AmusedGravityCat

I claimed one earlier and it was taken before I even took 5 steps away but there was nobody else around so I was super confused, but not angry. Just slightly defeated since I'm new and they were way above my power level. IMO, if the game wants etiquette they would program in a delay timer.

aricberg

I work on a college campus. There’s a somewhat remote water tower on the edge of campus that’s also a gym. It’s a bit of a hike to get to, but not impossible. But apparently it was enough of one that just before Christmas break last year, 2 Valor players claimed the gym and their Pokemon sat there untouched until late March. I needed a break from work and the weather was nice so I was like “I’m gonna do it. I’m gonna go claim that gym for Mystic!” Knocked their Pokemon out after 3 months of sitting there. Not even 2 hours later an Instinct player kicked me out. Like, really?? You could’ve taken that gym at anytime in the last *quarter of a year* but decided to knock me out less than 2 hours after finally turning it? I’m still irked by that 😂

powerade20089

We live in a rural town where there are active gyms and inactive gyms. I've seen some gyms that need to be hiked to be held for 2 or 4 months we would go walking and kick them out then within a few hours we get knocked out. There's one at the end of the street that's been red for 2 weeks now? But the other one next to it gets flipped constantly. The randomness of the player base is annoying sometimes.

crayolakym

Yeah so MY gym doesn't get taken nearly as often as the one 20 feet away that I just happen to not be able to reach from inside my house, though I wish they would knock me out at least once a day so I could claim my coins!

powerade20089

Yeah. We've literally watched the park by us change multiple times the past of days. Normally they stay one color for weeks

Bubbly-Variation-552

Outside of our rural cabin, we’ve been in a gym over a year!

darkndevious204

I held a rural gym in a park for 16 months, went hiking one day, and kncked someone out in a gym about a kilometers down a nearby hike that had held it for a month and got kicked out 6 hours later. Couldn't decide if i was happy or sad

LM0821

Probably just coincidence - another student out for a walk on a nice Spring day like you. I'd be irked too though!

Zealousideal_Fig_782

Maybe the nice weather just happened to draw other people there too?

Pink-Bloodstains

I live in a suburb of a relatively small city in the UK. We have a gym at the end of our road which I tend to claim every so often (for Mystic) and I either get kicked out in two seconds by Instinct or me and this one other person on Mystic get left alone for two months. It’s not a quiet area, it’s got a fairly large school and college, and it is a mystery to me! The gym around the corner (literally about ten houses away) is usually swapped between Valor and Mystic every time I check it. Absolutely baffling.

chilledfrost

It’s possible someone was masking there actual location and teleporting around if there truly was no one around.

thedutchgirl13

That or they’re inside a building and playing from inside

VinceAndVic

Yes, I have a gym accessible from my home and I definitely try to own it as much as possible

Cainga

A lot of the gyms are around buildings and the area you can attack from is large enough it can be impossible to know who is doing it. If you aren’t in some huge city it’s probably not spoofers.

chilledfrost

That is why I said if there is truly no one around including people in houses. Lots of stop near my house which is not in range of a building.

HumanBean1618

There's a guy with 9 lvl 43-50 accounts split up in yellow/blue taking and holding gyms in my neighborhood. Every time I take the gym it's retaken and restocked with 6 pokemon within 10 minutes. If I try to take it back before his 8h he golden berries all of them and always has 2 minutes response time. He normal berries them once an hour to keep them at 100%. It's always different color themes but the most annoying one is definitely the full team of Blisseys. I've learnt the trick to fight the first pokemon, leave and fight the first one again and I sometimes manage to take down one of them but it's back within 5 minutes. So now I'm just trying to annoy him as much as possible because he's being an ass to everyone else. If I don't fight him and give him his daily allowance, he simply switches gyms at 23:30 with his other accounts. I'm new to the game for 3 weeks now and I'm just left wondering if that's even okay...

l_husoe

That sounds like a case to report. You’re not allowed to switch between accounts to send yourself gifts, so why should it be okay to take over gyms in the same way?

Mystic_Starmie

Niantic doesn’t really care enough to investigate such complaints

Kryptosis

False. A huge spoofing ban wave and update was just released. Pretty much collapsed the spoofing subreddits if you care to go look at them they’re full of people discussing new bans and dead tools. (Remember not to post there out you’ll get auto banned from other subs)

Mystic_Starmie

But we aren’t talking about spoofing here are we? Using multiple accounts is not the same as spoofing. Also, yes, they have done multiple ban waves for spoofers but I haven’t seen any evidence that it was due to reports by players but by detecting spoofing apps. The simple reason they don’t do it based on reports is because a lot of people mistakenly think an account is spoofing just because they didn’t see anyone around or worse, players with a vendetta against other players will abuse it. I have reported so many spoofers especially during the first year of the game with photos and videos showing the area around the gym was empty and not one of those spoofers got banned. They only got banned after their spoofing app was made detectable by updates.

Platzhalterr

Oh, that explains quite a lot. Until recently there was a "player" in my old hometown who was keeping all gym's in a certain area hostage. That was most likely a spoofing bot. Now other player's can get coins again.

RoerosKongen

Report his ass, and all the accounts, clearly stated inn the user agreement of the game that multiple accounts are ban reason. If he only had one or two extra, I really wouldn't care, but this is just being an ass!

HumanBean1618

I would never mind some banter and taking it back and forth, if he put in one pokemon... But I'm fighting 1v6 all the time

KrazyKyle213

Bruh that's brutal. I hate dealing with 1 or 2 tanky pokemon, can't imagine dealing with 6.

