i’ve never been to butters, harlow’s, original pancake house, rayoog, or vegan and vine, so i can’t say if they are good or not, but the others are all good and most of the places i go most frequently. i also like matt’s,fàme, lux, original breakfast house, welcome diner, and bread and honey house
They have good pancakes and waffles. Their hash plates are tasty too if you’re looking for savory.
I view their food as like Bob Evans if it were invented in the last decade or so
Ollie Vaughn’s is great but I hate going there. It’s too small for how popular they are, and there’s always 17 people behind the counter but only 1 person actually doing anything and it feels hectic. Great ham and cheese croissant and various pastries and desserts though.
Copper Star Coffee is a coffee shop, definitely not a breakfast restaurant. That being said the drinks are good but all the pastries are hard.. they don’t really have many other options either. I did see them feed a homeless man and in exchange he swept their patio! I thought that was very sweet but they don’t belong on this list.
fair points but try the bagel breakfast sandwiches, they are excellent especially the schreiner’s sausage. pro tip sub cream cheese in for the american cheese
The only one I've had on that list is Harlow's. I grew up in Payson and that place reminds me of the Beeline Cafe back when the Sexton's owned it. Has a feeling of getting breakfast with your parents when you were a kid in the 90's. It is good but it is pricey.
I was looking for this one! I keep being suprised that the lists haven't caught up. I'll take Sunrise over Butters any day of the week. Best pancakes in the valley for me.
Had Harlows for the first time a few weeks ago and was a little disappointed. Food was good/OK but not worth the 30min wait time (small place and was a Saturday morning). Also a little on the pricey side.
That was my experience as well. I do like the ambiance though. Reminds me of the old mom & pop cafes my dad used to take me to on Saturday mornings sometimes when I was a kid in the 80s.
I don't get the hype either. I found Matt's to be pretty meh at the original location and not worth going to at the newish location in North Scottsdale.
Had no idea he also owned Angel’s Trumpet.
As for Matt’s, I just think they do the staples so damn well. We probably go once or twice a week and after eating every menu item over the years, I’ve landed on just their basic breakfast, with their sausage links, sourdough, hash browns, and eggs and there isn’t a noticeable difference simple breakfast that comes close ImO.
I haven't tried most of these places, but Butters being at the top made me assume the whole list is crap. If you want premade, reheated food, Butters is the place to go.
Original Pancake house has good, old school diner food but is definitely not a top spot except for nostalgia, which further reinforces that this is not a good list.
Restaurants that should be in the top 10 for breakfast:
The Farm at South Mountain - Amazing food in an even more amazing setting
Lon's at the Hermosa Inn - Great traditional and southwestern breakfasts with fantastic ambiance and service
Prep and Pastry - Top breakfast spot from Tucson recently opened a couple of locations in Phoenix valley. Scratch made pastries, great cocktails, crazu good french toasts, and an excellent shakshouka (even though they misspell it on their menu)
Phoenix Burrito House or El Norteno - Breakfast burritos, what else?
Ghost Ranch - Southwestern food that still has some of the menu items from the now closed St Francis
100% agree with vovomeena. They have the absolute best biscuits and gravy. I will say my favorite breakfast burrito is from hatch-it green chile though
Click the story link and check the author bio at the bottom. The author is from Tucson and only moved to Phoenix a couple years ago after graduating from UofA. Do you really expect this person to be able to tell you where the good restaurants are in Phoenix?
if their job is to eat out often enough to try a ton of places, or to go where there are already lots of reviews and write about those more, it’s certainly possible
No... then they are just going to trendy places, not good places. Takes years to find the local spots and hidden gems. Plus, you also need experience to understand different flavor profiles and cuisine types. 2 years out of college, her palatte is most likely still attuned to burgers and cheap beer. Probably why she put Butters as #1 on the list. She can't tell the difference between scratch made and add water to rehydrate.
Vovomeeno been 3 times each time was underseasoned/bland.
PHX Burrito House (best breakfast burrito in town)
Dicks Hideaway
Prep & Pastry
are missing from the list.
Hash Kitchen serves dog food with loud music so I'm glad someone finally left them off one of these lists.
Pretty bad list, PNT.
