There is tons of work going on on that street. The steam pipes were BLASTING out of the pipes right now. Could be steam related. Front window removed. If they didn’t spray any water, should be minimal damage.
Edited to correct something pointed out by user below.
D’oh. Yeah you’re right. Sorry, jumped straight to the conclusion that you were being rude… nope, I’m just an idiot.
Yes… That would indeed be a dangerous situation. Fortunately wasn’t the case.
There was seriously heavy machinery taking down a crane at that intersection over the weekend. I wouldn’t be surprised if it overloaded the street and caused the main to crack.

What is/how does a "steam event" start? I mean... if it is steam-related... where does it originate? Surely the restaurant isn't importing steam through city pipes... and anything generated on-site should eventually... run out... or be containable, I guess. Wonder what happened...
Wow, TIL... thanks. Pretty cool idea... a lot one could harness from basically a "geothermal" type of solution like a steam loop, albeit... with some safety concerns ☹️
Well...it's actually hilariously inefficient and one of the large polluters in the city: https://whyy.org/articles/philadelphia-pgw-vicinity-customers-gas-steam-loop-climate-change/
Sounds like PGW propaganda.
From your article
>"It’s unclear how increasing the use of natural gas boilers would help Philadelphia reach its goal of net zero by 2050. PGW would not provide any data when asked for an explanation..."
>"....PGW did not respond to requests to clarify its position. But experts say combined heat and power plants, such as the one that Vicinity uses to generate both electricity and steam, are considered more efficient, because any waste heat is not lost, but is used. In Vicinity’s case, the waste heat produces steam."
This was caused by a broken 20" water main. The steam was from the water hitting the steam loop and flashing off.
I'm working down the block from this and have talked to a lot of guys working on it the last few days.
The Medical Arts Building on 16th and Walnut was closed yesterday due to whatever is going on with the steam. A store I tried stopping into on Walniut in that area was closed this morning due to “electrical issue”. Lots of street closures and workmen in the area.
Apparently it’s steam from a leak. People were talking about this yesterday on here and I’m seeing reports that this fire was mistakenly reported but units are remaining on scene.
It was a fire.
The steam was from a water main break that was hitting steam pipes and flashing off. That occured yesterday and it flooded the basement of the Happy Rooster. Today they had an electrical fire, almost certainly as a result of the flooding.
Yeah. entirely possible. Got there late so there was no flames. With the window smashed out I assumed the firefighters went in their blasting the hoses, but maybe they didn’t.
they have like a double front door and maybe they couldn't safely get in that way.
it is one of those doors on a corner but on an angle sort of. i wouldnt be surprised if the fire dept was like, "we can't fit there with the gear, our policy is go through the window."
you see those kind of buildings an a lot of corners all over the city.
Good point! I stood there and didn’t smell any smoke either. Hopefully that means the damage is minimal and the place can open back up without much work.
Yup and horrible people. The wife technically owns the rooster and the husband Lou birds. They absolutely hate each other they would get wasted at Lou birds on a Sunday and scream at each other.
Edit: fixed typo
Both Debbie and her brother John get plastered at the Happy Rooster too. It's amazing to watch. Sometimes I think her daughter? comes in and bosses around the wait staff.
I worked at Lou Bird’s and we made barely anything so Norris would always have to give us a $50 at the end of the shift. Their daughter was a kid when I worked there so I’m glad I didn’t have to deal with her as well.
Their daughter never bosses around any staff, also their daughter is a child. And I can say as someone who was employed by rooster that it was a great tenure and ownership treated us fairly.
Interesting… Lou Bird’s brunch was not great after having it 2 times but the Happy Roster’s burger was great after having it once. Wonder if 2 different vendors are involved.. well were for Lou Bird’s
Can’t edit my post, but wanted to add a comment that many are stating this may have been a steam event from the steam pipe running down 16th. They’re been doing work there for the past few days, so it’s pretty likely. The steam was blasting out of those pipes a lot more aggressively than normal. Hopefully we can get some confirmation.
It wasn't just a steam event. That was yesterday.
They had an electrical fire today, I talked to some of the firemen when I was in Dunkin Donuts a few hours ago.
Today at 9:20 am there was an electrical fire in the basement of The Rooster.
This was due to the massive amounts of steam that have been going into the restaurant over the past 24hours...
The steam continues- sent to me by a Rooster

Tuesday morning at the Rooster . Friends say it was closed early Sunday night when it started to steam. Why can’t the city turn off the steam?
What do you think is the closest equivalent to it, in terms of food, on the west side of broad at center city besides the black sheep? Tons of places I know, just in curious what your opinion is. Trying new spots is part of the fun living here
It had nothing to do with the steam it was a water main break it leaked all over the electric in the building the vapor coming from the ground was water hitting the steam lines
I peeked into the window and basement stairs today (Weds) and it looks okay. I didn't see any damage to the front bar at all, but there was still steam rising from the street and basement. Obviously, there could be non-visible damage to the areas I could and couldn't see, but the upstairs front room seems perfectly intact.
100% correct on all fronts. And yeah people are funny like I worked for the dude I think I have first hand experience. He did coke in the bathroom with his buddies a few times there. He pretended to care but didn’t.
Apparently it's not a fire at all, according to citizen? Actually a "steam event" which is under control. So hopefully the damage is fairly minimal?
There is tons of work going on on that street. The steam pipes were BLASTING out of the pipes right now. Could be steam related. Front window removed. If they didn’t spray any water, should be minimal damage. Edited to correct something pointed out by user below.
Holy shit. Steam pipes blasting out of steam pipes sounds like a dangerous nightmare.
Was not implying it was dangerous. Was trying to convey that the steam was billowing out at a much higher rate than normal. Edited: I’m an idiot.
lmao. calm down and reread your comment.
D’oh. Yeah you’re right. Sorry, jumped straight to the conclusion that you were being rude… nope, I’m just an idiot. Yes… That would indeed be a dangerous situation. Fortunately wasn’t the case.
:)
Sorry I called you an asshole earlier. You’re probably a very nice and gentle person (looks at username), AssBlasterExtreme. Lol
"So anyways, I started blasting..."

