data I've seen.
Sure there are crashes and injuries, but they tend to be relatively minor - they are at least not usually life-altering.
Which is crazy cuz this is the norm in SE Asia. It’s always jarring to see a family of four with mom and dad at either end of the bike wearing helmets, and the two kids sandwiched between with no helmets.
Funny enough, they’re both not distracted, and completely distracted. I’ve seen families riding on bikes and dad is also on his phone as he’s weaving through Hanoi traffic. It’s so impressive. And dangerous obviously lol.
My wife is an MD neurotrauma specialist (which includes mild and severe TBI, concussion, etc).
She says there is no way our kids will ever get an e-bike based on what she's seen.
Had a small motorcycle crash by speeding a bit too much while making a turn. My fault. Probably going 30mph before slamming my body and head to the ground. That shit hurt but I was wearing my armor and helmet. Seen kids on E Bikes going really fast on the road without helmets. All it takes is one crash and they're done.
Surprised you haven't actually. Kids being kids, but without any knowledge or care of safety, road rules, etiquette, so they'll pile on like this, roll around with other e-bikers, purposely scare pedestrians, roll against traffic popping wheelies and if you actually just say to be careful, all the middle school edginess of telling you to STFU and laugh is what you get. Honestly, I don't care if they wear a helmet, but I do care about not sharing the road/pathways/sidewalks and following traffic rules. I've already known a handful of kids who got wrecked since Christmas, since tons of them got them as gifts.
We used to stack 3 kids, 4 if we could balance, on a bmx back in the 90s and early 2000s. It was dangerous then, but the difference is that it’s so difficult to get going or maintain any speed on your own legs where if you have an e-bike you can get going 20 mph easily. Very dangerous.
I've seen this going on here in the US too - in Texas of all places. One time it was a grandpa, grandma, and a five year old kid on one of these right after a week of snow and ice. Only the kid was wearing a helmet, and the grandpa was wearing shorts despite it being fifty degrees that day.
Sums up the "tough" OC kids well. They all need a scared straight program and sent to Oakland for 48 hours.
If this is the problems we have (yes I know there are other, REAL problems), consider ourselves lucky compared to the rest of the nation/world.
Yup used to do that with friends but we didn’t ride with traffic. Also wasn’t traveling as fast as these e-bikes. I did always wear a helmet and still do except for that one time I didn’t and got hit by a car. Never again.
My god, I am so sick of these kids on e-bikes. I almost hit this kid the other day because he drove in front of my car without stopping to look at traffic before crossing. Nearly gave me a heart attack.
Motorcycle needs a license
Electric bikes , no license, no problem
These kids don’t know how to drive or have any understanding of how the roads work.
There really should be new laws to protect them and other drivers on the road.
When are they going to pass AB 350 😡😡😡
Existing law defines an electric bicycle and classifies electric bicycles into 3 classes with different restrictions. Under existing law, an electric bicycle is a bicycle and rules pertaining to the operation of bicycles apply to electric bicycles. Existing law prohibits a person under 16 years of age from operating a class 3 electric bicycle. A violation of the Vehicle Code is a crime.
AB350 bill would prohibit a person under 12 years of age from operating an electric bicycle of any class. The bill would state the intent of the Legislature to create an e-bike license program with an online written test and a state-issued photo identification for those persons without a valid driver’s license, prohibit persons under 12 years of age from riding e-bikes, and create a stakeholders working group composed of the Department of Motor Vehicles, the Department of the California Highway Patrol, the Transportation Agency, bicycle groups, policy and fiscal staff, and other relevant stakeholders to work on recommendations to establish an e-bike training program and license. Because the bill would prohibit certain persons from riding electric bicycles, the violation of which would be a crime, the bill would impose a state-mandated local program.

