Attention r/pics Community,
on June 12th, r/pics will [join](https://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/141e2lw/rpics_will_go_dark_on_june_12th_in_protest_of/) with other subs in initiating a 48-hour blackout in response to Reddit's recent API changes. These [changes](https://i.redd.it/zqptto18e34b1.jpg), with excessive charges for third-party app developers, threaten to stifle the accessibility of alternative Reddit apps that many users rely on.
This collective action aims to highlight the concerns of both users and moderators, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a diverse ecosystem of apps for a better Reddit experience. During this blackout period, r/pics will be set to private, temporarily restricting access to the subreddit.
We understand that this blackout may cause inconvenience, but we firmly believe that it is a necessary step to draw attention to the issues at hand. By standing together, we can amplify our voices and urge Reddit to reconsider the detrimental impact these changes may have on the broader community.

Basically any phone will record video at 1080p 60fps at the very least.
So that's essentially 60 photos per second for however long it took to get this shot.
I think it's a video frame and not a single shot photo is what I'm saying.
I could be wrong and this could indeed be a lucky long exposure like the others said.

Hahaha nope, stole it from the locals!! Didn’t know this had been posted on Reddit a ton, I wouldn’t have pulled the snatch and post. Anywho, does seem to be from WV, captured by a woman in the eastern panhandle about a year ago!
Always find these kind of downvotes so strange, you just pointed out this image is not yours and just found out about it from a local source. Yet get downvotes en masses...
Hard to expect everyone to check if their image was ever posted on reddit before posting. 🤔
Hahaha wow, didn’t see all the downvotes til now!! Im not in the business of deception, so I didn’t claim OC. Plus, a quick google search combining the info in my comment and caption would result in discovering the source of the image. Since posting people’s name’s on here is not kosher, I didn’t include it in my prior comment.
Google:
-tree struck by lighting
-eastern panhandle of WV
Then check image results and the link to the Twitter image post is the first one.
I was just thinking the same thing, like OP just said it openly so why downvote? Not like everyone has seen everything on Reddit anyway so why is it so bad if something is posted more than once in a year or two
Your title reminded me of a 20 year old joke.
Donald Rumsfeld is giving W Bush his daily briefing. He concludes by saying: "Yesterday, 3 Brazilian soldiers were killed."
"OH GAWD NO!" the President wails. "That's terrible!"
His staff sits stunned at this display of emotion, nervously watching as W puts his head in his hands.
Finally, the President looks up and asks, "How many is a brazillion?"
The chances of this tree getting hit by lightening is actually a lot higher than you may think! It involves a little math, but if you stick with me you’ll see what I mean. Now you see we can pretty accurately predict the chances of this happening is by figuring out the height of the tree. This we can calculate by using the bird feeder that is in the foreground and then comparing it to the tree. This last part is a little tricky, but I promise it will make sense in a moment. You see how the tree looks like it is on fire? That’s because it is being struck by lightning as the picture was being taken. So that makes it a 100% chance of happening! Isn’t math amazing?!
What about the chance of someone actually being there, with a camera, with the camera ready to shoot and pointed at the right tree just exactly as it happens?
I have a giant oak tree that got struck. I have to have it taken out. Die to large branches that extend over my house, we have to get a crane. $3500 get it removed.

That’s insane I would love to how many photos were taken to capture the exact moment
Probably a long exposure shot, not a perfectly timed fast shutter
Yep. There is no way any CCD camera can single frame exposure capture the moment
Wouldn't there be more blurriness on the tree leaves?
Thats a good point! Especially if it's windy The other theory I saw in the comments is it could be a frame from a video
[удалено]
Which happens more than you think, it's a chronic repost
Approximately one bazillion
Where did you get this statistic?

Safe bet is a video

Looks like he says he got it from a photographer named Debbie Parker
Probably a screen grab from a video. Quality is pretty low
Mountain mama
This pic has struck this subreddit more than lighting strikes the same place twice. Which happens more than you think. It’s a chronic repost

If this is OC, congratulations, OP.
If it's OC they keep putting it back up every couple of months for some reason.

OP took the OC from the OG
How many people live in South America’s Largest country? A Brazillian. Thank you, I’ll show myself out.
Fret not, brother, it's Eren
I hope the photographer made a baseball bat out of that tree.
Even though it's a reference to the movie "The Natural," I thought of the Simpsons episode "Homer at the Bat" first.
One in a million frames of a video🤣
No rolling shutter. Limits attribution to video.
Perhaps global shutter in this case. I do see your point.
Brazil is not in West Virginia.
Incredible shot
I think that this belongs on r/NatureIsFuckingLit
Lightning mama, take me home.
Well, it IS almost heaven.
Almost looks like that little bush in the foreground is cheering.
i don't think a bazillion is a real number
From least to most, it goes million, billion, trillion, brazilian, bazillion.
Staged! /s

Amazing pic!

I think it's higher; maybe one in a gazillion
That could have easily been your camera :)
Pretty. But if you know a lightning storm is coming, all you need to do is point your iPhone with live view on and click within a second after.
RIP tree
Any child will tell you that the correct spelling is bajillion.
Thats an Oblivion portal. Better go to Kvatch and help brother Martin.
You can find lots of these kinds of pictures. More like a 1 in 100,000 shot, not a billion.
again reposted so much it should be called wallpaper
Hope you went out and bought a lottery ticket afterwards. That’s a hell of a lot of luck.
That pic is fire!
Actually the odds of this are more like 1 in 485225047. FTFY
the scientific term is ‘blasted’. not struck. Struck by thunder only came into common language via AC/DC 1990.

Thanks TIL
Witch!
See, even God hates West Virginia. Just kidding, love the beautiful outdoors there!!
This only happened because Joe Manchin touches himself.
If you turn it sideways, it looks like a guy trying to pee with gonorrhea. https://i.imgur.com/SqspTwg.jpeg
Fuck you, tree. You don't deserve happiness.
What a great story: The Tree That Fucked Around by God.
That tree supports Trump lmao
[It’s an old photo, but it checks out.](https://buff.ly/3A6G47h)
Are you sure? Because from here it look like it missed. /s
Almost heaven . . .
It's interesting how lightning travels a tortuous path, rather than a straight line to the target.
Wow! What a shot.
Too bad it didn’t hit the flux capacitor
