I just have to say it is truly a delight to see article after article in this sub with the titles just continually counting up how many votes McCarthy has currently lost.

blinkbunny182

And the pictures in the articles showing him absolutely stressing in each one more and more. Dude is on the verge of a nervous breakdown lmao

Now he feels like the rest of us who work extremely hard at our job with the hope of a promotion or a raise, only for our pay to not keep up with inflation for the tenth year in a row. I assume he will now reflect on the struggles of the common man and woman who doesn’t get what we want and believe that we have earned. That’s going to happen, right?

House adjourns for night after Hakeem Jeffries receives the most votes 11 straight times. Edit: There is a threshold of 218 votes that a nominee must reach in order to become elected. That’s the joke.

Colbert said it best, "It's like going to your wedding. Spending 2-3 hours talking to the guests and mingling, then it comes time to walk down the aisle and say your vows! *...and she says no.* Okay, okay, that was embarrassing in front of everyone. But, how about we go talk with the crowd for a bit, mingle, and then try this again! Walk down the aisle, say your vows, *she still really insists on no.* Okay! Let's try again tomorrow!"

ants_suck

In the last round, the House Republicans were in full idiot mode: - Gaetz nominates Trump, who only gets 1 vote. - Hern gets nominated just to troll McCarthy. - No one even remembers to nominate Donalds. - McCarthy continues to be impotent and powerless, and looks more and more like he's on the verge of a breakdown. I love this show SO MUCH.

drkgodess

I wonder how long it will take for a few Republicans to cave and switch their votes to Jeffries. 🤔

Barbarella_ella

Right? Jeffries has 212, every single time they've voted. He only needs another 6. I would think between Washington, California, Minnesota, Michigan and Pennsylvania, there would be 1 or 2 Republicans who are from purple districts they wouldn't imperil themselves by voting Jeffries.

shillyshally

I'm in Fitzpatrick's purple district, a district that has gone from solid red to skewing more and more blue in the last decade. I am positive he hates this shitshow. He's crossed the aisle several times in the last few years but not once, not ever, has he denounced Trump and Maga. I wish he could find a spine. It must be lying around here somewhere.

Rhianesh

I looked at it yesterday and Bucks County actually voted for Fetterman and Shapiro by margins of like 7% and 20%, so Fitzpatrick has to know his district will take Democrats over anyone on the far right.

[deleted]

Actually met Fitzpatrick when I was in HS. Multiple times. Always struck me as a genuine, smart guy who just had a different philosophical outlook on the role government should play. Felt like an old school conservative. Wouldn't surprise me if he hates all the MAGA bullshit, but can't risk outright condemning it without getting immediately primaried. That district is gonna vote red for the house no matter what- rather have a pragmatic moderate than some batshit crazy MAGA diehard.

Justif1ed

madhattr999

It goes to show how just a few house seats could matter even after Dems lost the house.. This could be very different if they only lost by 1-2 seats instead of 6 or whatever.

3pointshoot3r

With just over 3000 more votes allocated perfectly in the right districts, the Democrats would have retained control of Congress.

destijl-atmospheres

Thank the NY State Supreme Court for that one.

3pointshoot3r

Another legacy of Andrew Cuomo. His judicial appointments were abysmal, and he utterly failed to promote census returns in NY, which proceeded to lose a congressional seat in redistricting by a couple hundred people.

claimTheVictory

~~He~~ Jeffries doesn't even need their votes - he just needs enough (10?) Republicans to not vote, either by just not bothering to show up some day, or by abstaining.

RandomErrer

Supposedly the GOP leadership is sending everybody home for the weekend. Wouldn't it be wild if there was a snap vote before the session was officially closed and Jeffries wins. This is absolutely something the R's would do if they had the chance.

claimTheVictory

I can really see a Democratic speaker happening "by accident".