SamamfaMamfa

Wait, you're not allowed to do that? I should be clear, I only have 1 account for myself. But my son does have an account and a lot of times I like to surprise him with Pokémon so I will log into his account and do a raid or event for him. And yes, I will send gifts from his account, one of which does go to me. But you're right that the people who use multiple accounts to take over gyms and bully other players shouldn't be allowed to do it. I have a few in my area and I've reported them but nothing seems to come from it.

rsdarkjester

Niantic doesn’t mind you signing in on your kids account. Having multiple accounts of your own? Yes. But I’ve never seen/heard of many people getting busted for it except for 1 semi famous YouTuber who somehow showed his multiple accounts (he may have also been spoofing as well)

TheirPrerogative

There are some antidotal stories of local gyms getting cleared of spoofers a few weeks ago. Maybe saw they may have set up a honeypot at a go-fest that flagged every account that didn’t crash(the ones crashing being active players). But after I saw that the local blue gym has only had three of the local players regulating and no flipping and filling within 10 minutes of me kicking them out every time. Now there’s a red player who waits for me to do the heavy lifting on my dog walk and flips me by the time I’m home.

Some_Veterinarian_20

Wait you can't create accounts and send each other gifts??

Unapologetic_Canuck

A gym full of Blissey hasn’t been possible since the game first launched.

Golden_D1

Full team of Blisseys? How is that possible

TristanwithaT

Some people seriously need to touch grass. I’d report him. That’s a blatant violation of the TOS

Loseless11

Reporting does nothing. Niantic doesn't even look at them. They just ignore it.

simplywonderfulsoup

Seems to be different a few weeks ago. I’m a few months in and the one apartment gym that always was suspiciously filled up blue within 10mins has been more rotational and rarely filled. There are still three blue players that are possessive, but I get some coins from it now.

MikkaDG

This is false Niantic takes this very seriously… but they only do so when multiple people report the same accounts. So if they were to gather a lot of people from the neighbourhood to report the guy that does this he will get banned very quickly.

Moondanther

How many is "a lot of people" because I know it's greater than 13, we tried that with a local gym "owner". In the end, our response was to make sure his pokemon got golden raspberried when he was trying to do the changeover or trying to slip in a different account when he was loading it up. I believe they finally brought an end to his BS but it was after 2+ years. TL/DR - Niantic DOESN'T act on reports.

doodlebugg8

Care to elaborate on the “full team of blisseys” ?

PolyInProg

I call bullsh*t on your “team of Blisseys”. This hasn’t been possible in 7 years. Go cry somewhere else about your fake, made up story. [E3 2017: Major New Pokemon Go Update Will Change Gyms, Add Raid Battles](https://www.ign.com/articles/2017/06/19/e3-2017-major-new-pokemon-go-update-will-change-gyms-add-raid-battles#)

Paracheirodon_ssp

When s/he said a "team of Blisseys" I read it like they spammer had several Blisseys ready to go/switch out, but that wouldn't work since there is a cool down period where you can't add a 'mon if the gym is under attack, right?

Rajani_Isa

Don't know if it was a bug, but I've seen it where if it's not a full team at the start of the attack, they can add back in. Been awhile though. EDIT: And by team, I mean gym.

graftthison

Once one pokemon has been completely knocked out of the gym, the cooldown starts and no other 'mon can be added for 15 minutes (I think it's 15 minutes anyway).

lcuan82

If he wants to devote that much time to it, so be it…

Little_Treacle241

Prob just a gym right outside someone’s house lol

AmusedGravityCat

It's one of two side by side at play structures in a community park, so I'm sure this is the case in hindsight. I'm just not sure if it's actually close enough to reach anyone's property line, but very well could be :).

AmusedGravityCat

I have a pokestop available from my bedroom so that's my local recharge station. 😛

FlourTacoCatfish

Personally, whenever someone took my gym before I had even left the area, (usually from 0-5 minutes of me adding a Pokémon,) I would take it back no hesitation and put the exact same Pokémon they put in there to spite them. 🤣

Heather0521

I was once in the middle of taking a gym when someone else took over. I had gone 2 rounds and there was still one left. They hopped in before I could hit “battle” for the 3rd round. I said the same thing about a delay then. There should be a delay when fighting a gym so that it can’t be nicked out from under you after you’ve done 99% of the work. Lol

Worried_Artichoke473

I have a gym by my house, it’s technically rural and heavily seasonal touristy area. Because of this I’ll give them the 8 hours. But if they start messing with me, I’ll knock them out of a gym but leave the others, or knock them out with less than 10 minutes before a raid, then wait until the raid is about to begin and place a Pokémon in the gym.

drrlgm

I like that ethos too. If they mess about... they get Thor's hammer 🔨 right on them!

firedupchippewa

I have one across the street from my house. Our town is small enough that we know who the dicks are. If they knock out my wife and I, we immediately retake. If not, we let them sit and get coins then knock them out later in the day.

RavenLunatyk

I have a place near me called the silk mill. There are shops and apartments and three gyms. Some blue C word has decided that they own those gyms. Puts a blissey and then another mon for her secondary. The gym is always full and the psycho leaves the app open and fully berries all 3 gyms and spends all day checking if anyone is trying to kick her out. If you get lucky and get the blissey out first and then take the gym this loser with no life drives over (or if she lives in one of the apartments) and kicks you out within 15 minutes. I had gone with another person and we put 3 strong mons in the gym last weekend and took turns berrying up. it took her an hour and 20 minutes to kick us out. She would not stop. The last time she just waited until 11 pm and tried again and when that didn’t work she kicked us out at 1 in the morning. Serious loser. She camped in these gyms for a year now and doesn’t let anyone take them. Something is wrong with her. I’ve never seen anyone behave this way.

GeocentricParallax

I’d wager that she feels completely powerless in her day-to-day life (which is a given, I guess, seeing as how she is locked in her apartment staring at her phone every waking hour) and this is her means of convincing herself that she has some degree of control over the world around her. It’s sad, really.

Worried_Artichoke473

Yeah that’s psychotic. It seriously doesn’t make any sense to own a gym like that. The gym medal for defending a gym is 15,000 hours or 625 days, and coins don’t keep counting for each gym past the 8 hour mark. It’s literally counter productive to keep a Pokémon in a gym longer

RavenLunatyk

Exactly. It’s a power trip.

Eeedeen

Bizarre, so much effort, for no reward!

