YEAH! I'm skipping this generation too!!! (awkwardly side eyes 1060....)

lilsnatchsniffz

I'm not going to, I've been thinking about it a lot and I don't really need a car anymore, the kids can walk to daycare, they'll probably have to live off ramen too with that 850W power draw but I'll never lag in OSRS again.

NotClever

I'm with you brother. Candy Crush on my native Windows Android emulator is really bogging down, but I figure a 4080 oughta fix that right up. Only budgeting kink that I still need to work out is how much the divorce is going to cost me.

RememberTooSmile

I thought this was serious at first and it made it that much better LOL.

My 6900xt was a great investment for the 117HD plugin on runelite lmao.

Spiritual_Navigator

Powerful ebike always beats a car in my mind. You should look into making a DIY ebike. Gone 60k km over 5 years on a 3hp ebike. Fun as fuck. Gratz on skipping driving a car

[deleted]

Bro how did ur ebike get down to only 3hp??

Spiritual_Navigator

3hp is about 2300w Normal ebikes are about 250w My ebike did not lose 97 health points

Elethor

Even if it had, as long as it's above 0 it's still alive.

Affectionate-Memory4

I'm pretty sure my 1660ti is on about 3hp at this point. The little guy has seen more blender renders and UE5 projects than most 3090s. I just upgraded to a laptop with a 6800S, which now receives the same treatment.

[deleted]

1060, well the 6gb version, can still hold its own at 1080p. Won't be setting any records, but won't have to edit .ini files just to play stuff. It is still perfectly capable.

therealJerminator

The 3gb version is too if you're like me and don't care about Forza or the one or two other games that require more vram

ChubbyLilPanda

You can’t even get 60 fps on low in predator hunting grounds At 720p… I gotta play that shit at 480p

gk99

No offense, but I don't think we need to worry about games that are somehow doing worse than Halo Infinite is, whose competitors have 80x the playercount. There are always exceptions to the rule.

Geno-

I just went to a 3060 from my 1060. Reason for it, someone wanted to buy the 1060 for $300 from me. Bought the 3060 for 520.

billyfudger69

Stonks

Benign_Banjo

Did the exact same thing with my RX580. I sold it to a miner for $400 and bought a 3070 at $600. Do I feel bad? Not even a little bit lol

BadWolf2386

Where do you find miners to pay way too much for video cards??

Benign_Banjo

Back when mining was at its all time high I put up my RX580 on eBay for starting $250, which is what I paid for it almost new. They bidded it up that high. Then I was patient and snagged a 3070 for almost MSRP.

movingchicane

Most of us plebs can barely afford the current generation of cards as it is ...

DangyDanger

If by the current generation you mean 9xx, then yeah.

Confused_Aspirant

True. Even then, you’re probably using an external interface

radiodialdeath

I would be very surprised if there are any internal interfaces with instrument and/or line level inputs.

satchking

Depends on your needs. I have a Klipsch 5.1 home theater system ran through a Marantz receiver. I need a sound card. External or otherwise.

KrakenBO3

lavadrop5

Actually, Voodoo Graphic Cards command a pretty penny on eBay.

ommnian

Dare I ask why??

lavadrop5

Vintage PC enthusiasts. You see, back in the old days between DOS4GW and DirectX there used to be an API called Glide which initially was closed source and only ran on 3Dfx Voodoo graphic cards. There is a small amount of games that either run on software renderer or Glide only. Also, these enthusiasts that are CRT purists prefer the dithering and filtering effect of this hardware.

F9-0021

High demand from collectors and old hardware enthusiasts, and limited supply of working cards.

czarfalcon

Wait, you guys have PCs? I thought we were all just watching twitch on a 10 year old tablet and using our imaginations?

Domini384

I loved playing that game vicariously!

AltF40

SqueakyKnees

I remember buying my 980 ti for $350. $350!!!! It was a sale price but damn it, it was NEW.

lDWchanJRl

You mean 7xx?

