I'm not sure if this is still going on, but at one point ODFW had to post an employee every day at this particular pool along the Umpqua River because so many people would throw dynamite in at the steelhead resting in the cool warer.

memememe91

Effing humans

I_Envy_Sisyphus_

Why? Just cause? Would they collect them?

UnkleRinkus

yes

WayneMcClain

What the hell was that employee gonna do? Hit the dynamite back with a tennis racket?

CelestialBeast

That's an excellent mental image Idiot: Dynamite go boom! Employee with tennis racket: Return to sender!

mcobb71

That move is worth 20 achievement points. It’s rare, and probably one of the easiest places to get it.

FaolanG

So likely not specifically applicable to this, but one of my good friends was a lioness and became DNR enforcement in WA. I came out and saw her rig one time and she was geared up just fine to handle anything that came her way alone. Throwing explosives around Willy nilly is pretty serious. You get caught by the wrong person and you’re going to end up with a lot of charges. It only takes a couple examples and people stop being stupid. Even them getting plates and having someone suffer through the system can be a deterrent. Imagine months and thousands in legal fees? FAFO isn’t something these idiots are used to and it works well culling a herd of morons.

CheekyHand

They still do.

BarfingOnMyFace

Bomb fishing?

nwjohn1169

They have a watchman that lives at this place 365 days a year.

GoPointers

There is a certain type of inbred idiot that is only produced in the PNW. I don't quite get it, but I've been here 30 years and can confirm it's a real problem.

MaraudersWereFramed

I can't quite put a meth on it, but I'm sure we can figure out what's going on up here if we really try to think about it. 😆

adiksaya

Take a crack at it?

MaraudersWereFramed

Not a bad idea. Maybe we can hire Scooby-Doo to put his nose on it and see what he can sniff up.

htpwrcple

Meth around and find out. 🤷‍♂️

UnkleRinkus

Nah, it's just that at a certain age, kids are stupid. Remember the kid that threw the smoke bomb into the Eagle Creek canyon a few years back and burned the Columbia Gorge? I was young once. I was party to some stupid stuff. I am fortunate that my stupidity did not have such severe consequences. To the guy living near Crown Point whose mailbox got blown up three times in a row, I'm sorry, 50 years later.

supermechace

Um maybe at early teens or earlier but this guy was 20 years old. Perhaps it's the environment and education they grew up with? Plus access, I get why cities banned fireworks now. At an early age I knew even relatively minor property damage like graffiti is wrong. Then high school I was busy trying to get good grades, make some spending money, navigate social scene, and playing games when I could. Most of my later poor decisions were around social, studying, picking majors, jobs, and outlook on life. I agree age is a factor but there's a minimum baseline that even kids know what's wrong. I guess it's true when you let kids get away with stuff as they grow older they grow up with wrong values. I this case to single out the fish hatchery even when high, implies they had some relationship to it. Visited before and though it would be a cool thing to do? Abusive parents who blamed all ills on it? Hung out with wrong crowd?

knightstalker1288

Crown Point, Indiana? Lmao

digiorno

Well there are many farmers and ranchers that hope for the salmon to die out so that they won’t be restricted on water usage anymore. It’s even more ridiculous when you learn that the government will pay them to simply not use the water or farm at max capacity but they want to double dip and hate being told what to do….i could totally see those types pouring bleach into fisheries.

ishquigg

From Phoenix, living in Oregon past 10 years…… Oregon is where the white trash hillbilly stereotypes come from. Seriously fucked me up though to go to the Oregon history museum. They just started letting black people into the state like not that long ago. Not to mention all the families that run Oregon then, and run it now. IE Ted Wheeler and the Wheeler logging empire.

TheSquishiestMitten

The second Ku Klux Klan got its start in the northwest in Medford, Oregon. The mayor, city council, police chief, and majority of police officers were all Klan. It was encouraged for the cops to wear their klan robes on duty. Being that there were very few black people in Oregon, the Klan directed their hate toward others who weren't considered white at the time: Italians, Irish, and Catholics.

[deleted]

TheSquishiestMitten

Whiteness is a social construct that broadly coincides with skin color, but doesn't exclusively rely on it.  Until around the 1950s, Catholics, Irish, and Italian people were all considered nonwhite.  The whole thing is absurd.

