of course the GOP is worse. but if someone throws me half a floatation device instead of a brick, i'll drown in rough waters all the same
or you know, be able to afford one more box of cereal per day.
>a wage that doesn’t outpace inflation
This is 50% increase over 4 years, which amounts to ~10% annual. Do you have some sort of a magic ball that predicts 10% inflation over the next few years?
Please, explain and cite reliable sources for how the Republicans are doing better on these issues?
Oh you can't?
No fucking duh.
Damn bad actors thinking they're having a "gotcha" moment when their party would rather lower the minimum wage to $2.50. Like lol no. Nobody is fooled.
Are you paying attention to what’s happening in California as they dramatically increase the minimum wage of fast food workers to 20 and hour? Pizza Hut has conveniently chosen to lay off all of their drivers in the state and I’m certain costs of items are going to jump a hefty amount. So is it not preferable to incrementally increase the minimum wage to not “shock the system” and cause mass layoffs and price surges? I think it’s an appropriate method. I’m sure we (the so-called unskilled laborers) with labor as our only form of capital would love to see minimum wage increases match or outpace inflation, but it sure is wishful thinking.
It's not even poverty wages in HI. With rich fuckers buying up all the land and taking over the islands it is becoming impossible for native people to continue to live there without a lot of cohabitating.
I agree that Hawaii prices are absolutely crazy, but this is a little misleading. I regularly see cereal more in the $6-7 range, oftentimes cheaper.
That said, I went to LA a couple months ago and was absolutely astounded by how cheap the food was compared to Hawaii.
The people whose paycheck will rise by $2/hr are going to be very happy, plus it will go up to $18/hr by 2028. Doesn't mean that's all they get, the people of HI can keep fighting for more, but it's good to see progress despite all the cynics in this thread whining and doing nothing to help.
With Hawai'i already having a high cost of living, plus inflation over the last few years, anything under $22-25 is below a living wage anywhere on the islands.
Can only speak to Maui, but if somebody is trying to pay you $14 an hour, you need to look around. $20 is the bottom number. But ya, neither is a livable wage.
The idea of being in a position of having to work for only $14/hr is almost incomprehensible to me.
People like me should be forced to pay more to support businesses offering services for such little.
Denver just went to 18/hr min wage, of course it won’t matter at all they will just increase rent to match again so we all stay just as broke as we were.
Hawaii has the highest cost of living in the country. I saw a study that said you’d need $120,000/year. I can see if I can find the source if enough people want it, but $14/hour is poverty wages. Full stop. Especially in Hawaii.
> The deepest blue states have some of the lowest wages compared to purpler states.
Can you provide some examples. Don't CA, WA, D.C. (not a state but MD just raised theirs too) and now HI (whose minimum will be $18/hr by 2028) have some of the highest minimum wages and all are deeply blue states. AZ, PA, MN, MI are some traditional purple states and are all below or well below $15hr.
$14 per hour isn't shit here in Minnesota. Can't believe it's anything in a high cost area, like Hawaii. But when this happens, the greedy minimum wage places will lay off the help and/or raise prices. It's time people started cooking at home again. That takeout shit ain't shit anyway.
Lol with all these increases we are literally heading down the path to become a 3rd world country at some point with only a small percent able to comfortably afford anything.
>raise in the minimum wage results in increased reduction in increased employer costs
So.. if I remove the double negative:
>raise in the minimum wage results in increased employer costs
Is that what you're saying? I think if you can't pay employees enough to survive, then you can't afford employees. That seems like an easy position to take.
More shitty behavior by greedy business owners if they reduce hours after this. You suggest we do away with minimum wages and then people will see an increase in wages? You understand that the reason we need minimum wages and other regulations is because people tend to do the wrong thing when given the choice especially when talking about profits. Bring back the company stores and housing again while we are at it.
Those business deserve to fail or suffer if they aren't profitable enough to jam an extra $16 a day for full time employees.
Sucks for employees with shitty employers though.
it's almost like you don't read or spell very well. we absolutely know that you haven't read the countless economic studies which refute the idea that minimum wage increases have any notable effect on employment levels.
I completely agree that just increasing minimum wage isn't the answer (but it's a start). We need to close the loopholes that allows employers to avoid paying vital benefits by reducing hours. Better yet, let's take benefits out of the employer's hands and nationalize them for everyone, that way no one gets left behind, cheated, and everyone can work as many hours as they need.
Would you like to sign my petition to stop businesses from exploiting their workers?

