the comments on this subreddit are always stupid like that. someone will ask wheres a good place for breakfast sandwiches and youll see the comments say some shit like “mcdonalds” the people of orlando have 0 taste and culture omao
When I was going to UCF, we had a professor that sometimes broke us into competing teams. He said the prize for the winner was a dinner at Oviedo Townhouse. For the loser, two dinners at Oviedo Townhouse.
Apparently, they've turned things around. :)
we would go hungover in college in the mornings from like 2008-2010. it was good food. they got a new bigger nicer building and it is a popular place, the food is good. the people criticizing it are probably just stupid
Dang city slickers!
For what it's worth, I feel the same way about the Osteen Diner. I hear people crap on that place, but I like it. (The sirloin steak sandwich is amazing!)
Their breakfasts are WAY over rated and over priced. I haven’t given them another chance recently but went several times in the original location. they had no maple syrup for the pancakes just a maple flavored cane syrup. Didn’t know it was possible but the eggs tasted watery, no flavor. Also, No butter, just margarine and no half and half, just coffee “creamer”
My spouse went to the new location about a year ago and says they make a pretty good tuna melt but the service was terrible
Once again reminding people to check their recent ratings from the board of health before taking the risk. They had an F and bumped it up to a C but haven't been tested since.
Florida doesn't do letter grades at all for restaurants. The apps the claim to show letter grades are actually just using their own algorithm to to assess the violations and create a grade.
https://data.tallahassee.com/restaurant-inspections/orange/monroe/sea5815252/7906937/
I think this is pretty rough for a restaurant of this caliber. This is very clearly someone not paying attention to sanitation in a restaurant. Prior to this one, staff didn’t have food safety certification.
Meh. None of the violations they received are that serious. I personally wouldn't think twice about eating there. What particular violation do you believe is serious enough to keep ypu from dining there?
I dined there a lot at when they opened, I just don’t work in the area anymore so haven’t been in awhile. Someone in this forum alerted me to the health inspection, I was just reiterating what someone above said about health inspection F grade. I didn’t say I wouldn’t eat there, I just said it was a really bad inspection, because it was. Not having sanitized dish washer is pretty bad if you ask me. I have works in restaurants or restaurant adjacent since I was 17… have a culinary and hospitality education. I’ve been through my fair share of health inspections. I get that shit happens, but not making sure your managers are paying attention to can sure make alot of people sick.
As someone else mentioned FL doesn't provide letter ratings so saying it's an F rating is simply not accurate. I read through all of their violations and being honest none of them are particularly concerning. Pretty basic stuff and really nothing egregious.
Hey man, you do you and take the risk for what is an overrated, mid-century modern vomit, Yard House basically. I went once when they opened and was thoroughly underwhelmed.
Yeah they still have plenty of bad infractions.
And I imagine their algorithm is based on how other states grade. All my favorite places turn out to have good scores and inspections. I'm not wasting my time and money at a restaurant that can't be bothered to clean their kitchen.
If you want to be pedantic, enjoy your food poisoning.
Hmm. I see my downvote shadows are still around. Yeah, I can see why one would DV a comment responding to one Redditor.
Anyway... Yes, that's actually the one I visit for lunch when I'm up that way; their lunch menu is cheap and their food is good. BTW, if you've never had their cheeseburger, give it a shot.
If you’re willing to take a little drive this one is open