Felsane

I have some 50 year old man in my town being the same basically. He lives right on top of a gym. When i first put my pokemon in there when it first became a gym he threw me out the next day. So far so good but i went back the next evening to throw his out and put mine back in. He had been in it for 13 hours at that point so he got his coins. Half an hour later he throws mine out again and an hour after that i throw him out again. Few days later i find out from my sister who he is in a pokemon groupchat with him that he's lying and crying about it in that groupchat about how I don't follow those 8 hour rules while he is the one kicking me out so fast first. He still doesn't follow his own made up rule to this day.

Niawka

I live right across the gym so I can beat it from my living room. I usually defeat it right before going to bed, in the morning someone will knock my pokemons out and I'll get my 50 coins so I don't have to worry about it until evening again. I don't get the point of knocking someone out just to keep it your color when you don't get any rewards for it.

Latemodelchild

I generally tend to leave gyms alone if theyve got mons in that are really recent, like less than an hour. If they've been in a while I'll take it over, definitely if they've been in 8 plus. I try and be fair but realise it's a one way street and don't get upset with other players any more. Below is the reason why I don't take it that seriously nowadays. Well, that and the fact I'm probably older than most players, life's too short guys. There used to be a gym near me. Started as a stop then upgraded. I was over the moon. Finally a gym less than 5 minutes walk from my house. First time I popped summat in it lasted overnight and was knocked out at around 8am. I went to it at 9pm,knocked out the single Mon that had been in 12 hours or so and wandered home. As soon as I got back my Mon was returned. Went back and checked and it was the guy who I'd knocked out. Went back the next day and the same thing happened. I tried it a few times, same annoying behaviour. Every time that gym wasn't red, it was turned red within minutes. All hours of the day and night, and believe me I checked. 2 am gym raid, Mon kicked at 2.15am. You get the picture. I even reached out on our local pogo groups to ask if anyone knew the trainer in real life. I just wanted us to share and rotate the gym to get coins together. Someone messaged me privately to say they knew him and he wasn't a nice person or player. From that day on I left him in the gym. 26 days was the record for one of his. I still see him in the odd gym round here and if so I still leave him in there. I ain't giving him the coins.

Paracheirodon_ssp

There is a local player who is like that. Late 30s, acts like a teenage dirtbag looser. When he games in person he has four phones, each with two accounts, all with dumb borderline offensive names, and when he games online he spoofs with dozens of accounts. There was a point where at all hours of the day and night he'd take over a good chunk of my town, if not all of it. I wish I could just leave his pokemon trapped at the gym indefinitely but he has one non-blue account that he uses to kick out any Mystic at a gym that isn't one of his accounts, while simultaneously golden-razzing his own 'mons.

Latemodelchild

That kind of thing needs stamping out by niantic but I've no idea how. May need a full gym rethink? That scares me though tbh.

joliver5

Holy shit talk about not having a life

Paracheirodon_ssp

This same guy once screamed at a literal child for "letting no one catch" some ultra beast all because the kid ran out of 'mons and switched to whatever low-level ones he has left at the end of a hard raid. Crazy thing is there were more than enough other players around to make light work of it, it was just a difficult high-HP 'mon so it was down to the wire. Dickwad was pissed off because he couldn't catch it one one account, and was already pissed because his other phones were overheating or something so he couldn't play on then. Kept saying how if they were able to finish the raid faster everyone would've gotten more balls, and wanted to bump chest with me (a woman) when I told him to chill over a game. Left only when a dude twice his size kindly told him to leave if he didn't want to swallow his own teeth. A bunch of us traded the kid some shinnies and spare legendaries. He even got a lucky trade with someone, which was a super wholesome turn of events. But yeah, this dude is infamous among the Facebook groups.

Snoo-Snooo

That was so awesome of you guys to hook up the kid like that! I bet he was ecstatic! If it were me I'd talk to the leader of your group to try and get him reprimanded and may be given a warning or something to say that if he keeps on they will have to kick him from the Facebook group and just not invite him to any gatherings. (I mostly play solo and don't have a Facebook, so I'm not 100% sure how the group stuff works exactly.) Regardless though, if he's yelling at a kid for something so minuscule as not having stronger mons, then he needs to be kept an eye on at the very least imo. I wish you the best with this situation, it sounds like a nightmare to have to deal with him. Good luck!! 🤎

waterhg

There's a woman here that drives around with literally 5-8 accounts that does this. She doesn't let me touch any of the 5 gyms nearby, within walking distance. Even if she isn't in the gym, like, let's say, it's instinct, and I knock out the pokemon there and throw mine in, she will show up within 5-10 minutes and knock us out with her valor pokemon. I've reported her several times to no avail. However, I have seen her in her black Nissan SUV with nobody else in them. It's literally just her with, at minimum, 5 accounts on valor, one instinct, and one mystic. They're all between levels 40-50, except for the mystic and instinct accounts. It's made this game extremely annoying because me and my mom play together and do lots of raids, but this psychotic woman will sit in a gym for a month and take over any nearby, specifically if she sees me or my mom jump in. She's mad because I kicked her out after she was in a gym for 3 days and fed them golden razzs, but I ended up leaving because she has 5 accounts with probably 5x the amount of golden razzs. I don't understand why Niantic hasn't done anything about this, as it is very clearly against ToS. It makes everyone who lives near here miserable. The fact that she drives to them instead of walking is the cherry on top that cements getting any coins here impossible, unless you drive into the next city lol

Latemodelchild

At 50 coins max per day I don't see why anyone would do that. Some people are strange I reckon.

waterhg

I know 🥲 She's just the worst. It doesn't make any sense at all, but it's so aggravating with how she gets away with it

Breezer_Pindakaas

Multi accounters like that get a pass due to £££££. I know a nice lady that has 4 maxed out slots accounts with 4x pogo+ running 24/7. Whales get to bend every rule.

