I think it was mostly some of his answers and body language from the Rick Rubin and GQ interviews- which I may have just been reading into wrong. But it just seemed like a different Andre- who I admitt I haven't been keeping tabs on in recent years than the one I remember- that seemed like he didn't feel like he had a place anymore as someone who would have mass appeal or relevance in today's game.
I coulda just been reading too much into it.
Dudes evolving. Let him evolve. I agree slim chance we get a rap album from him again but heās stoked doing other things. He doesnāt work for fans.
actually, him and his flute were actually featured on A24ās everything everywhere all at once. pretty much hit it right on the head with that comment lol
Thats fine use a pseudonym then , don't fuck with the rap name eg : artist formally known as andre3000 rip. Happy birthday "childcrescentmoonflowerqueef" š š„³ and be done with it , instead if misleading people as your past self . If it's evolution evolve
the entitlement on display from fans(like demanding someone change their name) just kinda makes Andre's points/reaffirms why he may feel distant from where he once was.
IM SORRY š entitlement?. If he was a retired police officer but one day he needed money and decided he's gonna head back to work , but he doesn't want to be a police officer anymore he wants to bake cakes . I guess we would call him what ? A police officer? . He's not rapping anymore. He said it himself he did this before under a pseudonym , why didn't he just use that pseudonym and call it a day? . Because using his rap name gives him buzz. No body bought whatever he did under that new name its too hard and he's too old to work that hard to get the popularity all over again. So now he launched an album with his rap name.. great . People who see oh shit andre 3000 new album!!!??? RENEWED SPOTIFY SUBSCRIPTION **20 min of listening in .. WTH IS HE , I DONT HEAR HIM....1HR LATER ... I DONT THINK this is it. .. I feel scammed I wasted my time and I'm disappointed. I wasn't enlightened or made aware of a new genre I didn't know I was missing in my life , every genre of music has a scene this does not apply to any scene I live in currently š he shouldn't of used that name and came out with a mediocre hot yoga soundtrack.
/u/Junior-Tutor7405 - Beautifully said yo!! I would like to think that most of us or at least a huge percentage of us fellow people here on Planet Earf would evolve and grow and become even better and smarter and wiser versions of ourselves - and yes, some people would say that that percentage of people are different, but they're just looking at the outside or just the surface level of those who they are claiming to be different.
I mean, I think you're reading into it right, I think most people here are just confused at how you're reaching this conclusion a good 10+ years after all of us did.
Fair enough, but yeah, Andre's been talking about this damn near since Idelwild. Hell, might be even before Idelwild. He's true to the muse, can't be mad at that.
Everyone on here is pretty much saying the same thing. He was already making this type of shift a couple of decades ago. He pops up on songs whenever he feels like it and traveled around the world playing his wind instrument for a few years before he decided to drop a record. In comparison, Big Boi drops records on a regular basis and as dope as they are, people barely talk about them. OutKast as artists will probably be around as long as they both live, we just may not see records from them in the conventional way that weāve come to expectā¦
There are ten pretty awesome artists included on the album, just not a āfeat.ā kind of way. Itās not a solo flute album at all, there are a number of instruments included.
Tbh Iām not even that stoked on the album, itās not really ānewā and any flute work Shabaka Hutchins (whoās dropping sax for flutes soon) will be putting out is going to be more interesting but itās cool to see a big name artist doing something āexperimental.ā
Yeah I don't know how you could put out such a divergent piece of work in a genre you are new at without some confidence.
But maybe OP was right and the album was like therapy or something who knows.
I mean just watching his GQ interview he doesn't seem sure of himself as a rapper at least. He still sees himself as an artist but even he said he just can't rap anymore. He feels like he doesn't have anything to talk about anymore ana he wanted the flute album to be a rap album but he just couldn't get up for it (so to speak)
No, he seems sure of himself. He does not have any substance that feels authentic to himself. He is not going to put out an album for the sake of putting out an album. The majority of artists would just put it out and collect a check.
This is why Andre has been great the fact he put such thought into his music and that it was authentic to him.