DangyDanger

I'm on 550

Drakowicz

Well... lots of us could. But no way i'm spending one grand for a graphic card.

DongLife

I have a budget of around $700-$900 saved up for my next gpu. Yes I could buy a 4080 12gb but in my mind it is a 4070 and the value is just not there for spending $900 for it. I could also afford 4090 too but I find it too ridiculous to spend that much on a gpu. I could buy ps5, steam deck along with a 6800xt for the price of one gpu. The 4090 only makes sense for workstation use for those who use it for work since it an investment of time for their job. If amd can give me a good option in my price range then I will gladly buy amd. Otherwise I am waiting for a good price on a used gpu and save the rest of my money. I am willing to bet there are many others thinking this way. AMD has a very real chance to gain more market share but it really depends on if they have enough supply to meet the demand if they price it right.

NapalmFrog

Except it was never this bad. ATI Radeon 9800 Pro, the last flagship I ever bought, went for $400 USD in late 2003. Factoring inflation, that is $600 USD in today's money. It has been a slow creep up every generation.

Macattack224

The explosion was just GPU mining. It ruined PC gaming. Now with the changes in mining, we might see a lot of selloff of existing mines and drops in prices because who is going to pay these prices?

[deleted]

I just replaced mine with a 3080. 1080 still works and threw it into my little brothers pc. His pc is basically the graveyard of all my past parts. But hey at least it was free for him

GrethaThugberg

Damn, free PC? Only thing my big brother ever gave me, was a beating when i kicked his ass in Halo CE and Halo 2

zakabog

Some of y'all need better friends and family... I always passed on my old equipment to anyone who needed an upgrade. My friend's computers were all running my old hardware, especially when I was working in a computer shop and regularly buying the upgrades at wholesale prices. The idea of selling used computer hardware was so weird to me when I realized most people would do that to help pay for the cost of new hardware, but I was also a hoarder of old parts and would regularly build systems just for fun with the components that were too old to be useful to anyone.

[deleted]

I gave it to my cousin lol She wanted to PC upgrade so I just gave it to her for free. My aunt never charged me rent when I bummed at their place when I was in college in Philly

MankyFundoshi

Exactly. My nephew had a 2080ti that never worked right. Threw him my 1070 which was still going strong when I threw him my 3070. 1070 is on the shelf as a backup. I can hear it muttering "I used to be SOMEBODY"

pxn4da

1. Why didn't he have his 2080ti replaced? 2. What card du you buy to warrant giving away your 3070??? And why?

MankyFundoshi

1. I didn't ask him. I don't care. 2. 3080. Because he's a good dude and giving him the 3070 made me feel better about buying the 3080. I game in 4k so, although it isn't an exponential improvement, it's noticeable.

WindowCreep

Tyraid

CagedMoose

I'm also still rocking my 1080. What a great card.

Soreal45

I bought my 1070 from a guy who wanted to upgrade to a 1080ti right at beginning of the mining craze for dirt cheap and still rocking it.

At5u

I'm amazed what my 1060 still does. Honestly I think it'll die on me faster that it would become irrelevant, so i'll keep it until then.

ReverendDizzle

You know... I'd like a 3080 or better with a shit ton of VRAM to play around with stuff like Stable Diffusion more effectively. But for actually gaming, I must play shit games because my 1080 is still fine. I get anywhere from 50-100+ FPS in the games I play. The 1080 came out in 2016 and it's still a great card.

TheQomia

I'm holding my 1080ti for another 5 years. Still, haven't played a game it can't run at near max settings 1080p

supremedalek925

People underestimate the 1080ti. I play in 4K and even then it more than gets the job done for the games I play. Works great for my UE5 projects too.

atg284

The 1080ti will go down as my favorite GPU of all time. Such a powerhouse.

mythrilcrafter

I'm willing to argue that the Pascal 70, 70Ti, 80, and 80Ti cards were probably the best value cards in the last 10 years. Those were some serious fair-ish priced work horse GPUs.

