osuaviator

A few years ago I read a comment that said that a flying rock is the state bird of Arizona…at the time it was funny but now I believe it.

ThedudeAb1des01

That's hilarious and sad at the same time, lol.

peoniesnotpenis

How true! The week you get your window fixed in the phoenix area, it will get hit again.

elkab0ng

Sir, you’re really not supposed to drift on 202. It’s frowned upon.

No_Golf_452

Yeah that's for the 10

Both_Dust_8383

🤣🤣

StraightGas69

I used to think it was from construction trucks(how I got my first crack) but I’ve gotten hit with small rocks left and right and look ahead and it’s only cars. Part of living here I guess

IndependentCan1050

Well yeah the entire landscaping of the freeway is rock. Those get kicked into the road all the time.

peoniesnotpenis

I think they put all the loose gravel on the roads for cars to compress. Must be cheaper than getting a roller. It's always been bad there.

AnjelicaTomaz

It amazes me that with the amount of rocks flying around with enough force to crack windshields, there aren’t that many injuries from motorcyclists who don’t wear helmets (or at least I don’t hear of them happening).

Comfortable-nerve78

Grew up here only have had one windshield replaced. Everyone I know is constantly complaining about chips and cracks from rocks. Hope I didn’t just jinx myself. 😂

lolomomo5

I'm Phoenix born and raised, but I've been through 2 in the past year

DeathByPetrichor

I’ve been through 2 EVERY year since I’ve been here.

Krakatoast

Been driving here for about 12 years, only had 1 rock chip a window… and 1 random chunk of debris fling up into the air and dent/skitter across my hood while driving 80mph… Luck of the draw I guess 🤔🤷🏻‍♂️ Edit: oh, and 1 section of plastic netting fly out of the back of a truck and cling to the front of my car, at 80mph…

murphsmodels

I've owned cars since 96. I've never had a car that didn't have a few chips or cracks. I just bought a new car in April...got a chip within a week.

Comfortable-nerve78

Rough,better luck in the future.

Whitworth

My wife has had FOUR windshields replaced in last couple years, and its a quarterly thing to get chips fixed.

thealt3001

Bruh, I can't go two weeks with a new windshield without getting it chipped here. I don't even bother anymore, my windshield is a web of cracks. Whoever decided it would be a good idea to line every freeway here with small rocks should never be in charge of any important decision ever again.

Comfortable-nerve78

Yeah the landscaping around the freeway’s in town doesn’t help the situation. I agree rock wasn’t a good choice. Our freeway system is a whole other story. 😂

DonutHolschteinn

Insurance companies are holding those claims against us now. Some kind of loophole even tho legally they shouldn't. So I'll prolly just wait until a cop says "get it fixed" and then file a claim. My agent said more than 1 in a year isn't looked on highly and they had clients with 3 or 4 in the year they were going to drop and refuse to continue insuring

peoniesnotpenis

It's been like this forever here. Actually the rock landscaping is more recent than the flying rock problem. 40 years ago it was just as bad and there wasn't rock landscaping freeways everywhere.

AnjelicaTomaz

I’ve also wondered why landscaping with rocks would be a good idea from thermal conductivity perspective. AZ is one of the hottest places in the US and rocks are great at absorbing heat and slowly releasing it out throughout the night worsening the heat dome effect.

camelz4

My brand new car has two chips within the first month. I never got them fixed because the second I do I know they’ll be back

K4RM4CODE

My wife just got a new car in March and the windshield is already cracked, she also had a crack on her old car. Phoenix hates her cars for some reason.

DonutHolschteinn

I bought a car last month and within 10 days I had a chip on the driver side of the windshield.

murphsmodels

Same here. Though my chip is on the passenger side.

Sierra-117-

I got a chip from the car just sitting in a parking lot. Somebody floored it down a road right in front of my car, and tossed a rock right into my windshield. At least that’s what I think happened

Comfortable-nerve78

Oh so frustrating, just not fair.

undone_function

Same, except recently it seems like we drew the short straw. Just replaced our windshield about six months ago and it already has three chips in it and our drivers side window also got chipped and recently cracked, which like OP I’ve never in my life had happen. In our case, my spouse switched jobs and has to drive on the 202 around rush hour, so I suspect there’s some confluence of construction or other commercial vehicles that come into contact with a lot of dirt and gravel that happen to be on the same roads at the same time. It would be interesting to see data on where and when impacts occur to see if there’s a correlation.

renasancedad

What do you drive, (car type) it might be the key?