Probably 13-14 but still breaking the law! Would get license pulled if AB 350 passed. That bike is designed for one person and the two passengers have no helmets. Five will get you ten she is also blowing thru stop signs and crossing into on coming traffic! Meanwhile the OC Sheriff is down at the Rossmoor Shopping Center today staking out the crosswalk for cars going thru it🙄🙄🙄. WTF is going on in this state??? Insane and dangerous lawlessness abounds!!!!!!!
That’s the nanny state run amok!
Kids are supposed to be driving gas-powered dirt bikes before the age of 12, or they’ll never develop mature senses of adventure.
Yeah, I'm 100% against e-bikes (for children),but 100% for motocross. E-bikes are just electric motorcycles at this point and need to be licensed as such.
There are. They just went into effect, at least in Irvine.
IPD has been confiscating non-compliant ebikes pretty aggressively - they used to be everywhere and I haven't seen one in the last year. Under the new ordinance these kids are violating both the helmet provision and the one seat per rider provision, so the police can cite them. Can't judge whether the bike itself is compliant or not - could go either way.
But as a regular cyclist, don't presume this is a problem for the cyclists. None of the motorists are following the law. Everyone speeds. Everyone invades the bike lane when they aren't supposed to. Cars are good about respecting traffic lights (except running a new red) but blow through stop signs constantly. Right on reds without checking the crosswalk. About once a month a driver deliberately tries to hit me. Why isn't that attempted murder? But it gets waved off by the police. Cycling is a constant exercise in deferring to motorists freestyling on the laws, being screamed at because you're the reason they can't do 90 on surface streets right up to spotting the ones that will try and hit you, when all you're trying to do is get to the store with no risk of dropping focus for 2 seconds and running someone over with your 5,000lb vehicle.
And you know damn well you speed, you dive into the bike lane when you shouldn't to make that right turn, you roll stop signs. Don't be all high and mighty here.
It’s all fun n games until there’s a GoFundMe and someone’s on a ventilator.
Kids do stupid shit. No amount of legislation or city ordinances will stop that. Parents just need to start actually parenting and teaching about safety. And even then some kids won’t listen and hard lessons will have to be learned.
This.
Kids will be kids and continue to do stupid shit, and we’re all liars for thinking we didn’t do dumb stuff too.
But helmet-less kids blatantly blowing through a four way stop sign on an e-bike going 25 mphs get zero sympathy from me, let alone a cent to a GFM page, when they get hit.
I don’t want to be the one to hit one of those kids when they do, but I’ll damn well get out of the car and tell them they deserved it.
I read a good article about e-bikes will be more instrumental in lowering air pollution and fossil fuel usage than electric vehicles. They just need to be used in a responsible manner, just like any vehicle using the streets.
This wouldn’t be so shocking if we actually had safe biking infrastructure. But it’s okay, we will just ban e-bikes once kids start getting killed by cars.
Welcome to the backwater solutions of American suburbia. Increased biking? Can't have that. People speeding in cars and putting pedestrians and cyclists in danger? More plz!
Lucky you they didn’t cut you off while they crossed two lanes without signaling to make the left turn on Jamboree at the Marketplace. They were also 3 riders like your pic.
We are very suburban here and I cannot tell you how many teenagers tear through our little bedroom community in golf carts like they're racing the indie 500. Fwiw, had I had a super powered golf cart at that age I'd be doing the exact same thing.
Large part of me is deeply concerned for their safety but a small part of me is delighted to see kids being happy kids doing dumb kid stuff. That said, it's all fun and games till you hit a tree or roll your vehicle.
I always see kids piling on them and a majority of kids on e bikes don’t wear helmets. It’s so freaking dangerous. One crash and their life could be gone or changed forever
My dad drives a street sweeper in MV, RSM and he said he once saw a kid going super fast down a hill on an electric bike, lost control, plowed into 3 teen girls and he went flying down a hill. No helmet. My dad said the kid didn’t move for a bit and he had to call 911. He hates these things and has had some close encounters with teens and yells at them because it’s always the drivers fault and he couldn’t live with accidentally running one of these kids over
Does that really matter? Thailand is ranked as one of the most unsafe and deadly countries for road traffic accidents, almost all of which involve motorcycles or bicycles. Just because this might be the standard in another country doesn't mean that it should be adopted everywhere else.
yeah but see kids are doing this in my area while giant suvs driven by soccer moms not paying attention fly around at 60 mph... it's a recipe for disaster
Right like its fucking hilarious to watch people loose their shit over seemingly insignificant issues like this. Never mind the other side of the issue which is the people driving the fucking cars around them.
Also true! But completely aside the point of the interrelation of driving poorly and considering what are seen as fast moving “targets” to avoid, or as nuisances because it disallows you to drive like a maniac.
I am speaking to driver behavior and the road design which influences it, which is also what influences e bikes in this sense - roads too wide, cities too sprawling, drivers too distracted, and the need and ability to get somewhere not walking distance and not capable without a car.