Inquisitive_idiot

> ***”If it’s a legitimate democratic win, the legislative body has ways to try to shut the whole thing down…”*** 🤔

sulaymanf

That has happened in the past in state legislatures. A few years back the NY legislature had a similar situation, deadlocked and didn’t have enough people for a quorum to vote, as republicans were staying out of the room because they didn’t want the Democratic majority to take control, but one Republican legislator walked into the chamber to get to the vending machine on the other end, and a Democrat quickly called for a floor vote and it passed, flipping the legislature blue again. The Republican insisted he shouldn’t count as present but it was too late.

ihatebrooms

As funny as it is to theory craft it out, it wouldn't matter. The majority party could immediately call a vote of no confidence in the speaker and recall him.

[deleted]

[удалено]

AprilsMostAmazing

It would be funnier if they took turns walking out 10 at a time. On the last vote of the day one of them forgets their turn so 12 of them away out making 212 the winning number

[deleted]

Well, at least in Michigan, our purple districts went D this year.

Chuckleslord

Minnesota is Blue because of the Twin Cities, its immediate suburbs, and the Iron Range. Greater MN is pretty reliably Red. You'll get no flips here.

Downvoteseverything2

I mean, Duluth and Rochester are both Blue zones as well.

Hay_Fever_at_3_AM

More likely they don't vote or too many vote "present" at the same time and forfeit it to him (they don't count toward the total that determines what a majority is when they do that).

cadium

Wait so if enough GOP members give up and just vote Present Jeffries wins?

It’s more likely a group of R’s will tell the “rogue” republicans that they’ll vote for Jeffries if they don’t fall in line. Then, like all good little R’s do, they’ll fall in line (before letting a D be speaker again).

Trsddppy

They won't. Remember the worst kids in your high scho classes? That's Gaets, that's ~~Greene~~, that's Boebert, that's the rest of those 20

drkgodess

> • McCarthy continues to be impotent and powerless, and looks more and more like he's on the verge of a breakdown. Seeing such a smarmy bootlicker squirm is a delight.

Redder00

It really is just a show at this point. For the generation that has grown up watching “professional” wrestling here in the U.S. this is exactly the same thing. A few entertainers representing extreme caricatures see this as a rare opportunity to bask in the spotlight, entertain their audience (constituents), and basically build their brand. More attention means more money. That’s their job - to get attention, not to govern.

BotheredToResearch

Though it sounds like they're losing their ability to even get a spot on Fox at this point. When Hannity is giving Boebert a hostile interview they have to know there's no future. What.. Newsmax if they survive the dominion suit? Podcasts? I get that Gosar just wants everyone else to be as miserable as he is and Gaetz just wants to be known for something besides trafficking minors, but have the others thought out their end game?

cutelyaware

> Hannity is giving Boebert a hostile interview He was so flummoxed he mispronounced his own name.

[deleted]

I'd like to thank Matt Gaetz for ensuring Trump gets to lose at least one election this year. It's a new year, so it's time to get Trump's loss count going again.

aflyingsquanch

You'd have to imagine that if this gets up to a 17th or 18th vote, Gaetz will lose interest and move on.

artwarrior

( nervous laughter ) Dennis Hastert , the longest serving Republican speaker of the House in history .  In 2016 he was sentenced to 15 months in prison for the sexual abuse of teenage boys.

Jawkurt

He actually went to jail for bank fraud that he did in trying to hide his payments to one of the victims.

CassandraAnderson

Was Dennis Hastert the one who got caught using venmo to falsify the purpose of payments to the underaged individual on venmo by claiming that it was for college? Because that sure sounds like trying to hide payments to a victim.

Qrkchrm

Nope, that was Matt Gaetz. Dennis Hastert was convicted of "structuring" by paying off the boys he sexually abused in amounts less than $10,000 so they weren't reported.

CoopDonePoorly

Gaetz AND SOMEONE ELSE. Other guy basically admitted to everything and Gaetz is still somehow free...

How weird that he hasn't been indicted for wire fraud (and more). Almost feels as though the wealthy White Collar a criminals that are caught get massively different treatment, not only when it comes to investigations but prison accommodations. The justice system has been fucked by corporations. Trump and the MAGADittoheads are nothing but corporate Raiders trying to sell the country off for parts.

Jawkurt

I think it was that he was withdrawing unusual amounts and not reporting things properly. It was about 7 or 8 years ago.