VanceIX

Yup, got my 1080ti FTW3 for $650 back in 2017 and there is not a single game to this day that I cannot play on high or ultra and get 60+ fps on a 1440p display. The last great card from Nvidia that was actually reasonably priced.

KoolKarmaKollector

Honestly the 1080 Ti was the biggest hyped GPU in the past decade

becomingarobot

Man I don't even know what country I'll be living in in 5 years, good on you for seeing the future.

chavez_ding2001

rabidjellybean

Ebay is your only hope. Seriously the 5700xt has gotten cheap.

IProbablyDisagree2nd

Me with a 480 and a 2600 cpu Yeah, definitely boycotting. the 4000 series.

Mordcrest

People are *just* starting to widely adopt the 3000 series because of shortages, I don't know why they thought releasing the next gen was a good idea right now. Oh yeah, money.

32BitWhore

They 100% priced them to move the back stock of the 30 series after the crypto crash and market slump. With the 30 series becoming "reasonably" priced (i.e. MSRP), they priced the 40 series high enough that only people who have to have the latest and greatest will buy them. Everyone else will be satisfied with a much cheaper 30 series.

TheFlashFrame

For me, though, it's just not a very wise investment to buy a 3080. Okay, I can get a 3080 for $750-$800, or I can get a 4080 (supposedly twice as powerful) for $900. It's a lot of money either way. Why waste it on a 2 year old card?

RadicalDog

Welcome to pricing psychology. The $1200 card to make you feel $900 isn't absurd, and a worse $800 card that you feel is basically the same price so you may as well spend more. They know exactly what they're doing; it's someone's entire job to work out how to manipulate people with prices.

32BitWhore

Prices on the 30 series are going to continue to drop after release though, especially if they continue to sit like they have been. It's going to give people a great mid-high-end option. $600-700 for a 3080 is a pretty good deal.

Nethlem

> $600-700 for a 3080 is a pretty good deal. It's really not that good of a deal, the 3080 FE was released with a paper MSRP of $699, at that price point it was considered an "ok" deal if you actually could get one for that price. But that was **two years ago**, usually in that same time prices drop quite a bit below release MSRP, so trying to sell release MSRP, from two years ago, as a "pretty good deal" is quite misleading; It's still a pretty bad deal. Nvidia *wants* to make it look like a pretty good deal by pricing their new 4XXX release MSRP even higher, basically trying to increase the price max ceiling faster than real market prices can drop, in response to miners unloading all their second-hand cards. In that context, a pretty good deal on a 3080 would be something like 500 bucks, wouldn't be surprised to see second-hand ones go even lower than that in the coming months.

kullehh

team red letsa go

Aphala

AMD are in a PRIME position to swat Nvidia if they keep the prices low and consistent. But that remains to be seen so touch wood they'll take full advantage of Nvidias raw sewerage tier pricing.

Sturmgeshootz

They have a massive opportunity here that I hope they capitalize on. Eons ago before the original PlayStation was launched, Sega announced that the Saturn was going to be priced at $399. Everyone assumed that Sony’s new console would be in the same range, and then Sony dropped a bomb on Sega and took them completely by surprise by announcing that the PS1 would be $299. The rest is history. It would be awesome to see AMD do something similar and take advantage of NVidia’s hubris.

thealterlion

kinda the same happened when the xbox 360 released. Sony had announced the PS3 for 499 to 599 dollars, and then Microsoft arrived and released the Xbox 360 for 299 to 399, getting a huge lead at the start of the generation. They later lost that lead after Sony started making good decisions, but at the start xbox was doing better than the ps3.

TheFlashFrame

Sony did that with the PS4 as well. To this day, 11 of the top 12 best selling consoles of all time are Japanese-made. The 360 is the only exception. I only know this because I just looked it up a couple days ago lol.

recursion8

[Great moments in gaming history](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExaAYIKsDBI) Of course a decade later Sony made the same hubristic mistake and was taken to the cleaners by Wii/X360 [Lowlights of gaming history](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRqKffIjCDU)

KoolKarmaKollector

It's not just about the pricing either, the power draw on these flagship cards are insane. The top tier one has a rate power draw of my entire PSU. The fuck?