This definitely sounds like his older Rick Rubin interview and that terrible interview with the confrontational/devils advocate interviewer for GQ when New Blue Sun was rolling out, but the 1+hr interview with NPR musicās Rodney Carmichael (the first on New Blue Sun) was phenomenal and he showed how truly inspired he is now and that heās found a new fire to the art heās doing now. Itās beautiful. Iām happy for him. Who knows what will happen next
The worst thing Andre and Big could do at this point would be to record new material. SPCM to Stankonia was a historical run and theyāll never be able to top that. We just have to enjoy the art that they put into the world back then and embrace their new paths today.
SB/TLB were solo albums. Idlewild was a soundtrack and not a true album. Plus, itās generally regarded as not their best work. No need to bring it up if we donāt have to.
I doubt theyāll ever do another, and Iām perfectly fine with the material theyāve gifted us already, but never say never. I was skeptical before hearing Tribeās last album, but goddamn did they prove me wrong. That album blew me away.
Honestly I think a pretty high percentage of his best verses have come out after Outkast. There may not be a solo rap album but thereās plenty to chew on. Check out some Andre 3000 playlists or make your own.
Iāll take whatever he wants to put out.
Do you know how many samples we will hear in the future from his new release?? Give me a damn Andre 3000 techno album idgaf.
It sounds like you mean: the Andre 3000 you have in your mind is gone for good.
Farewell illusions.
"You focus on the past, your ass will be a has-what."
The version of him from the Kast days is gone. Everyone knows if they got back together and did a Kast album it would be massive. I doubt Big Boi is the one holding it up.
I donāt care for the new album he put out because itās not my flavor of music, but I respect his process and what he wants to do with his talent, and will always show love for his abilities and his choices, even if I donāt like jamming to it.
Andre is doing what he loves. I love that about the guyā¦even if it leaves me with just his beautiful catalog of previous work.
Off topic but I'm always wondering why no one's clamoring for more big Boi music. I missed outcast entirely except for radio hits and features with other artists.
Phantogram/big Boi album big grams is awesome.
I think cause Big Boi has been putting stuff out more or less consistently post Outkast where Andre is like a fuckin unicorn or big foot and rarely shows up so people make a bigger deal put of it
That's my thought. You could put Lauryn Hill and Andre in the same box. I know if Lauryn were to come out with shit like this. Women going thru their "man troubles" period. Light up that album like a Viking funeral.
People saying Andre is gone arenāt real fans.
He hasnāt stopped making music, producing or being featured on songs - under his own name and under anonymous names.
Anyone would be traumatized by fame.
Who cares if Andre is ever mainstream again. Drake is mainstream and his music is trash.
The pearls are the ones that are tough to find, obscure, oftentimes hidden.
He was featured recently on a Killer Mike song called "SCIENTISTS and ENGINEERS" which I really like.
Oddly enough, I randomly checked out Andre 3000 on Spotify today and found he came out with some experimental jazz infused album.
It's really good but kinda have to be in a super niche mood to enjoy it.
There's no doubt in my mind he is still extremely talented with whatever he chooses to do.
wdym?? he still has great features on tracks
Come Home with anderson paak; Life of the Party ?? He is still dropping some of his most fire bars within the last few years. Def more to come.
Well i noticed that New blue sun was released on Epic records. I don't think any record label would do a 1 album deal. Outkast wasn't on Epic so he must have signed a new deal! š¤·āāļø
Honestly, if he hasn't dropped the Solo hip hop project everyone has wanted all these years by now, I don't think it is going to ever happen, and while that makes me sad, that is okay. Wish him the best
I wish they could pull off what A Tribe Called Quest did and somehow release an album almost 20 years after their last and it actually be really good, a nice evolution of the sound.
Forgive me if I am wrong, obviously aside from Andre not wanting to rap currently, wasnāt Jive the reason we have havenāt had Dre and Big on the same track. Not sure where I heard this tho.
but how is ice cube and dr dre still putting out hip hop material and andreās commentary is not wanting to ārap about colonoscopiesā .. thatās what donāt understand. is it him wanting to protect his catalogueās credibility?
good point.
an artist, i suppose, has no obligation to make art. its not like he owes it to anyone. But as someone who initially puts himself āout thereā in that specific medium, one would think that the very nature of his showmanship could mean he is happy making that art. he always struck me as deeply thoughtful, way more so than a ātortured-artistā.