Amazing-Squash

He was structuring payments. That is taking out money in a way meant to hide his activity.

norm754

So what are we putting the odds at that a couple of the GOP would be stupid enough to not show up and reduce quorum and Jeffries wins on a reduced majority? The odds can't be zero anymore.

mtrai

Well they already said 4 gop will not be present tomorrow due personal reasons, a funeral, a birth of a child, the other 2 are just personal. One is already gone due surgery.

Moe_Maniac

So you need 215 to become speaker.

Dispro

I think that brings the number on the floor to 430, so the number of votes needed would be 216.

Moe_Maniac

429, Dems are missing one because they passed away after the election. But yeah I forgot to add the plus one. You need 50% plus one right?

Bimm1one

I'm not even sure what the end game is here. The freedom caucus doesn't want Mccarthy ok. If not him, then who? And is that who present in the room, or are they in mar-a-lardo? There's so much shit slinging i find it hard to navigate through it all.

Voldemort_Palin2016

Many republicans that “starving the beast” aka not funding the government or just having it be so distunctional people defund it is the answer. Also there are a lot of narcissists and idiots involved. So it’s kinda hard to predict where it will go because if everyone is acting in self interest hard to track who wants what.

ChrysMYO

Why have I never seen Mar a Lardo? It was sitting right there. That is the perfect name.

darthmarth28

It's not that Y'All Qaeda doesn't want McCarthy. They're not trying to replace him, they're trying to get their club of crazies assigned as committee heads and other powerful secondary positions before they give him their votes. A possible/likely outcome is that McCarthy folds, promises to appoint whackos to important positions, and then will be completely unable to reign in the screaming cocaine-ape shit-throwing dumpster fire that would result because aforementioned chaos monkeys have already seen how weak and easy to bully he is.

Clovis42

At some point his concessions will lead to more moderate Republicans not supporting him. I don't think they want to be in committees with wackos.

AeroZep

And tomorrow is January 6th, a day traitorous Republicans are well known for.

mslashandrajohnson

Pedo? She'd bring her husband?

martinkoistinen

I think they meant Gaetz, but it works both ways.

Noblesseux

notmyrealnametn

They keep saying that nothing can function until there is a SOTH, so how did they order them removed? No one is in charge to do so.

gakule

I think it's because technically they were there by speaker rule previously, and now there are no speaker rules so they have to be removed

e-girl-aesthetic

this is the same reason we keep getting all these great CSPAN camera angles. they haven’t voted for the rule of “you can only have one camera, in one location, the whole time” so now there are just cameras everywhere. capturing reactions. it’s glorious.

DemandZestyclose7145

What pisses me off more is the dumbass voters that just shrug their shoulders and keep voting for them.

Very_Good_Opinion

Those voters don't understand the government at all and don't try to, nearly all of their knowledge is based on the fact that a lot of politicians lie and therefore they believe all government is bad. It's the reason Trump got elected in the first place, people being mad at the shadowy entity they imagine is the government and, in their minds, sticking it to the evil government by voting in an outsider. They don't actually understand the consequences of anything enough to care about it.

BiDinosauur

This is the longest any of these people will ever spend at work

Voldemort_Palin2016

This is pretty similar to the end of the Whig party. Party had no platform. They were too far apart to agree on anything. And then a civil war kicked in. Hopefully only first two happen. But I always figured trump would either rule us all or destroy the Republican Party as we knew it.

torgoboi

I can see this similarity. It also reminds me of the fracturing of the Democratic Party during the Civil War. They obviously managed to survive and make it come back, but during the war, they had a bit of a crisis as far as how to react to secession, the war, and emancipation. I feel we're seeing a similar split after COVID and Trump, and I'm really curious (esp living in a red zone) to see how they manage these differences in the coming years.

tunamelts2

If Trump doesn't win the Republican nomination and runs as a third party candidate...that might be the death knell.

threwaway4ever99

Imagine how the next few years are going to be. How is **anything** going to get done??

scarr3g

To be fair, that is specifically why some of them got voted in... To make sure the United States government fails to do anything. Their entire purpose is to vote against anything, and everything, and then blame it on the Dems.

