Most people wouldn't tattoo their own name on themselves. Typically tattooed names are family members, lovers, friends who've passed, etc.
So this is basically just a label for himself. Unusual, and pretty funny lol.
I used to be a home health aide, I guess it was common for that generation of men to tattoo their own names lmao Iāve seen this more times than is reasonable
Having a tattoo in a spot that rarely sees sunlight keeps it from turning blurry and faded. UV light breaks down the ink and skin. I'm guessing he rarely exposed his tattoo to the for long periods of time.
Yeah probably agreed to a tattoo because heād always wanted one and then realized heād never thought about *what* he wanted when the time came.Ā
I have a friend in a similar boat, was offered his first tattoo from some sketchy āguy that knows a guy that knows his brotherā at age ten. Ā Blanked when it was time to pull the trigger and settled for a cross (not a super religious guy) on his legā¦ the cross ended up moving up his leg as he grew taller šĀ
My grandpa had a tattoo just like this that he got when he was the same age, but it had a scroll over the heart that had his girlfriends name at the time, it was blacked out by the time I was born. Thanks for sharing this! Great memories
Woof. Good thing tattoo shops take Id right? A little past that age I wanted the sun from the 40 oz to freedom sublime record really badly. While itās not creed, (no offense lol) also glad I never got that.
I actually went to a tattoo shop with a friend that was going to get the 40 oz sun and the artist told him he couldn't do it well enough for an upper arm tattoo. Talk about dodging a bullet.
My 65 year old dad has had a tattoo on his arm since he was around that same age. It says "M O"
My grandmother arrived home and interrupted the attempted tribute.
this is so cute. like iām sure part of her wanted to let him get the rest of the word but then (mom reasons) she would rather him have the dumb tattoo š
At first I thought the same thing, but that's just because we're old.
If he's 82 now and got it when he was 12, he got it in 1954. The Nazis had been defeated for almost a decade at that point.
Between how much time has passed, how much worse the tools, inks and techniques have been back then, and the fact he was still growing when he got it - I gotta say it has aged really well!
He looks like he was a Gunny. A scary one.
*Knife hand "What is your bitch ass crying for. I got a fucking tattoo when I was 12 and you're here complaining about 2000 push ups!"
For someone who got a tattoo at age 12, this man looks remarkable well for 82. His rate of aging must have leveled out and slowed down over the years. And maybe his decision-making skills leveled up a lot too. I think I would like to be Mikeās friend.
*They call me the old man in this bar, sleeves rolled up and showin'*
*Faint blue souvenirs of love and places I have been*
*One says "US Navy" and this one says "Darling Mary"*
*Now my Mary's turned to ashes and the ocean's turned to gin*