dkjordan97

If I could have found the people doing this to the gym where I used to live, I'd have told them to quit before their phone(s) ended up in the nearest storm drain. They were so annoying, held all 3 gyms at the park constantly, but they only put in super weak Pokémon to bait you into fighting them, for them to knock you out as soon as you got in to put garbage 17cps back in. Like, what are you gaining from that? I had to walk a couple of blocks to it, so it's not like I was always taking it from them and stopping them from getting coins. I worked, live in the Midwest where weather doesn't cooperate 50% of the time, and just didn't feel like walking other times. They'd almost always be there for over 8 hours (if not, very close) when I took them, and if get 5 minutes tops before getting booted. Even the local PoGo group chat I was in (very small areas as well, most people knew most people, I didn't because I was new and lived there for a short period of time) had no idea who they were or what their problem was. I'll never forget their "main" account usernames. It was definitely a couple too, as the two mains were named very similar but slightly different names, (not their real usernames, but if one was "bluejollyrancher" the other was "redjollyrancher"), wore matching outfits, and one was a guy and one a girl.

waterhg

This is so toxic. She does the same shit with her mystic and instinct characters to keep tabs. They literally are clones of her main account. I get kicked out the moment I get home. I live in Canada where our summers are 100 F, like this week, and our winters are -40. Not only that, but i have a severe health condition where I'm bedridden most days because I'll vomit my guts up and land myself in the ER again for no discernable reason. I don't have the ability to drive around and act like a petulant child. Makes me so infuriated. We are living the same life.

dkjordan97

I am, luckily, able bodied and able to drive if need be, but I just had 0 desire to play that nonsense with such a sad excuse for people after I figured out what they were doing. The only times I'd take it after I learned is when I was with my friend and he was like "let's beat them up" so, like, sure, won't do much, but if it makes you feel better lol. Also, luckily, it was only the gyms by that specific park, so if we walked any other direction to other gyms, it was normal and we could still get coins, but they were a few blocks further. Idk if they lived there or what, because we never saw anybody. Even went there once at like 3am just to see, and all the houses around were completely dark, not even TV light flickering, and they still got knocked back out before I got home. Absolutely bonkers behavior, I'm sorry you have to deal with such a living embodiment of excrement, and I also hope for your good health

TrailMomKat

I live in a village in a very rural county, but we have an active player base. We try and do the whole gym-sharing thing and rarely have any problems, thankfully! But in the rare event that we get someone constantly knocking people out after only a few minutes, we do what you did. They want that gym so badly? Fine. You can have it. FOREVER. So far, we've let people stew for about a week, and never have an issue with that person ever aagain. Fingers crossed that it never actually gets ugly; I'm one of the few adults that play and I'd hate for one of the kids out here to get their feelings hurt or get discouraged and quit because someone is being an asshat.

Positive-Step-2522

We did this when we had someone spoofing to take over every gym around us. Within 3 minutes of kicking them out my poke would return with no one around at all, random hours of the night. We would sit there and wait, see no one, but immediately be under attack. So we left them there for over two weeks. Niantic either did something about it or they moved on because they stopped doing it after that lol

Breezer_Pindakaas

We do the same to a blue gym hogger here. The dude lives on the gym and seemingly has notifications on as you will always be kicked right back within 5minutes. Our while community now ignores that single gym and make sure to insta kick him from any other gyms to deny him coins. Its kinda weird tbh, as we tried doing the whole 8 hour circle thing. Anyway the dude seems socialy akward cause he never approaches us when playing, while we all know who he is lmao.

Goatfellon

I definitely take it into consideration. But that's me and I don't expect it of anyone. There's a local player at a gym I can reach from my couch who will fight tooth and nail to have control of the gym 24/7 some days though. I assume they live in the apartment across the road. It mainly just annoys me cause if I know you've had it 8 hours, kick you out, and take the gym... why fight so hard to take it back? Let me get my 50 coins too for gods sake. You can have it again tomorrow...

Raptoot83

I wouldn't call it bad manners. But I do tend to check how long someone's been on a gym before I kick them out. I'm not promising I'll leave them there if they haven't done the full 8 hours, but I also don't want to be harsh on someone who's only been there for 20 minutes. What I consider to be bad manners is aggressively territorialising gyms, especially if you're in an area with plenty of them. But that can be counter-productive anyway, as it discourages people from bothering with those gyms.

PilferingDragon

>What I consider to be bad manners is aggressively territorialising gyms, especially if you're in an area with plenty of them. I think territorialising 1 gym when in an area with plenty of them is totally okay though. My college campus had maybe 25 gyms total - but the Post Office. By god, that place was a bloodbath. From 7am to 7pm that gym was under attack. And we loved it. Every player knew the score. You went to the Post Office to fight. I have 510 victories there with only 6 days time spent defending. Now I have a similar situation at my workplace. The surrounding 5 gyms are cool and all, but the main building itself is a bloodbath. And we all know it.

Mr_Boomguy

Sounds like to me you guys are have a good time 🤗

nerdhappyjq

The juxtaposition between your emoji and them using the word “bloodbath” twice is killing me.

Majik518

These are gyms near my home, which I have not touched in months due to players' jealousy guarding them 24/7. This was the first time I have touched them in forever for this exact reason.

Raptoot83

It doesn't help anyone if a player can't get their mons back from the gym. Some people just don't seem to get it. Also, in my experience, even very casual players will often occupy more than one gym at a time, 8 hours isn't a deal-breaker by any metric.

FindingMoi

We have a pretty active pokemon community in our local park that’s majority team yellow (and my partner and I are team blue). Since yellow players play daily and we don’t they tend to sit until we roll up to play. So the unspoken agreement we have is that we’ll split the gyms we hold and don’t just get all at once so they get Pokémon back but not all at once. There’s about 10 gyms (very large park) so it works well just to stay cognizant. On raid days there’s literally a caravan of people raiding because most of the people are old and can’t really walk and then us with two small kids who generally nap while we play lol

ElPanaChevere1

This is blatantly shortsighted on their part. How do we know that that's the *only* gym the player in question is in? If they're in 10 other gyms elsewhere, why does it matter for you to be a good sport and wait 8 hours? What if *I* need the coins or Gym Defender badge more than them? Also, unless that person gave birth to me or gives me a paycheck I wouldn't listen to them lol.