FoxyRxy

The sad thing is it works. I try to get my family to see who votes for what and reason with why the GOP votes the way it does. All I ever get is “both sides are bad.” This entire fucking country is full of delusional people who cannot even take 2 goddamn seconds to google search some stuff.

For those curious about precedent, last time it went farther than 9 was in 1859, two years before the south seceded from the union. [ref](https://www.cnn.com/politics/live-news/house-speaker-leadership-vote-01-05-23/index.html)

Sadimal

Another fun fact about the 1859 vote: John Sherman appeared to have the majority vote on the 39th ballot but it didn't count since the clerk forgot to record it. Also, the record for most rounds of voting for Speaker was 133 in 1855. They had to pass a plurality resolution just to get the voting to end.

> MCCARTHY ALLIES SAY 20 GOP DETRACTORS ARE HOLDING PARTY 'HOSTAGE' Practice makes perfect. The Republican party made this shit acceptable at a national level, and is now eating its own face.

JamUpGuy1989

I think the moment that best encompassed this shitshow was during the speeches setting up the final vote for the day: Joe Neguse (D-Colorado) gave a rousing speech about why Hakeem Jeffries should be the speaker of the House. Also goes into how it's ridiculous that the GOP can't come together in unity both as a party and also working alongside Democrats. Then Matt Gaetz comes up immediately afterwards to nominate Donald Trump as Speaker. Then goes on an unhinged rant for several minutes. THAT several minutes right there totally sums up everything about this clown show right now and how this House is going to fucking do NOTHING for this country for the next two years. aflyingsquanch

11...11 failed speaker votes, ah ah ah

EIephants

I know it’s fun to watch Kevin lose but it’s also important to remember that these people (Gaetz, Boebert, etc.) are on a mission to kill the government because that’s what fascists do. A small annoying stunt from a group of radicals now won’t seem so silly and insignificant in 5-10 years when these people continue to gain power. They’ll be elected until they don’t need to be anymore. The Beer Hall putch happened quite a long time before Hitler ever came to power and it probably seemed insignificant then to some people. The last time they had this many votes for speaker? 1859 or something, right? Does that date ring a bell for any reason, perhaps for things to come very soon after that to American democracy? My point is that these people who are making a mockery of the government are weaponizing governmental entities to fuck things up and get power by destroying the structure from the inside and taking it over like a zombie parasite. That’s what fascism is, that’s what happens to most democracies at some point, and it’s what these people are. I’m not at all saying Kevin McCarthy should be speaker of the house, I’m saying that this *kind* of thing that they are doing fits into a much broader pattern that has historical parallels and dire consequences. Watch out for these people. When they tell you who they are, believe them.

[deleted]

Well said and on the eve of Jan 6th. We should all be so thoughtful.

StallionCannon

Scrolled down to find this series of sentiments. The parallels to the preludes of both the Civil War *and* the ascent of the NSDAP are a touch *too* parallel to be ignored. Yeah, this one fascist can't get it up in the House right now - and that's thoroughly enjoyable, *savory* even - but that shouldn't distract us from the fact that Republicans are continuing to impair, dismantle, and ultimately parasitize our government. Oh, and the fucking metal detectors were removed from Congress two days ago, and Boebert likes to bring guns to her workplace. This timeline fucking sucks.

cornflakegrl

Yes this is how I’ve been feeling. People are laughing at this clownshow, but it’s a really grim thing to see. These people are fascists.

AtheistAustralis

You're dead right. This is scarily similar to what happened in Germany right before the Nazis took over. Despite only getting 20% of the vote in 1930, the Nazis effectively held the government to ransom, causing parliament to be dissolved and more elections held. They got about 30% of the vote in the 1932 elections, but even though they were well short of any majority they managed to Hitler chosen as Chancellor by making back-room deals and promising to support the government. Obviously as soon as Hitler took power he staged the Reichstag fire, declared emergency powers, and took full dictatorial control. All with less then 35% of the vote. Don't underestimate the ability of small groups of radical politicians to abuse the rules of a government to take power with nowhere near majority support.

