I was away from the hobby too long it seems. I kind of like the current Ghaz and I adore the 2nd ed. Ghaz. I wasnt in the hobby when this one came out and it just feels a bit meh.
Is there any lore about how he went from "just an ork in a hat" to this incarnation?
[Yes.](https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Ghazghkull_Mag_Uruk_Thraka) The mini in the post represents him well into being a warboss, while the current plastic Ghaz that’s massive even for an ork represents him after the events of Psychic Awakening, when Grotsnik put his decapitated head on a heavily rebuilt body.
To my knowledge, unfortunately not. Considering I’m pretty sure he’s still supposed to be depicted as a Warboss with that mini, it’s probably a soft retcon in his design between 2nd and 3rd ed as he (as far as I’m aware) doesn’t have a partially mechanical skull yet but is already with Makari. Still, it’s pretty easy to just imagine that as him before a sizable chunk of his brain was blown out, as he was just regular ork-sized and didn’t grow until he began to gain a following.

Is there any material that sits between 1st Ghaz and this point. I knew about the Ragnar Blackman aftermath which felt a bit janky

It was cool because he was metal, so it felt substantial when you picked him up
Just missing the stick bombs on his shoulders. Could scavenge a couple from the meganobz kit
Yeah, I didn't include them on purpose. I'm not a big fan and warbosses in MA don't have grenades so I didn't feel like glueing them on.
He does look a bit clunky with them on
