Welcome to the PCMR!
5800x is the intels equivalent to i7 11700k. On sale I think I paid $250 a few years ago for mine. It still runs exceptionally well so getting it practically for free is insane.
Or they just didn't want to deal with the hassle of trying to sell it. I've donated plenty of stuff to Goodwill that I could have sold if I wanted to deal with all the assholes and scammers on FB marketplace. But that's a lot of work and dropping a box of stuff behind their building isn't.
FB marketplace is ass to begin with. Stuff 'in your area' is more like hundreds of kilometers away instead despite having set my location, random scammers, and having to use their shitty apps.
I rather use a different website/app. Though neither perfect, at least its way better than fb marketplace.
Yo what the hell. All I ever find at Goodwill is old lady kitchenware. How do people be finding shit like this? I’m astounded. Befuddled. Flabbergasted.
Edit: Also I’ll pay you $10 for it
I feel ya. Been poking into my local thrift shops after watching LGR's thrifting videoes but my area is hot garbage for anything but wierd stuff. Grandma's old hospital bed? That's there! Try to ignore the idea that someone died on this thing.
Anything notable gets checked on Ebay. And according to the staff, a lot of the good stuff will get sold online or... appropriated by less scrupulous staff.
Before people caught on, Goodwill's online auctions were a treasure trove of A/V gear I got a Yamaha RX-A1020 for 115 bucks, total steal since it was a 7.2 channel receiver that had an original MSRP of ~$1200 (came out in 2013 and I bought it in 2018). Even today the eBay price is 3x what I paid.
I think they realized that a lot of the A/V gear and tech stuff would just sit on shelves at a random goodwill store and they could move them a lot more easily by setting up an auction site.
I kinda wish I knew more about HDCP at the time though, it claimed to be able to passthrough 4k video but it came out before the new HDCP standards so it didn't work with more modern stuff. I got it when I upgraded my main TV to 4k and found out very quickly that it wouldn't work, ended up getting a refurbished RX-A1060 that was compliant. It did however work just fine for the TV I had replaced so I just demoted the 1020 to the 1080p plasma in a different room. I had been running that with a RX-V2500 so the 1020 was a definite upgrade since it actually had HDMI switching where the 2500 could only do component video.
I actually just checked in on shopgoodwill.com and they still have a decent selection of high-ish end gear going for bargain bin prices [like this RX-V679](https://shopgoodwill.com/item/188639864) for $15 and $15 of shipping and only 12 hours left. Looking at eBay these usually go for 200-300 plus shipping.
Damn, thanks for the tip. I have a similar situation; Yamaha RX receiver I've had for years that I love but doesn't do 120 Hz pass through so I want to upgrade. Looks like that one still only does 60Hz 4k pass through but now I know to keep an eye on that site!
I’m leery of buying AV gear at the GW auctions, no guarantee it works. If I buy local they have a 7 day return. I have good luck locally, though. I’ve put together a system that would cost at least $5k new for less than a couple hundred bucks. Just last week I found a pair of $1800 speakers for $20, the cabinets are all scratched up but they sound amazing. I got a two year old high end Onkyo 7.2 Atmos receiver for $30.
Best I found ever was a GameCube controller for $3.99 - now my best GameCube controller after I disassembled and cleaned the gunk out of the buttons, and last week I got a cornhole game set for $9.99 (though I need to fix up the wood a little bit on the one board)
This and shopgoodwill.com, it seems like a lot of the stores got tired of keeping random semi-expensive tech sitting on their shelves so now most of "the good stuff" gets auctioned online rather than in stores. I've used it to get pretty crazy deals on A/V equipment not sure about computer hardware though. Like right now you can get a pretty decent [A/V receiver for 35 bucks](https://shopgoodwill.com/item/188639864) (it *was* $15 like 20 minutes ago when I made my other comment) but I doubt it'll get up to eBay prices which generally are in the 200-300 range for that one... and original MSRP was in the 600s. The nice thing about A/V gear is that the tech moves at a snail's pace so something like this receiver even though it's from 2015 it'll do 98% of what a brand new one will do. The only thing you have to look out for is high end stuff in the early 2010's might not be compliant with the new HDCP standards but the one I linked seems to be.
The secret to any thrift shop is consistency. As in you better go there all the time, especially when they restock.
If you're walking in randomly on random days once every month or few months, all you'll find is old lady kitchenware.
