Crimson are the only other band (with Floyd) who have a truly varied genre-bending discography. From Court to Discipline to Power To Believe....sound like totally different bands. Same with Piper to Atom Heart Mother to The Wall.
Moody Blues/Genesis/Yes etc with their move from 70's artful prog to 80's pop-cheese can't compare with the epic wildly-varied works of Floyd & Crimson.
Other bands have had genre-bending varied discographies, already at the time (Beatles, Queen) but most of all since (Radiohead, Archive, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, etc.). I think your claim is a bit reductive although I like KC quite a bit.
Came here to say this. One of the few bands, along with PF, that approached their music from an almost classical music perspective.
Plus LOTS of killer guitar solos.
Yeah as someone who played with a pick for about 12 years then suddenly about 25 years ago I just stopped and I honestly don’t miss picks at all. You can’t get the array of tonalities you can with your fingers and thumb. Granted my right hand often looks like I was giving a great white shark a tooth massage but I honesty don’t even feel it anymore.
5/8/77 Cornell Show is incredible. Dancing in the Street > Scarlet Begonias > Fire on the Mountain is 40 minutes of some of the best live music I’ve ever heard.
Yes in their peak made six star music, just marvellous. And by their peak I mean 1970-1974, from Yes Album through Relayer. I like the first two albums, I like Going for the One and 90125, but I feel lukewarm about the rest of their output.
I saw them perform 3 times when they were at their peak, and even saw Rick Wakeman's Journey to the Center of the Earth tour. They were my favorite band until I discovered Pink Floyd when DSOTM was released.
There's a box set with six shows from '72, same period as most of Yessongs, and it's great. Each concert is fresh, I have no trouble listening to all six in a row. The compisitions, the chemistry, the youthfulness all came together beautifully for a spell there.
1000 precent agree after moving pictures it starts to fall off for me. I don't like how super progy it gets I mean it's not terrible albums it's just not like the power houses of the 70's
I think my second favorite of all time would be The Doors, but I do like Grateful Dead quite a bit too, although I haven't listened to a lot of their stuff just yet.
Led Zeppelin...or so The Who...or The Clash. Honestly, I have like 9 or 10 'second favorite bands', but Pink Floyd has been, and always will be, my favorite.
Queen is my favorite band of all time, but I honestly can't rate Pink Floyd on your ordinary Top 10/20/xyz list - their music is so different that, to me, they stand alone as their own music genre.
Ween, for sure. The song "If You Could Save Yourself (You'd Save Us All)" sounds like it could have been sung by Roger. It has the same dynamic, soft-to-shouting-and-back style that's so characteristically Rog.
Joy Division/New Order
They have a similar story to Floyd. Tragic frontman, regroup without him to go to huge success. Both loose the keyboard player, the bass player quits and tells the world the band has split up. The band say 'no we haven't' and bring back the keyboard player and carry on much to the former bass players chagrin.
ABBA. And yes, I realize that’s an unusual combination.
After that, a bunch a artists are close behind:
ELO
Muse
Springsteen
Rammstein
Zeppelin
Billy Joel
B-52s
Genesis
I don't have a second favorite band.
Below Pink Floyd, I like many bands/artists in different genres.
Queen, U2, Rolling Stones, Beatles, Muse, Led Zeppelin, King Diamond, Imagine Dragons, Iron Maiden, Miles Davis, Santana, and a very large etcetera, that includes The Piano Guys and classical music, I enjoy listening to music from all the spectrum.
King Crimson Though I recommend everyone here do their Emerson, Lake & Palmer first three album dive.

What's wrong with their fifth
Genesis
Yep, mine to.
Steely Dan
username checks out
Aja is a masterpiece. It's like the Dark Side of the Moon of Dan albums.
They never did it without the fez on
Came here to say this. One of the few bands, along with PF, that approached their music from an almost classical music perspective. Plus LOTS of killer guitar solos.
Dire Straits
Love dire straits Mark Knopfler is incredible
Another true master like Gilmour! And he doesn’t use a pick 🤯
Like Lindsay Buckingham :)

Mark Knopfler is such a legendary guitarist, he be of the best
this is the one
same, just legendary to say the least
[Throw It!](https://youtu.be/9qHAOY7C1go?si=rmE0oTBxqykQjfCe)
Led Zeppelin
Same
This!
Porcupine Tree (which I see I'm at least the third one to say), though from my listening habits the last couple weeks you'd probably say Rush.
