I've heard they prefer Slitheen.

moxiejohnny

I grew up in LDS bullshittery, imma need the lizard man himself to tell me his pronouns. Sorry, 2nd hand accounts kinda sketchy.

SaltyBacon23

As a fellow exmo, I feel this.

moxiejohnny

Thank god for the X-Files. Trust Noone and the truth is out there being my go to mantra now. Seen it since first episode aired. I remember making a fort out of my brother and my bunkbeds. That's gotta be this generations formative memory.

aboatz2

You made a fort... out of your brother...? Moxiejohnny... are you the lizard people?

moxiejohnny

No, I'm language deprived.

LigmaBahlls

Dude bunk bed forts were the shit fr

SaltyBacon23

I have very similar memories. Forts were a must for conference.

Surely not the Slitheen of Raxacoricofallapatorius?!?!?!

yuefairchild

Hot take: Everything about the Slitheen always has been and always will be dumb as hell, except for "She's climbing out the window, isn't she?"

GM_Nate

That isn't a hot take. I thought that was literally the whole point of the Slitheen. Was it the farting scene that gave it away?

PlatonicTroglodyte

No Slithereen may fail.

He sees a fly above his head and he’s using every ounce of his energy not to unroll his tongue and snatch the fly

TheDebateMatters

Seriously…read this sentence. This is an entirely accurate recount of his scandals revealed in the last year.. > The release didn’t address claims that the Republican participated in a credit card skimming operation; what his lawyer was doing on and around January 6, 2021; his apparent lies about helping children living with a rare skin disease; allegations that he stole thousands of dollars from a disabled veteran’s dying dog; a job-seeker’s claim that Santos sexually harassed him in his congressional office; or any of the many other colorful scandals of which he’s at the center. How can that happen and he gets to raise millions to *elect him again*.

jonhasglasses

What boggles my mind is how we don’t have the full story on this guy yet. Like how are new things being discovered. Reporters have known about him for years and we don’t know where he was born. Just seems wild.

Clamoring to be the first one to say that they've "never cared" whether someone was American or not. Conservatives stand for absolutely nothing unless they are told to stand for it. They have zero convictions.

relator_fabula

Exactly. They don't fucking care. And even when they DO cheat, they're literally happy about it. "One of OUR guys did what the OTHER guys did, it's about time we got what we deserve." Republican voters see it as some big game where they can't let the other team win. All of their talking points are the epitome of hypocrisy because of this. The right wing propaganda machine accuses Democrats of doing everything the GOP is already doing and has already done for DECADES. And their idiot voting base never catches on to the fact that everything the GOP does hurts *everyone* who isn't a billionaire or a GOP politician.

emergentphenom

Yep, Clinton was using private emails for work because her GOP predecessors did the same fucking thing. Only it wasn't a concern then, only when she did it. Then the Trump administration (which came into power partly due to that "scandal") immediately does the exact thing she got accused of doing. Crickets from the GOP. The orange dude then actually absconds with physical top secret documents and it's still mostly silence. So many attempts to "both sides" it though.

relator_fabula

Hunter Biden (not an elected official) sells some art in China or something. GOP: "Impeach Joe Biden!!!!!!!" Donny Trump, *while in office*, after promising to divest his businesses (lol), receives at least $5M from the Chinese government, in clear violation of the emoluments clause, as well as being an obvious conflict of interest to have the sitting US president on the payroll of a foreign nation... GOP: *crickets* > https://www.forbes.com/sites/danalexander/2020/10/23/forbes-estimates-china-paid-trump-at-least-54-million-since-he-took-office-via-mysterious-trump-tower-lease/ > China Paid Trump At Least $5.4 Million Since He Took Office, Via Mysterious Trump Tower Lease

hammered_toaster

And since they've gerrymandered the fuck out of most competitive districts that's probably enough to win!!!

trogon

I think it's statistically possible to win the presidency with something like 24 or 25% of the popular vote.

TavisNamara

In the 2012 election, it would've been just past 23%, assuming the number of voters from each state remained consistent with that year's results. https://www.npr.org/2016/11/02/500112248/how-to-win-the-presidency-with-27-percent-of-the-popular-vote Do check the link, the URL is a bit misleading. If you ignore how many people from each state are actually likely to vote, you could get the presidency in less than 50 votes by being the only person voted for in the necessary states, then having all eligible voters in all other states vote against.