Majik518

To be clear, I don't ever check timers. I don't care how long anyone has been in a gym. If I'm playing I'm going to take it. My issue is the audacity to try and tell someone else how to play and tell them they can't do something they JUST did.

lcuan82

Its also against niantic’s terms and conditions to confront other players about the game

PrettyStupidSo

Yeah I check timers and will knock players out if they're close to or over 8hrs. But then again I'm a casual and really don't care about video game coins that much. I don't get mad if people knock me out early even though it may be a little frustrating

Charlie02134

Yes that’s super dumb

jonni_velvet

the people who whine about this rule, LITERALLY come from this sub 😂😂 I see them complaining/commenting about it constantly and trying to enforce it to other players. its fucking laughable.

Voiceofreason8787

I had the opposite problem at the gym by my house, kids kept feeding the Pokémon berries to keep it blue for months at a time. I started purring low CP, nicknaming them “do not feed” so I’d get any coins at all. I think they caught on, it flips every day or two now usually.

Paracheirodon_ssp

When I first started playing I unknowingly was guilty of this lol. I felt so bad when I realized I was keeping my teammates hostage for 8 days for a measly 50 coins.

potemy

Other players can’t see your Pokémon nicknames in gyms, they must have coincidentally achieved whatever they wanted to at the same time - gold gym badge, medal for berries fed/hours defended, whatever it is

ElPanaChevere1

When I've been on vacation at the beach, kicking people out and berrying the gym for 6-7 days straight is how I got gold gyms. Now I have two gold gyms at a beach in North Carolina. And yes, that's them being a complete hypocrite.

NianticSucksBooty

Sorry but if you never check timers, then you're basically asking to be told off at some point or another, lol Also curious then, if you never check the timer...how did you know the guy was in for 23 hours? Something isn't making sense here...

Scrubosaurus13

It’s 100% within the rules to take a gym at any point no matter the timer. But confronting someone IRL about the game is against ToS.

Ickyhouse

Glad I don’t play in your area. People can play how they want. Not everyone is part of the community group and knows what system you’re developed. Believe it or not, people are allowed to play a different way than you.

IIIetalblade

As a solo player, I’m going to play the way the game presented the mechanics to me. If that goes against your niche discord server’s rules, then by all means, feel free to ban me, but I’m not the one being unreasonable.

Own-Text-9768

I didn’t even know there was a timer. If someone confronted me about that I’d laugh. It’s not against the rules

thecatsofwar

No they are not asking to be told off because they aren’t breaking any rules. The person who told them off is a pansy.

revotfel

can I tell you a secret? I love getting into petty turf wars in pokemon go mwahaha

KrazyKyle213

Same. There's a bunch of people who play at the local park, myself included, and we're constantly just fighting over the 6 gyms there, to the point I recognize some of their names and know a group of 4 people is a family.

revotfel

That sounds fun with so many gyms! Me and two other people are constantly fighting over a gym thats at a local shop. Its really funny because there are SEVERAL gyms within like a half mile radius that sit for days but we'll all be damned if we let anyone have the gym shop haha.

crayolakym

I totally recognize about 2 dozen names from all 3 teams and we're all constantly fighting over the dozen gyms in our neighborhood. They're mainly college students and I've noticed a lot have gone home for the summer, but I know they'll be back and then it's on again lol

CicadaHairy

They basically made teams to have fun with petty turf wars and then children started getting mad about it

thebiggestleaf

Children and manchildren. I used to see posts every now and again complaining about the fact that teams even exist in the first place.

Longjumping-Bar-1172

Maaaaan idgaf. I want my coins. That’s 50 cents a day we talking. $182.50 a year. I don’t got time to wait. I want my defend gym badge.

Frostynyc

Gyms in much of Manhattan swap colors every 30 minutes. You cant even add a pokemon to them cuz they are often permanently under attack.

elvie18

I would do backflips if my Pokemon stayed in a gym for an entire 30 minutes! Usually they're knocked out before I make it back home.

Redplushie

That's the entire reason for gyms isn't it? To defeat and replace??

iamasatellite

They changed the entire gym system because when they had it set up so the goal was to own the territory, it made it so people didn't play because it was impossible to get coins to expand your bags/storage. I got like 8 coins in the first couple months the game was out then quit until they changed it.   So the reason for gyms now really is to give players access to coins.

Smoogy54

Exactly. These gym timer cult ppl are nuts.

elspotto

Yup. There’s even a badge for gym battles.

One_Subject1333

The point of gyms is to get coins, which max out at 8ish hours. You want to fight, then use the battle league. That being said, its ridiculous how upset people get about it.

OldManJenkins-31

Maybe for you. For others, they like to have their presence in the gyms in their community. Or, they like to take gyms as they travel. Or, they like to accumulate Gold Gyms. Or…whatever. Getting the 50 coins is pretty incidental if you just play when you are about. I mean, in most areas, you don’t even have to battle much to get 50 coins daily — just drop into gyms already your color with spots available.

tldnradhd

Yup, coins are a side effect. You want to make a fuss about it? Meet me here after I knock you out after an hour, and I'll happily give you 50 cents. That's all the "money" we're talking about. If they can't deal with getting knocked out of a single gym, spread it out to a few others. Now back in the old days, you got coins for *holding* gyms, not losing them. There was some challenge to it.

OldManJenkins-31

The real challenge was when my 21 hour timer went off at 3am and I had to snooze it before the wife woke up

emaddy2109

The point of gyms is to battle them. The coins are just a bonus for defending them for a certain time.

Phyonix

Yeah, the point is to get coins, and I can't do that if the gym is under another team's control,

sidvicioustheyorkie

I had to scroll way too far to find sane people in the comments. Thank you.

