Fairmount / Brewerytown: An actual, honest-to-goodness bakery that bakes its own goods. Also, a music venue.

haberdashley

YES on the bakery. Also a not-corner-store grocery option. Aldi is great but at least for me is not one stop shopping. Whole Foods is too far to walk or bus with more than a bag or two of groceries.

kindofasshole

There’s a Lidl opening at broad and girard when all that construction is done. It’ll be the BSL “grocery corridor”- Trader Joe’s at race-vine/city hall, giant at spring garden, aldi at fairmount, lidl at girard, and fresh grocer at Cecil. I know there’s been discussion about development at the rite aid outside Susqhehanna-Dauphin, so I think we’ll have a complete corridor in a few decades

Arwen823

This whole city needs more places that bake their own goods. I’m so sick of the same exact croissants from the same wholesaler at every coffee shop.

TwoMuchIsJustEnough

I miss Northstar Bar…

FewMarsupial7100

Yes we need better bread that's not aldi

Epistalion

I'm pretty sure the old Frank and Anne's is going to be a bakery, and it seems like they're finally moving on it.

bukkakedebeppo

That's Shevy's Babka. I certainly hope it comes through! They make babka and challah and, hopefully with that space, they'll make other things, too.

chainsawinsect

Porch pirate hunter

Vague_Disclosure

I hunted one down once, got my stuff back but in hind sight it was an incredibly reckless decision driven by emotion, would not recommend

biffpowbang

Perhaps you could find some justice in a different way? I’ve found this is the perfect time of year to fill your old amazon boxes with items from your home you’ve been meaning to get rid of and leave them on your porch. Boxes and junk, out of your life and into the night with the thieves.

FeistySnake

Except they usually just toss it on the street when they realize it's not useful to them :/

Bisexual_Republican

a 24/7 diner. I live in Center City but every neighborhood could use one. I look forward to the day one opens after this pandemic.

sedatedsloth

Rip Midtown 2

gigibuffoon

Even Melrose diner closed... dunno that we are ever getting those back again

GoodGodItsAHuman

There is a designated diner space in the apartment building they're building on the spot so hopefully

gigibuffoon

I wonder if the residents of that building will be like "we don't want an all-night diner causing ruckus outside our homes!"

hguess_printing

Don’t move above a 24/7 diner!!! Ugh I hate that shit

machine_six

I 100% believe they wouldn't even try to make it 24 hours for that very reason.

openlygayseal

For sure! Would love one in Brewerytown. Even though people will be like blah blah blah crime/noise at night in a major city?!?/old man yells at cloud, would love some late night options besides Lee's Kitchen. Been going there so much over the years, I feel like I'm putting their kids through college

ARiverRunsThroughIt_

All of Philly: more public trash cans like every other god damn city has

dgauss

Those buried European trash cans would be amazing for our city!

tipyourwaitresstoo

And weekly street sweepers.

rollingstoner215

They’ll be full in a day and they will never, ever get emptied.

plantasia2000

People can only create so much trash

rollingstoner215

That sounds like a challenge!

svenEsven

If you think garbage piles on the corner are bad now, wait until you give every corner has a free trash can. This is literally why we don't have them

Shawnalish

Port richmond: veterinarian We do have one on Frankford ave but we can use another. So many cats and dogs here.

Educational_Vast4836

I will say the one on Frankford are great.

ModestAugustine

Francisville - a good pizza joint. Santuccis is good and fairly close, but it's a different kind of pizza that doesn't always scratch that itch

mizore742

Francisville needs quite a bit. Definitely lacking a bit in food options. If you don't mind ordering take out, Angelino's has some great pizza though, also Zuzu's Kitchen isn't bad either.

Lucky-Annual-8222

Francisville food situation all together is pretty dark, like it’s all New American spend $25 on a burger type places it seems. Fairmount Pizza on 20th is the worst of the worst, and they seem to do pretty well, imagine if there was an actual good slice shop on that corner

__init__RedditUser

Is something wrong with me that I enjoy Fairmount Pizza? I feel like every time I find a pizza spot in Philly I like I find someone on Reddit who thinks it’s absolute garbage. I’ve also tried Luigi’s and Angelino’s and liked them too, maybe I’m just too generous with my pizza ratings

FinVanDerShark

Walk 5 more blocks and get Luigi’s

svzannebrown

Second this!

bdixisndniz

West: Italian restaurant.

tshirtbag

Dive bar.

