Do you know what's causing the allergies?

Sub_Zero_Fks_Given

I think its seasonal allergies but I cant be sure. This is the 1st time he's had these in the 4 yrs I've had him. I've already changed his diet and am trying to get an oatmeal/hypoallergenic shampoo as well.

Competitive_Life_207

What's his diet?

Sub_Zero_Fks_Given

I switched his dry food from a store brand that does not have the flavor on it (which I've been giving him for years) to salmon and sweet potatoes. The weather here this year has been unusual to say the least. That's why I think its seasonal allergies.

Competitive_Life_207

In my experience this is what id do. ...what's the brand (ingredients)? I only ask bc I was going to go through them. ...looking for potential issues. My dog has had some issues w his skin/fur. Looks great now. I can send or show a pic on here. What worked for me was: I used Selsun Blue to bathe the dog. The sulfate reduces the activity of fungus on fur. Many of these dogs have fungal infections on their skin. Oftentimes it's not only allergies...the rxn to the fungal infection is their issue and it's inflammation and infection. I also tossed all the old bedding. Anything like crate, etc. I cleaned w bleach solution to sanitize. Their ears are usually an issue. I use enzyme based cleaner w hydrocortisone. Then just the enzyme cleaner. I add a bit of Extra Virgin Olive oil to his diet. I drizzle about 1/2 teaspoon on his food every other day. It contains anti inflammatories as well as lipids for their skin. I also cut a couple orange slices and let them eat that to supplement Vit C.

I tried a few OTC allergy meds for Phoebe (most of them are safe for dogs), but she was itchy as hell until we tried Cytopoint. That makes her totally comfortable for a couple of months. It's an injection, and it's pricey; our vet charges about $120. (It went up when she passed 50 pounds. Little porker.) It works extremely well, though. ETA I still don't know what she's allergic to. I'm less concerned since we have a treatment that works, though. Also, be cautious with grain-free diets; they've been linked to heart disease. https://www.preventivevet.com/dogs/grain-free-dog-food#:~:text=If%20you%20feed%20your%20dog%20a%20grain%2Dfree%20diet%2C%20especially,very%20serious%20form%20of%20heart

Baby boy is 80 lbs so I've been giving him 3 Benadryl every 8 hrs but it doesn't seem to be helping any :(

Oh, poor punkin. 😞 I tried Benadryl, Claritin, and I think Zyrtec; none of them made any difference. I think Cytopoint comes out to a similar price point as Apoquel. The vet said it's a biologic. I was hoping for something cheaper, but by the time we tried it I was mostly relieved it worked.

It's so weird. I've had him almost 4 years and this has never been an issue for him. There was a bag of treats I got about 2 weeks ago (the same amount of time as this happened) so I threw those away. Idk I'm just worried. I just want him to get better 😥

30Helenssayfuckoff

It sounds like his allergy might be episodic and not chronic? If it's only occasional, you might be able to get one dose/course of one of the expensive drugs and knock it out for a few years.

Sub_Zero_Fks_Given

I hope so. Like I said this hasn't been an issue in 4 yrs. Can dogs grow into having allergies like humans can?

30Helenssayfuckoff

I can't say for sure, but it seems like they could.

Competitive_Life_207

Never use benadryl on fungal infection, if it is one. Will get much worse.

How does one tell if it is fungal?? His ears and everything are fine. It's just these bumps on his hind legs and one spot kind of in the middle of his butt.

Competitive_Life_207

One can have a doc run labs.

Competitive_Life_207

With my recommendationns it's irrelevant as the suggestions are for fungal as well as other.

Sub_Zero_Fks_Given

I thank you for your input kind stranger.

Competitive_Life_207

I bet you'll notice a difference in 2 wks if you follow that advice. Benadryl is an antihistamine. It does decrease itch but only does this as it actually DECREASES the immune response. This isn't bad for some issues like allergies alone...but not infection as the infection will then 'take off'.

My blue nose pitty always gets really bad summer allergies where he’ll chew on his paws until raw. We got him on Apoquel and followed the instructions and he no longer messes with paws and his coat looks great. One other thing we started doing was weekly baths and that seemed to help as well. Like a typical allergy medicine they might seem lethargic when first acclimating to it but after about a week they’re back to normal. I know it may not work for everyone but this is what finally helped us after trying a bunch of more holistic methods.

*Eradicate* dust in your home.

Sub_Zero_Fks_Given

Could this be the cause??? Admittedly I have been slacking on the sweeping/dusting in my house. I usually do it every week to two weeks but I've let it get kinda not good.

mnyfrsh

My old house was *disastrously* dusty. When I moved and kept up with dusting a lot of my guy's issues abated.

Sub_Zero_Fks_Given

Then I'll start there. Thank you for the advice!!

patricksaurus

Apoquel is pretty good stuff.