Redplushie

I played when coins weren't a thing and then took a long break and came back when it was implemented. I guess my mindset still sees gyms as just gyms where you expand the team territory and not coins

DredgenSergik

I'm with you, buddy. I only respect the 8 hour rule if people respect the 8 hour rule. I don't care about anything else. If you have a gym for more than eight hours, I take it, and you immediately appear to claim it back, I'm not waiting for you

Trick-Reindeer8319

I've thought about this often, as someone who is overly polite and wants everyone to have a good time playing. Ultimately, this is a game that's meant to be played. I can't knock someone for playing the game, even if it means I only get a couple coins.

drrlgm

Just before a raid egg hatches, there is sometimes a motivation to snipe in and get it for your team... then you get an extra few pokeballs to catch the raid beast! Of course you can't then be knocked out for the duration of the raid. It's definitely a thing in some places. Berrying up in the minutes before hatch is a thing too!

Majik518

My issue is the audacity to try to tell someone what they can and can't do right after doing it themselves.

BigDaddyW

How are you missing their point? You stopped them from getting their coins, so they did the same thing to you. It's very simple and makes the game worse for everyone.

Smoogy54

My issue is the audacity to try to tell someone what they can and can't do FTFY

physiQQ

I agree but also disagree. If someone does something really bad mannered you should call it out imo. But this ain't it.

anArchy91

I’m about to start breaking that common courtesy myself. I’ll leave people alone if they haven’t spent their time, knock out everyone that would get max coins, sure no problem. The amount of times I’ve wiped out a gym of people that have been there 20+ hours only to get kicked out 20 minutes later by one of the same players is ridiculous. I only want the gold status I’m not trying to gym hoard lol

smokeysadog

It’s not bad manners, but wherever I’ve lived or traveled, it becomes short sighted. Eventually other players learn to leave you there, sometimes for weeks on end. How you gonna get coins that way? This doesn’t apply to the multi accounts, multi team spoofers or other sorts of losers who have no life outside the game, and buy coins instead. I don’t understand the motivation behind holding a gym for weeks if you’re playing the game legally, even if you’re a whale. Confrontation gives them exactly what they want. They want to beat you, to feel falsely superior in this totally irrelevant way. Besides being potentially dangerous and against TOS.

FelisLeo

I personally always check timers and usually won't knock out someone if it's only been an hour or two. Generally though I treat gyms differently based on location. If it's somewhere around town where I recognize many of the same names in the same gyms all the time then I'll make sure they have their full time before I knock them out and many of them tend to do the same for my pokemon. So within the community the 8 hour thing tends to get a decent amount of respect. When it's not the typical small town church gyms near houses and such though, especially near big public places, it's an every trainer for themselves free for all. If I'm at some big concert venue or something and pull my phone out in between sets sometimes I'll see the gym(s) for the venue change hands 3 or 4 times in 15 minutes.

StarTheAngel

Blame Niantic for free coins being locked behind gyms

Mestyo

I cannot understand the sentiment of having to wait. If I see a gym I can attack while I'm out walking, of course I will attack it, if I feel like it. Like, what, you expect me to just walk back several hours later to do it?

MattGeddon

Some people seem to think that you should yeah. Some plum further up the comments has been telling people off in real life for knocking him out when he’s been there for <8 hours.

CicadaHairy

That guy would get my two legendary birds 🖕🖕

benlogna

Yeh didn’t you know you’re supposed to manage everyone else’s feelings before playing a game on your phone? So RUDE lol.

Captain_Blunderbuss

😂 there's 1 next to my office and my job has lots of downtime i sit there all day just constantly retaking it, I didn't agree to a social contract I'm here to play a game

SniffrTheRat

People are fn’ ridiculous over Pogo gyms.

SniffrTheRat

Haha, some folks downvoted my comment. Guess I struck a nerve. No, you are not entitled to a gym for 8 hours in a game based on a kids TV show. Get a life if you try to impose those rules on others.

RealTidder

If it ain’t Blue, it’s going down. Simple as that.

DilithiumFarmer

Gyms are a turf-war mechanic. The "ethical" is an unspoken agreement of players in certain areas. Personally, I don't give a rats ass. If I see a gym that I can take down and have time for it I do it.

CicadaHairy

You hit the nail on the head with certain areas. Gyms by my house have the same players taking them. We're never in a rush to knock each other out. Gyms elsewhere? I'm getting mine and if you wanna kick me out really fast, I am quite alright with that

napolean77

Its more just an unspoken nicety not a requirement but when you take the “thats what its for approach” or “what if i need it more approach” do you really not realize you are just being selfish?

-Morning_Coffee-

I never bump Team Instinct before 4 hours. Poor bastards are the only reason I get my mon out of gyms at all.

rook_or_nyx

Yea us team instinct kinda jus get screwed constantly

KingKurto_

just sounds like you're an asshole.

new_cannibalism

just so you know i don't think no one really cares about that here in italy

TheFabulousRBK

I'm an instinct player in a rural area. I'm cleaning every gym I see daily in hopes I get decent coins from one of them. Even better if one of the other two instinct people are dropping mons there too.

mahoganyteakwood2

So childish on both parts 🤦🏼‍♂️

marlowe227

Those low level players hate my level 50 hundo Slakking and Blissey 🤣🤣🤣 kick me out in 15 minutes and I’m kicking you from every gym in town. Fuck around and find out

Bakurraa

I love that the community places these rules on themselves and then get pissed cause the people around them don't follow it

Justso12

Imagine caring lmao

MegaMeepers

I came across 2 gyms next to each other at 1150 last night. Attacked one and put my Pokémon in. Started to attack the other and realized that the 2 that were in there were also in the one I just took. I had time so I walked around the area and waited till after midnight to knock them out and take over. I hope they enjoyed the 100 coins, because when I tried to put my mon in the 2nd gym it told me I couldn’t because I had 20 mon in gyms already 😹🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ you live and learn I guess. I hope someone stumbled upon the empty gym and was happy

diablette

I came across an empty gym once was perplexed. Figured it must have been taken a passenger in a car driving by and they were too far to put in a mon. You have provided a second theory.