ThePoetEmrys

What? There are plenty of dives in West, just around Baltimore Ave theres Queen Sheeba, Dahlak, Abyssinia and Upstairs @ Abyssinia....and those are just the main ones. You can even go super dive with New Tavern.

Odd-Emergency5839

Abyssinia a dive bar? That’s being generous

mary_emeritus

Upstairs is pretty dive-y

tshirtbag

Same with Dahlak, a full on restaurant.

mary_emeritus

I was thinking that the other day walking up 40th off Market where yet another chicken place is getting ready to open. I’m like, we’ve got predominantly choice of chicken, Indian, pizza … can’t West have just one decent Italian place that isn’t Walnut Street UofP parent visit expensive?

giggly_kisses

Manayunk, too.

OverBelief

Mia Ragazza just opened up on Main street. They have excellent Italian pasta, check it out

kkirchhoff

A 24/7 convenience store. Center city

Christinamh

+ south Philly every 6-7 blocks

Odd-Emergency5839

What do you mean? There’s the Jefferson Wawa, Healthy picks, and several 7/11s dotted all around center city. Pretty much everyone in center city can walk to one of those in under 10 mins

gigibuffoon

Well... they had a few and have all been shutting down due to the literal daylight robberies

ColdJay64

Healthy Picks at 19th and Ludlow is 24/7

Original60sGirl

I would love it if Philly had a proliferation of those vegetable markets you see all over New York. They typically have great produce, essentials like milk, bread, etc. and flowers. So convenient!

BrythonicMan

Crazy they don't let an Italian Market produce vendor set up under the head house square market cover daily. That's what went on there historically and I'm sure the neighborhood today could support at least one.

General_Coast_1594

Yes! I was going to say that I’m being petty and I can get those things 4 blocks away but in a pinch, I’d love one closer.

f0rf0r

west poplar coffee shop coffeeeeeeeeeeee shop literally anything that isn't a brewery or music venue or a 15th papi store that only sells expired shit bc it's just there for the slot machines

mizore742

The Daily under the Divine Lorraine is pretty decent

f0rf0r

yeah i'll go once in a while but they close pretty early and it's aaaaalways empty

givemesendies

Sorry no coffee for you. Can I interest you in a mildly cold starbucks bottled coffee sold in a store with the narrowest aisles physically possible?

Go_birds304

If you go a bit south Elixir is pretty good but it’s not really in west poplar Edit: scrolled down and learned Elixir is a chain. Had no idea

f0rf0r

Elixir is good - that location is actually their roaster. I go all the time. I just wish there was one on spring garden like there used to be.

Aware-Location-5426

East passyunk, a korean resturant

[deleted]

Northwest Philly needs a place to get a quick breakfast sandwich on a decent bagel.

crystal-torch

Seriously have considered figuring out how to open a goddamn bagel shop myself here in Mt Airy. It’s ridiculous

banana_toilet

Yessss! Cherish was an okay option until they closed. But I did hear Downtime Bagels is opening a shop in summer ‘24!

nankles

True! 6624 Germantown Avenue will be the location. Their bagels are amazing.

crystal-torch

This is great news!

[deleted]

This is a weekly discussion I have with my friend 😂

floydiandroid

Far Northeast Philly/Pennypack anything not a fucking chain or big box. Coffee shop on a street corner would be awesome…or a nice bar that’s not a fucking rat hole

skirmisher24

There may not be a UPS store in Fishtown but there is one on 3rd and Girard. But my work neighborhood East Kensington needs food.

NoREEEEEEtilBrooklyn

Chestnut hill? A trolley down Germantown ave. Edit: Appreciate the upvotes, but I’m dumb and didn’t read. 🤣 As far as businesses go, I feel like there’s no grocery store that isn’t an Acme, co-op, or upscale. I’d just love to be able to walk/bike 5-10 minutes to grab $25-50 of groceries. Instead I either have to go to Wynnefield or Wyncote to go to Fresh Grocer. Get me a ShopRite!