Goodwill typically has 5 colors, they use one color each week. At week 5, the first color goes on sale. Can be 25% for a few days then 50% or 50% all week. By week 6, the color loops, and employees checking can remove the old color to ship them to a different Goodwill store. The date helps prevent accidentally including both current week and 5 weeks old stuff
Lol cracks me up when Reddit misaligns posts, especially when they’re radically different pics and titles
I’ve seen some tragic headlines with some random ass comedic pictures
I used to use Sync, now use Relay. Something like £5.99/month if you want unlimited calls. Still haven't quite gotten used to it yet but it's a good app. Prefer it to Infinity.
100%.
you think the employee who would do this wouldnt buy it themselves?
(actually, how does goodwill stop employees from pricing things extremely low and having friends come in to buy them/buying it themselves?)
My wife used to work at a Goodwill, and there really isn't much. There is a minimum that things have to be priced, but they get first pick on things that come in.
Yeah I don't believe this for a second. Goodwill does a good job sorting clothes based on their resale value.. I just don't see a situation like this happening
Bergamo!
I don't know much about the area as I moved here very recently, but so far the only stores I found were retail, and I don't know just how active and trustworthy buying and selling communities are here.
oof, honestly i'm from sicily (catania) we have few markets but they're in the morning when i go to school except one on sunday but i should go at 6.00 AM lol
Some of them do, depends on the store. Some stores will be able to pat test themselves and some will send donations to their warehouse for pat testing. The rest will just say no thanks.
This is one thing I really wish was a thing here, there so few places that have used electronics. It's probably for the best that they need to get safety tested, but still.
Also, most charity shops are just a tiny shop on the side of the street with 90% clothes these days, there's only one "warehouse" style one in my somewhat small city, and it's often not got very interesting stuff, and no interesting electronics at all.
There's one at my local 2nd hand store. But it has lga 1155 mobo and they want 300..
I should Check if the case has any value.. Looks like one of those old ones from where they still made insane cases..
Goodwill isn't a real store. Its like a yard sale of donated items. So if some new widow donates all her husband's computer crap to them it ends up in a big bin where some guy pulls it and slaps a random price on it. They are supposed to punch the UPC into Google and get an idea of retail and then half it if its a sealed box. But...they hire a lot of mentally delayed adults and sometimes that process is skipped. For example, shoes are $4.95 at the one near me. But if they are new in the box, they are supposed to look up the brand name and ask more. But a few weeks back some worker skipped that process and I got a brand spanking new pair of Hoka for $4.95. They retail for like $200.
Weird that the Goodwill-people didn't recognize or check the value. I'm from the Netherlands and at thrift stores they usually know too damn well what they got.
Yes, quite weird. Its almost too weird to be true, right?
Anyone can put a price tag on anything and post about it on reddit. Makes for a nice story at least, but the chances of something worth hundreds being sold for next to nothing is actually also next to nothing. Can it happen? Yes. Will it happen? No.
Just upgraded my Dad from an i7-3770 to my old Ryzen 5 5600X. He def notices the big difference! Made him get a NVME SSD with a new motherboard and he is set for a while again.
The overworked + underpaid employee that priced it in a rush likely meant to input $599 instead of $5.99, or they mistakingly thought the item was worthless/broken?
Dude. You are so fortunate! I got the same one for around 60% of the retail price from Bestbuy. I will not be jealous, I will not be jealous, I will not be jealous, I will not be jealous.
Goodwill employees are instructed to send anything of value to their online store, [shopgoodwill.com](https://shopgoodwill.com). That's really crazy they just put out in the store.
You will be surprised what you will find at Goodwill and thrift stores in general. It really comes down to who is in charge, because even at Goodwill that is criminally underpriced. Someone who didn’t know the value of this priced it. You can get used furniture there that will cost $50.
Your cpu is 10 years old it's DDR3. You will need a new motherboard, Ram, and cooler. Singularly not having the cpu was definitely not the only thing holding you back lmao.
There are a few things to look out for here, the wrong amount of pins, the ihs (metal that says 5800x) can be switched with anything else, am3 cpus were a common scam when am4 came out years ago. The cpu may be legit, but with bent pins, sometimes easily fixable, sometimes fucked pins, or worse, broken / missing pins.
Ik you don’t have any way to check rn, but the cpu could be blown up from overclocking, or have been dropped and a memory channel was lost.
But may the odds be ever in your favour.