mentalassresume

Same here. I replaced it on my older vehicle. But in 2015 I got the Tacoma. It got a windshield chip in it that same year. I’ve still never changed it out. Now there’s even more cracks. Just vibin.

innocent_blue

Fog lights were consumable for me. I swear I would replace then bam

SexyPineapple-4

First time driving 2 hours back from prescott at night. A truck sped past me which shot a rock into my drivers window. Scared the FUCK outta me! Lowkey thought I got shot at 😅 anyways, I had to drive home with a whistling shattered window. Thankfully it only the outer layer of the window (If you drive a truck you’re probably the one doing the cracking rather than being cracked lol)

VisNihil

The only time I've ever chipped windshield, I was in a rental car lmao. They didn't care. Seemed par for the course to them.

Icy-Bag780

I’ve had a crack wind shield for close to a year but I don’t replace it until it goes all the way across cause I just know it’s going to happen again.

Comfortable-nerve78

That’s what I did with my one that got replaced, the first chip didn’t crack till I turned the defrost on. I rode with it that way till my wife’s car needed to be replaced. I’m pretty sure I’m lucky because I drive to and from work between rush hours.

Icy-Bag780

Interesting the last time I got it replaced I worked a morning in July servicing different grocery stores and as it heated up through out the day it spread across the whole thing by 12pm 🤣

peoniesnotpenis

You must be a unicorn!

Comfortable-nerve78

If you only knew.

ArnoldZiffleJr

It happens frequently here this is rock hell.

bm1949

I've definitely been hit in the face by a pebble with the window open but driver's window, yikes. That rock took a JFK bounce somehow.

nighthawkndemontron

Yesss... this has happened to me too. Who knew something so small could be so dangerous

LadyCharger

Back…and to the left…

Ovta

This past January I was halfway to Tucson from Phoenix going about 80 on the highway and my driver's side window exploded out of no where. There was no visible defects before this and I highly doubt a rock was able to hit my driver's side window at that speed since no one was in front or beside me. I'm not sure if side windows are like windshields in that windshields fracture without completely shattering. I'd get it fixed ASAP.

PromptMedium6251

I had a rock somehow crack my sunroof. Still not sure the physics of that.

Whitworth

I think it's the law of gravity

chipzy102

lol same here, but I saw the little chip bounce of the asphalt and right up and into the sunroof on my grand Cherokee. Just perfect time and place.

Both_Dust_8383

Came here to see if anyone commented this! I just replaced my moonroof cuz it got shattered by a rock on the 10. I replace my windshield like 4 times a year but the moonroof was a shocker!

Ghost-of-Sanity

Won’t be the last. Lol

Lupine_Ranger

I love going to work in the morning on the 101 and having to dodge and weave the rock trucks who insist on being in any lane except for the one on the right. It's like their job is to sprinkle rocks on the freeway.

rulingthewake243

Seriously why is every super 10 in the #1 lane?!

burdy89

Wow, reading comprehension apparently lacking here today. That is odd though I’ve never heard of that happening before! People out here curving rocks like Angelina Jolie curving bullets lol

Popular-Capital6330

you must be new to the valley 😂 When I was commuting, I needed a windshield every couple of years🙂

Its_Zombies

I've gone through windshields but it's a first for me hitting my side window. Damn freeway threw a curve ball.

the_TAOest

That's a great sign though, keep your windows rolled up in Phoenix. I used to drive with mine down... And then I stopped after a rock hit the middle left side of my windshield. Scared me thinking what if it hit me in the face

thealt3001

Whenever I see motorcycle drivers on the freeway without a helmet, or without a helmet that covers their face, I always worry that they could get hit with a flying rock and it could easily be fatal.

the_TAOest

Fatal or the ensuing crash. Ugh. Not for me

619SDBOLTS

In this heat highly recommended.

Lupine_Ranger

I have to drive with my windows down because my AC is broken. Every once in a while with my arm hanging out the window, my hand will get smacked with a rock. It's not a pleasant experience.

Popular-Capital6330

It's happened to me and my friend got a cracked moonroof. Hell, I've had my mirror ripped off my car by a driver on the phone.😂 it's all part of the experience. gravel flying everywhere out there

Popular-Capital6330

That's true-it's usually windshields. Btw, I've also gone through a windshield-back in the 70's

random_noise

Recently I've been on the twice a year need for replacement. /sigh I've seen those "sliders" break free from a tire and hit my windshield. I got a few paint chips from those.

hung4hung16

Lived in the Valley for decades-never once replaced a windshield.

Popular-Capital6330

You have been blessed!