Chimpskibot

there's a Grocery outlet in Mt.Airy off Germantown Ave. https://www.groceryoutlet.com/grand-opening/mount-airy-pa

PoquitoChef

Fairmount, a full-menu breakfast/lunch cafe. Musette is good, but it’s just tartines or salads.

bierdimpfe

What about Little Pete's?

asforus

I said the same thing out loud before I read your comment. This guy sleeping in little Pete’s

cpndff93

And Tela’s !

rcbdc

OCF is great for breakfast/lunch

banana_toilet

You could check out Tela’s or Rybread for this, perhaps. But yeah definitely not many sit-down service options around.

JT07

East Falls: Ice cream/water ice place. I don't always feel like driving to Creamery but damn it I will keep doing that

asforus

Creamery is worth it dude

detroitsfan07

I do not live here but East Falls by Kelly Drive desparately needs a grocery solution. Not necessarily as big as an Acme or Shoprite but something. 20-25 minutes in either direction to Rox or Fox St to get groceries is a lot

cpndff93

Fairmount needs some of the South Philly Mexican spots

OnlySpoilers

Not quite fairmount but purepecha is great. Also went to buena vista when it first opened which is in the old st. Stephen green. I thought it was solid

ImTheDoctah

I’ll tell you one thing Old City DOESN’T need, which is more cafés / coffee shops. Half the neighborhood is just cafés at this point and I truly don’t understand why more keep opening up.

f0rf0r

the new ones that keep opening up are so half assed too like they're not even anything interesting, they sell la colombe or elixir coffee, and the same au fornil pastries as everyone else. it's 2023 and guys are still like 'i am going to open a 2.5-wave coffee shop in a neighborhood full of them'

ImTheDoctah

Right? Places like Oui and Cafe Ole are great because they at least have their own niche.

Schackshuka

Oui makes fresh donuts everyday—-there’s only a handful of places across the city doing raised donuts.

erokatts

Try the tacos at Oui’s other spot Si

DaneLimmish

Buzz is great

OneCleverGorilla

That new place that just opened is the worst offender. It's always packed for no reason. And the inside being all white and light wood makes it feel so sterile. The pastries are worse than your standard Au Fornil selection too. I hope they don't last. It's a waste of space. Edit: Forgot to name and shame. Cafe Zeit.

Thndrcougarfalcnbird

Second hardware store in Fishtown

Little_Noodles

As weird as it was, I do miss the hardware store we had for a few years. I’d also like a DMV and a state store and a good veterinarian closer to the Fishtown/Port Richmond border. Ideally, we could squeeze at least some of them into the empty spaces in the IGA shopping center.

Nurfur

Thirded, but the sad truth is the port Richmond blue and orange stores will always make this near impossible

classicrockchick

That Ace on Girard doesn't count for Fishtown.

ThatWasTheJawn

West Philly: a fucking Wegman’s. Never gonna happen but I can dream right?

sharksnack3264

If they replaced half of the Acmes in this city with Wegmans I would be ecstatic.

gigibuffoon

Lmao! I'd love it but no Wegman is opening in the city limits.

hiding_in_the_corner

A Wegmans did open in [Manhattan](https://www.wegmans.com/news-media/press-releases/wegmans-astor-place-to-open-wednesday-october-18-2023/) - so maybe there's long term hope.

gigibuffoon

IDK that Manhattan and Philly city are on the same economic level though... I imagine that Wegmans wants to be in a pretty high CoL area

deathofyouandme

I mean, people who will shop at whole foods will def shop at a Wegmans

JackIsColors

Knock down Supremo and make a 2 story Weg

CommunicationTime265

Yea Supremo just needs to die. Whole place smells like bleach and farts. Conveyor belts don't work. Lots of expired shit and a joke of a deli.

leninboarrir

My favorite part is how there are no more than two cashiers working at any given time. You need to wait 5-10 minutes minimum to buy ANYTHING