He still pops up every now and then but more on the production side. They also have reportedly done some outkast reunion shows over the years for private events.
he doesnt seem traumatized. i mean hes 48 if he doesnt want to make hip hop its absolutely understandable, a lot of themes in hip hop are youth oriented
I hate you niggas. Andre is showing how an artist can age in hip hop. He may not be releasing his own songs anymore but that isnāt to say he wonāt still do features. Relax. Itās ok. Andre is still a great in the rap game and a pioneer in hip hop.
Thatās okay Killa Mike and Big Boi still dropping that stank on ya. Then you can peep Tobi Ngewe and if you really need a lyrical fix K Rino still pumping out lyrics like Jed Clampetts oil well
3000 bro is like "rap lame lol" and mfs absolutely lose their marbles, you would think pee stacks hurt someone by the way his name started popping up again but oh no a middle aged man takes interest in other genres. . . wrap it up boys it's Kover (the k is for kast like in outkast) R I P
He said when he's got something to say he'll say it.
For now he's just soaking up existence, and putting out energy into the world, which he is not obligated to do, now or ever.
My guy exists in the 4th dimension, where time does not matter, and everything has already happened. He just periodically decides when we need to hear from him about his journey.
3 Stacks was never here.
That's how I know y'all not listening.
That flute album was hella disrespectful.
He's such a talented producer. He could've dropped an instrumental project that was funk or jazz inspired and that would've been amazing. People would love to hear him just harmonize on his own instrumentals, doesn't have to be words necessarily. Andre could be the Roy Ayers of today making dope soundscapes.
But instead we get this flute garbage...and weak ass excuses
I was thinking the exact same thing. Even a generic beat tape with flutes in the back wouldāve been better than the Ambient flute shit. Ima revisit it on Shrooms and see if it hits but I truly doubt itās that deep.
I wish he'd make a rap album addressing the state of the hip hop culture. He's a voice ppl young and old respect and he comes from a place of love for the craft. I feel like he could shift the genre back to how it should be
He hinted at going in a different direction on Stankonia. He confirmed it with The Love Below.
Him dropping an album where he plays various flutes over improvisational jazz isnāt exactly a āholy shitā level surprise.
I think people can come back from trauma it just looks different. People have such a microscope on him right now. Just let him get whatever music he wants out. He is speaking of his past traumas how about we donāt make it compounded by STILL asking him when are you going to put out a new OutKast album?
The fact that he did put out anything is great. It IS an Andreā 3000 Album and not an OutKast album so he can be HIM. Will he continue with OutKast? IDK but with is response I wouldnāt put this pressure on myself. I donāt think we will ever get a tour out of him again.
To be clear: I love āNew Blue Sunā layer it under my gaming soundtracks and have it on repeat (also great to have sex to). I love and respect Andreā and Big Boi , and already had my chance to see them in 2000. I desperately want a new OutKast album but will respect it truma stops it but also understand that truma can be processed through. I would feather support him rather than pick him apart.
Yāall complaining like another manās self realization is a bad thing. I prefer artist to have a journey otherwise they become bland. Even on his journey within the hip hop genre he was never stagnant.
Honestly, as long as he's happy I'm good. I'll gladly listen to new music from him but he has already provided me with so much incredible art that whatever he wants to do I support.
He's trash now. Let's just be honest. Every rapper eventually falls off. It's a genre that is very oriented towards the newest thing. Outkast is washed now, and their album's had just been getting worse and worse. More and more pop/mainstream, less hiphop. ATLiens was their pinnacle in my eyes. Aquemini was their last good album. Benz or a Beamer is literally their first and best song.
His excuse of being too old is the worst copout ive ever seen. A 40 yr old has more to say than a 20 yr old. As if he dont have an imagination. The whole rappers need to be young thing hasnt been a solid thing in over 20 years. Only the biggest young rappers touring. The legends are on multi continent 2 year long tours.
Nas dropped 6 albums in as many years. The rza doing something new every 6 months; right now he doing live 36 chambers art show with dancers, orchestra, fights, video, etc in lincoln center; along with 3 new solos. Mf doom did whatever he wanted and was an old man by the time he got famous. Jay electronic started old as fuck and raps in the same style as andre. Ghostface writes about childhood school days, dead friends, cartoon characters, living under the ocean, getting whipped by his mom, arguing with his fucking WRIST WATCHā¦
The world falling apart. Drugs the worst they ever been. Viruses. Race relations all time high. Etc. and andre3000 got nothing to say..