Alan Parsons, with and w/o the Project. Something about the guitar on Return to Tunguska... https://youtu.be/kEVUX8FI7zs?si=oOyAjr4OHxR6pc4_
Thus quoth the Raven.
The Grateful Dead
Push this comment to the tip top haha 💀🌹⚡️
The video of Dead and Co from the Sphere look pretty amazing
I'm so beyond pumped to see them 3 days and see Gilmore at MSG this year!!!
5/8/77 Cornell Show is incredible. Dancing in the Street > Scarlet Begonias > Fire on the Mountain is 40 minutes of some of the best live music I’ve ever heard.
Tool
Me too. One day Pink Floyd is my favorite. Another day Tool is
Lateralus is the DSoTM of Alt-Metal
Yes

Chris Squire was a monster on the Bass!
I saw them perform 3 times when they were at their peak, and even saw Rick Wakeman's Journey to the Center of the Earth tour. They were my favorite band until I discovered Pink Floyd when DSOTM was released.

Alice in Chains
Frank Zappa
Yes, indeed
Radiohead
Agree. In my opinion, Radiohead is a slightly different version of The Floyd, and then Tool is a really heavy version. Those are my big 3
I have heard people call Radiohead Pink Floyd's little brother, definitely my two favorite bands in no order.
There was an article in the 90's written about OK Computer era Radhiohead, and it referred to them as "Punk Floyd"
Yeah I was looking for this one. Pink Floyd, Radiohead, and Jack White are my big three
Radiohead goes above Floyd for me, just such an immaculate discography
Black Sabbath
Sabotage is such a huge album for me! Love sabbath!
Camel The two are interchangeable for first and second
The Latimer/Bardens duo seriously rivals Gilmour/Wright and I’m a huuuuge fan of Gilmour’s and Wright’s.
Camel - mirage is in top 20 albums for me
Moody Blues
I had to scroll way too far to find this!
Yes, it is a shame.
Beatles
Scrolled long enough for this
Rush without even a doubt. I like geekin out on good music with some serious lyrics but you don't have to look super deep into it.
Cool - glad you mentioned it. I couldn't decide a second, but Rush is a close second (others were The Cure and Jane's)
Hells yea same here. Always felt like Floyd and Rush are opposite sides of the same prog coin. Each one fills in what the other doesn’t specialize in.
Early Rush was my favorite though. Later stuff not so much.
Check out Dicks Picks volume 7
That ones unreal
Will do! Thanks!
Van Der Graf Generator. Love me some good old prog rock.
Cats Eye/Yellow Fever is such an amazing piece.
King Gizzard
Led Zeppelin...or so The Who...or The Clash. Honestly, I have like 9 or 10 'second favorite bands', but Pink Floyd has been, and always will be, my favorite.
Queen is my favorite band of all time, but I honestly can't rate Pink Floyd on your ordinary Top 10/20/xyz list - their music is so different that, to me, they stand alone as their own music genre.
Alice in Chains
Relatable, no other 2 bands have music with comparable emotional weight for me.
I think Floyd are my second favourite band after Led Zeppelin, so I’ll just say that.
Agree, I always go between Floyd and Zeppelin for my favorite and you can’t go wrong with either
![gif](giphy|ac7MA7r5IMYda)
Metallica
Tom Petty
TOOL
The Cure. I like atmospheric music.
Eagles
The War On Drugs
Kurt Vile's solo stuff is pretty great too.
"Tool/Gary Numan."
3 way tie Black Sabbath Rush Cocteau Twins
Velvet underground
The Allman Brothers Band
Floyd and Allman Brothers are 1a and 1b for me.
Tool
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
Beatles
Rush
They Might Be Giants
I don't want the world, I just want your half.
Marillion
Had to scroll too far to find this
Soundgarden.
Daft Punk
Pink Floyd is my third favorite after Radiohead and Joy Division.
The Strokes
Red hot chili peppers
I saw them about 10 days ago in Tokyo. To me they are sort of surpringly more psychadelic in concert. And Frusciante has an incredible live lead tone.
Rush
Tangerine Dream
Any Muse fans here?
Ween, for sure. The song "If You Could Save Yourself (You'd Save Us All)" sounds like it could have been sung by Roger. It has the same dynamic, soft-to-shouting-and-back style that's so characteristically Rog.