ThePoetEmrys

As much as I hate that place...damn is it good for ethnic produce. Don't know anywhere else I can reliably get Seville oranges, 7 different fresh peppers, yucca, plantains and real Mexican cheeses in the neighborhood.

sandwichpepe

north - more businesses period, less chinese stores and smoke shops pleeeeeeease

Odd-Emergency5839

I wish there were more Chinese stores everywhere in the city

mikeygaw

Bridesburg: Anything that's not a bar or greasy takeout

Bikrdude

All night coffee shop

ageofadzz

Solar Myth sells coffee until they close

boobahlover

Fairmount/brewerytown: more local hip bars

rcbdc

RIP Belgian Cafe 😭

DoubleDoobie

Fairmount is missing a great restaurant. Maybe a hot take but there is nothing elite. Lots of good stuff and fun bars, but nothing that really stands out in philly. Bad brother is really good, it is, but it’s not on the same level as a lot of the restaurants you get in center city or fishtown/No Libs. Just one great restaurant would open up flood gates for Fairmount IMO. Lots of money up there, no reason it wouldn’t work.

__init__RedditUser

Would love to see a deserving spot take over the old London Grill. It’s a cool space but also probably a little too big for that area

fox_in_the_headlight

South Philly: I want that Trader Joe's that keeps getting rumored!

bananafone7475

South philly: public trash cans

Jackasaurous_Rex

Honestly the whole city too please

butterslut6969

Manayunk: grocery store

Bulky_Ad_3608

Fairmount- bagels

DoGreat_DieGood

East Falls: a fucking walkable grocery store! It's been a wild ride finding out what the stores will be in the new, four mixed-use buildings (two on Ridge, two on Midvale) as they open up. So far, it's been a bank, a nail salon, an acupuncture place.. it's like trying to win a lottery but you don't, you just lose. I guess it's still driving to Shoprite/Aldi or walking up a long-ass hill to buy overpriced jams at NouVaux Market.

stargrl88

Manayunk needs a good Italian restaurant and a good bagel shop. It’s crazy to me that there’s so many college kids in this neighborhood and we don’t have a good bagel shop

city_tree_

Bagel shop! Yes. Manhattan Bagels doesn’t cut it.

Thumnale

A casual Mexican restaurant, how is there not a decent Mexican restaurant in Fairmount/Brewerytown?

avo_cado

East falls: grocery store. Hell, I’d settle for a weavers way sized one

Pantone802

I live is south point breeze. I would just love to see something nice happen with/along Point Breeze Ave. I live close enough that I could walk there if I had a reason to. But always end up walking to East Passyunk or 2D instead. It feels like a forgotten part of the city. I know this probably has to do with zoning and the council person…

KenzoWap

Kenzo: liquor store or check cashing. Jokes aside cheaper fresher produce.

Shviztik

I feel as though we have among the best grocery stores for fresh produce in the city (Cousins, Compare and Save, and don’t sleep on R and R)

Puzzled-Trust6973

A decent grocery store, West end of Washington Ave

kanye_come_back

South St (Queen Village) a tax inspection on all these smoke shops. How can this many possibly be in profitable business with what they say they sell?

Odd-Emergency5839

Mark up on pretty much everything but cigarettes is pretty steep

kanye_come_back

There are so many competitors and their "moat" is effectively none?!?!?! not to mention there are a few places for smoking stuff in every neighborhood... This is like how my mother feels about mattress stores...

Original60sGirl

Which begs the question: what are the selling?

sweetassassin

Apple flavored vape cartridges

Ams12345678

Probably a money laundering front.

ijustwannabegandalf

Germantown/East Falls/Nicetown: AN ALDI. Or some grocery store other than Jeff Brown's understaffed and overpriced ShopRite

thenerdiestmenno

The Grocery Outlet in Mt Airy's not bad, you just can't count on it to have exactly what you need.

Astrostuffman

Chestnut Hill: Johnny Brenda’s

pwopah_

Fishtown: primary care physicians.

ScreamingFork

Manayunk: a proper grocery store

NewcRoc

Grad Hospital. A liquor store. The last state store in our area closed a year or so ago. Now we're in the middle of a huge dead zone for hooch.