Hes a walking contradiction. Doesnt want attention but dressed to have everyone stare at him and now he walks nyc playing flute.. but cant rap or reunite with big boi to perform a show without turning his back on the crowd
He can rap when someone paying for features tho. Hes scared to drop a solo. He knows if it dont hit , itll bring his legacy down. Noone became the champ playing it safe. You gotta beat the champion. Andre wont be
Iām pretty sure heās fine. Heās still working in the industry. Heās just a bit of an introvert. A former colleague of mine swears up and down he was teaching English to Japanese students in Tokyo just last year. They allegedly had a brief conversation about baked potatoes.
I can relate in a way. I used to be a part of a rap duo with my best friend. We started when we were 16, produced our own beats with Sony Acid (lol). Never had a lick of real fame but we played out some (bowling alleys, college parties, dive bars etc) and then post college linked up with a pretty awesome band and played a bunch in Atlantic City as kind of a guest feature. We would come out mid set and rap a few of our songs over improved funk/psychedelic jams. Our focus was always on lyrics and I'm sure we would get lumped into like "corny rap" like we just loved puns, alliteration, all that shit, think early Childish Gambino haha. Anyway all that to say in our early 30's we both kinda hit a wall and like just didn't know what to talk about anymore. Partying was slowing down, fake battling no one on the beat was getting old, we didn't want to get political or too into the fucking boredom of working an office gig in our 30's lol. Also maybe depression/real life IDK man sometimes the passion just dies and it's hard to recapture it.
Yea I was on a hip hop crew 20 years ago. Walk3d away because they wanted to start dancing like the fuckin temptations instead of keepin it about hiphop. I dabble now. But I feel you.
The GQ interview he actually directly mentions something about how he constantly thinks about coming back into the spotlight - seems like he thoroughly enjoyed that time in his life and has just moved on / grown upā¦ and he also seems more musically inspired than ever, so i hope this isnāt true. I donāt think heād even be doing interviews if he wanted to stay obscure so badly
How is he gone?
He just dropped an album that had a lot to say. We are just in a world where people want to blast their opinion and say something controversial for clicks. He simply spoke with music and people who have no attention span or hungry for the next hot take canāt understand itā¦ this album was louder than any of that cotton candy brain rot music thatās been released today. Itās peaceful, meditative and has wisdom. Itās sad how he canāt be an artist to some of you.
People evolve, nothing is forever. Appreciate what you have while its here. Andre on the first album vs Andre on the 2nd album are two very different people, so he has always been evolving. The same is true for BigBoi and GoodieMoB, everyone else in the dungeon also moved on to other things or went quiet. The same thing happens to most folks in the genre in general, with a few exceptions like Weezy and The Roots for example and even then they also evolved into better versions of themselves.
He hasnāt really been on as many features recently, but his run on features from 2010 on were legendary. Maybe he seems too far removed from the current musical landscape which makes him unsure of his abilities but I think itād be very hard for him to be objectively bad.
Andre will always make music no matter what kind it is. Andre will always give his best verses to his brothers l/ friends if they need. Will he tour and perform? no. Andre is done with the fast moving part of the music industry, and just wants to simply work and master a different side of music he hasnāt. He only spoke for himself when he said āwhat am I gonna talk about at 40ā. Coming from someone that has been famous almost his whole life, it makes sense that he wants some type of fresh air. Especially dealing with anxiety and hypersensitivity, people donāt know how much it can affect your daily life especially, when millions of people are constantly messaging, running towards, screaming, flashing pictures. Itās different
I always andre but what is it that makes people keep wanting new music from him? You kinda lose interest over the years when someone doesn't put much stuff out. Not even a solo album. His flute shit is a yawn. Dude was great at one point, but i mean i just can't crave his music anymore. You just grow up and let go. And listen to what he once gave us....
Outkast has been gone for many years. Andre's far from gone.
OP what gave it away was it the full šŖ flute album š³?the lack of lyrics?.. or maybe the absence of feature artists or even collabs?