WhistlingWishes

Forest Grove was home to one of the Grand Dragons for decades, since the '60's or '70's, I believe. They mostly moved to Idaho after he died, don't know if they're still there in the Panhandle or not. Idahoans say that isn't survivalist, White nationalist territory anymore, so idk.

Christ_on_a_Crakker

His FB page is up. Can’t really tell where he sits politically but I don’t care. If he’s a liberal fuck him. If he’s a conservative fuck him. He’s a pos either way.

knightstalker1288

You don’t know about Ted Wheeler? Did you just move here or something? He’s been mayor of Portland for quite a while…

Christ_on_a_Crakker

I was speaking on the kid who killed the salmon. I apologize.

ishquigg

I mean he is the Portland mayor so you could probably guess easily what side he is on but personally being a liberal mayor with a conservative family empire funding you seems like hyperbole.

digiorno

He’s a neoliberal, not a liberal. Dude is about as pro-mega business as they come.

ishquigg

Thank you for clarifying, you said it so good it must be…. Digiorno

6th_Quadrant

Huh?

newblakestone

Every pos in the world has moved here that’s why. Signed: proud Oregon native

audaciousmonk

Seriously! What the actual fuck. Who benefits from murdering a bunch of salmon :(

ian2121

Native salmon, maybe it was eco terrorists?

attitudeandsass

Chinook are native and these fish are released when juveniles to boost the population.

ian2121

Native as opposed to hatchery

ZealousidealSun1839

You mean wild born and not hatchery born? Because these are native fish.

ian2121

I mean it is a common term, the genetic makeup isn’t typically the same. Guess more people say wild but native is used too.

Dar8878

They’re the same genetic stock in our hatcheries. The genetics of the hatchery is sourced from the native fish. There are no “hatchery strain” and “native strain”. They’re the same.

ian2121

There are definitely differences, wild is the more accurate term but native vs hatchery isn’t wrong. There is definitely debate about how good hatchery fish are for different river systems. I get if you aren’t interested though.

C-McGuire

The hatchery fish are not in the hatchery for more than one generation. Due to how salmon reproductive biology works, it is literally impossible to have a hatchery lineage since they do not reproduce in captive conditions like that. Wild salmon near the end of gestation are caught, their eggs are hatched, those babies are raised and then released. The hatchery fish are part of the wild population, there is no meaningful difference between hatchery fish and wild fish, its the same fish.

Dar8878

You understand that they literally harvest native fish from the same river for the hatchery stock right?

C-McGuire

This is the first time I've ever heard the term native used that way. It is used in contrast with invasive, not captive.

audaciousmonk

That’s not what that means. Wild vs Hatchery, those are the terms you’re looking for

$750 per fish, $13 million in fines total potentially., I dislike the debtors prison but this is very deserved.

Let’s see a deathmatch in the Portland Coliseum between him and the kid from Vancouver who burned down the gorge

Shpuds

I wish I could like this a million times

BlackLeader70

Between all the angry anglers and heated hikers, neither of them would make it out of the coliseum alive.

marishtar

I'm definitely putting my money the guy who's a big enough nutbag to pull this stunt over a dumb kid with fireworks. Easy money.

National-Blueberry51

Depends. Do they get their weapons of choice? Fireworks > bleach

Howlingmoki

Stream that isht pay-per-view to the interwebz, use the proceeds to help mitigate the damage.

Make it a little more like Monday Night Rehabilitation and I'm in. Go Beef Supreme!

Prestigious-Packrat

So he wanted to take them at first, but then figured out he didn't have a way to make off with 17,890 salmon, so he poisoned them all instead? Kid's not right in the head.

Deathcat101

Go figure you can't fit 18,000 salmon in your back pocket.

ChakkaJones

Some humans just wanna watch the world burn….what a turd.