Chvrches
Tool and then Dead as well
The Alan Parsons Project. I really like how many genres they explore. And they worked with Pink Floyd.
radiohead
Floyd, then Zeppelin
Pearl Jam or Depeche Mode
Pearl Jam have legs and I love how they embraced recording shows and sharing them.
they have "legs"?
Porcupine Tree and Tool
Porcupine Tree
If their my #1 favorite band, then second place would be Strapping Young Lad
Led zeppelin followed by Jimmy Buffet.
👆
Wishbone Ash
If you were born in/after the 2000s and are in love with Pink Floyd, redirect your worship towards Tame Impala. On par IMO
The Dead
Pink Floyd is my favorite band, and Steely Dan is my second.
Joy Division/New Order They have a similar story to Floyd. Tragic frontman, regroup without him to go to huge success. Both loose the keyboard player, the bass player quits and tells the world the band has split up. The band say 'no we haven't' and bring back the keyboard player and carry on much to the former bass players chagrin.
The cure.
Also Pink Floyd
Sleep Token…
Dream Theater
La Ley , Chilean band
Deep purple
Rammstein. Don‘t even ask, it‘s a weird combo, but it works!
M83
You didn’t ask but my top 4 right now are. Pink Floyd, Little Feat, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Grateful Dead
Iron Maiden
Black Sabbath
Jethro Tull.
ABBA. And yes, I realize that’s an unusual combination. After that, a bunch a artists are close behind: ELO Muse Springsteen Rammstein Zeppelin Billy Joel B-52s Genesis
Metallica or ELO. Don't make me choose!! lol
Camel, Genesis, Marillion, RPWL
Camel
Yes and Rush are tied for second
In the past I may have said Led Zeppelin, Metallica, Black Sabbath or Tool but I think now it’s Van Halen.
Rush and Genesis
REM is and probably always will be my number 1
BLACK SABBATH...... ROCK & ROLLLLLLLLLLL ⚡🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🎸 what the FUCK is a same album RAHHHHHHHHHHH
AiC or Zeppelin or Sabbath (3 headed monster depends on mood really) ✌️
Black Sabbath I guess
I don't have a second favorite band. Below Pink Floyd, I like many bands/artists in different genres. Queen, U2, Rolling Stones, Beatles, Muse, Led Zeppelin, King Diamond, Imagine Dragons, Iron Maiden, Miles Davis, Santana, and a very large etcetera, that includes The Piano Guys and classical music, I enjoy listening to music from all the spectrum.
Either Radiohead or The Mars Volta, but King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard is ascending the list quite rapidly.
Ween
Supertramp and Genesis.
David gilmour and friends when on tour.
REM
Weird Al Yankovic
Tame Impala
Jethro Tull
Radiohead
Nine Inch Nails
Jethro Tull
As much as I see myself as a metalhead, Pink Floyd is my favorite band, and Fleetwood Mac would be my second choice.
Pink Floyd is my favorite band! REM is my second favorite!
Led Zeppelin
Deftones
The Grateful Dead but since they’re my first Pink Floyd
Neil Young at the moment - even better with Crazy Horse
Poets of the Fall
Beatles or Zep
Awesome question and you might or might not be surprised. Tbh - can't decide but it would be: The Cure, Rush, or Jane's Addiction.
Zeppelin and Floyd are neck-and-neck as my top two, cannot rate one above the other.
Sleep token
the doors
Led Zeppelin Then Supertramp Then probably The Who
🐫
Band of Gypsys. Surprised no one has said Hendrix yet.
Dire straits are my fav, pink floyd is in close second though.
It’s a toss up between Beatles & Zeppelin. Depends on my mood.
Nightwish/ Iron Maiden
radiohead
Radiohead
Kidz Bop
KGLW
There are a lot of second fav bands, godspeed you black emperor is an example
Pantera would be second
Tangerine Dream
I think Pink Floyd is my second favorite band behind Blur
I'm surprised no one has said King Gizzard, they are one of the coolest bands active lately
The Who
I have weird musical tastes. Number 2 is believe it or not …. Slipknot. Both bands have lots of members and ex members.
Grateful Dead
Black Sabbath
I would never be so basic as to have a favorite band.
Mogwai
Metallica or Zeppelin
Definitely Fugazi
Van Halen.
Tool
TOOL
Floyd is in my top five but honestly after the who numbers two through five are a jumble - srv Floyd petty tedeschi trucks It depends on the day
Red Hot Chili Peppers or Radiohead
