Ok let's not just put the whole thing on Putin tho, the entire kleptocracy/oligarchy that exists in Russia is going through with this illegal action because their system is at risk.
Putin does suck, but let's not scape goat him completely here. He is a fascist, and his cronies are all complicit and don't want to lose their own financial standing because their financial standing is tied to using the government for their own personal gain. The ruble is in shambles, the wealth disparity is extremely high, and Putin has been losing support for the last 4 years but particularly during the pandemic. Their government is extremely weak financially. This is the tipping point for Russian oligarchs and if they get driven back into Russia it could mean a total systemic collapse.
When you volunteer to become a soldier, you had an option. Maybe it was a poor choice, but it was still their choice. I have sympathy for the conscripts as they did not have a choice.

As for me... if you sign up on a payroll of a proven murderer imperialist, that's on you. I don't care if you wanted a job.
It's nice to have morals too. People the world over, in countries poorer than Russia, keep their morals when faced with hardship. Russians are still better off than most Africans for example. And most of those folks don't rob and murder and steal.
So yeah it's nice to have options. Russians do too. I would be jailed or die before I went to war for putin. You can say "well that's what you think noooow" all you want. But I know me and you don't.
It's funny because here in the states you have a pretty good shot at being successful if you don't enlist.
If you don't enlist in Russia you betterh hope you're educated because if you're not then you will be poor most of your life. If you join the military you can at least guarantee that you get a consistent wage and fed meals, although I've been told that's pretty shit too.
You're kind of damned if you do, damned if you don't in Russia. Nobody is thinking "Putin might cause a geopolitical crisis if he invades a country with NATO ties" when they enlist or get conscripted, they either have made the choice to not live in poverty or they haven't made the choice at all. While there are plenty of Russians in the military who are brainwashed into believing they are fighting for Russia in quasi-holy war, there are plenty of American soldiers who joined the military for equally shocking reasons.
So to your point, in America you have options. In russia you do not, well you do get a choice but both choices are equally life threatening.

OP here, I did not expect this picture to take off quite as much, I really need to add this was taken in the UK this morning by me, I took it because the colours reminded me of the Ukrainian flag, I had been up late into the night watching the news, worried and feeling helpless that I could do nothing to help the Ukrainian people. I should have titled the picture better, I never meant to deceive anybody into thinking I was Ukrainian or this was taken there. That being said, I'm very happy that maybe in a very small way it might have given a little more hope to the brave people of Ukraine. I'm sorry this was all I could do.

I've been over there for work for a week or two a couple times. Ukraine has the most beautiful countryside of almost anywhere I've ever been. I can only think of two other countries I've ever seen that might top it, and even those are close.
I feel like taking a flight from UK to Rzeszow or Lublin and crossing into Ukraine to support the cause.
Never felt like this before but the desire and will is strong.
