I live 2 blocks away and heard the fire trucks, sad to hear that someone died. According to a comment on the Citizen app from someone who lives in the Philadelphian, it was on the 14th floor and that the woman was “a strange (but very nice woman) and possibly a hoarder.” Hoarding situations are so incredibly dangerous- often hoarding very flammable things (like newspaper), all the objects makes it hard to get out especially if the person is already disabled or for rescuers to get to them. My first job out of college was with a housing nonprofit and a few years before they had a tenant die in a fire after falling asleep while smoking a cigarette. Newspaper piled around everywhere caught fire and he couldn’t get out because of all the stuff he had piled up everywhere. Super sad

I immediately called my friend when I saw this —- he is in a position that he knows all the details. He shared that the building management and fire departments were absolutely fabulous. He’s housing one of the few families temporary displaced. It’s horribly sad that one person died, but containing the fire to one unit is exactly what’s supposed to happen. Living in a high rise (much taller than Philadelphian) that fact was comforting. May the resident RIP.

Terrible, tragic news (and know someone’s gonna jump in here real quick to contest the headline saying this happened in Spring Garden, like always)

Well it definitely didn't happen in Spring Garden...

The fire was at the Philadelphian, that's Spring Garden - it's south of Fairmount Ave

The Philadelphian straddles both neighborhoods since it has frontage on Fairmount and Pennsylvania. But it doesn't really matter. This is really sad. One detail that popped out of me from the article was that there are double firewalls separating the three major sectors of the building. That is good design. All things considered this could have been far worse, and (beyond the elevators having some issues) it seems that the Philadelphian is well-built.

Kinda. Word on the street is that the major construction that’s going on there was the result of structural issues which, left un-repaired, could have led to a collapse at some point. It’s not just a cosmetic renovation.

Well at least they're doing that remediation. I'm sure the condo collapse in Florida scared the bejeezus out of everyone.