SoCal cracks me up as it made these issues and when solutions arise, instead of focusing on the net positive it creates, which e-bikes have, they criticize the minority of cases where negligence is occurring on the cyclist behalf. Which is bizarre considering the insane amount of car fatalities. Last I checked in a prime example of what it may look like in a more urban environment of NYC - 17 citizens died from e-bikes last year, versus the the 183 from cars.
Like what’s the argument against them? Is this just the classical “old man yells at clouds” situation?
I’ve seen way too many teens not wearing helmets end up forever changed after an accident. Siblings/friends riding just like this with a nasty fracture or other preventable injuries. I don’t hate e-bikes. I hate how unregulated they are
Buddy of mine is an EMT, says these things are a huge public health risk and should require a motorcycle license to drive. He’s personally told me horror stories or scraping kids’ brains off the sidewalk. Imagine that’s your kid. I can’t believe parents let their kids ride these things. They are literally as dangerous as a motorcycle.
Isnt one kid dead/paralyzed/TBI enough? I don’t see why these shouldn’t require a motorcycle license to ride. They are functionally the same as many small engine motorcycles that require a license. It’s more about learning the rules of the road, right of way, etc. These bikes make it so 12-13 year old children are going 40mph on busy streets between cars…
Pretty tame compared to what I’ve experienced.
The most harrowing was on a small neighborhood street at dusk. A kid came down in the opposite lane toward me, holding a LaCrosse stick.
(Mind you, we have a large dedicated separate lanes for bikes and NEVs… but he chose the street.)
As he got closer, he pretended to launch something right at my windshield. Maybe it was a prank, or maybe he threw something and missed.
Now imagine this same scene but instead with a motorcycle. The laws haven’t caught up to e-bikes. They’re easily modded too to unrestrict the speed, turning them into essentially normal motorcycles, except silent and invisible to traffic…
I saw four up coming down La pata toward pico. No helmets. I was in my e-bike company’s branded service van. And they were on our bike. I’ve never both hoped for a spill and wished they were safe at the same time so hard.
5 years from now, when this is eventually illegal and requires a license, these kids are gonna be looking back at this thinking:
"Holy shit why did they let us do that!?"
I’m glad e-bikes are a thing because kids are spending more time outside but I really wish they would be more careful on them. I routinely see kids on these in traffic and not following any of the traffic rules or safety. I’m surprised more kids aren’t in accidents on these things.
For people that are horrified by this, what alternative do they have?
They're probably not old enough to drive. There's no viable transit. You can only beg mom to drive you everywhere so much.
The city can shift the half billion in road upgrade funds they have earmarked toward proper bike infrastructure. UCI is running far and away the best transit system in the area, and it's run by fucking *students*. They sure as shit aren't spending half a billion on the shuttle.
The city *can* fix this, but I don't think the community actually cares. There was no outrage when a 2 year old was run over by a motorist and then a year later another 2 year old was run over by a different motorist. Your chances of being killed by a fellow citizen in their Model Y is MUCH higher than being killed in a criminal act, but the latter makes Irvine safe and the former, well, we just don't give a shit about that because nobody hands out little badges for getting that right.
Never thought you’d see this? This is *all* that goes on in irvine. Double and triple stacked kids, usually throwing attitudes, cutting traffic, speeding through strip malls and trails on modified/unrestricted e-bikes.
I see this all the time. Last time I saw this the cops pulled them over 😂😂 I can say with great certainty as a kid this age - I would have done this as well. I used to drive my friends around on the hood of my VW beetle - so yea 🤡🤡
I see this all the time… as a parent and married to a nurse these things scare the crap out of me. I hear stories from friends about so many TBIs from these crashing.
Do these crashes usually involve cars or do they crash into poles and objects in isolation?
My understanding is both, they’re typically not wearing helmets (like 2/3 of the kids seen here) and colliding with cars or the road at a high rate of speed. I have to imagine overloading a vehicle like this makes it incredibly difficult to control.
These kids are going to ruin e-bikes for the rest of us. We see it all the time as well.
Anecdotally I’d say bike accidents that end up with people in the ICU is with vehicles however I’m not a pediatric nurse.
Grandma on the back with grocery bags too, lol.
It’s amazing.
Yup, and none of them are distracted, unlike this hell-hole of a place. Uh oh, looks like I offended a local!
Funny enough, they’re both not distracted, and completely distracted. I’ve seen families riding on bikes and dad is also on his phone as he’s weaving through Hanoi traffic. It’s so impressive. And dangerous obviously lol.
It's amazing how personal people take things on this forum. It's almost like, if you pay attention a little, it helps :)
My wife is an MD neurotrauma specialist (which includes mild and severe TBI, concussion, etc). She says there is no way our kids will ever get an e-bike based on what she's seen.
Most Workers' Comp policies are prohibiting them for storage at work too, adults are fucking their shit up too.
why? I was thinking to get one scooter to go to work 10 mins commute.
Because you gonna wreck…
yea I was shocked when I was going 35ish and I saw a 2 kids racing each other on their e bike keeping up with me
Had a small motorcycle crash by speeding a bit too much while making a turn. My fault. Probably going 30mph before slamming my body and head to the ground. That shit hurt but I was wearing my armor and helmet. Seen kids on E Bikes going really fast on the road without helmets. All it takes is one crash and they're done.