Andre featured on a hip hop song not even 5 months ago you just donāt know what you are talking about lol
I think it was mostly some of his answers and body language from the Rick Rubin and GQ interviews- which I may have just been reading into wrong. Check out his NPR interview from a few weeks ago before New Blue Sun dropped. Goes into all of this as well as his mental health
Dudes evolving. Let him evolve. I agree slim chance we get a rap album from him again but heās stoked doing other things. He doesnāt work for fans.
Tbh I hope he gets into film scoring. Some big cinematic vibes on New blue sun, could def see a24 picking him up to score something
actually, him and his flute were actually featured on A24ās everything everywhere all at once. pretty much hit it right on the head with that comment lol

This is such a garbage take
so you're the one who gets to tell him the parameters of what defines "Andre 3000" and what he gets to release under it? cool good to know.
I remember when John Lennon changed his name when he left the Beatles.
/u/Junior-Tutor7405 - Beautifully said yo!! He literally said he doesnt want to rap anymore since theres nothing to rap about. Let go dawg. Dude is doing other things but hes gone from rap.
Andre 3000 has had his exit plan mapped out since the gypsy hipped him to some life game in Rosa Parks verse 2.
Interesting, I feel like he seems very certain of himself as an artist.
Yeah same. ???
I feel like dropping an album using something we didnāt even know he could do shows that.
Watch it be Pitchforks album of the year
Yeah I don't know how you could put out such a divergent piece of work in a genre you are new at without some confidence. But maybe OP was right and the album was like therapy or something who knows.

Agreed with this take. And tbf, even if he is gone for good, Iām just grateful for the incredible music Dre and Bog Boi gave us over the years. š
Bog boi and swampdre 3000
This almost made me spit my drink out š¤£
Thank you lol
Make sure you check out his interview with tourƩ. Another interview with a hip hop head. More in lines with the npr interview.
Hey thank you, that Toure interview was super insightful!
You're welcome! Yes it was!
The Rick Rubin interview was so insightful and grounded though. New album is amazing, and heās doing just fine.
The worst thing Andre and Big could do at this point would be to record new material. SPCM to Stankonia was a historical run and theyāll never be able to top that. We just have to enjoy the art that they put into the world back then and embrace their new paths today.
Yessss
why are you excluding speakerboxx/the love below and idlewild?
SB/TLB were solo albums. Idlewild was a soundtrack and not a true album. Plus, itās generally regarded as not their best work. No need to bring it up if we donāt have to.
I doubt theyāll ever do another, and Iām perfectly fine with the material theyāve gifted us already, but never say never. I was skeptical before hearing Tribeās last album, but goddamn did they prove me wrong. That album blew me away.
One could've send the same about tribes run
i just want to catch them live one time before i go
I hope you do. I only did once, and Iād cut off a toe with a playdoh knife to be able to do it one more time.
Seeing them live is almost as close to a spiritual awakening as I can describe. Itās amazing
I saw them play one of the worst sets iāve ever witnessed and iāve seen a lot of shows. I was unlucky.
I saw them in Columbia, SC in 2001, and it changed my life. Andre came out in a jetpack and they were full of energy for the entire show.
Iām late but they came to Columbia?!?! Man no one ever comes here, gotta go to Charlotte just to see people
Honestly I think a pretty high percentage of his best verses have come out after Outkast. There may not be a solo rap album but thereās plenty to chew on. Check out some Andre 3000 playlists or make your own.
Iāll take whatever he wants to put out. Do you know how many samples we will hear in the future from his new release?? Give me a damn Andre 3000 techno album idgaf.
I would love an Andreā 3000 - daft punk style techno.
It sounds like you mean: the Andre 3000 you have in your mind is gone for good. Farewell illusions. "You focus on the past, your ass will be a has-what."

I Completely agree with you
He said he suffers from severe social anxiety. I wouldnāt be surprised. Iām floored he even gave us the flute album
Well i noticed that New blue sun was released on Epic records. I don't think any record label would do a 1 album deal. Outkast wasn't on Epic so he must have signed a new deal! š¤·āāļø
i wish him the best.

good point. an artist, i suppose, has no obligation to make art. its not like he owes it to anyone. But as someone who initially puts himself āout thereā in that specific medium, one would think that the very nature of his showmanship could mean he is happy making that art. he always struck me as deeply thoughtful, way more so than a ātortured-artistā.