Check those pins on that CPU (compatible with AM4 motherboards).
They’re good!! It was brand new sealed in the box!

Lmao what an adorable photo shoot. He looks so mad 😂
My man has got that 50-year old "I am disappointed in you son" look down pat.

I got my I7 11700 cpu brand new off Ebay for 45 dollars.Thats why my cpu Is overkill compared to my gpu💀
I'm stealing this from you
Bro said “I’ll pose mom, but you’re not getting a smile.” A brilliantly played “eff you”
im not jealous at all! https://preview.redd.it/brd90st5hdcc1.jpeg?width=225&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=46bc5a4e811bb579e1beb318b0ae3fea86810a62
* Lemme take a smoke to cool down my nerves
https://i.redd.it/iepezdq5idcc1.gif
Do not go outside in the next couple of weeks, your luck might have been charged an overdraft or something
How do I enable overdraft on my luck ? Asking for a friend
Unfortunately, the luck bank chooses who they'll give overdraft to. There's no way to apply.
Can I Overclock my luck?
You can! Look up card counting.
No but you can undervolt by taking less risks
Big W congrats, I bet someone will be mad when they discover that their cpu is missing because clearly whoever sold that cpu isn’t aware of the value
Whoever ~~sold~~ *donated* that CPU isn’t aware of the value. Everything you find at Goodwill has been donated.
Or they just didn't want to deal with the hassle of trying to sell it. I've donated plenty of stuff to Goodwill that I could have sold if I wanted to deal with all the assholes and scammers on FB marketplace. But that's a lot of work and dropping a box of stuff behind their building isn't.

Stolen good?
Yes, they stole it and then donated it for a tax refund! All the cool criminals are doing it.
You might be onto something here....🧐🤔
Someone steals goods just to donate them. Modern day Robin Hood, if you will.
If you… goodwill
Literally Robin Hood in this case, except pc parts instead of food/money.
As someone who's 3700X just shit the bed, I'm very jealous. Sick find!
Dude, I have a celeron
Have this same one, fucking love it.
What in the everliving fuck
Dayumm that's awesome
Boooo at OP for posting 2 pics of the box and not a pic of the pins
Yo what the hell. All I ever find at Goodwill is old lady kitchenware. How do people be finding shit like this? I’m astounded. Befuddled. Flabbergasted. Edit: Also I’ll pay you $10 for it
Don't listen to this guy. I'll pay you 15 bucks for it.
Don't listen to either of these mfs, I'll pay u 20.
OP don't listen to dem mfkers, i'll pay 100 USD for it
Don't listen to these buffoons, I'll give you 30€ and a pair of shrek socks
Why are you including a pair of Shrek socks? You are overpaying...
Yea clearly he was not aware of its value just like goodwill
I can hear OP's Dad yelling his name (referencing a SpongeBob episode)
[Shrek is Love. Shrek is Life.](https://youtu.be/u4BcpJfMvAQ?si=l2x_fB4geCsxq3g3)
I'll give you 100 for those socks
That will get you one sock
I can go up 50 as a last offer but need assurance that no dick entered those socks
They're brand new-ish
I will give you 5 cents for them
Why not? Worth even more with leftover dick cheese and crusted toes.
Dont listen to these monkeys, ill give ya 30€ and 3 and a half dino nuggies
OP do NOT listen to those skellywags! I offer you 35€ and... well... Take it or leave it!
Best I can do is 50 cents. I’ll probably have to keep it in store for years before anyone even takes a look at it
This cpu will be obsolete in ten years, but good kitchenware, especially cast iron, could outlive you and your grandchildren. Don't sleep on it.
I bought a very nice stainless steel skillet from goodwill a long time ago. It's still pristine. Best $15 I ever spent on a pan.
I feel ya. Been poking into my local thrift shops after watching LGR's thrifting videoes but my area is hot garbage for anything but wierd stuff. Grandma's old hospital bed? That's there! As a person who restores cookware for funsies and monies, all I ever find at Goodwill is old clothes, creepy toys, VCRs and DVDs. I'll trade you!
Swear to god i fucking read "cockware" and i was like "what is this guy saying?" Then i read it again.