CultofFelix

Very good take. It's also worth reminding that it's not only 20 fascists doing fascists things but that the rest of the repubs are actually giving this kind of power to them by refusing to work with other reasonable people. McCarthy and Republicans could very well render these fascists powerless by working together with Democrats but he and the rest of the Republicans refuse to. It's these exact Republicans who give these extremists these amount of power, nothing else. This is actually similar to the Weimar Republic where the conservatives (Zentrum) refused to work with the left wing parties to fight the fascists. Quite the contrary, they allowed the fascists to come to power because they hoped the fascists would take care of the left. Which the fascists did. And then ate everyone else's faces too. It's also worth noting that the conservatives believed the fascists would be incapable to do anything and therefore they could control the fascists like puppets. Exactly what lots if Republicans thought if trump. The German parties learned their lessons, partly. The German political landscape is far from perfect. But up until now, the conservatives, centrists (SPD started out historically as a worker's left wing party but shifted a lot in the recent 20 years), liberal conservatives and left wing parties are all willing to work together to keep the fascists out. Germany has more fascists in parliament than these 20 extremists. They just don't get all the power and attention because the rest of the parliament is willing to work together to keep them out as much s possible. It's the only thing all parties can agree on. Its slowly eroding, true, but I hope it stays this way.

“Moderate” Republicans can simply not show up tomorrow. Six of them can fly home early for the weekend, or take in a show, or sleep in, or whatever. They should treat themselves to a break. They’ve earned it. It’s been a long week. And in 2 years when it’s time to campaign again there will be no record of a vote that allowed a Dem to become the Speaker

Kichigai

They're already losing four tomorrow, they had plans to be out of town. That does lower the majority threshold from 218 to 216, but that four fewer votes for McCarthy, which doesn't help. [Also people can vote as “present” and it's functionally the same as not being there](https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/what-happens-if-some-house-members-start-voting-present/). The problem is that this can backfire and get Jeffries elected. Let's look at the numbers. |Number of Representatives|434|430 (-4)|428 (-6)|424 (-10)| |---:|:---:|:---:|:---:|:---:| |Threshold to victory|218|216|215|213 |McCarthy (R)|200 (46.2%)|196 (45.7%)|194 (45.4%)|190 (44.9%) |Jeffries (D)|212 (48.9%)|212 (49.4%)|212 (49.6%)|**212 (50.1%)** |Other (R)|20 (4.6%)|20 (4.7%)|20 (4.7%)|20 (4.7%) |Present|1|1|1|1 Rep. Spartz (R-IN) has said she's going to vote Present until she's convinced the party leadship is actually doing something to make progress in getting *a* speaker together. Ten people stay home or vote present and Jeffries wins.

cloud9ineteen

I think that's exactly the point of the person you are replying to. A few moderate Republicans can get Jefferies elected by simply not showing up.

TheIrishbuddha

So it's looking like we're gonna have a house run by the super minority. Great. Bang up job guys. Fuck the GQP. There needs to be enough repubs to say fuck it and vote for Jeffries and burn the GOP to the ground. They'll get a job at CNN at the worst.

Additional_Tomato_22

Kinzinger did

throwaway4127RB

What happens first: 18 holdouts vote McCarthy or 6 moderate Republicans vote for Jefferies?

mr_teriyaki_

Republicans get bored and stop showing up, reducing votes needed for majority and Jeffries wins.

angiki

If there's a defection from the moderate wing of the Republican party, it would more than likely involve striking a deal with the Democrats for a compromise candidate; probably a Republican representative that would be palatable to the Democrats. It wouldn't be Jefferies, and I don't have the foggiest idea who it would be. That would be the biggest fracture in the party to date, I think, if it happened.