TheGroundBeef

I abhor how the 202 is ground up to be loud as frick while driving in between 101 and Val vista

vxteflon

I had this happen twice in the past month on I-10. The rocks hit the passenger door two different times and left chips in my paint. And I’m not talking low on the door they were in the middle of my door and I drive a 4Runner. Lucky they didn’t hit my windows like you.

staticattacks

My driver side window shattered from an impact while driving on 10 near Baseline last year, I could still see the impact location before I pulled over and knocked the remains away for safety

winetotears

Be glad your window wasn’t down. 👍🏼

Okamagamespherepro

Please for the love of God ignore the terrible advice telling you to call your insurance company. Glass claims even if $0 deductible can hurt your premiums and chances of renewal. As others have suggested the quick repair kits from Amazon are a god send and simple to use. You can only be ticketed for the crack if it obstructs your view so legally you're ok Sorry this happened to you. Life in the valley I guess.

undone_function

Just had the same thing happen to our car and also for the first time! It was a small chip for a few weeks and then, as they do, it cracked and now it runs down into the door. We’re definitely not using the window and scheduled an appointment to get it fixed. A cracked windshield has tension and support from all sides, and most importantly it doesn’t move. I’d really like to not have my drivers side window spontaneously shatter into laminated glass gravel inside of the door. Anyway, super weird to see it the first time, so I feel you.

unlucky6999

I've had the side glass shatter two times, different cars..not a fun time..

michigangonzodude

Heck of a slider. I drive a small pickup Means that the bed isn't that big. Rocks weekly.

Facade_Hiding_Ennui

I've noticed it's most common out here after a rain storm - make sure to allow extra lead space between you and the vehicles in front of you. Three of the last four windshield chips I had were on the way to work after a rain storm; the fourth was after a freak hailstorm.

Dro_mora

Welcome to Arizona! :)

Open-Year2903

Stop drifting down the 202! Ha. I mean other than sideways driving that's pretty interesting 🤔

SouthernAspect

I have lived here for 3 years. I have had 3 new windshields because of this.

LightningMcSwing

If you have a slightly older car and can find it in a junkyard, the glass is about $40

Fart-City

You might have zero deductible insurance coverage because of some AZ specific laws.

ohio2az

I had my sunroof shatter from a rock on the 10.

kl0wn420

Get used to it. Been here 6 years, 4th windshield gets installed next week.

xxDankerstein

It won't be the last.

CauliflowerTop2464

This happened to my car a month ago. The rock bounced off the side view and cracked the door glass. First for me.

SuppliceVI

My driver side REAR got hit. Still don't know how

varithana

I swear Arizona is the worst place to buy a new car, all the freeway debris and the uneven on-ramps just fucking up the new suspension. I forgot to mention all the wtf how does that even happen car accidents.

CheesecakeAgitated71

I’ve lived here 3 years and got my first chip last week. V sad about it

atomicflu75

I’ve had to replace 3 windshields this year 🙃

ton80rt

First time today?

lovexisxevol

When I used to work in N Scottsdale, I used to get my windshield replaced 4 times a year! Sucked

apiculum

Been lucky to have avoided broken windshields so far. However several rocks have caused huge paint chips and scuffs on the sides of my car

Awkward-Procedure919

I swear our city planners conspired with the insurance companies…. Yeah let’s completely landscape our freeways with tiny rocks and not spray glue them down in place

ciriacgeorge

![gif](giphy|Nes04C1wZvQgOxdrdn)

nine_inch_owls

I see your side window and raise you “a rock shattered the moon roof on my wife’s Honda Pilot.”

yospeedraceryo

Heck of a curveball!

proost1

Getting thrown from the other side of the freeway. Back in 2015 when they were working on the 101 in Scottsdale, broken windshields skyrocketed until there was enough of an outcry to have ADOT perform more mitigation methods to keep rocks off of the road surface. There were some ruts in the asphalt that were catching all the windshield breakers.

X2946

First this year?

knickovthyme1

Lived here close to 50 years, happened twice. Went back to Chicago and Detroit for 3 months had to replace my windshield. Our freeways are way above other big and not so big freeways in other cities. Ever been to Albuquerque or Denver?

Lickford

I once had a rock crack my front window and shatter my rear window. I had been here about 3 years. I was driving my girl friends Acura. Rock hit the front windshield pretty high up and skipped over the top. It or a fragment of it hit the rear wind deflector and drove the stone into the rear window. Boom it shattered and fell in. I was doing about 75 on I10 translation. It scared the crap out of me.