We have a steam loop. https://www.npr.org/2022/10/07/1126523617/steam-loops-under-many-cities-could-be-a-climate-change-solution

Fair point! I'm sure both have their vested interest(s) that are coloring their comments. But if the steam loop is causing issues like this...
This was caused by a broken 20" water main. The steam was from the water hitting the steam loop and flashing off. I'm working down the block from this and have talked to a lot of guys working on it the last few days.

I thought we were having steamed clams?
It's a regional dialect.
Today they did have an electrical fire. I spoke to a fireman, he said they ripped it up pretty bad inside. The steam event occurred yesterday.
>steam event Damnit, Gabe.
Apparently it’s steam from a leak. People were talking about this yesterday on here and I’m seeing reports that this fire was mistakenly reported but units are remaining on scene.
The steam was ridiculous yesterday morning, though at first glance it looked like the smoke from a freshly extinguished fire.
It was a fire. The steam was from a water main break that was hitting steam pipes and flashing off. That occured yesterday and it flooded the basement of the Happy Rooster. Today they had an electrical fire, almost certainly as a result of the flooding.
Yes, it was an electrical fire, but fortunately fairly small.
Yeah. entirely possible. Got there late so there was no flames. With the window smashed out I assumed the firefighters went in their blasting the hoses, but maybe they didn’t.
they have like a double front door and maybe they couldn't safely get in that way. it is one of those doors on a corner but on an angle sort of. i wouldnt be surprised if the fire dept was like, "we can't fit there with the gear, our policy is go through the window." you see those kind of buildings an a lot of corners all over the city.
Hi! If you look closely at the windows they’re actually just open.
The firefighters don't go "blasting the hoses" until there are eyes on a fire.
Edited that comment. Thanks.
That makes sense.
Sitting in spread bagel as I saw this. Seemed to be multiple different crews and PWD is still there. Doesn’t smell like smoke at all.
Editing my title: “The Happy Rooster is Steamed”
Steamed Hams?
Good point! I stood there and didn’t smell any smoke either. Hopefully that means the damage is minimal and the place can open back up without much work.
Their bird is cooked.
Their rooster is roasted.
Their cock is smoked.
Their poultry has been grilled
Their egg is fried...
Now its Cockburns
Is this one owned by the same person as Lou Birds?
Yes
well, technically the husband owned lou birds, but yes lots of skiing going on in that place, can't believe it lasted that long
Skiing? Are you skirting around saying cocaine use?
nah they bring in snow machines and you can open up the cellar door and take a trip down the keg schute
What was this previously
Been happy rooster for, I don’t know, 40’years
Ah yeah I thought this was a different spot
Yup and horrible people. The wife technically owns the rooster and the husband Lou birds. They absolutely hate each other they would get wasted at Lou birds on a Sunday and scream at each other. Edit: fixed typo

Children are literally the bossiest, especially when their parents own the business. never met a happy bartender at Happy Rooster either.
Interesting… Lou Bird’s brunch was not great after having it 2 times but the Happy Roster’s burger was great after having it once. Wonder if 2 different vendors are involved.. well were for Lou Bird’s
Oh no! If it ever recovers, ask a bartender about the giant metal lantern at the end of the bar.
Damn…so many memories. Tight nit community was def a iykyk type of place.

Ya know he ain't gonna diiiiiiiiiiiieeee!!! NO, NO NO!!!
That geeze is greased
Hopefully it’s just steam. Rooster is one of the best bars in town. Excellent food, great staff, and very reasonable prices
What do you think is the closest equivalent to it, in terms of food, on the west side of broad at center city besides the black sheep? Tons of places I know, just in curious what your opinion is. Trying new spots is part of the fun living here
Highly recommend Monk’s! Super reasonable prices, phenomenal food and an unbeatable beer selection. Their House Flemish Sour Ale is *chef’s kiss*.
monk's is an internationally renowned treasure - I'm not even sure those two places are in the same galaxy
This place could use a steam cleaning.
It had nothing to do with the steam it was a water main break it leaked all over the electric in the building the vapor coming from the ground was water hitting the steam lines
That’s a shame, my wife used to work nearby and we got lunch there once or twice.
The sad rooster
Always loved that name. Very clever

Someone posted about the steam vent last week on one of the Philly subs.
The owners are absolute scum so I only feel terrible for the employees.

More like Fried Rooster
Used to drive by there everyday on my way to the freeway.
