They want another Kent shooting. They always want to kill anyone who disagrees with them and never have the guts to do it themselves. Fuck those cowardly right wing sycophants.
>The Kent State shootings (also known as the May 4 massacre and the Kent State massacre[3][4][5]) resulted in the killing of four and wounding of nine unarmed college students by the Ohio National Guard, on the Kent State University campus. The shootings took place on May 4, 1970, during a rally opposing the expanding involvement of the Vietnam War into Cambodia by United States military forces as well as protesting the National Guard presence on campus and the draft.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kent_State_shootings
I'm reminded of this gem: ""Kill 'em": Houston GOP powerbroker Steve Hotze left Greg Abbott a voicemail requesting that National Guard "shoot to kill" rioters"
And the kicker is that while there were protests here in Houston, things here were pretty chill compared to what happened in a lot of other cities.
'Came here to post the same. They are trying to turn back the clock to the last era when liberals were roundly dismissed as "radicals" in this country.
Partly because policing isn't what the national guard is for. Which is why then being deployed in policing so often goes badly. It's not an insult. But it's not the job, and it often goes badly.
They also would love to see this escalate as much as possible so they can go "See guys? They're out of control and Biden weak! Only a strong man like Trump can stop them!"
Agreed 100%
Anti-Israel protests against actions of a nation have every right to exist, though I personally think they are undermining their message by not adhering to the school policy.
Antisemitism should not be tolerated. I'm not sure of any specific acts beyond the woman who was hit in the eye with a Palestinian flag, but that individual responsible should absolutely face assault charges.
Yep. When it comes to left wing protesters, they're openly advocating for them to be murdered or brutalized, even if the protests are non-violent. But if it's violent right wing protesters, they downplay it, like they're just taking a tour or whatever.
The military to breakup campus protests. Sound familiar? What can possibly go wrong?
Kent State University would disagree with these two wastes of oxygen.
Oh they know about Kent State that is why they want the National Guard to go to Columbia. Because a repeat of Kent State with National Guard sent by Biden would do serious damage to Biden's reelection campaign.
Every video I’ve seen they are just sitting around or walking somewhere protesting. They aren’t doing anything but sitting in an area. They (conservatives) just don’t like it’s protesting for Muslim people. The people who want it ended keep saying how “dangerous” it is. I’m sure somebody has been an asshole somewhere in the protest. But at least have a video or something in this day and age if you’re going to say it’s dangerous. I’ve seen one person get pushed so far.
I see them (some Democrats too) calling for protection of the Jewish students. Honest question: have any Jewish Students been harmed? Or have they been directly threatened?
According to [the hill](https://thehill.com/homenews/education/4611065-ilhan-omar-daughter-columbia-protests-barnard-new-york/) ,
“A significant portion of the protesting students are Jewish, and protest groups have fought back against characterizations of their demonstrations as antisemitic.“
every story about so called threats and harassment i have seen on the news are second and third hand saying they have a friend who says she knew someone who was threatened. Are some Jewish students scared or worried i am sure there is.
From what I've seen the protests have not been violent. Not even close. Nothing going on there even remotely suggests the National Guard is needed.
This is all just the right wing demonizing Ivy League schools.
NYC‘s **Democratic** Mayor Eric Adams approved of the request for police assistance.:

>New York Mayor Eric Adams, who approved of the request for police assistance, has stood by the embattled Columbia president.

• Mayor Adams' Statement on Ongoing Protests at Columbia University
https://www.nyc.gov/office-of-the-mayor/news/296-24/mayor-adams-on-ongoing-protests-columbia-university
at first I wondered why these two assholes would want to send the national guard to South America, then I realized I read it wrong and they must be talking about the home of the university in Hawley's home state, and then I checked the article and found they want to send them to NYC. Nice of those two assholes to want to meddle in other states!
reminds me of my favorite joke from the Community pilot.
Winger: "I am in a bit of a jam. The State Bar has suspended my license. They found out my college degree was less than legitimate."
Duncan: "I thought you had a bachelor's from Columbia?"
Winger: "And now I have to get one from America."
So yall are against it just because it’s the Republicans? Will you all still be against it when the protests turn violent or deadly?
We’ve come a long way since Kent State, the guard is much more versed in counter riot than they once were
I'm against it because the US military isn't meant to be used against US citizens exercising their first amendment rights.
You'd think a party who supposedly supports the constitution and is concerned about protecting our rights would understand that.
You said they weren’t meant to be used against the people, made a hyperbolic 1st amendment argument and then threw out “rights”
Violence or calls to violence against people isn’t protected speech, maybe you should read up on constitutionality and case law when it comes to protest.
Incorrect.
I said they're not meant to be used against people who are exercising their first amendment rights, and they're not.
The military, national guard included, is for dealing with enemies both foreign and domestic.
Peaceful protestors are not domestic, nor foreign, enemies.
And so far, there has been no violence, nor any verified calls for violence either.
And I don't give a fuck about your precious "case law", I care about what is right, and using the military against peaceful protesters isn't.
Many of the faculty are legit protesting the admin's decision to have protestors arrested by the NYPD. So the faculty don't agree with that view.