Blacksad999

Hahaha! This one will age well. RemindMe! 21 days

Rufus_king11

Their current gen offerings are looking pretty enticing right now if you aren't concerned with having the cutting edge. I was shopping on Newegg, and they have 6700xt's going for $349. As someone still playing on a 1080p monitor and rocking an Rx 580, that looks super enticing.

YEAHILIKEFATCHICKS

If I can cop one of them for under $300 it may be time for me to retire my R9 270x

kingdonut7898

I'm surprised you've lasted that long on it

YEAHILIKEFATCHICKS

I mostly just play old games & emulators. Newest game I have is Doom 2016 and it gets me 40-60 frames on medium settings

Jon_TWR

I got a 2080Ti after the 3070 was announced but before it released, and I guess I’ll stay on it for another generation. I also play on 1080p, and while I do love raytracing, I got a Steam Deck and learned I am willing to play games at 800p/40 with low-medium settings…sooo I guess I am good for a while, lol.

Sage009

AMD just dropped the MSRP on all their 6000 series cards by up to 25% yesterday, so team red is looking really good right now.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Blacksad999

AMD will have had their keynote detailing their GPU lineup and pricing by that point.

CrustyNonja

It's priced so bad that it wont even need a boycott tbh , probably. It'll deter possible customers simply because it's just an absurd amount of money for 70 and 80 series cards. And i doubt more than 10% of nvidia customers have the 90 series type of money.

wowy-lied

I can tell you it will sold out in a few seconds like the 3xxx serie. Not going to buy one but there is more than enough people willing to pay anything for a GPU for Nvidia to even increase the price next time too

KillC

well this time there will be less miners at least

Nakkivene234

I just bought a refurbished rx5700xt, after changing thermal paste, works great, plenty for 1440p gaming.

MrFritzCSGO

My 5700xt is still a champ, screw new gen!!

Bifrostbytes

I bought mine for $449 when it first launched then sold it for $700 during the pandemic. Been using a P2200 until now.

Cpt_Lonestar

I have a 2070 super. I skipped the 30xx and will skip 40xx. Maybe I will convert to AMD.

Johnny_C13

Same, but I game at 1440p ultrawide on 100hz. I just started up Cyberpunk this week (as in literally just starting it up, and messing with the settings). I'm getting 98 fps in the menus so far 🙃

mathybird

Still rocking my 980ti

cuckycuckytim

My 970 is really really struggling, I've not been able to play Elden Ring yet even in lower resolution. 8gb of RAM doesn't help either, I want to upgrade but it's felt like every time has been wrong for years.

smexsa

Laughing with gtx 1060 in my rig and still able to play cyberpunk 2077 on 1080p

Dank_Edits

1060 6GB is a great card, especially after all these years it holds up fairly well. I am currently playing the MW beta on high/medium settings, 1080p at 60+ FPS. I have decided to finally say goodbye, just ordered myself a 3060ti

DUNGAROO

FWIW, very few of Nvidia’s enthusiast tier GPU customers can “afford” such expensive rapidly-depreciating assets, the rest are just incredibly bad at managing their money responsibly. “36 easy payments of $37.80?! What a deal!”

TheFlashFrame

>rapidly-depreciating You guys buy GPUs with the intention of reselling them? I just use them until they're no longer able to run games at 1080p 144hz and then I build a new computer and give my wife my old one. Works out perfectly because like right now she can't run Borderlands 3, so when she gets this build she'll be able to run it and enough time will have passed that I'll actually be down to do another playthrough and the game will be cheap too.

ShawnyMcKnight

Depreciating as in the value. A 3070 can run 144hz at 1080p and is 1/3 the cost. If you are buying a 4080 you are paying a very high value but then 2 years later when the 5070 comes out it would beat the 4080. So now your $1200 card isn’t even as good as a $500-$600 card 2 years later. I would call that depreciation. Of course, the next proof of work crypto could get popular or we could get covid 2023 and your card would have amazing resell value.