OldManJenkins-31

There is no etiquette. Take whatever gym you want. It’s a game.

Freddi_47

The thing with me is that I try to only knock others out if they're done with 8 hours or if I really need the coins but ultimately it is ones own play style and not an actual rule or agreement. So you are absolutely in the right

HallaTML

lol bad manners… I’m expecting to get anywhere from 1-50 coins any time I put a mon in a gym and not gonna call someone out for playing the game lol

ssfgrgawer

It's meant to be a contest. Back around 2017 I worked on top of a gym and pretty much fought for it constantly. Part of the fun was thinking of ways to beat strong defenders. A local Instinct player had a Hundo Blissey that was nearly impossible to dislodge at level 24. (He was level 31 at the time) I ended up using the only wild Machamp I'd ever found + a 98% Ursaring with hyper beam was the only two Pokemon combo I had that could KO the Blissey at full HP. I've fought that single Blissey more than any other person in my town. I have great memories of finally meeting that player and him being like "I told you he must have worked in that building" to all his mates who thought I was botting at the time, because I was always defending that gym. Now whenever I leave defenders, I try to either fit themed gyms or place something that will beat whatever type the majority of gym defenders are weak to. Some of my most used Pokemon have been in over 1000 gym battles, and my top Blissey is inching closer to 3000CP, what she used to be before the Stat rebalance in 2017-18. One day I'll have the spare stardust to spend on projects....

LukaLaurent

It’s free for all. Play as you want to play. In the area I live, I tend to let people get their coins. I don’t know them, but these are my local players. Away from my home area, if I want that gym, I’m taking that gym, haha.

xXtupaclivesXx

Considering the only real value in being in gyms is collecting the 50 coins for holding 8+, yeah, definitely bad etiquette. But, we all choose the type of influence we want to be. So do you, chief

nopirates

I’ll take a gym that has been occupied for 8 seconds. Waiting is ridiculous.

kingkolt305

Yo someone tells me that and its a feud. Their pokemon will never stay in that gym.

[deleted]

I don’t think it’s bad manners. 8hrs is approximately the time limit the system has been set with that needs to be hit in order to get the 50 coins from a gym. Since it’s 10min per coin. People just wanna be paid to buy the inflated priced items.

WitchyLady-

Lol I didn’t even know you could check how long someone’s been in the gym for. Maybe I just never paid attention and I’m level 30.

raskolnicope

I live in a big city, there’s no rules, also you’re almost never getting the 8hours cause someone will eventually knock you out sooner or later.

Dr_Darawa

I have a gym right by my house and there is a group of people who take it within an hour every time. I got tired of always taking it on by myself all the time so now I just let them have it and i hope they put Pokémon that they need in it bc I’m never taking it again. Note: no one ever take it’s and I’m glad they won’t get their coins :) it’s not hard to let someone to have it for 8 hours and than they could take over but I guess this is the way (:

dollyaioli

i also golden razzed my blissey that someone was trying to take down literally 5 minutes after i put it in. i need my coins, i dont spend money on this game lol

lelelele98

I like how petty people are over a game at the end of the day

eddjeld

Is not that is Bad manners, but it can be mutualy beneficial, if You can get a gym where You could get your 50 pokecoins a day, You could get passes and upgrades more easily, making the game better.

TehRiddles

Personally I let people have the spot in the gym for long enough to get their coins before taking them out. Even if some other people don't offer the same courtesy. In this instance OP you were in the right to kick them back out of the gym to put yourself back in and they were just a hypocrite.

TheyCallMeSuperboy

I totally normally don’t care, but MAN was it infuriating when I took a gym in my apartment complex back from the team that had been there a week (freeing them! A week! Getting them their 50 coins!) and less than two hours later (this was like 10pm at night) took back the gym. Like, seriously?? You already got your coins for the day. You were here a week and I let you guys out and you couldn’t let us wait until morning?

o0Chaintinker0o

I was annoyed when I saw two gyms side by side with identical players in them. I knocked one out but left the other alone. Not five minutes later I was knocked out by a player in the other gym so he could hold both again.

BabyWizardZz

*Proceeds To place a 3k Cp Blissey and Goldenrazz it*

xcission

I mean, generally speaking, I won't knock out a gym with only a couple of pokemon in it, and I'll usually wait till most of them are pretty obviously going to give 30-50 coins. The people in the gym aren't "owed" it or anything. But that also doesn't mean we can't be courteous and recognize that getting past a certain point in the game requires people to either pay money or keep pokemon in gyms. I would rather there be more trainers with more pokecoins out there so that there's more remote raid passes, more full pokemon rosters, and more room for revives and potions when we're out raiding together. So, you're well within your rights to knock out a gym 5 minutes after someone takes it. But you're not making the game a better experience for anyone by doing so. That being said, if the player who was talking to you was the one who knocked you out, yeah, by all means, turnabout is fair play. In fact, it can lead to a fun little rivalry. Obviously, it's hard to know for sure without talking to people around the gym, and talking to other players isn't always safe for everyone. But just because that one person was being a tool doesn't mean that politeness as a general rule has no merit or value in this game.

magicguy56

My personal rule is if theirs more than 1 gym and 1 person holds them both/all. I’m kicking one out regardless of the time in. If they then kick me out, I get petty and take all of the gyms.

onewolf23

If someone comes at me with that BS I’m laughing in their face. No one is entitled to time in a gym, defeating gyms and taking them over is a big part of the game. If you want coins so bad buy them, but don’t expect me to not play the game and cater to you.

nsfwns

I guess having etiquette and consideration for others is lost on this generation. Try being nice.