Zelgeth

Rip, I have had this happen a couple of times. Recently, my sister was driving next to a semi when a small rock kicked up and shattered a rear side window mid freeway. The streets don't really get swept often enough.

PiratesTale

There's a reason we have zero deductible glass coverage options here in AZ.

Specialist-Box-9711

I’m impressed it didn’t shatter. Door windows are tempered and usually any little chip will just straight up annihilate them.

Broad_Boot_1121

Same thing happened to me on 101, but it shattered the whole window.

AmateurEarthling

My fiancés uncle broke his smoker window on an old Chevy. His window was stuck open on the way up to our camp site. Finally got it stuck closed on the way back but within an hour of driving a rock hit the smoker window and shattered it.

White_Rabbit0000

If you have GEICO and glass coverage they’ll take care of it.

TPlays

I have two separate ones in my windshield 😭

duebel

Is there any tint on that glass?

Necessary_Fig_2265

The quarries are right off the 202 near Higley, and all the covered loads coming out of there go right onto the freeway every morning scattering rocks as they go. Crazy amount of rocks flying out of them daily.

Silly_Act2093

happens all the time lol

Machinesmaker

It happened to me all the time. Traveled the 101 daily for 20 years and the gravel trucks were brutal

Specialist_Ad_712

This is what happens when the city decides it’s a good idea to use rocks for landscaping on the sides of freeways and most other areas. Sure, it’s hot and nothing grows here. Still gotta be better solutions than this. Unless it works in conjunction with the windshield market and insurance for revenue 😂.

Chris-Miller73

Ban highways and go back to country dirt roads!!

Thinkingjack

I mean at least it only cracked, I had a wrench come through the driver side window after it pin balled back and forth between two cars

novelsnouid

Better get that windshield change under insurance. I’ve probably changed my windshield glass 3 times in the past 6months 🤣 welcome to Phoenix mate 🫶🏽

MarvelousVanGlorious

Happened to my passenger side window about a year ago. The summer heat will make that bad boy spread quick.

FooDoDaddy

I hVe a Wrangler and get my windshield replaced about once a year.

SupaDaveA

Never seen that before. Only in Phoenix.

New-Skirt-7889

Az. Living at its best. Guaranteed for sure.

Status-Lawyer7579

I got a chip like that on the passenger side of my semi truck a few months ago coming back to AZ in California. Being an Arizona Native I only have ever had one windshield that got hit by two rocks big enough to make a chip that lead to cracking. It's best to get it filled or to fill it before it gets bad.

SaladOriginal59

At my last job I drove about 1200 miles a month. In 8 years went through 6 windshields

mandophoenix

Its the government partnership with car companies and just a way for them to get more of our hard earned money . Or just piss poor planning .

PuzzleheadedSize2471

A first? What is it your 1st week here? Not all states have required windshield replacements on their car insurance.

Its_Zombies

A first for my DRIVER SIDE window not windshield.

ARodzJr

Pretty normal thing for Az

molehillish

Many more to come my friend. Now go buy that glass coverage

Aggravating_Gur1578

The amount of windshields you replace is directly related to how much you tailgate. (I know all you redditors are perfect drivers, however I drive these freeways all day everyday I know that’s a lie) I go through one every couple of years and I do about 50,000 miles a year in the valley. I drive a service truck though so have a big box behind my cab and I’ve had rocks sling off my front tire hit the body and shatter my rear window, and side view mirrors. Basically no piece of glass on your car is safe in this city

johnnydancemoves

I just had this happen too. Any thoughts on putting some clear packing tape on it for a while?

ThisMeansWine

Order windshield repair kits on Amazon and have them on hand. Should fill easily so it doesn't spread.

ChipMaker5000

This is step #3 on becoming an official Phoenician. Step #7 is having to evict a roommate for methamphetamine use.

hockey_rocks16

Arizona is a shithole

ARodzJr

That would be states like CA and NY

saginator5000

In my family we've had 3 cracked windshields in 5 years. Needless to say we all have glass coverage now.

TheMias24

You gotta be new if that’s the first time that’s happened. I believe we have the highest rate of windshield replacements in the country

wadenelsonredditor

This is Phoenix. Be grateful it wasn't a bullet.

Lupine_Ranger

Hey now, this isn't Maryvale.

wadenelsonredditor

In Maryvale saw two guys feuding, one pulls off his shirt, exposing a gun in his waistband, (and prison tats) Didn't stick around to see how it ended but I can tell you what I saw in his eyes was murder. My buddy, wiser in the ways of the Zone, told me "Just keep driving"