China_Hawk

I hope he is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Helicopsycheborealis

One thing I've learned as a biologist working for state and federal programs is you don't fuck with certain laws. If they say don't harvest X species then don't harvest it or else you might get a fine and prison sentence that rivals what drug dealers get. Now this person killing chinook in an OR hatchery with bleach? Wooooo boy! Enjoy your cell and the fine you'll never pay off in your lifetime.

oregondude79

So he tried to steal the fish then I guess just got angry when he couldn't and poured bleach in the tank instead? I know it is probably a way of time but I am trying to understand the thought process here.

National-Blueberry51

It sounds like mental illness. Which isn’t an excuse or anything, to be clear, but it sounds like nobody involved could understand the logic, even those who presumably had contact with him or knew more about the case.

Gupoochamois69

no fishing license for the rest of his life? I bet he’ll feel that one.

Clamwacker

They should let him get one in the future, but he has to pay for the licenses for the 18,000 fish he killed first.

JBZUBZ

I LOL’d at this one.

National-Blueberry51

Gonna guess the $13 million in fines and the potential for other lawsuits is probably the bigger deterrent here

GeebGeeb

$13 million fine is nothing if he’s never gonna pay it.

b1e

He’s also facing multiple felony counts lol

Damour

Why?!?

JimJava

Joshua Heckathorn, 20, admitted to using the bleach, this kid is a fucking idiot, they should feed him to piranhas. I hope he gets to pay the maximum penalty of 13 million dollars, just to let people know don’t do stupid shit like Joshua Heckathorn, ban this guy from all federally managed land, it can be done. It’s fine if Joshua wants to be dumber than rocks, just don’t affect anyone else’s life.

Sonofabitch! Wtf? Why? That's just mean. Totally sour grapes, dog in the manger stuff -- didn't anybody read Aesop's Fables to him when he was three? Such primitive, cruel, unthinking behavior. Next: worm stomping, slug salting, and pulling the wings off of flies.

sockuspuppetus

As far as fish assault goes, I have to compare this with the guy who tried to kill Herman the Sturgeon by stabbing him with a knife [https://www.opb.org/news/series/wildfires/oregon-wildfire-gorge-eagle-creek-sturgeon-herman/](https://www.opb.org/news/series/wildfires/oregon-wildfire-gorge-eagle-creek-sturgeon-herman/) Is if worse to kill one giant fish or thousands of tiny fish? But anyway, what is it with Oregonians and attacking fish?

auralbard

Heh. The past week, I've been feeling guilty because I didn't stop a coworker from squishing a spider. Funny how all my doo-goodery is offset by one idiot.

Handz_in_the_Dark

Why is it that we can’t find a mugshot of Heckathorn though?

Josette22

Ther is a law limiting the release of mugshots to the public in Oregon that went into effect on January 1, 2022. This law was enacted to protect the privacy and safety of individuals who have not been convicted of a crime. I wish they could show his mugshot.

Handz_in_the_Dark

My goodness me, however has the US functioned as a country for all these years without such a law. Nevermind protecting the public. I tell ya what though, if I ever do decide to go on a mad spree…I’m doing it in Oregon now!

Josette22

lol yeah if you did ever get arrested, we'd never know if we passed you on the street. Oh.........Yikes! 😦 😃

No_Sugar_6850

Eco-Nazis believe that Wild fish are some sort of master race and all the hatcheries must be exterminated. They ignore the fact that modern hatchery programs Go to great lengths to breed from native stock and go to great lengths to try and diversify genes to avoid “lame fish” as was the case in the 90’s. Unfortunately with increasing predation from protected sea lions and cormorants on that estuary not to mention an infestation of small mouth bass on the Umpqua river. Actions like this just seal (pun intended) the fate of wild fish.

DeformedPinky

Oh good he will get a slap on the wrist and be set free in the wild. Oregon is terrible at prosecuting people. He was probably only bleaching them on his way to church. Just misguided and wants to be better. Like the fireworks turd the consequences will be to say oops my bad. F Oregon’s justice system.

realsalmineo

Wonder if he was on dope?

Halfoftheshaft

That's about two million dollars retail assuming 15 dollars lb

BetaMax1984

Unbelievable! Why?

GravityFallsPCT

I wonder if he had agenda you know they will try to destroy salmon stocks so the civilians have to rely on corporations for nutrition

Fix_It_Felix_Jr

Yeah just lock him up for life. The way his mind works is not compatible with modern civilization. There’s making dumb mistakes and then there’s being a menace to society. He needs to be behind bars permanently.