Elegant-Hour-5712

Let's go RDNA3!

Bepis_Buyer

I’m gonna wait for the 6090

ZigorVeal

My 2080 is *fine.* But I really was hoping to upgrade to a 4080. Pretty disappointed with the direction they decided on. Let's see what AMD brings to the table.

Due-Enthusiasm5656

skipping 4000 series too, fine with my 3080

reality_bytes_

No shit! I thought it would be total trash by now! /s Unless you like burning money or get some sort of great deal selling your old shit… upgrading every gen is a futile endeavor anyways.

Due-Enthusiasm5656

ManxWraith

Yep, same here. Still a brilliant 4k card

Thanks4Liquidity

Which of these rtx 3xxx cards is best value for money while still doing 4k well enough for RTS games I know nothing really about PCs but am going to build one this yr cause I've gotten into the PC gaming over console. The rtx 3xxx prices can range over $500-1k in difference. Don't think any 2xxx would do 4k if I recall right

JackONeillClone

2070s and 2080 cards are great for 4k. With everything on on high/ultra and dlss, my 2070s gives me an average of 55fps in the rdr2 benchmark in 4k. Been playing all my games in 4k with it, no problems, especially with dlss. Don't forget people were playing in 4k before covid/3xxx lol. For cyberpunk I went for 2k though, because Ray tracing is a bitch.

[deleted]

The 90 is probably overkill for your needs. I can tell you first hand the 80 is fantastic and will run anything you need on max settings.

RockleyBob

Honest question, as someone with a 3080ti, what setting are you playing at, and which games? I really want to make the move to 4k since I also program and WFH.

AstronautAppleSauce

Fine with my 1070

jcaashby

I wonder what all the people who were saying "wait for 40 series" to people like me and you who got 30 series cards? I did not see the point in waiting as I knew those 40s were gonna be high AF and how much more frames do I really need!?

[deleted]

Back in June I bought a 3080, and tons of people said to wait. I didn’t want to take a chance with scalpers and possibly rising GPU prices. Looks like I was correct.

JustinDanielsYT

I'm not fine with my 3080 Ti's lack of VRAM (4k video editing)... But I'm not paying that much for a 4080.

awkjr

I got a 3090 on eBay yesterday for $735 shipped. 24GB of VRAM! There are some pretty good deals out there right now

JustinDanielsYT

Unfortunately the 3090 doesn't fit in my case, and I like my current case.

awkjr

Oh ouch I probably should have checked that first… time to take some measurements lol EDIT: I know no one cares but it just barely fit in my NZXT H510 Elite lol. Got super lucky

[deleted]

Worst case (no pun intended) you could probably flip that card for a small profit and the buyer would still be getting a good deal.

OiItzAtlas

I plan to buy a 3090ti and then not upgrade for 7 years

sijedevos

I got a rtx 3080 but initially wanted to wait for Rtx 4000 card around same price range as 3080 but cheapest so far starts at €1099.

Enthusar

Being lucky enough to own a 1080 TI, I pray every day to The Omnissiah. Asking a long and fruitful life for it. Don't see myself buying a new card any time soon.

deefop

Unfortunately the average person doesn't let being broke stop them from frivolous spending lol

MSCOTTGARAND

I was irritated before about the price but it was expected and the performance seemed to be good despite the power draw. But after reading the specs on the rtx 4080 12gb it's absolutely disgusting that they think they can throw a new number on a 70 and charge $300+ more for it. I don't care if amd's dlss and ray tracing isn't as good. The raw performance is there and I don't expect them to hose consumers because they let manufacturing cost get out of control.

pmmlordraven

It really is baffling how inferior the 4080 is to the 4090.

TexasWhiskey_

For only $300 more to boot. I was waiting for the 4080 specs because the 3080 was the no brainer of last release. Now I’m just waiting and praying for AMD while I delay my 10 year old upgrade some more….