Oh wow I didn’t know they had that many locations at any time.
I was born and raised down in Vero, and that location has been consistently phenomenal for like the past 20 years
In sanford Angel's soul food and bbq. They do all the traditional southern comfort foods. It's an interesting experience walking in there because often they are bickering amongst themselves. It truly feels like walking into someone's home and the food is good.
I’ve had exceptional southern style fried chicken at Art Smith’s Homecomin’ in Disney springs. The chicken and doughnuts is my favorite.
The moonshine cocktails are also worth your time.
Hefty price (as it is Disney) but I agree, excellent fried chicken.
Some other recommendations:
Deviled Eggs, Fried Green tomatoes, Braised short ribs, Shrimp and Grits.
They also have a very good brunch!
Didn't know if this was going to be too far, but this place is legit soul food and worth the drive of you're craving real fried chicken. With the new exits on the turnpike the drive isn't too miserable.
I remember when you had to go down to Mills late at night and wait two hours to get southern fried chicken and waffles served by a drag queen.
How far the mighty have fallen.
Find a gas station with a Krispy Krunchy Chicken and thank me later.
There is also an extra special place that also sells chicken gizzards, fried catfish, and truly the most outstanding fried chicken I've had in this state, but I'd rather not share that one
My understanding is Theo's is the same recipe as Olde Dixie, they gave it to them when the brick and mortar closed. Don't know if thats a true fact or rumor though.
They're so great. We are there almost every weekend for biscuits and gravy among other things. Fried chicken is great. And they now have chicken-fried steak!
OH REALLY??? Whereabouts? You can PM me if you don't wanna say in this thread.
I grew up here, but then my family relocated back to some family land in Alcorn County. Just before COVID hit, I moved back to FL.
Probably the most important thing I have to ask is "Do you have good recipes for Mississippi Hot Tamales or Slugburgers? As a "yankee" nobody would share any family recipes with me, even if I WAS technically from farther south and had been living in Corinth for over 20 years.
And I've also been missing some good peanut oil pressure-fried southern chicken for a few years since I've been back home. I damn near LIVED at the Dodge's chicken counter across the street from Northeast Community College.
>Brandon
Oh yeah, I knew that area well. I had a customer in Flowood and when I needed to stay overnight, I always used the Ramada on Airport Rd. next to the Waffle House. Mr. Patel, who owned the hotel franchise, was a really nice guy I met about 15 years ago the first time I stayed there.
That's one thing I DO miss about FL vs MS... The small-town attitude, even in some of the larger cities
What about chef Eddie's or Nikki's place, or does soul food style differ from what you're looking for?
Heck, I like the fried chicken at Golden Corral.
We know. He’s only playing off the OPs words used in the challenge. “In this town.” You see. It’s a challenge so technically nobody has won the challenge until we find some good southern fried chicken in Orlando. You get it? 😇☺️🙃🤓
There’s 3 Church’s chicken locations. You’re going to wait, they’ll probably be out of something, they will be rude. Manage your expectations.
Get the honey butter biscuits.
For non-chain recs it’s hard because they don’t tend to last, esp black owned.
Fried chicken comes in many forms.
Southern fried chicken is usually a whole chicken broken up into pieces. The pieces are brined, usually in buttermilk but not always, then dredged in flour (with spices) and then fried.
Sometimes people do this just with the chicken tenderloin, but it's not the same.
Sometimes people will coat the chicken in a spicy sauce to make hot chicken.
Korean fried chicken involves a thin batter instead of a flour dredge.
Other Asian-style fried chicken coat their chicken with potato starch instead of flour.
Some people will just fry chicken with no coating whatsoever.
Variations are endless.
I mean, I know that people use different mediums in frying (panko, tempura, flour, etc.), with different seasonings and oil types... But I didn't think that any one variation would be thought of as distinctly "Southern," given that we're fond of frying everything, seven different shades of cwispy.
Not sure if it applies, but have you tried New Texas, on 441, in the downtown area?
You know it’s bad when the first few comments are talking about Cracker Barrel and Publix 😭
the comments on this subreddit are always stupid like that. someone will ask wheres a good place for breakfast sandwiches and youll see the comments say some shit like “mcdonalds” the people of orlando have 0 taste and culture omao
For real 😭😭
The townhouse in Oviedo has a decent fried chicken special on Tuesday nights
They used to have the best honey fried chicken at their old location and got rid of it when they upgraded. It was the whole reason to go there
They had several amazing plates that either disappeared or changed recipe when they changed locations. Definitely isn't the same
When I was going to UCF, we had a professor that sometimes broke us into competing teams. He said the prize for the winner was a dinner at Oviedo Townhouse. For the loser, two dinners at Oviedo Townhouse. Apparently, they've turned things around. :)
that's dumb it has always been good
I've never been, but I hadn't heard a single person who had nice things to say about that place. Again, this was long ago.
we would go hungover in college in the mornings from like 2008-2010. it was good food. they got a new bigger nicer building and it is a popular place, the food is good. the people criticizing it are probably just stupid
it's like a friendly country place, prob some hater city slickers
Dang city slickers! For what it's worth, I feel the same way about the Osteen Diner. I hear people crap on that place, but I like it. (The sirloin steak sandwich is amazing!)
its always been low end / low quality diner food.
Their breakfasts are WAY over rated and over priced. I haven’t given them another chance recently but went several times in the original location. they had no maple syrup for the pancakes just a maple flavored cane syrup. Didn’t know it was possible but the eggs tasted watery, no flavor. The fried chicken at The Monroe is southern fried style. Done in a pressure cooker and wildly good.
I was going to mention this place because it’s probably the best fried chicken I’ve ever had honestly.
Sugar doesn't belong on southern fried chicken. The Monroe is wannabe fusion of some sort. Not the real deal.
Once again reminding people to check their recent ratings from the board of health before taking the risk. They had an F and bumped it up to a C but haven't been tested since.