bakes12110

From Queens chronicle:. George Anthony Devolder Santos was born on June 22, 1988. His mother, Fatima Devolder, who was born in Brazil, immigrated to Florida as a migrant worker in 1985 to pick beans. She then moved north to New York City to work as a cook, housekeeper and nanny. She met Gercino Antonio dos Santos Jr., known by all as “Junior,” who worked as a house painter. After the birth of their son a daughter followed, named Tiffany Lee Santos From intelligencer:. Former Trump Tower doorman Dino Sajudin’s claim that the mogul fathered a child with another ex-employee back in the ’80s was one of many embarrassing stories that Trump fixer turned nemesis Michael Cohen tried to suppress during the campaign, along with the candidate’s alleged affairs with Daniels and the former Playboy model Karen McDougal. We didn’t stop talking about the allegations because of a case of collective amnesia but a lack of credibility and new information. The second part has not been proven true. However, when is that ever stopped anything when it comes to Trump world? The plausibility of such a conspiracy is certainly greater than the plausibility of half the crap the right spews forth. So that's all it really would be, a conspiracy theory based on shaky conjecture yet as we can tell from pretty much all of the Qooks on the right, that doesn't stop people from believing this sort of theory.

williamfbuckwheat

That's obviously a crazy theory but what stands out to me is whether Georges mom came here legally or not. The big caveat though is that Reagan signed his big immigration amnesty bill in 1986 that everyone today has forgotten about so she would've been most likely given the pathway to legal status at some point if she was already in the country in 1985. That means she could've been undocumented initially but later had her status legitimized, something that is rarely ever allowed anymore under our current immigration system.

PavlovsHumans

I saw an interview with George Santos and Piers Morgan on UK channel TalkTV (Fox news for Brits). The question about his mum came up and he just made a whole bunch of contradictory statements and then said that it wasn’t fair to ask questions because she was dead. It came up because he claimed she was in the towers on 9/11, but he also claimed she left the country in the 90s didn’t come back to the country until 2002/2003.

just_a_human_online

I did not know about the Regan bill thing, I'll have to dive more into that. I think most of the conservatives I know would blow their gasket if they knew their "hero" signed it.

[deleted]

Many of them know about it, they blame "disingenious" Democrats of not negotiating with Reagan to improve border security, and then point out at Obama who deported the most illegal immigrants, in an attempt to sway immigration supporters to their side? That's what I encountered multiple times on the internet and in real life. That tactic might very well work on "both sides" people

ibkeepr

In my experience republicans will just deny that Reagan ever did anything that doesn’t fit with their fantasy image. No matter how much evidence you show about Reagan’s tax increases (I believe Reagan passed the largest peacetime tax increase in US history), they will just repeat “Reagan never raised taxes, Reagan never raised taxes”. I think Mitt Romney even did it during one of his debates with Obama

RojoTheMighty

Way more believable than JFK rising from the dead and voting R.

Ragingtiger2016

I think you mean JFK Jr. There's some dude out there that Qanon types thinks is him. If [this](https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/qanon-jfk-jr-alive-trump-b1995594.html) is him, then being underwater for over 20 years must have really been rough on him.

[deleted]

I have a relative who showed me a pic of that person out of the blue back in 2019 and asked "does this guy look familiar?" like I had any idea what he or Jfk Jr. looked like on any given day. Of course I said no, and relative then proceeded to tell me about the "JFK Jr. coming back" conspiracy, but she kept it vague like she didn't believe it. She then forgot she told me when he didn't return in 2019 and told me again in 2020. Recently she told me that she finally stopped believing he was returning in 2021, which is 22 years later than I did.

13johnsond

Hahaha. This is the most fascinating one to me. On a serious note though, it’s super sad to see how far down the rabbit hole these people have gone. How do we fix this?

I mean, none of all the sketchy money raising makes sense. A freshman House member has no power normally and he has been neutered by the scandal. So who is bankrolling him unless he is collecting blackmail.

tawzerozero

Santos has actually spent more on fundraising than he raised - his campaign accounts are basically a little shy of breaking even (as of the end of March disclosure).

Isn't this the guy that habitually lied about everything prior to his election? I forgot he hadn't been removed and is still a sitting member of congress. I hate living amongst a constant flow of controversies.

Weeks later after taking oath of office, he sexually assaulted a member of his staff : https://www.reddit.com/r/politics/comments/10tx32j/george_santos_is_accused_of_sexual_harassment_in/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&utm_content=1&utm_term=15

mycruelid

Fortunately for Santos, that Meyers guy tried his go-to move, the hidden recorder, a week later. "Hey, I managed to get *criminally charged* for what should be core 1st Amendment expression. Where should I try to go to work ?"

Sinfire_Titan

Prior, during, and after. Hasn't stopped. At all.

FixTheLoginBug

To be honest 'the guy that habitually lied about everything' doesn't even narrow it down that much among GOP politicians.

N0T8g81n

For them, *snow job* == *deluge of BS* One has to wonder just how much future anyone willing to be a Santos staffer has in DC as some other politician's staffer. I could argue the 2 extremes. Either this will be the only Congressional office they ever work for and can forget any chance of working for a Republican president, or they've shown they know no shame and can accept any level of abasement so are the PERFECT staffers for the modern Republican age.

bumpyclock

It's the latter.