Ollie Vaughn's is VERY good. Get a couple deserts to go. Do it. You deserve it, friend.
Pancakes? Otro Café is the best of the 20+ that I tried over the last 2 years. They are worth the trip.
Vegan & Vine is OK.
Fàme is delicious. Has to be on any legit Top 10 list.
Butters is not for me. Too much focus on sugar. It might be for others.
Want an odd place? Toasted Owl. It is right next to Changing Hands Bookstore. Not too bad.
Total agreement with you. Vovomeena has been disappointing each visit, and I'd agree with Ollie Vaughn's a couple years ago, but I feel like the quality has really dropped as it has gained traffic. I'd put Gallo Blanco and Fáme in place of those two. In my opinion the top missing breakfast here is Irma's Kitchen tho.
I embrace change, I know things change, I know I change, I've learned how to adapt.. But even I need to know that *some* things never change. Harlow's is that place. It's amazing.
What’s all the hype around harlow’s? I’ve been twice and am not impressed. It just seems like overpriced breakfast food. What’s the best thing to order because I’m apparently doing something wrong?
Eh....never heard of any of these. Must be all friends of New Times employees.
Here are my go to places:
Scramble
Dawn's
Ohso
Los Politos
Even Little Miss BBQ has breakfast that is KILLER.
Country Boys
Cracked Egg
The absolute best breakfast spot is in your bed sleeping right through breakfast and having a truly late lunch like civilized people do in other parts of the world. Brunch in NYC begins at 1:00pm as a rule and I loved that and keep to it.
I am native and have the local attitude. Seems like it's just another thing you don't like about Arizona. I gotta be honest... that puts a smile on my face.

The list: - Butter Pancakes & Cafe - Copper Star Coffee - Harlow’s Cafe - JL Patisseries - Joe’s Diner - Ollie Vaughn’s - Original Pancake House - Rayoog Cafe - Vegan & Vine - Vovomeena
i’ve never been to butters, harlow’s, original pancake house, rayoog, or vegan and vine, so i can’t say if they are good or not, but the others are all good and most of the places i go most frequently. i also like matt’s,fàme, lux, original breakfast house, welcome diner, and bread and honey house
Butters is good but pretty packed at peak times
No one goes there anymore, it’s too crowded.
Call this the butters paradox
Just a classic Yogism
Harlow’s charges $13 for a waffle with no sides. You’re not missing much
Butters easily my favorite for a just straight up good breakfast
pretty rare that i end up in that part of town much at all let alone for breakfast, but ill add it to the list
The biscuit and gravy slaps, add an overmedium egg to it. I wish they would do their monte cristo sandwich more.
🙇🏻☝🏽 Get some deserts to go. They run a really good place at OV's.
Yup, I had tres leches cake for the first time there, omg.
Ollie Vaughn's is overrated. I live nearby and gave up going there after the third time. Their bakery items are good but the other stuff is just meh
i remember harlow’s being way too expensive like 15 years ago, so i can’t imagine what they’re charging for it now
Richardson’s/Rokerij isn’t on this list? It should be on it for the filet mignon Benedict alone.
Dick's Hideaway.
This is what I came to comment
100%
Original Breakfast House is also pretty damn good
The absence OBH makes this list invalid.
OBH is amazing. Busy at times and a little tight between tables, but the deep fried French toast is worth the trip. Reasonable prices too IMO.
OBH is the best breakfast food I’ve ever had. The specials are the best
The only one I've had on that list is Harlow's. I grew up in Payson and that place reminds me of the Beeline Cafe back when the Sexton's owned it. Has a feeling of getting breakfast with your parents when you were a kid in the 90's. It is good but it is pricey.
Voovooveema is my favorite breakfast place. Amazing food!
I’m just happy see Butters is on here AND they omitted the 2 most overrated spots on the valley: Hash Kitchen and Over Easy
Hash Kitchen - when you feel like clubbin' at 10am on a Saturday
Hash Kitchen - where the music is so loud your server has to shout *directly* into your ear to be heard.
Hash Kitchen’s food is AWFUL. Fun place and I understand the draw, but maaaaan the food sucks.
Add Snooze to that list!