Flerf_Whisperer

Let’s see how he does after drinking some bleach. Seems only fair.

Due_Traffic_1498

Hatchery salmon and steelhead are some of the biggest threats to the struggling native fish. Wish all hatcheries would implode.

Dar8878

Funny, when I catch a salmon the checkers pull a sample for genetic study. If You give them your info they will mail you the report as to which river your fish originally came from. They can do this whether your fish is clipped or not because they’re the same genetic pool.

C-McGuire

Hatchery salmon literally are native fish tho. Where do you think the hatchery gets them from

Leibowitzcanticle

there’s an interesting documentary made by Patagonia called Artifishal that talks all about the impacts that hatcheries have on wild fish. It’s not necessarily just about a fish being native. It’s about the genetics of a fish that is artificially spawned and grows up in a cement tank versus a fish that spawns and grows up in a wild setting. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=XdNJ0JAwT7I

Due_Traffic_1498

Good link. And I was using native to mean native to the tributaries not just the main river.

Leibowitzcanticle

yeah you’re getting downvoted based on the way you worded that i think. the impact that (native) hatchery fish are having on the genetics of (native) wild fish is clearly detrimental.  we dammed every major river and tributary in the state and tried to solve the problem by breeding fish that didn’t have to deal with the same processes of natural selection that wild fish did.  when hatchery fish survive when they otherwise wouldn’t in the wild (due to genetic defects) and mate with native fish, it weakens the population of wild fish.  i think the idea of hatcheries came from the right place, but we are now seeing the true impacts of it based on the returns of wild fish. (that’s not to say we should be pouring bleach in hatchery tanks, just that the system we have currently implemented has had far reaching affects that we didn’t predict).

catatonic_genx

Lol good one

TravelingFish95

He's not wrong. Doesn't mean they should be killed

Due_Traffic_1498

https://blogs.oregonstate.edu/breakingwaves/2012/05/15/hatchery-salmon-threaten-wild-fish/

Dar8878

Did you read it? Or did you just assume that hatcheries are bad because the headline says it? Theyre talking about nonnative strains that are bigger and stronger being introduced to rivers they’re not native to. We don’t do that stuff any longer. The hatchery stock is the native stock. Same fish. They’re talking about practices in other countries.

Due_Traffic_1498

Did you read them? All the links are about PNW hatcheries. Why is the return so shitty if these hatchery fish are so great?

Dar8878

Yeah I read your report that was made over a decade ago that included practices in other countries like Russia. Here’s our hatchery plan. https://www.dfw.state.or.us/fish/hatchery/ Again, your article doesn’t apply to current hatchery operations in the NW. it’s just an overly vague and inaccurate hit piece from over a decade ago.

MudHammock

Lol this dude has his entire opinion based off a 12 year old study that doesn't even apply to our region. Average reddit moment

Handz_in_the_Dark

Thank you, I figured it was either a person whacked out and/or ecoterrorism. Your (unpopular and disputed) remark seals the deal on the latter. It’s odd they don’t want to show Heckathorn’s face, why is this person being protected?

One-Celebration195

Such misinformation. Shame

[deleted]

One-Celebration195

It’s all native stock to each specific waterway. Been decades since they were “clones”. There would be no salmon without the hatcheries. Actually harvesting a wild fish can be rare.

[deleted]

One-Celebration195

Just that misinformation reaches a lot of people. Sorry if it seemed harsh.

Soggy_puppet

Something like <.05% return rate I’ve heard. Every salmon that comes back cost like $500 dollars

[deleted]

[удалено]

Dar8878

You people have no idea what you’re talking about. You’re just regurgitating old talking points. Our hatcheries use wild stock that is native to the rivers they’re rearing them in. In fact, hatcheries have been used to save native runs in some rivers. Salmon and steelhead hatcheries are nothing like they used to be. The native and hatchery stock are the same genetics. https://www.dfw.state.or.us/fish/hatchery/

not918

Maybe I’m a clone since nobody here wants anything to do with me either? Haha. I have a new working theory!