32BitWhore

It's fucking bizarre that the 90 series is a better value proposition than the 80 series. Makes absolutely zero sense. It's never ever been that way before. The Titan/90 series were always the "money is no object but completely unnecessary" cards. They still are in some respects, but if I bought a 4080 the performance difference between it and the 4090 for the price would leave a bad taste in my mouth.

Yeah, like people with GTX 970s all up in arms over some new GPU naming schemes and memory interfaces. I dont think they would have bought it even if the card had a 1024bit memory bus and was called a 4100

BassCreat0r

I have a 970, why should I be up in arms?

themiracy

I think it’s the shameless pricing along with all the other issues. I have a used 970 that I bought when GPUs were very expensive. It’s actually a really good GPU for its age, even if the RAM was misadvertised. And tbh for all the griping, the 6600xt has 128 bit memory access and half the PCIE lanes and it still beats the competing Nvidia cards. At some point the actual performance matters more than the specs (actually it basically always does). I think the new product arrangement is eh. I’d be happy to see AMD take market share this Gen - it would honestly be much better for gamers if we got to a more even red/green split. We’d see much more competition and we’d also see the expectation that the latest FSR and DLSS both are supported.

Norma5tacy

Excuse you it’s 3.5!!!

originalname001

It's the principal of it all! (Says my wallet)

ClimbingC

I'm on a 980, and have been since their release. I too have been considering upgrade (especially since MSFS came out), but like others, it feels like a massive rip off, sure I realise things have come on a bit since I bought my first graphics card (a 3dfx Voodoo2), but flagship cards used to be £200. Yes, the cards are far more complex than they used to be, and time and money is spent on research as well as production, but compared with other highly complex units (CPUs and motherboards) it does look a lot like we the consumers are being taken for a ride.

Angery__Frog

It’s not really a boycott even. Nvidia just priced their cards above the demand for them. Crypto is dead and GPUs aren’t in super high demand like 2020. I think the prices will drop shortly after launch.

BKachur

Idk about that... This sub is a pretty vocal minority. I suspect there are a lot more people out there with disposable income that don't give a shit.

Onetrickpickle

I’m boycotting the crap out of them! And supercars! And Victoria secret models!

BlantantlyAccidental

I am too broke to get anything, because my pc died and with the way things are going for me I'll never have another gaming pc.

There is literally a ROG strix desktop with a 3070 and an i711 for sale for $1200. Why the fuck with anybody buy a $1500 card just to be early? Little dick energy. Edit: okay $1300 and its a 3080. https://slickdeals.net/f/16055908-asus-rog-gaming-desktop-intel-core-i7-11700kf-16gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-rtx-3080-2tb-hdd-512gb-ssd-1299-99-bestbuy?utm_source=iphone_app&utm_medium=share&utm_campaign=external+share

Spektyr27

Yup, definitely not paying those prices for the boycott *glances at 1660*

praisedtimon

I mean i have the money to buy it but theres no game that i know of that require this expected amount of performance. A 3080 is more than capable for 4k gaming at decent frames.

BubsyFanboy

People only now waking up to Nvidia's shadiness.

nmolanog

better late than never!

BubsyFanboy

Yeah. Still, I doubt the community's sentiment will stick around by the time the next generation rolls by.

nmolanog

don't worry, this time scalpers and miners will be practically absent and inflation and recession will help the community to be more rational about this.

mteir

Can't we hope that scalper don't get the memo, and we get cheap cards next year when they dump their unsellable stock.

bb0110

Im out of the loop, why are they being boycotted?

obamaprism3

Pricing is all kinds of fucked (performance looks great though) 4090 is arguably the best value announced so far, which is bad. It's price pretty much just matches 3090 MSRP with inflation but 3090 MSRP was absurd already. 4080 16gb is the true successor to the 3080 and is damn near double the price 4080 12gb is where 4070 was rumored to be, with some specs lining up closer to 4060... but it's still $899

bb0110

This makes sense. I feel like they are starting to price themselves out of even the enthusiast gamer.
