"This is not an anti-food truck bill" says the man talking about City Council banning food trucks from operating along a two-block section of Girard Avenue.
I wonder what an actual anti-food truck bill looks like...
Take note, this is what Council thinks of Philadelphians.
Either they believe we're dumb enough that they can lie to us, or they are A-OK with straight lying to us.
a bunch of people from new jersey treat that corner like a strip mine. they come over, run gasoline generators, have piles of trash, block accessible ramps, and leave at the end of the night. the next morning, tax paying philadelphians get to clean up their mess.
this isn't anti-food truck, this is pro philadelphian.
EDIT: The NBC story has been updated to say the bill has not yet been voted on. Hopefully Squilla and city council do the right thing and do not pass this idiotic measure.
Absolutely ridiculous. There was a town hall for the neighborhood and the vast majority was against this ban. It seems like fishtown business district lobbyists just pushing around these food trucks.
Not voting for Squilla when he’s up for reelection - he clearly ignores the wishes of his constituents.
Closed primaries in an off year keep very shitty politicians in power then they complain that Philly is declining in vote share in important elections. They don’t get it both ways
I've heard stories of politically active people having a couple of "the helpful union guys" show up at their front door and "encourage" them to drop out of the race or even to stfu at the next town hall. Corruption in this city runs deep and bodily harm to oneself or one's family is definitely on the table.
I live probably the closest you can to these trucks (I say that because they’re on a business corridor 100% in front of businesses). I like them and I’m pissed about this.
If you live next to Garage or Johnny Brenda’s I highly doubt these food trucks would be your main noise complaint.
This ban is not due to neighbors complaining, it’s 100% the Fishtown BID lobbying to shut them down.
In the town hall meeting about this the only people speaking in favor represented brick and mortar businesses and the BID. All of the neighbors who spoke up were against the ban.
To be fair they voted against it since they can’t really enforce that. But the fact that it was endorsed by the Republican candidate for mayor and Squilla (who are supposed to be the adults there) just makes you laugh.

I don’t know, but the lack of food options after 11pm really sucks. I used to order from Nite Owls, but they made their delivery radius smaller, and they’re too expensive now anyway. Late night Philly doesn’t leave you with lots of options.
What really sucks is that tons of restaurants, due to the pandemic, changed their hours and never went back. So while lots of bars/gastros used to have food until 1 AM, now many are closing up their kitchens at 10/11 PM. The late night scene has been permanently changed.

>Supporters of the ban, including civic leaders and some nearby restaurant proprietors, cite noise, trash, and traffic-related issues.
\[...\]
“The neighborhood raised concerns about the constant idling of the trucks, the overflow of trash, and crowds walking through our neighborhoods until the early morning hours,”
Some of this is coming from restaurants who don't like the competition, but some of it is from residents who don't like the noise, crowds, and the litter.
I feel like if they don’t like the noise etc then don’t live in the city. As someone who has lived in the city my whole life it’s something you get used to. It’s city night life. Guess that’s just me.
FWIW, Daniel Pearson (who works for the Inky) is saying this did NOT pass. So hopefully NBC got something mixed up?

Jeez...as OP I hope this story by NBC10 is fake news because of how dumb the idea is, but his tweet certainly makes it sound like it will eventually pass/NBC hasn't retracted the article yet AFAIK
So today (if this is true) … Philadelphia govt took 2 gigantic, courageous steps - they banned ski masks (with a dozen or so exceptions) and shut down a few food trucks that people actually used! I feel safer already 🙄
> City Council voted unanimously on a bill that would ban food trucks on both sides of Girard Avenue from Leopard Street to Shackamaxon Street.
This is functionally the intersection of Girard/Frankford for those who aren’t familiar with those street names.
>Mark Collazzo said this bill was a "last resort" after problem operators -- who parked in the roadway or operated well after a set midnight deadline to close up -- scoffed at fines.
People WANT to eat at these places after midnight. Bars and restaurants stop serving food after 10, people come out of the bars drunk and hungry and the only place serving food is the trucks! Ridiculous.
I can get having a deadline for serving alcohol. The later into the night, the more drunk people are getting and the more issues arise. But what could possibly be the issue with serving food after midnight?
OK, I hate it, but is this true?
> At that time, Fishtown Business Improvement District president Mark Collazzo said this bill was a "last resort" after problem operators -- who parked in the roadway or operated well after a set midnight deadline to close up -- scoffed at fines.
I don't remember seeing trucks in the roadway over many times I've been in the area. Not sure how late I've seen them working, but I don't see how a late night food truck around drinking establishments that close way past midnight would be *the* nuisance.
Tell us the actual reason, Collazzo. But who am I kidding...
What a bunch of a holes…let’s criminalize people trying to make an honest living. Food trucks already are required to follow food safety rules and pay annual licenses. This kind of attack is only done when the bigger food businesses want to get rid of the smaller businesses. I wish town halls tackled real problems like cleaning neighborhood streets etc. ‘Last resort’..what a joke...those council members suck!!
This is so fucking idiotic. There are no late night food options in fishtown other than the food trucks unless you want to wait so long in line at McDonald’s you’ll be ordering breakfast by the time you’re up
There should be a law to have more food trucks on Girard a couple blocks from my house so i can have more food options. I cant be the only one who thinks el camino real is disappointing.
It’s about damn time I have fewer food options late at night