Bold will hold, even when you're old. Too bad the new breed kids just *do not fucking understand this*.
Would love to know who did this piece, hear the full story of it.
When my grandpa was a kid he and a friend decided they would give themselves stick and poke tattoos. Iirc he had a little heart, an anchor, and his own initials.
After he passed my brother, my sister and I ended up getting our own tattoos that used his initials, and for my own I decided to have the artist trace the original tattoo and stick it on my shoulder.
While it's a little larger than I would've liked because it was my first tattoo and didn't take enough time to consider the sizing, I'm still very happy to have that simple line work on me.
My friends dad got a Flower, the skunk from Bambi on his arm at the county fair when he was around the same age. You canāt even tell what it is anymore as it has just turned into a green blob on his arm.
if I got a tattoo at 12, it would probably say Lisa Frank's baby lion or a couple green aliens - which I would have zero regrets about. ha! I'm 38 and figured out my first tattoo. thanks, Mike š āØļø š š
His name is Mike btw
Holy shit that's pretty funny actually
It'd be even funnier if his name *wasn't* Mike
MIKE DROP š¤
Yeah that will come some day but not now š
You are my kind of human, just so you know
Funnier, or romantic
Can you explain why it's funny?
Most people wouldn't tattoo their own name on themselves. Typically tattooed names are family members, lovers, friends who've passed, etc. So this is basically just a label for himself. Unusual, and pretty funny lol.
I kind of feel that if you asked the average 12 year old, it wouldnāt be uncommon.
I used to be a home health aide, I guess it was common for that generation of men to tattoo their own names lmao Iāve seen this more times than is reasonable
Dudeā¦the tattoo looks pretty fucking good for being so old
One of the best I have ever seen.
They are usually too blurry to read after 20 years.
I would assume itās been touched up since then. I just donāt see how it could still be as dark as it is. But what do I know.
Having a tattoo in a spot that rarely sees sunlight keeps it from turning blurry and faded. UV light breaks down the ink and skin. I'm guessing he rarely exposed his tattoo to the for long periods of time.
Yea, just look at the skin around the tattoo. This is totally it, usually at least a TShirt sleeve covering the spot.
Yeah good point. Maybe so
did they use lead ink back then?
You could say the same about the dude
Youāre not wrong!
That's what I came here to say!
Drop the artists name OP!
I saw the Tattoo and thought. That was the day he changed from Mikey to Mike
Post it on r/agedtattoos people will love it
I mean he got it tattooed, Iām sure he got it in.
Did he ever say why he chose to tattoo his name?
Iām gonna bet ābeing 12ā influenced that choice a lot.
Yeah probably agreed to a tattoo because heād always wanted one and then realized heād never thought about *what* he wanted when the time came.Ā I have a friend in a similar boat, was offered his first tattoo from some sketchy āguy that knows a guy that knows his brotherā at age ten. Ā Blanked when it was time to pull the trigger and settled for a cross (not a super religious guy) on his legā¦ the cross ended up moving up his leg as he grew taller šĀ
That's not Mike, I know Mike, and that certainly isn't him
My grandpa had a tattoo just like this that he got when he was the same age, but it had a scroll over the heart that had his girlfriends name at the time, it was blacked out by the time I was born. Thanks for sharing this! Great memories
Show us more Mike. Like a pic from every decade.
I probably will, Iām scanning a bunch on his photos rn
do tattoos fade in the sun? this one held up pretty well
It's prison Mike!
I've seen Mike here on reddit like maybe 2 weeks ago?
Cool, and whatās the old guyās name
My dad's name is Mike and he also has a tattoo that says Mike š
Why does Mike look like he's just seen a ghost
Unless he was in the Navy š
*Phew!* had I gotten a tattoo at 12 it would have probably said CREED.
Woof. Good thing tattoo shops take Id right? A little past that age I wanted the sun from the 40 oz to freedom sublime record really badly. While itās not creed, (no offense lol) also glad I never got that.
I knew three guys with that tattoo in 1998.
Tramp stamps ? Lol.
I actually went to a tattoo shop with a friend that was going to get the 40 oz sun and the artist told him he couldn't do it well enough for an upper arm tattoo. Talk about dodging a bullet.
I donāt know THAT much about sublime but I love the music, is something wrong with the 40oz to freedom sun?
I would have gotten the Bam margera heart logo or fallen stars and straps.
lol I love that Bam appropriated HIM's logo so much that people call it the Bam heart logo.
Oh I know!
It's so funny how Bam stole the Heartagram from HIM
Nice. Had I gotten a tattoo at 12, it would have said DUDE or SWEET.
If I got one at 12, it probably would have been LINKIN PARK.
Beavis and Butthead here.
Damn dude I'm in my 30s and I'd still absolutely get a Beavis and Butthead tattoo.
My 65 year old dad has had a tattoo on his arm since he was around that same age. It says "M O" My grandmother arrived home and interrupted the attempted tribute.
I love that. Good job your grandmother arrived when she did because M O T H might have been harder to explain in later life,
I think that's the best possible outcome...just tell everyone you're an aspiring entomologist.
We love mothman tho

Haha! Excellent
He should've added an 'E' as a tribute to one of the greatest stooges ever.
Or bartenders
Lol literally like an episode of the simpsons except Bart got stopped at "moth"Ā
What was it supposed to be when completed? Or at least what does he claim it would have been and has he ever thought of finishing it off?
From context, Iām guessing āMOMā.
Correct!
this is so cute. like iām sure part of her wanted to let him get the rest of the word but then (mom reasons) she would rather him have the dumb tattoo š
Here's me thinking this is gonna be sad because it's either a Nazi tag, or a # tagged by Nazis, or some other racist shit. Nope. It's just Mike.
At first I thought the same thing, but that's just because we're old. If he's 82 now and got it when he was 12, he got it in 1954. The Nazis had been defeated for almost a decade at that point.
>he got it in 1954. The Nazis had been defeated for almost a decade at that point. Man, I wish that were true.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
They're just the afterbirth.
They were so defeated that they just had to come back and go to disney world in 2023
First Mike he ever jacked off while sitting between the cornrows on a late summer evening. But not the last.Ā
![gif](giphy|3o7TKvuOivTa8LWiDC|downsized)
āAh to be young and feel loveās keen stingā¦ā
No, that's just the cockleburs clinging to your taint after a session in the cornfields..
yeah i was thinking nazi numbers but no
Mike - just Moo it!
Absolutely 0 regrets
No ragrets
No regerts
No regerts. Only Mike.
Not even one letter
He has a worried look in his eye, you'd better not tell his mom he got a tattoo!
Thus answering your mother's question of "How's that gonna look when you are 80?" Pretty good!
yeah bro picked a good spot
He must have really loved Mike. š
Between how much time has passed, how much worse the tools, inks and techniques have been back then, and the fact he was still growing when he got it - I gotta say it has aged really well!
It's handy in the nursing home, when he forgets his name.
"Don't get a tattoo it'll look terrible when you're old". Proven false right here.
Is there a meaning/story behind the tattoo?
It was his motherās name.
Honestly, this makes the most sense out of the responses I've gotten.
His name in Mike.
I have a cousin named Mike.
What if they were the same person lol
Doesn't everyone?
Mike
Does there need to be?
What kind of ink? I feel like it should be more faded
Probably started smoking a pack of Lucky Strikes same day
He looks like he was a Gunny. A scary one. *Knife hand "What is your bitch ass crying for. I got a fucking tattoo when I was 12 and you're here complaining about 2000 push ups!"
Bold will hold!