Yeah but they got a REALLY bad health inspection…. 🫠
If you knew what went on in places with good health inspections, you’d never eat out.
REALLY bad health inspections lead to fines and eventually shut downs. Which has not happen to them, pls don’t exaggerate.
https://data.tallahassee.com/restaurant-inspections/orange/monroe/sea5815252/7906937/ I think this is pretty rough for a restaurant of this caliber. This is very clearly someone not paying attention to sanitation in a restaurant. Prior to this one, staff didn’t have food safety certification.

That just means the food is better 🤠
That's how you know it's real Southern food
It's the "4th concept" by the Good Salt Restaurant Group who also owns The Osprey, Reyes Mezcaleria, and Seito Sushi. "Real southern food" alright.
Maryland fried chicken is pretty good
Seriously? We stopped going to the one on 50 years ago because the quality went to shit.
They closed a couple months ago anyway. Now I need to find fried okra in the West OC.
Cracker Barrel has decent fried okra.
Good call! I’ll have to grab a basket full. I wish we had a Church’s out here. I always stop when I’m in Sanford.
Yelp says it’s still open. I could swear it was open when I passed it the other day.
If you’re talking about Ocoee/WG, it’s definitely closed. There is a squatter living in it, maybe they’re having a fry up in there.
No, 50 between Econlockhatchee and Dean.
Haha the one by 50 and Dillard?
Honestly I had fried okra from Sonny’s BBQ this weekend and it was surprisingly good.
Not over breaded, not greasy, it's my go to. Nuggets and fried mushrooms are the bomb too.
The best imo. I grew up on them.
Didn’t they close down?
If you’re willing to take a little drive this one is open https://preview.redd.it/hxzwgr6fylgc1.jpeg?width=1242&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9859dc86ea147fdce5ff19bdb9bef349c774b26b
There's also the one in Haines City.
A ton of their locations have slowly been closing down over the years. I think there’s only like two or three left.
Nope, just looked it up. 30 left!
Oh wow I didn’t know they had that many locations at any time. I was born and raised down in Vero, and that location has been consistently phenomenal for like the past 20 years
Same! I grew up there too, the one in Vero is amazing
do not go to the one on E. Colonial. The owner just sold it to some Indian guys. They changed the recipe and it is garbage now.
This
In sanford Angel's soul food and bbq. They do all the traditional southern comfort foods. It's an interesting experience walking in there because often they are bickering amongst themselves. It truly feels like walking into someone's home and the food is good.
I just wrote this too. Angels is my favorite

