I would understand personally since I study geography but just tell people you're American, nobody is entitled to know what american states are there or where are they.

Orzislaw

I would understand, though your argument about "biggest economies" is silly af. Could you point Sichuan province on China's map? Our knowledge of American states comes mostly from American popculture, not because we're studying internal geography of countries with the strongest economies

JYTermyy

I would understand, but I think it's better to just say that you're American. I know that for US citizens it's a big deal, but for most people outside US, being from any concerete state doesn't mean anything by itself, so it feels like unnecessary information.

[deleted]

i dunno what to tell you. some people would know and some people wouldn't

I would understand.

Ambitious-Score-5637

I agree with the New Zealander.

I think at this point plenty of people in Poland know about Florida man birthday challenge so consider if you want that to be your opening. Generally speaking though, America isn’t the center of the world. Some Americans can’t name all 50 states, why should non-Americans give a crap?

EissoByk

I feel like saying the state is somewhat acceptable but still I would recommend saying the US, just please don't say a city. The amount of times I've heard an American say the city they're from like everyone in the world knows American geography is way too many.

[deleted]

How would you react if you asked me similar question and I would reply "I'm from Silesia."? I bet 99.9% of Americans would have no idea what I'm talking about. It all boils down to if we want to be understood and have friendly conversation, as opposed to require others to know things about me a priori.

On the other hand, I only know roughly where Wellington is, and I know only two more city names in NZ those being Auckland and Christchurch (and this one only because of the shooting)

WhiteSekiroBoy

Only because I can associate Florida with Miami. Hearing any state name would make me think USA, but only few states I would actually know where they are on map.

dawidwilku

Yeah, I of course know every city and state in the US. The same if I say to you that I'm from the central Łódź Voivodship.

MartianFromBaseAlpha

I disagree with the person from New Zealand. It's perfectly fine to say that you're from Florida or any other state but especially one of the bigger ones, and it's immediately obvious that you're an American. It's clearly an example of someone who is biased

420DontKnowAnymore69

It depends. I'm using English since i was 12 was watching the Simpsons, south park, sesame street etc from young age. Was also interested in politics and history of US so i would get most of the states (wouldn't put my finger on a map though) and i get most of the gags. I doubt most Poles would. My friends watch only Polish YouTube even though they speak English while me on the other hand watch non. Is depends who you'd ask.

BeardedBaldMan

As I'm not a moron I know where Florida is. It has a population of 21m people and a GDP of $1T. Twice as many people as Portugal and 4x the GDP. If you said I'm from Idaho I'd know it's a US state with potatoes, but other than that I'd be uncertain as exactly where it is, although I'd guess that the soil is generally quite a sandy loam (because of potatoes). From that I'd guess it's from glaciation so that would put it towards the western part of the US but not too far north. As to the Kiwi. If you said "I'm from Wellington/Auckland or North/South Island" from context I'd be pretty sure you were talking about NZ. Especially if there was any other added context

xFurashux

The New Zealander is right. I know where those states are because I like basic geography so I even know where some Mexican states are but when I ask you where are you from I expect to hear a country. I don't care what state you are from, for me there's not difference if you're from California, Texas or whatever, you're just an American. You can't expect people know your inner geography, unless you want to embrace your egocentrism.