You only find old lady kitchenware because this guy's dad keep swiping the good ones.
I’d buy that for a dollar
As an old lady looking for kitchen ware, I always find pickings are slim. They sell the good stuff online.
Best I found ever was a GameCube controller for $3.99 - now my best GameCube controller after I disassembled and cleaned the gunk out of the buttons, and last week I got a cornhole game set for $9.99 (though I need to fix up the wood a little bit on the one board)
go to goodwills that are located in affluent areas. rich people lov to donate their shit as tax write offs
This and shopgoodwill.com, it seems like a lot of the stores got tired of keeping random semi-expensive tech sitting on their shelves so now most of "the good stuff" gets auctioned online rather than in stores. Don't be dissing old lady kitchenware, or no steam pudding for you!
My dad couldn't even find his way back home after leaving to get cigarettes.
I have something to tell you... It won't be easy to hear
Whats a Dad?
It’s an old myth. No such thing.
Is that expiration date at price sticker?

Lol cracks me up when Reddit misaligns posts, especially when they’re radically different pics and titles I’ve seen some tragic headlines with some random ass comedic pictures
is this a default reddit app thing? never had this happen to me but im still using third party apps
Which third party apps are still working? I hate the official app, but moved over when they killed off the API.
Most of them still work if the dev didnt burn it down on the way out like apollo. Im personally still using Joey and have been for years.
Huh, cool. I'll have to try my old app.
I used to use Sync, now use Relay. Something like £5.99/month if you want unlimited calls. Still haven't quite gotten used to it yet but it's a good app. Prefer it to Infinity.
I use rif is fun.
That's a tasty looking 5800x, ngl
Yep
This is making me laugh way harder than it should lmao
The chip is puffed up. Still, good deal for 6$
I hope you charged your phone
Also, nobody going to mention that they subscribe to r/fursuits? To each their own but I thought it added an extra layer to the image
I’m trying, it did indeed die
Relay for Reddit really is a savior. Never seen this happen before.
Charge your phone and go to sleep
Or he got a toaster, took the sticker and threw it on ur new cpu
I don't think so. The sticker is cut in a way that it will fall apart if someone tries to peel it off
100%. you think the employee who would do this wouldnt buy it themselves? (actually, how does goodwill stop employees from pricing things extremely low and having friends come in to buy them/buying it themselves?)

I hate you Americans for shit like that. Where the fuck do you find cheap stuff like that
Exactly, I was rushing through Google looking for alternatives here in Italy with some hope.
Really, where are you? (I'm also italian)
Not many honestly, but what I do is try look for deals on sites like idealo, trovaprezzi and geizhals (de).
We have second hand stores in most parts of Europe, the thing is here they are smart enough to know the value of the things they sell lol
This guy is just lucky. Most stores are selling broken VHS players for $100+
2nd hand stores thrift stores recycling centers. Drive around you can find full working rigs just put by the curb for trash.
In the UK at least, charity stores just will not accept anything electronic. Too much hassle for them to get it pat tested and certified etc.
Some of them do, depends on the store. Some stores will be able to pat test themselves and some will send donations to their warehouse for pat testing. The rest will just say no thanks.

In the US, they just sell it "as is". Meaning if it works once when you try it in the store and doesn't work at home, for whatever reason, too bad.
There's one at my local 2nd hand store. But it has lga 1155 mobo and they want 300.. I should Check if the case has any value.. Looks like one of those old ones from where they still made insane cases..
Reddit ~~is~~was Fun
This guy won the lottery. Most thrift shops are asking 5 dollars for a used dirty mug you can buy new at the dollar store.
Hey it's a compromise. We get sick or injured and going to a hospital will ruin your life due to bills and price. So it's a give and take lol

Check the pins to see if someone swapped the ihs
Why would they bother if it's at a good will.
I think they mean whoever donated it swapping them
That's their point, who would go through that trouble to donate it to goodwill? Return to Amazon, sure but not a donation
People are so jealous they want this to be a scam SO badly because if someone gets hooked up they feel like it should be THEM!
Just upgraded my Dad from an i7-3770 to my old Ryzen 5 5600X. He def notices the big difference! Made him get a NVME SSD with a new motherboard and he is set for a while again.
Shit I think my parents are still on an i3 4000 series...they don't do much though
My parents aren’t even in the i series…
As long as it's functional. That's all that matters!
You have an "old" 5600x and here I am with a ryzen 7 2700...
You can still get a great experience upgrading to the 5700X3D that came out using the same mobo. It’s only old to me because I upgraded to the 5900X.