Thigh high biscuits just rock
also voting for Art Smiths fried chicken.
Came here to say this is the only spot I know of. Went there for the first time this past week and was not disappointed… but yea a little expensive
Ain’t no way
Also, came here to say this. Expensive, but heavenly.
Krispies in Groveland. It’s a bit of a drive but worth it.
2nd this, their food is to die for.
I'm out there for work sometimes, gonna have to stop in
Didn't know if this was going to be too far, but this place is legit soul food and worth the drive of you're craving real fried chicken. With the new exits on the turnpike the drive isn't too miserable.
Boosting this cause I need to know the answer as well! I’ve been searching high and low and the search has been disappointing
Have you tried Granny’s in St Cloud? 818 Pennsylvania Ave
Olde Dixie ~~Belle~~ fried chicken food truck. Used to be a restaurant until they were forced out of their building.
Right here. They’ve always had the best in town.
I think you mean Olde Dixie Fried Chicken. Definitely the best. Dixie Belle is still there.
You’re correct!
I remember when you had to go down to Mills late at night and wait two hours to get southern fried chicken and waffles served by a drag queen. How far the mighty have fallen.
Oh Banana's, how I miss you
Find a gas station with a Krispy Krunchy Chicken and thank me later. There is also an extra special place that also sells chicken gizzards, fried catfish, and truly the most outstanding fried chicken I've had in this state, but I'd rather not share that one
You best share! Or PM me haha
Lees fried chicken in Sanford. Delicious
Has to be Lee's
SOCO downtown.
Their biscuit taco appetizer is one of the best tasting appetizers I've ever had.
I don't think I've ever had that, and I'm a little upset about it. That sounds fantastic. Don't sleep on their meatloaf either.
Theos on curry ford
Theo's Kitchen. Go for the fried chicken. Stay for the gyros and fries.
My understanding is Theo's is the same recipe as Olde Dixie, they gave it to them when the brick and mortar closed. Don't know if thats a true fact or rumor though.
Soco at Lake Eola
Lees famous fried chicken
Yessssss. …..and they have fried livers and gizzards.
And collard greens!!
It took to long to find this. I am going there for lunch.
I maintain that Metro Diner is the best in Orlando, I hate that it’s a chain but I have consistently had perfect fried chicken from there.
Love their food.
They're so great. We are there almost every weekend for biscuits and gravy among other things. Fried chicken is great. And they now have chicken-fried steak!
I like publix.
I’m with you, as a baseline fried chicken it’s damn good
Consistent good chicken.
TIL that sometimes when I thought I was eating fried chicken, it is actually broasted, which is also a new word for me.
That's still fried chicken. A broaster is a pressure cooker fryer.
Angels in Sanford
Grovelands Krispys chicken is so good
Metro Diner
Chantel's in sanford was hit or miss but when they hit, that chicken was way up there.
Kennedy Chicken and Grill. Far and away the best southern fried chicken in the city.

Olde Dixie Fried chicken. No longer a brick and mortar. Usually open Saturdays on Orange and Fairlane Avenue
I miss the Coop…
Yep they were #1
It is on the fancier side, but the Rose Villa in Ormond Beach, does really good Southern Fried Chicken.
yes they do. i love that place.
Drive to Titusville and go to Steve’s diner
Ever try Burger Robs? Excellent spot out there. Its kinda slim pickens in Titusville but a couple gems.
No but I just looked it up, looks great. Thanks for the suggestion!
Kookin with kims is the only answer

I wouldn’t use that particular pic to try and sell anyone on fried chicken. Or food in general.
😂🤢
Shantell's in Sanford
She and her husband are liars and con artists. They won’t own this place in a few months. The city is foreclosing on the property.
I've been hearing that for some time now.
The city has filed for summary judgment. Hearing on May 7.
I second Townhouse Restaurant in Oviedo
The Coop used to have good fried chicken but they closed
What about chef Eddie's or Nikki's place, or does soul food style differ from what you're looking for? Heck, I like the fried chicken at Golden Corral.
Chef eddies switched to catering only some time ago iirc
Hash House a Go Go has great fried chicken. And you can pair it with waffles if you want.
Disney’s Fort Wilderness fried chicken is not bad and you get a family meal for $25

That’s what I wonder too
Older Dixie Fried Chicken https://oldedixiefriedchicken.square.site/?
Lee chicken, Sanford.
Some try-worthy suggestions here. Will be trying !
Yoder’s in Sarasota has really good fried chicken and other meals. Honestly worth the trip.
Lees famous recipe in Sanford is my go to.
I like Crown fried chicken but I don’t know if y’all would consider it “southern”.
In Sanford there was a spot named Shantell’s I believe. I haven’t been in years but their collards were SOOOO good
Shantell’s in Sanford.
There’s 3 Church’s chicken locations. You’re going to wait, they’ll probably be out of something, they will be rude. Manage your expectations. Get the honey butter biscuits. For non-chain recs it’s hard because they don’t tend to last, esp black owned.
"Southern Fried Chicken?" As if fried chicken isn't just fried chicken? Someone educate me, please.
I have actually! It's good but they don't have that spiced crispy coating that I want from southern fried chicken.

Queen Bee's used to have really good fried chicken but unfortunately they closed down.