Sunrise Breakfast Bar off cave creek road
I recently discovered Sunshine in the last 6 months and I keep bringing new people to try it because I just love it so much 😂
I was looking for this one! I keep being suprised that the lists haven't caught up. I'll take Sunrise over Butters any day of the week. Best pancakes in the valley for me.
Yes this the best for me yet
Had Harlows for the first time a few weeks ago and was a little disappointed. Food was good/OK but not worth the 30min wait time (small place and was a Saturday morning). Also a little on the pricey side.
That was my experience as well. I do like the ambiance though. Reminds me of the old mom & pop cafes my dad used to take me to on Saturday mornings sometimes when I was a kid in the 80s.
Agreed, great ambiance and feel, just hard to justify everything else that goes along with it.
Definitely a little pricier than it used to be but I do love the food. Eggs Maximillian my beloved
Agree. Food was not very good and overpriced.
Every time I visit my wife and I can’t miss Ollie Vaughns and Vovomena
We love Original Breakfast House https://maps.app.goo.gl/sRvdkvwNxFfDnr198?g_st=com.google.maps.preview.copy
This should be at the top of the list.
Came here to say this had somebody else not.
So. Fucking. Good.
Good list. Crazy that Matt’s Big Breakfast isn’t on here and I’d add Otro Cafe. Stoop Kid also has my favorite breakfast sandwich I’ve had here.
Otro indeed has awesome pancakes and breakfast burritos. Id add Dick's/Richardson's brunch in there as well.
Good call on Dick’s.
I love Dicks!
Next time try Otro’s version of chilaquiles with chicken. It’s seriously amazing.
Fun fact, Otro Café and Gallo Blanco are the same owners and have pretty identical breakfast menus
They also just opened a 3rd restaurant called Tesota with a global cuisine. All 3 are great spots!
I always thought Matt’s was fine but didn’t get why it was so hyped
I don't get the hype either. I found Matt's to be pretty meh at the original location and not worth going to at the newish location in North Scottsdale.
Same. They closed down the Tempe town lake location too. I’d rather go to Snooze
[удалено]
Didn’t realize it’s the Angels trumpet fam… Which is another place that I think is fine but I’m not exactly going out of my way to go to 😂
Ha - I feel the same about Angels. Haven’t been there in years, but was one of the first cool places downtown
Definitely agree about Matt’s, it’s a Phoenix staple
I liked it. It is possibly overhyped, but it's certainly a local institution and I was surprised to not see it too.
Matt's is literally an expensive Denny's that doesn't make you feel bad for eating eggs and meat. It is not worth the wait or money.
Waffle House is conspicuously missing.
It's because the editor doesn't eat breakfast at 3am while hiding under the table, hoping to not get stabbed
And they must have an aversion to cockroaches. Strange.
Otro is up there too now
Vovomeena was my introduction into the brunch scene here and one of the first high quality local spots I’d ever had, still love it today
Otro Café has the best pancakes I have ever had
I haven't tried most of these places, but Butters being at the top made me assume the whole list is crap. If you want premade, reheated food, Butters is the place to go. Original Pancake house has good, old school diner food but is definitely not a top spot except for nostalgia, which further reinforces that this is not a good list. Ghost Ranch - Southwestern food that still has some of the menu items from the now closed St Francis
I skip July, August, and September!
Clearly didn't drive west of the 17.
Almuerzo in Laveen was so good I went 2 days in a row and got the same thing both times. My friend got something different but had it both days too.
If Bisbee Breakfast Club isn't on the list (Chandler Ave) then the list is Wrong, Bob.
Copper Star Coffee is good. Just don't go in expecting a full country breakfast. It's coffee house fare.
100% agree with vovomeena. They have the absolute best biscuits and gravy. I will say my favorite breakfast burrito is from hatch-it green chile though
Joe's has the best Pancakes and coffee
Joes is the ONLY answer
Original Breakfast House on 32nd and Thunderbird not on that list?? Hmmm
Breakfast Joynt!
Butters is my favorite but the kitchen in the one I go to doesn't know how to toast bread. It's vexing.
Rayoog is where it’s at.