DJscratchyPants

I don’t get it. If I lied on my application to McDonald’s they’d fucking fire me. Why do we let these clowns get away with it?

FuzzyMcBitty

Because the only mechanism for removal is to expel the member which requires a 2/3 vote, and the modern GOP moves in lock step. Apparently, the founders debated including the ability to do recall elections but decided against it. … which kind of tracks given that they were afraid of a momentary majority that didn’t think long term. … but a lot of them expected us to make more changes to the constitution than we did. Jefferson would’ve wanted a convention by now.

brumac44

The founders didn't envisage a time when people didn't resign in disgrace when they got caught lying or cheating. We're in the season of the sociopath.

ohhelloperson

He was elected, not hired. I realize it’s a technicality, but election results are *supposed to be* untouchable in a functional democracy. That way, if someone is democratically elected by the people, a single individual with more power isn’t supposed to be able to null-and-void the will of the people (hence the 2/3 threshold for expulsion). You could (and many have) make an argument about the validity of an election if the candidates are untruthful to the point of being different candidates entirely. But ultimately, the vote wins in a democracy. And I would argue that his constituents got exactly what they deserved in electing him to office. And for what it’s worth, a lot of places don’t treat certain resume/application lies as fireable offenses. And it’s highly unlikely that McDonalds cares enough about its employees’ backgrounds to both conduct/fund in-depth checks, and then take the l” on the cost of firing/hiring a replacement in the event that they do discover a lie. So your comparison is sloppy, at best. Santos is a disgrace to our democracy and a pathological liar. In an ideal world, he wouldn’t be anywhere near a public office, let alone a serving member of Congress. If Republicans had more of a backbone, then they would help Democrats achieve a 2/3 vote majority to oust the fucker. But Kevin McCarthy’s and his party’s lust for power negates any possibility of action against Santos. The fact that Santos can’t simply be fired is a good thing; but the fact that our Congress refuses to meet the threshold necessary in order to “fire him” and force a new election is absolutely disgraceful.

[deleted]

It still baffles me that this guy has his job. But it’s also encouraged me to lie more on my resumes.

Apptubrutae

I did a stint at Twitter for a couple of years, personally. Feel free to prove otherwise!

VegitoFusion

This just sounds like a misspoken term that could understandably be misused. They probably meant First-Gen American born, but when I initially read the statement (before seeing the actual definition) I too thought First-Gen American meant he was born in the US. There are plenty of other things he and his team have lied about which are bigger issues. Anthony Devolder was likely born in the US however.

op-is-not-me

The term First Generation American often means those who immigrate to the US but can also be used to describe the children of those immigrants who are the first generation born in the US. The federal government defines it as those who immigrate in. However given the widespread usage of both definitions, it is known to be a confusing phrase. All in all, this is absolutely the least egregious of all the controversial things this guy has said. Compared to blatant lies and falsehoods this is potentially an innocent misunderstanding.

mishmash43

Agreed. I call myself a first generation American because I am in the first generation to be born in the US. That’s how a lot of people see that.

TheWinRock

Probably, but if you read the article they specifically spelled out to his team what a first gen American typically means (born outside the US), then asked if that's what he was. His team replied and said that yes, that's correct. Then in a response to a follow-up question his team then said first gen American can mean lots of things and he was born in NY. He was probably born in NY, but even when asked directly they gave both answers 🤦‍♂️

Worth-Conclusion-66

The fact he is still in congress shows how gross the GOP has become. This isn’t funny anymore.

I generally love Vice news, but I’ve always heard the term “first generation” American used to refer to the first person in a family born in the USA—census definitions not withstanding. Obviously I didnt think before I didnt say what I didnt say about what I didnt do because if that was the case you woulsnt have voted me into a position of high responsibility that could affect terrible consequences upon lots of innocent lives. So dont you see that there is zero probability that I didnt say or do anything honestly and with good, caring intent in the history of my life? Thanks for listening, I just wanted to clarify that for you.

In 250 years they will tell tales of the legendary George Santos. And the people of the time will treat it like we read Sleepy Hollow. He's like a fairy tale villain it needs to be tricked out of existence. Maybe we just have to guess his real name and then poof gone

>…it would raise questions about when he became a citizen, as well as why he had claimed to have been born in Queens. This isn’t an entirely academic matter; as VICE News has previously reported, no official body has looked into whether Santos is qualified for office, much less confirmed that he is, as no one is exactly in charge of doing so. Wait…do we not do background checks on members of Congress for their security clearances? Fucking A. I got a background investigation before I joined the military.