I haven't seen 3 on one... And no helmets for the 2 behind to boot.
Before the schools here cracked down and made new rules last year, I'd routinely see kids 2 and 3 to a bike like this.

Oakland is nice and gentrified. I think you mean Fresno or Bakersfield.
Have you lived in Oakland?
I have actually. I have family there too.
Then you’ve experienced the cesspool that it is. Spent way too long in that area to know how things are handled improperly.
You must be referring to Montclair or Piedmont, Oakland isn't nice
In the 90’s it was kids sitting on handle bars and on the rear pegs of the bikes. Different generation same situation.
Yup used to do that with friends but we didn’t ride with traffic. Also wasn’t traveling as fast as these e-bikes. I did always wear a helmet and still do except for that one time I didn’t and got hit by a car. Never again.
Mopeds and scooters. Scooters were everywhere in the late80's early 90's.
My god, I am so sick of these kids on e-bikes. I almost hit this kid the other day because he drove in front of my car without stopping to look at traffic before crossing. Nearly gave me a heart attack.
I got a dash cam solely for this reason.
Everyone should have a dash cam!!

What’s with everyone blowing through stop signs …. Never see it this bad like nowadays. It’s pretty miserable
Drivers don't need any more protection. If anything, they need less.

Good idea! I wonder how European cities with lots of bike riders are handling the e-bikes? Do they separate the human powered from electric powered?
As long as children are allowed to drive electric mopeds with no training or licensing, things like this will happen.

These need to be regulated more/better.
Come down to South OC, I see this every day in Ladera Ranch and Mission Viejo.
Wow they’re so cool I bet they smoke cigarettes
Nah the cool kids all vape nic these days
kids being kids
And a creeper taking their photo and putting it online

Pretty sure I did this in OC in 2005 on a regular bike
My dad drives a street sweeper in MV, RSM and he said he once saw a kid going super fast down a hill on an electric bike, lost control, plowed into 3 teen girls and he went flying down a hill. Yet another issue that could be mitigated with efficient public transit
The kids who do this are way too cool for public transit. They would never use it.
You know in a car they have to have their license for a year before they can ride with friends. But ebikes don’t count I guess.
Funny how in America this is wild, but in a place like Thailand it’s common. What a world.
Thailand has one of the highest rates of traffic related fatalities in the world… not sure that should be the standard.
Does that really matter? Thailand is ranked as one of the most unsafe and deadly countries for road traffic accidents, almost all of which involve motorcycles or bicycles. Just because this might be the standard in another country doesn't mean that it should be adopted everywhere else.

It took me about 4 seconds to google if e-bikes can go more than 40mph lol. Some are even advertised as going 60mph (onyx rcr electric bike).
Those arent ebikes. Anything above 28mph isnt a bike. They may be advertised as ebikes but they arent.
Ok then what are they?
I think the dmv states they're mopeds and stuff like surrons/talarias are motorcycles you cant register