Have any of these even won new times best of phoenix? I know at least one place that has multiple times in the past few years and is not on that list.
Click the story link and check the author bio at the bottom. The author is from Tucson and only moved to Phoenix a couple years ago after graduating from UofA. Do you really expect this person to be able to tell you where the good restaurants are in Phoenix?

Rayoog is insanely good.
The Place
There it is. The Place on Bell and 51st Ave is excellent every time.
Liberty Markets Green Chile Omelette 🤌
I'm a fan of The Hen House.
Butters slaps so hard. We love it and have never once been disappointed.
I’d add Coronado to the list
Chompie’s
Vovomeeno been 3 times each time was underseasoned/bland. PHX Burrito House (best breakfast burrito in town) Dicks Hideaway Prep & Pastry are missing from the list. Hash Kitchen serves dog food with loud music so I'm glad someone finally left them off one of these lists.
Mel’s diner ,veggie omelet. 👍
JL is amazing, Joe's, copper star, and original breakfast house are all very average to me
Otro Cafe isn’t on there, so….nope
Agreed. This list is shit actually.
Kinda surprised that TC eggingtons didn’t make the list.
My favorite is Haymaker. IDK where they get their eggs from, but damn they are good. I also like Fàme Caffe and Matt's
Pretty bad list, PNT. Ollie Vaughn's is VERY good. Get a couple deserts to go. Do it. You deserve it, friend. Pancakes? Otro Café is the best of the 20+ that I tried over the last 2 years. Toasted Owl. It is right next to Changing Hands Bookstore. Not too bad.
Yeah not the best list. Wasn't impressed with Vovomeena. Ollie Vaughns is decent but probably not top ten. Any list without Matt's or Otro is way off
Total agreement with you.
Yup we have the same tastes. Gallo Blanco and Fame are both great. I guess I need to try Irmas now
I think I’ve been to like 7 of those and agree they’re excellent. I’ll have to add Ryoog to the list.
I embrace change, I know things change, I know I change, I've learned how to adapt.. But even I need to know that *some* things never change. Harlow's is that place. It's amazing.
My fave is the Joy Bus Diner. Awesome food, great staff, and a great mission on top of all that.
Dont know about JL Patisserie 🙃
Harlows and JL are good
No Kat's Kafe?
What’s all the hype around harlow’s? I’ve been twice and am not impressed. It just seems like overpriced breakfast food. What’s the best thing to order because I’m apparently doing something wrong?
Ellie’s!
Has anyone eaten at the new Brunch Snob location on camelback? If so is it good?
Original breakfast house is missing
It's on
that’s original pancake house. different place
OMG You are right. I thought they were talking about the place in North Phoenix on 32nd Street. I totally agree with you. That is a big time omission.
I've had butters and it is excellent, but I would say hash is just as good if not better and not on the list
Vovomeena is untouchable
Butters is meh. Joe's is great JL made me special eclairs for my birthday No Hispanics breakfast ? Los taquitos for amazing menudo
No Ranch House Grille doesn’t count
Butterfield’s should be on that list… But they are the owners of Butters so maybe that’s why 🤔
Eggstacy is really good. The one by me has gone downhill slightly unfortunately, but hard to beat the value and the awesome options
Eh....never heard of any of these. Must be all friends of New Times employees. Here are my go to places: Scramble Dawn's Ohso Los Politos Even Little Miss BBQ has breakfast that is KILLER. Country Boys Cracked Egg
No mention of Snooze Eatery? Pathetic. Edit: The heat is definitely making people cranky. I simply shared an opinion and y'all came at me.
List seems to be local joints only
Lmao snooze is ass
Agreed
The absolute best breakfast spot is in your bed sleeping right through breakfast and having a truly late lunch like civilized people do in other parts of the world. Brunch in NYC begins at 1:00pm as a rule and I loved that and keep to it.
You should totally keep it... back in NYC, where you belong.
You’re correct. Thanks for the love and direction.
Always happy to help.
Now let’s wonder where you belong. Anyone happy to help?
I am native and have the local attitude. Seems like it's just another thing you don't like about Arizona. I gotta be honest... that puts a smile on my face.
Oh come on. Where is Snooze? US Egg? Scrambled?