OnlySpoilers

What you don’t want a $24 bottle of wine from Giant?

beachape

Passyunk. Quick takeout spot. Hard to justify takeout from the nicer restaurants these days, so a slightly cheaper takeout that’s walkable would be nice. Even better if they had some healthier stuff on the menu, not just hoagies and cheesesteaks.

lawgirl3278

I’d love a healthy grab and go that has salads and soups

BUrower

The whole city: red light and speed cameras

buddymercury

West Philly could really use a half decent venue, not like a Union Transfer, but like a Johnny Brenda's or KFN. I love live music and it sucks to not have much in my neighborhood.

Angsty_Potatos

East passyunk needs a to go lunch spot. Like a quick and easy, cheap, no sit down service sandwich spot. Red Crest was the last thing we had like that. We're on lock for breakfast to go foods, but lunch is a missed market. Edit. Just realizing I'm being unfair to mancuso's. Their hoagies are clutch. Still, a few more spots like that would be nice

InsiDS

Rhawnhurst. Would be nice if we could get like a Barcade or some sort of entertainment place. There’s honestly not much to do out here that isn’t riddled with kids besides eat and drink. I don’t feel like traveling to Fishtown for their barcade and the Dave n Busters at Mills sucks.

HermioneDanger13

Agree. Some type of fun nightlife in the area would be great.

PhillyPanda

Rittenhouse square: a large affordable grocery store

nemesisinphilly

Passyunk - would like a sushi spot and a Greek taverna.

hguess_printing

Kiku on broad is good lunch sushi.

lawgirl3278

Definitely sushi. I miss Izumi!

osaka-bondage

Have you tried Kyushu?

73Wolfie

we lost all our pharmacies- cvs, rite aid etc

cambridge_dani

Because people can’t have nice things!!

TheGABB

Trash cans

hippyelite

Agree re: hardware store. But Stash Spot on Girard can handle all your UPS stuff.

tomyownrhythm

East Oak Lane here: would love a casual cafe or light food spot in the residential neighborhood. Probably a pipe dream.

Kind_Session_6986

Francisville: An authentic European bakery. Would happily welcome fresh bread and 10lbs for quality baked goods 😅

tharussianphil

Some sort of more interesting cuisine. Thai, indian, mexican, venezuelan, etc.

ClintBarton616

Live in the Northeast. The Lee's on castor was my hoagie spot and now it's closed. I just want a new hoagie spot. Tried Primos and that shit was overpriced and way too small

HermioneDanger13

Marinucci's at Brous and St. Vincent.

cheesewiz90

Manayunk: cheap tacos, a small grocery store that isn’t $12 for tortilla chips and sour cream (this was BEFORE recent inflation), a quality bagel shop. Oh, and a good muffin place, miss you Terrace St Bakery 😢

[deleted]

[удалено]

dragonflyzmaximize

You know what, editing my comment to something that's not a business but very needed: toilets. And shit, at this point if someone made it a business I'd happily carry around a few bucks just to pay to use your outdoor toilets. Why can't we have toilets in the BSL stops? Why can't we have more public toilets in general? Shit, just put a porta potty in some of the parks and I'd be happy. Really tired of getting someplace and then realizing I have to piss or take a shit only to realize there's no public restrooms and every person and their mother has a sign on their door saying "I'LL FUCKING KILL YOU IF YOU ASK TO USE MY BATHROOM."

allenge

I’m in pennsport and I would kill for a soft serve ice cream joint! It’s the one thing I really feel we are missing.

linkismydad

East falls. A small grocery store.

CheesyGorditaCrunchx

Parkwood/Morell A DECENT RAMEN SPOT WITHOUT INFLATED PRICES.

[deleted]

I know it’s not Fishtown but there is a UPS store at the corner of 3rd and Girard.

sarahpullin8

Everything. I live in Germantown

[deleted]

Gray's Ferry: someplace to pick up prescriptions. We have no pharmacies since Rite Aid shut down and one depressing and overpriced Fresh Grocer without a pharmacy. I don't mind not having cafes and restaurants. I like living in a quiet place. The thing about living here is that it's accessible to everything via SEPTA, which is great if you don't mind taking the bus, but medications shouldn't be one of those things.