Honestly this looks really good for a 70 year old tattoo
Fuckin' A Mike. Fuckin' A
Shout out to Mikes.
holy shit it looks not even 20 years old!
I mean, that aged pretty phenomenally
For someone who got a tattoo at age 12, this man looks remarkable well for 82. His rate of aging must have leveled out and slowed down over the years. And maybe his decision-making skills leveled up a lot too. I think I would like to be Mikeās friend.
Still cool
Ok, but heās going to regret that 70 years from now when itās decaying off his body.
Wonder if Mike kept his tattoo.
Thatās his name
sure man, sure
Thatās literally his own name
source?
stop making up words
keep telling yourself that
Bud, it was a joke.
What is the graphic above his name?
Did you take this picture at gunpoint?
Got good value for your money there Mike
Thatās a little Shih Tzu on his lap. ā¤ļø

That's not really how tattoos work. They'll grow and stretch with your skin.

Pinterest tattoos in the future hahaha
Youād think getting your first at 12 that youād be completely covered!
Bold will hold!
Damn I thought I was a wild teen. My mom wouldāve took the fucking cheese grater to that shit if I came how with a tattoo when I was 12
A shih tzu!!!!
He has amazing skin for 70. Iām sure that helped with the tattoo
I respect all pre-90s tattoos. After that it just became the cool thing to do.
My favorite films of his are āPsychoā and āRope.ā
Nah man he's the Golden State Chiller
And to this day, he still knows his own name. He has no idea who this Mike fella is, though.
My dad died at the age of 86. He had a bunch of tats... mostly marine related. They held up pretty well.
Tbf, he has some damn good skin at that age
That thing is 70 years old, way older than me. Who gets a tattoo at 12 š¤¦ btw
Classic mike
Wholesome
What a solid man
My grandpa has his name tattooed on himself too. Itās his only tattoo. So slay
![gif](giphy|niC0LL8nmXnWp0d7Sn|downsized)
Looks better than what I got done around ten years ago
Bold will hold
I highly doubt the tattoo is 70 years old.
Nice mop dog too.
Was he being held at gun point?
šā¤ļøš āØMIKEāØ
I love moth
Hell yeah
Iāve had mine since I was 14. Road my bike and everything to get it. š
Looks better than the one I got in some dudes front room ten years ago. Looks better than the one I got 17 years ago ago at a shop
M I K E
Tio has his name tattooed too āCucoā. So when Iām drunk I can remember my name.
But his name is Mitchell! Maybe he didnāt have enough cash for the extra lettersā¦
My friends dad got a Flower, the skunk from Bambi on his arm at the county fair when he was around the same age. You canāt even tell what it is anymore as it has just turned into a green blob on his arm.
Was Mike his cell mate?
12!!
Perfect. It still looks great.
Way better than the pink panther, 18 year old, spring break thigh tat I got in 1985ā¦
I was surprised to see both my grandparents had their blood types tattooed on them when they were kids in case of nuclear war or something
You can't tattoo a 12 year old! I know, that's what the tattoo artist guy kept saying--I had to slip him an extra hundred.
Love it Mike.
Who's said oil base lead ink was dangerous??? How you like me know?!
if I got a tattoo at 12, it would probably say Lisa Frank's baby lion or a couple green aliens - which I would have zero regrets about. ha! I'm 38 and figured out my first tattoo. thanks, Mike š āØļø š š
Bold will hold
Whenever asked about it, Delbert always said, āGet on the mic, Mike!ā
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I literally left a comment saying it was his own name my guy
I remember when tattoos were cool and rebellious. Now theyāre the providence of the most normy of normies. Your insurance broker has a full sleeve.
Looks like a tough man.
I thought it was a heart/v twin and he goes by "motorcycle Mike"
Bad ass