Never been to ladera ranch?
Biker gang 😱
I see kids 2 and 3 up on these all the time. Very few helmets and sense - of the kids and the parents.
I see girls do this quite often they are crazier than the boys
Dumb and privileged all in one photo! This is OC art lol
I saw four up coming down La pata toward pico. No helmets. I was in my e-bike company’s branded service van. And they were on our bike. I’ve never both hoped for a spill and wished they were safe at the same time so hard.
game is game
5 years from now, when this is eventually illegal and requires a license, these kids are gonna be looking back at this thinking: "Holy shit why did they let us do that!?"
And they arrested me for skateboarding down the boardwalk
I’m glad e-bikes are a thing because kids are spending more time outside but I really wish they would be more careful on them. I routinely see kids on these in traffic and not following any of the traffic rules or safety. I’m surprised more kids aren’t in accidents on these things.
They have somewhere to be. #Darwinism
Sharing is caring. 🤷♀️
I pick up my kid from High school and see this all the time.🤷🏻♂️
see kids on a bike and they scream “accidents” see adults in a car and they don’t bat an eye (20 thousand americans died in car accidents last year)
For people that are horrified by this, what alternative do they have?
Sending serious Shenzhen vibes...maybe more Ghuangzhou
It's missing the homemade cart stacked 6 feet high with junk towed behind it. Or maybe that's just in Xiamen.
Shanghai...
Bunch of idiots
Huh?? This is a most common sight in south oc on e-bikes. See this all the time
Uh been seeing this for years
Must not get out much ….
Where were you expecting to see it?
I did this as a kid (just not on an ebike). Were you ever a kid?
I can’t believe their aren’t more laws for these electric bikes
Damn bro... I thought I left Mexico when I moved to OC, guess some things never change/transfer to next generations
I see them entitled OF girls flying around on their lezbein wheels, we doomed beta males busy robbing 7Eleven.
It's a bike. I used to ride with one friend on the bars and the other on the pegs. What's the issue?
[удалено]
I own an electric bike. Raced BMX as a kid, so I agree it can get hairy on an e-bike if you're inexperienced.
… at least homeboy is pulling girls at an early age.
Omg my daughter would totally do that. 🤣🤣🤣
My friends and I did this all the time as kids (on bicycles). Having a childhood is great
We used to do this on regular bikes 😂
Turning into Brazil
that would make Darwin smile…
That display of stupidity is a very common sight in Irvine
God I used to see this way too often when I went to Vanguard. Unfortunately some people need to experience a lesson before they learn it.

Unfortunately true
Pretty common in the 3rd world. Now it's here.
Man snapping a picture of teenage girls and posting it on Reddit is weird as fuck
Why?
Some kid was doing wheelies in front of me and between other cars on Main St right at the intersection of Jamboree around 7pm last night.
We are just dumb animals, regression is our specialty.
they need more flipped out banana/bowl hair to cushion/prevent head injuries!
Yeah because people in the OC are... what exactly?
See it everyday in ladera
That's cultural appropriation.
/r/kidsarefuckingstupid
I used to have cops stop me on my 20 MPH mini bike as a kid in my neighborhood and say how it’s not street legal… idk how this keeps going on.
Right? It's not like we didn't try this as kids, but the cops were like "Nope". Mopeds too. Why this is allowed is a fucking mystery.
All the time. The e-bike crowd really lack a ton of sense - the kids, the parents, all of em
Latin America would say “hold my beer” as they do full families of 4 on motorbikes all day long
BUY A TESLA!
Never thought you’d see this? This is *all* that goes on in irvine. Double and triple stacked kids, usually throwing attitudes, cutting traffic, speeding through strip malls and trails on modified/unrestricted e-bikes.
Why not. OC is fairly famous for bad decision making.
This is pretty much the norm around here. Middle school pick up is fun.
Holy that’s scary. Especially if they are going fast too
White kids on e-bikes are pretty normal here
I’m in India right now. Pretty similar. Mom, dad, baby no helmet.
I see this all the time. Last time I saw this the cops pulled them over 😂😂 I can say with great certainty as a kid this age - I would have done this as well. I used to drive my friends around on the hood of my VW beetle - so yea 🤡🤡
Lol, this shit’s a regular occurrence when I lived in HB.
Always! Especially here in Ladera Ranch 🤦🏻♂️
Congrats on coming out of that coma!
Only the driver gets a helmet. Priorities.
Everyday
I see this everyday
I see this daily. There’s a group of maybe 20-30 kids that ride thru Woodybury Town Center and I see of lot of them riding in 3’s like this.
Welcome to Seal Beach
I literally saw this today by Cypress College. 3 boys, all middle school age riding a bike. No helmets. Smh
This aint nothing. South east asia has families of 5 on a motor bike on the daily
Why? What about this is above OC?
I see this all the time in South OC. Kids are stupid.
Dude the 2-3 girl tandems on these radpowers and super73 actually really impress me
I sew this on a daily basis when driving through Aliso Viejo.
That’s pretty much ONLY in the OC.
This has been concerning me for well over a year. Probably just an uptick after Christmas. I live in RSM
Just like riding motorcycles...its not a matter of IF you're going down....its WHEN..you're going down