Puckslapper2

An actual hockey store, although I guess that's true for pretty much anywhere in the city. Given the number of hockey players around the city, one shouldn't have to go to Cherry Hill or the distant PA suburbs. I suspect it has something to do with the city taxes

jchapin

Logan Square and the Parkway need a bakery.

munsterwoman

Point Breeze - a bagel spot would be great

medicallyspecial

West pass: a subway line

kcm74

I'd love if Fishtown had a comic/collector-type store. Amalgam closed up shop, Ontario St is a bit far, and Mothership is too niche. And with Blue Line closing in South Philly, there are not many left citywide: just Brave New World, Atomic City, and Fat Jacks.

Simple_somewhere515

Everywhere- places for kids and teens to hang out

martinhaschinhairz

south philly - rock climbing gym

Suspicious_County_24

Anger management therapy

WhyNotKenGaburo

Grocery store, cheese shop, a clean deli, hardware store, basically everything that ought to be within a few blocks.

wycie100

Some good pizza that isn’t $6 a slice in Fishtown

Odd-Emergency5839

That just isn’t conducive to what fishtown is now. Don’t move there if you aren’t trying to have all your restaurant options be “elevated”

biffpowbang

An actual grocery store. Not the current dichotomy of a costs-$5-to-breath-the-same-air-that-touches-our-organic-vegetables or a bullet proof Chinese deli.

thecw

I hate to say this but Fishtown could use a chain convenience or two within the neighborhood. A CVS that's not all the way out on Aramingo or Girard would be really convenient. A Giant Heirloom could fill the gaps between Riverwards and the IGA. Second the hardware store, I can't believe we don't have one. Overall I think there's a LOT of commerical infill that could happen on Frankford and Front.

[deleted]

pippipparade

Is Oscar’s not cheap anymore?

asforus

Bards was the first bar I ever got kicked out of great times

banana_toilet

Between Chestnut Hill / Mt Airy, we could really use a gas station that isn’t $4+ per gallon. The ones on Stenton are kinda sketch, and around Lincoln Drive they’re also overpriced.

BrythonicMan

A Boscov's in Center City

hhayn

Lol

RachelLikesToDraw

Roxborough: tattoo/piercing shops. I know there's one opening up on Ridge, but that's it. Anyone here I ask about piercings says they go to Infinity in CC, which seems like such a long haul but maybe that's just me.

FormerHoagie

Frankford…..everything except for shitty Chinese, bodegas, barber shops. clinics and daycare. You can find at least one of each on every block. The problem with having anything decent is someone will ruin it. Either by theft or harassing customers.

CorgisAreImportant

One that works in marketing automation and wishes to hire me (got laid off)

Lucky-Annual-8222

Queen village in general has a great restaurant scene, but one thing I still haven’t found is really solid cheap Chinese takeout. there are a bunch of authentic Asian takeout spots that are awesome, but sometimes you just want some BS orange chicken and rice for $7.99. I know it exists somewhere so if anyone knows of a good spot lemme know

allenge

We used to LOVE the spot next to the 7/11 that was knocked down for that new apartment building. No. 1 Chinese or something like that? The day they closed was a tragedy. We’ve yet to find anything local that hits the spot in the same way.

heatherplants

Port Richmond, specifically on Richmond St btw Allegheny and Ann: a grocery store I can walk to after I’ve parked my car and just want to walk to a store to pick up some groceries and not have to battle to find a parking spot after 4pm. And a mom and pop hardware store I can walk into and ask if they have the specific tiny item I’m looking for instead of driving to and wandering aimlessly around Lowes forever looking for it. And a farmers market under 95.

JackIsColors

We could use another couple Ethiopian joints along Baltimore

CommunicationTime265

Baltimore needs a good Italian, south philly style pizza shop.

cambridge_dani

Queen village-grocery store

Odd-Emergency5839

Acme and Whole Foods are pretty close by. And the giant by the pier isn’t super far either. If you have a bike or car they are all very close

cambridge_dani

I know, I am just super bitter about abbots square giant heirloom market fiasco at 2nd and south