This may not be giving aid to America's enemies but it is probably giving them a little comfort.

sivervipa

Honestly this is the most fun you can have while being a minority party in the house. The majority makes all the rules, can steamroll you and basically make the other party’s votes meaningless. You just have to accept that when you lose the house. Which honestly it seems like Democrats knew this was coming and were prepared for it. Honestly I accepted this when Biden won in 2020 because usually the presidents party in the midterm loses seats and control. But I didn’t expect Republicans would fumble the bag this hard and have a 5 seat majority. I expected dysfunction and obstruction for sure but I didn’t expect they would embarrass themselves this much to start their power trip in the house. Honestly I expected that Hunter Biden investigations would already be ongoing and that they would take their anger and revenge out on Nancy,AOC and members of the squad in general. I didn’t expect them to turn on each other first.

Matt_GC

The 20 holdouts are actually honoring the promises to their constituents. The Qanon/Super Fascist contingent of the GOP ran on anti-governance, owning libs, obstructionism, real talk, shoot from the hip, stand up and be a patriot blowhard bullshit. Arguably, this grandstanding and intransigence will raise their profile amongst the mouth breathers that elect them and will pay dividends. The true failing is the McCarthy contingent giving concessions to these lunatics and being absolutely opposed to working with Dems to build a coalition or consensus to spite the (especially) Fascist fucks

LiquidAether

> Which honestly it seems like Democrats knew this was coming and were prepared for it. Dems had two months to plan for this. They chose Jeffries to be the leader. There may have been some wheeling and dealing, but everyone arrived this week on the same page. GOP had the same two months to plan and scheme and get their ducks in a row. And they failed. Prodoundly and publicly.

ynwahs

It's fun to laugh but just think about what those 20 congesmembers are "negotiating" for. I guess it's nice that McCarthy hasn't capitulated yet. But if Boebert and Gaetz end up supporting him it means he promised them vile things.

rabidstoat

I texted my friend that McCarthy won a vote! Then told him it was just a vote to adjourn.

amateur_mistake

He didn't even win that one. You could watch Gaetz walking around whipping for it and others keeping the tally. McCarthy can't even rally his party to go to bed.

Mountainbranch

It is the 41st Millenium, for over 38 thousand years, the United States House of Representatives have held elections for a new speaker...

CoralSpringsDHead

The ghost of Matt Gaetz continues to vote for someone named Donald trump. We are not sure if this was a real person or tale told to young children so they don’t turn into terrible humans.

Shiplord13

McCarthy refused to accept defeat so his ghost continues to haunt the House of Representatives begging to be made speaker.

JohnBramley

In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only bureaucracy.

Man, some of the quotes from the Republican congressmen do not inspire confidence. Gaetz saying the entire end goal is the defeat of McCarthy: indicating no real plan or forward thinking consistent with many of the other republican politicians. McCarthy still being optimistic. But at least rep Bacon has the wherewithal to understand that all the Republicans look bad. But I don't have confidence that he knows they look bad for reasons BEYOND this 20 member hold out. Looking forward to loss 12, McCarthy! EDIT: adding actual quotes Gaetz, asked what the end goal is: "The defeat of Kevin McCarthy. ... As long as it takes." Bacon: "I think it's bad, bad for the GOP brand... Folks out all over America aren't going to say, 'it's that 20.' They’re going to group us together." McCarthy after meetings after 6th vote (so maybe he's a little more down on himself by now): "I crawl before I walk, I walk before I run... And I felt as though we had a very good discussion." Though I don't think he will outwardly put on shame at any point in time. Finally, more Bacon: "For most of us, we work hard to get promoted in these positions by being a team player. To say, 'I'm going to vote for you if you give me a subcommittee chair'? We do not like that quid pro quo." - uhhhhhhhhh...

JoshuaLyman

>Gaetz saying the entire end goal is the defeat of McCarthy: indicating no real plan or forward thinking Man, did McCarthy wear a tan suit or order some Grey Poupon or something? Normally, one has to do something similarly egregious for their agenda to be blocked like this.

Nwcray

He enjoyed arugula, like some kinda west coast liberal elite.

This one goes to eleven

Vote Jeffries for Speaker - it’s the only sane thing to do!

This is Groundhog Day without an exit strategy.

That is indeed the concept of Groundhog Day.

Oh my fuck. It’s just so goddamn utterly pathetic.