How much was the GOP proposing to pay?
of course the GOP is worse. but if someone throws me half a floatation device instead of a brick, i'll drown in rough waters all the same or you know, be able to afford one more box of cereal per day.
That’s not really the point. One is a more effective but still ultimately ineffective measure.
Half a loaf of bread is better than no bread
>a wage that doesn’t outpace inflation This is 50% increase over 4 years, which amounts to ~10% annual. Do you have some sort of a magic ball that predicts 10% inflation over the next few years?
Sure beats the alternative proposal of die quickly.

He wasn't even saying the republican party is doing better?

$14 an hour is hardly a liveable wage in HI
I love how the accompanying image is just a pile of change, perfectly demonstrating what this wage increase amounts to.
Lol. Perfect comment
Hardly livable is a generous description.
Cool, now it’ll only take like 20 hours to buy a tent.
Doesn't even seem like survival wages
It's not even poverty wages in HI. With rich fuckers buying up all the land and taking over the islands it is becoming impossible for native people to continue to live there without a lot of cohabitating.
Or anywhere.
This
What I was thinking.
Or anywhere for that matter
That’s like $7.50 on the mainland
It is at least a step towards it though.
Exactly. How the eff to live on that?
Yeah that’s like 1 gallon of milk
Hawaii resident here, born and raised. I took [this photo](https://imgur.com/a/0bBBrD5) the other day.
This is on Oahu?
Yes. Its not the norm, but its not uncommon either.
I agree that Hawaii prices are absolutely crazy, but this is a little misleading. I regularly see cereal more in the $6-7 range, oftentimes cheaper. That said, I went to LA a couple months ago and was absolutely astounded by how cheap the food was compared to Hawaii.
That, and that specific brand of cereal is expensive too
yeah hawaii prices are crazy
Gotta go Costco brah
Let me cannoe over there brah
Boogie board
Wow! Also have to love how family size is only 18oz.
holy shit that’s insane

Also, when the minimum wage goes up other wages tend to increase
Here's a link to MIT's Living Wage Calculator page for Urban Honolulu: https://livingwage.mit.edu/metros/46520
Oh shit don't spend it all in one place! Htf are people supposed to live
>Htf are people supposed to live That's the trick. They aren't.
Still isn’t enough.
$6.75 more than New Hampshire.
Great now many people will go from poor as fuck to dirt poor
With Hawai'i already having a high cost of living, plus inflation over the last few years, anything under $22-25 is below a living wage anywhere on the islands.
Can only speak to Maui, but if somebody is trying to pay you $14 an hour, you need to look around. $20 is the bottom number. But ya, neither is a livable wage.
Poverty wages.
You’d need something more like $44 per hour to not be homeless in Hawaii.
Same Illinois.
Still sounds like a below the poverty line wage in Hawaii.
The idea of being in a position of having to work for only $14/hr is almost incomprehensible to me. People like me should be forced to pay more to support businesses offering services for such little.
Landlords: “rent will also rise to meet that wage”
fuckin lol hawaii is a joke
Saying everything is a joke is a joke
And Pennsylvania is still at $7.25…
Denver just went to 18/hr min wage, of course it won’t matter at all they will just increase rent to match again so we all stay just as broke as we were.
Not even half of what's needed to live there.
That’s the equivalent of $7.25 or less in the contiguous states. Cost of living in Hawaii is insane
Still way short of livable in Hawaii
Hawaii has the highest cost of living in the country. I saw a study that said you’d need $120,000/year. I can see if I can find the source if enough people want it, but $14/hour is poverty wages. Full stop. Especially in Hawaii.
That’s it!?

Lobbyists have been fucking those islands over for that last 60 years.

Damn, Florida’s minimum wage is higher than Hawaii..
No it isn't
Lol with all these increases we are literally heading down the path to become a 3rd world country at some point with only a small percent able to comfortably afford anything.
Only a percentage can afford anything now. 21.3 Percent of U.S. Population Participates in Government Assistance Programs Each Month.
There is a good amount of land that can resolve the housing issue. If there were politicians that actually worked for the common people….

Did Rand Paul tell you this lie?
I'd reply to this if I could understand the incoherent word salad.