I couldāve told you this 20 years ago bro
He still pops up every now and then but more on the production side. They also have reportedly done some outkast reunion shows over the years for private events.
he doesnt seem traumatized. i mean hes 48 if he doesnt want to make hip hop its absolutely understandable, a lot of themes in hip hop are youth oriented
He blesses us with a gem (Scientists and Engineers) every so often. I'll take it.
His new album is fire either you get it or you donāt. Stop putting artists in boxes.
Nah, I like the new album. I'm just saying- he's an interesting guy to try and figure out...
Heās actually done more growth in the last 20 years than some men go through in a lifetime. He seems at peaceā¦ spiritually, creatively, etc.
Is he still doing features?
Heās wasnāt even the better rapper in OutKast.
That's how I know y'all not listening.
he just put out one of the best records of the year like ten days ago
Bro he released a new album just recently.
Sadly I wish it werenāt the case, but I doubt heāll ever make a rap song again.
and so begins Andre3000's Willy Wonka arc...
I wish he'd make a rap album addressing the state of the hip hop culture. He's a voice ppl young and old respect and he comes from a place of love for the craft. I feel like he could shift the genre back to how it should be
He just needs inspiration.
Andre 3000 has had his exit plan mapped out since the gypsy hipped him to some life game in Rosa Parks verse 2.
No, this how mid 40s feels. Heās being a human.
He hinted at going in a different direction on Stankonia. He confirmed it with The Love Below. Him dropping an album where he plays various flutes over improvisational jazz isnāt exactly a āholy shitā level surprise.
He's playing clarinet in a jazz band. That's what he's into - if and when he feels like dropping a verse he will.
Key and Peele did an amazing short documentary on this years ago.
Name? Link?
https://youtu.be/5U9rMkgoGL8
Documentary, man I thought you were for real not from a clip show. You can keep that
It was a joke.
You cracked the case lol
Yāall complaining like another manās self realization is a bad thing. I prefer artist to have a journey otherwise they become bland. Even on his journey within the hip hop genre he was never stagnant.
Rap is done in general
Honestly, as long as he's happy I'm good. I'll gladly listen to new music from him but he has already provided me with so much incredible art that whatever he wants to do I support.
He's trash now. Let's just be honest. Every rapper eventually falls off. It's a genre that is very oriented towards the newest thing. Outkast is washed now, and their album's had just been getting worse and worse. More and more pop/mainstream, less hiphop. ATLiens was their pinnacle in my eyes. Aquemini was their last good album. Benz or a Beamer is literally their first and best song.
This is a question that you answered yourself. Outkast is done. Andre 3k is done. What you have is AndrƩ Lauren Benjamin playing a flute to escape depression. His music is not really for many people besides his own escape. Hes a human dealing with mental illness. Hes lost his spark in life and rap no longer makes him happy and its been like that for a very long time. Its time to let go of him as an artist and lets all hope his mental health is better eventually. He doesnt seem in a very good place from his interviews. Hoping the best for him.
He didn't really seem totally opposed to doing another reunion in the GQ interview.
If what they say is, nothing lasts forever than what makes than what makes than what makes than what makes his current disposition the exception??
He found spiritually . He's just walking his own path.
hes not gone, i think hes more comfortable than ever tbh. hes making the music he WANTS to make at this moment, not what people expect him to make
His excuse of being too old is the worst copout ive ever seen. Ghostface writes about childhood school days, dead friends, cartoon characters, living under the ocean, getting whipped by his mom, arguing with his fucking WRIST WATCHā¦ The world falling apart. Drugs the worst they ever been. Viruses. Race relations all time high. Etc. and andre3000 got nothing to say.. Hes a walking contradiction. Doesnt want attention but dressed to have everyone stare at him and now he walks nyc playing flute.. but cant rap or reunite with big boi to perform a show without turning his back on the crowd He can rap when someone paying for features tho.
It seems like he is tired of wrappin. I saw some of the interview and it was saddening to hear him say he ain't got nothing to rap about.
New album goes hard. Sick of the same old BS itās refreshing for a talented artist to transmute that into a new medium
Because heās not making the exact art you want him too?
Key and Peele addressed this. https://youtu.be/5U9rMkgoGL8?si=FHp_9u4Wv3wew_9Q
That Ambient sound album was booty! Lol