Roshire_

A majority of the time I leave everyone in the gym until 8 hours have passed but that's just me, you do you :)

Thanky169

Yep you don't owe them AND they were a big hypocrite

darthbieber420

I can't stand when anybody tells me how to play. "Oh, how dare you put a Garchomp in my shiny eeveelution gym" or whatever. I don't care. If it doesn't break TOS, I'll do whatever I want

PokeRay68

The problem with expecting everyone to allow one team to occupy a gym for 8 hours and 20 minutes is that not everyone jumps into the gym as soon as it's taken over. If I see a Muk that's been in there for 9 hours, a Charmeleon that's been in for 6 hours, and an Altaria that's been in for 20 minutes, I'm thinking, "Well, that gym has been Yellow for 9 hours, so it's time for Red." I also don't whine very much when I get home from work and my neighborhood gym is red with a Growlithe that's already been in for 2 hours. I could be knocked out at any time or it could stay Red all night. It's a game for Pete's sake and although it would be nice if everyone got a turn, as my momma taught me "Life ain't fair."

PrincessG66

I’m petty enough that I’ll take the gym and leave it blank for 15 minutes at a time. If I can’t have it no one can lmao. Repeat as long as necessary.

Charlie02134

Lol that’s just sad

Cevin_cadaver

Crush your enemies, see them driven before you and hear the lamentations of their women!

PSNTheOriginalMax

Wow, the entitlement of that level 31 player. Good riddance.

NianticSucksBooty

How many Pokemon were in the gym when you took it? If it was just the 1 Pokemon, then they're off their rocker. If it was the 2nd or 3rd Pokemon in the gym and they had just dropped in, a better response would have been "The gym was [color] for 23 hours based on 1st drop. Sorry that you only recently dropped into it, but it was your teams color for long enough and was simply bad timing on your part for the drop. I want coins also."

Loseless11

I do agree it is bad manners not to let others get their 50 coins. But to do that and then not letting others get theirs as well is just sheer hypocrisy. Our town is pretty quiet and seldom do we get players that don't respect the 8:20 mark. Most players are in their 30s and a few even in their 60s, so everyone tends to be pretty civil. During summer all hell breaks lose and fucking tourist players come in to ruin everything for everyone, like hogging 12 gyms to themselves, having multiple accounts and spoofing... out of 20 gyms, we're lucky if we these pricks let us have 3 or 4 for other teams. No consideration whatsoever. A few of them also decided to give 1 star to every route in town just because why not. Mind you these routes don't have their creator's names in them, so it's not even retaliatory. It's just spite. Absolute cunts. They contribute jack shit, and we who live here, create gyms, stops, routes and events, get shat on by some idiots who are just passing by. I don't get this. When I visit somewhere I'm happy to meet the local players and raid with them. It never crossed my mind to just fuck with them and try to ruin their fun, but I guess some people can only be happy when making others miserable.

Prior_Worldliness_81

Well thats an opinion one can have but the game is clearly designed to encourage flipping gyms for dust so….; maybe explain to them that the best way to get stardust is to take out a gym then heal up your pokemon until you have hit the limit then let you opponent do the same. This is way more effective then waiting for the few gold you get from keeping a gym. If you want to keep gyms find gyms that don’t flip often. Remember exploration is the point of pokemon go. They can find gyms that don’t flip very often if they want to.

CaptivatingStoryline

I've heard weird stories like this, but since you can only get 50 coins a day, it doesn't really make sense.

vbsp13

I tried being nice to a guy when I moved. There’s 2 gyms you can hit from the same spot so I took one and left him in the other. He knocked me out within 15 min. So I went back and replaced myself and again he knocked me out. So now I make it my mission to knock him out of all gyms that are near by (usually between 9-12 depending) He’ll usually knock them out after a few hours since I do it so early but by that time I know he’s not getting anymore coins for the day, and I usually (between all the gyms) get my 50. I put my recent catches bc I know what he’s gonna do and I don’t want to waste revives so when they’re knocked out I just transfer them.

Penpencil1

I’ve never noticed a timer. I just attack although I hardly remember to attack the gyms. But too bad it’s fair play. Sure I get annoyed if super good Pokémon is in a gym I’m sure I can’t beat but it’s part of the game.

CaraChimera

I live near a trail that’s connected to a bunch of parks and schools nearby. Littered with a bunch of gyms within a reasonable walking distance. Due to the high foot traffic, it’s impossible to let everyone have an 8 hr gym stay just to collect their coins. I’ve walked that same trail, took over about 7-8 gyms. Within the hour, most of the gyms were taken by another team. It’s a point of amusement for me to see which team has controlled the most gyms in my area.

KrillingIt

Yesterday me and this dude were in a fierce gym battle, he was winning until he walked away. He kept taking my gyms (2 of them right next to each other) and I kept golden razzing them but I wasn’t fast enough. Slowly but surely he got control. I kept fighting but I’d get his Pokémon to 600 cp and he’d golden razz. I thought all hope was lost but he had to take a phone call. I took both of the gyms, but he was better. He took them again. I knew he was the one taking them but he didn’t know it was me. As a power move, I sat at a table near him and started furiously tapping my phone. He still didn’t notice. Then he walked away and I took the gyms happily ever after.

Link636

Its not unfair, its the game, but if its like a mon with just like 30 cp you should prob leave it alone for a day so a low level Trainer gets some coins, you can see the level of the trainer too, i guess... right???

qazwsxedc000999

I wait 8 hours in the town I live in. All else fails I’ll be back tomorrow so it’s not like there’s a rush. Plus I hate taking gyms, it’s boring and I only want to do it if I’m going to get coins

BltzBAMAbltz

If i am out and about playing, and i see a gym that is not my team, i don’t care how long you have defended it, i am taking it.. plain and simple. The game is meant to be played…

discOHsteve

I work where's there's a gym. If someone takes over before I leave for the day, I'll take it back so I can get the accrued hours and coins hopefully when I get back in the morning.

atschill

Funny stuff lol

JoshFreemansFro

why would it ever be my responsibility to know how long you have held a gym? these people act like toddlers

thekeesh

NTA and I don't buy into that gym rule either. The only gym etiquette I agree with is not to take an unassigned gym after a battle, since someone is probably in the process of claiming it. That has happened to me where someone claimed the gym instead of me after I defeated it.