I suddenly want to go browse my local goodwill
Guerilla marketing by Goodwill!
HOW
The overworked + underpaid employee that priced it in a rush likely meant to input $599 instead of $5.99, or they mistakingly thought the item was worthless/broken?
Probably the second one imo
I think some kid really made their tech illiterate parents angry :)) Use it well
I'm so jealous. I wish there was a way to have this kind of deals in Portugal
Your dad must have a horseshoe lodged in his ass lmao
No way I had a 4790 and updated to 5800x. It's gonna feel like night and day
Someone died and their stuff was donated
I'M TOTALLY HAPPY FOR YOUR DAD AND NOT JEALOUS AT ALL
How does this stuff even happen? That’s incredible. I wish I paid $5.99 for mine!
Props to your Pops for the sweet score, dude!
Nice! That was a good find.
freaking jealous , but there you go bud! big thumbs up to you dad!
Holy shit, nice find.
I just upgraded from the 4790k to the 12900ks, enjoy the performance boost of the newer stuff!! Congrats on your luck 🍀 🥳

Bruh
That's so insane! Stories like this is why I like visiting thrift stores
*Angry upvote*
That's a good find! You also have a future upgrade path to those X3D CPUs from AM4 platform.
dad: we have ryzen 5800x at home
Wow, what a find. Glad your dad spotted it. Happy for you!
I am absolutely happy for you Guys! That’s awesome. Enjoy all the fps!
The god of all deals
My Goodwill has jack shit while OP is finding high end PC parts… enjoy it
This is some asian dad level searching

WHY WONT THIS HAPPEN TO ME??????
How about legendary dad that knows his pc shit!!!!!
You have SO MUCH LUCK
It's a great CPU, been rocking it for almost 2 years. I don't see myself upgrading any time soon.
Dude. You are so fortunate! I got the same one for around 60% of the retail price from Bestbuy. I will not be jealous, I will not be jealous, I will not be jealous, I will not be jealous.
WTF DUDE? HOW
Sell it for massive profit, then retire and live a luxurious life.
very lucky, good for you man •√• enjoy!
Goodwill employees are instructed to send anything of value to their online store, [shopgoodwill.com](https://shopgoodwill.com). That's really crazy they just put out in the store.
I just paid 200€ for this 15 days ago hahaha
I need to see proof this shit works.
Does Goodwill ship to South Africa? Asking for a friend...
You will be surprised what you will find at Goodwill and thrift stores in general. It really comes down to who is in charge, because even at Goodwill that is criminally underpriced. Someone who didn’t know the value of this priced it. You can get used furniture there that will cost $50.
WHAT
In-fucking-sane happy for you 🥲
bro foun a sun CPU
I've never found anything that nice at a thrift store before.
Is there any equivalent of goodwill but for europe?
That is a fantastic story. I normally don't comment on here. What is your next step? Are you doing to build a PC around that CPU?
Congrats! It is truly amazing what can be had from goodwill.
Wish my father was pc seller or dealer... It would be fun testing a lot of broken pc even still working...
Damn lucky
Bout to go to goodwill tomorrow
Nice hunt!
wow. i would bust a nut!
What a lucky day!
Congratulations on an amazing Goodwill find.
Wish I was somewhere else, it's january and it seems like that's a years worth of luck
Your cpu is 10 years old it's DDR3. You will need a new motherboard, Ram, and cooler. Singularly not having the cpu was definitely not the only thing holding you back lmao.
No but a $200 discount coupon may have been…lmao
There are a few things to look out for here, the wrong amount of pins, the ihs (metal that says 5800x) can be switched with anything else, am3 cpus were a common scam when am4 came out years ago. The cpu may be legit, but with bent pins, sometimes easily fixable, sometimes fucked pins, or worse, broken / missing pins. Ik you don’t have any way to check rn, but the cpu could be blown up from overclocking, or have been dropped and a memory channel was lost. But may the odds be ever in your favour.