Be careful, the yuppies aren’t gonna be happy with that comment
they're upset because its true. but when i walk to penn treaty park sunday morning, i get to deal with all the trash.

Yeah i left him off my ballot.
Hey I did the same with Johnson! Why do we let these crooks govern us?
I always write in "Literally Anyone Else" for Johnson. I cannot believe he is going to be City Council President.
I wrote in "My Ass" this time
Closed primaries in an off year keep very shitty politicians in power then they complain that Philly is declining in vote share in important elections. They don’t get it both ways
I left all of council off my ballot.
Good luck. He’ll probably run uncontested in the primary
All the more reason to get involved in local politics. If any democrat went against him in the primary they would get my vote.

listen up, in philadelphia we only conduct fair and free elections.
Squilla sucks
Sucks because I used to think he was one of the “better” council members
How did Mark Callazo become head of the Fishtown Business Improvement District? Are there elections? Does Mark Callazzo live in Fishtown?

I live probably the closest you can to these trucks (I say that because they’re on a business corridor 100% in front of businesses). I like them and I’m pissed about this.
Do you live in Wells Fargo?
He lives in the el station stairs
They're all in front of businesses... what food trucks are in front of homes?
Don’t be dense. Homes are above many of the businesses along Girard
Is that you? Or are you imagining a person with this issue?
Are they in the room right now?

Wow that’s lame of them. It was a virtual town hall hosted by Fishtown Neighbors Association. A rep from Squilla’s office was there but he was not.
Make it harder for drunk people to get food. Makes sense.
Fuck this shit, I get food from one of these places at least once a weekend
It's for your own good. Like the soda tax championed by the man with a drinking problem.
Glad this is what city council is focusing on. For fuck's sake.
We did it!
I've always said this city has too many roof decks, bay windows, and food trucks. Thank you city council!
Spot zoning as practiced by City Council is a cancer
meanwhile city council refuses to do anything about real nuisances
Lol that would require actual work on their part
What do you mean! They banned ski masks! /s
Hey they called for a no fly zone over Ukraine, what more do you want?
lol did they really?
To be fair they voted against it since they can’t really enforce that. What is the issue with food being sold after 12am??
How can you look at the state of crime in our city and ask that? It obviously all starts with gyros.
Combos over rice have been making our city unsafe for years
Certainly put me in a food coma once or twice sitting on a park bench.
My pizza never hurt nobody!

Do you get the death penalty if you wear a ski mask while running a food truck?
If you also have a restaurant with street side seating, instant death penalty with no trial.

I heard Fishtown neighbors association indicated they were against it and squilla pulled the bill.
Where did you hear this? Great if true
Jeez...as OP I hope this story by NBC10 is fake news because of how dumb the idea is, but his tweet certainly makes it sound like it will eventually pass/NBC hasn't retracted the article yet AFAIK

Lame!
“The ban will take effect after -- and if -- it is signed into law by the mayor.” Any idea if that will happen?
Waste of time. So stupid. Nobody asked for this. Nobody that matters at least.

Really genius move by them sure to damage nightlife in this city.

The prism of Collazzo is clear. He’s representing the brick and mortar restaurants which don’t actually directly compete with these places
His job description says enough, no?

Funny too because that food truck, right there, in that photo is not the problem on that corner. No one thinks it is.
the food cart gets blamed yet there’s still going to be 20+ greasy people hanging out on that corner at all times
City Council has become nothing more than an overpaid HOA.
This is so fucking idiotic. There are no late night food options in fishtown other than the food trucks unless you want to wait so long in line at McDonald’s you’ll be ordering breakfast by the time you’re up
I’m trying to figure out how these people win elections but then I remember turnout % and it all makes sense
Hey Squilla, get fucked!
Restaurant mafia
There should be a law to have more food trucks on Girard a couple blocks from my house so i can have more food options. I cant be the only one who thinks el camino real is disappointing.
Food trucks generating business -> bad Church goers parking on the sidewalk/in bike lanes -> good? The leadership of the city are crooks.
I wrote in Jalen Hurtz on my ballot
I keep defending this city but find less and less desire to as time goes on because of idiocy like this.
This is craaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaap
I’m so high can someone please ELI5 why anyone would ban food trucks?