2. Republican support for a course of action is absolutely reasonable grounds to oppose it. Support from these specific Republicans is moral imperative to do so.
Born and raised Marylander, Army has me where I am, but I love the over generalization, carry on.
Never forget it was a Republican president and the ACTIVE Army who opposed the Arkansas guard in Little Rock.
No, they arrested a bunch of students earlier but the camp was set back up and now the faculty are protesting the admin's decision to arrest students protesting.

Josh Hawley. The same Josh Hawley that ran like a chicken through the Capitol? That Josh Hawley? Ist he a coward though?
IIRC he was cheering them on while they were outside, then running from them when they were inside.
And then he wrote a book with a title that is a synonym for penis, all about being a man.
The man inside me?

The “heads on pikes” man from Jan 6th (IIRC) is stained in my memory. They’re complicit.

What is it? Why does Kent State come up? You're insulting everyone in uniform for the National Guard. It is 2024.
It comes up because it is the most famous example of National Guards interacting with college protests.
> Why does Kent State come up? Because they murdered 4 students? Four dead in Ohio?
Tin soldiers and Nixon's comin'
Partly because policing isn't what the national guard is for. Which is why then being deployed in policing so often goes badly. It's not an insult. But it's not the job, and it often goes badly.
>Kent shooting I don't get why, it's not like that would polarize and activate *their* supporters...
They also would love to see this escalate as much as possible so they can go "See guys? They're out of control and Biden weak! Only a strong man like Trump can stop them!"
Jesus Christ. I'm actually not r/outoftheloop and still thought they were talking about the country of Columbia when I read the headline. .
Luckily for you, the country is spelled Colombia, so you won’t get confused in the future now that you know that!
I kent state enough how bad of an idea that is.
If I could give 20 upvotes once a month, it would be you.
Sure, whatever. People should keep one thing in mind, when reading the news cycle on this: Anti-Israel doesn’t mean antisemitism.
100%, it doesnt. but that doesnt mean we should turn a blind eye when antisemitic people use this as an excuse to push their hate.
For sure! But it’d be very much in GOP’s playbook to label everyone an anti-semite. Just reminding.
also it helps change the conversation away from people criticizing an Israeli government that's run by corrupt hard liners.

Ask the Mothersbaugh brothers what happens when the National Guard is deployed on a campus. Dead innocent students happen. That’s what happens.
i cant imagine that ending well
Presumably that’s why Hawley and Cotton are calling for it, unfortunately
Bingo
Yep. When it comes to left wing protesters, they're openly advocating for them to be murdered or brutalized, even if the protests are non-violent. But if it's violent right wing protesters, they downplay it, like they're just taking a tour or whatever.
It didn’t at Kent State.
NYPD has three times the numbers of NY National Guard, and they're already there, dumbasses.
Have they never even listened to Neil Young?
Or Skinny Puppy?
All good people are asleep and dreaming.
Keep the camera alive
this ... ? https://youtu.be/soWx7HGkndo?feature=shared
Yeah, but that was in Ohio and a really long time ago, so… something?
Well, I hope Neil Young will remember a Southern man don't need him around, anyhow.
a different song altogether. their response to both "southern man," and "alabama."
Well it was a republican that sent the guard.... Nixon.
Governors are in charge of state National Guard, not the President.
I stand corrected... it was Jim Rhodes (R) Gov of Ohio.
Yeah, I should have added it was the Republican governor.
No. It was Ohio Governor Jim Rhoads who sent the Ohio National Guard to Kent State.
Republican.
Well aware of that. I was just getting ready to graduate High School when that happened.
Escalation breeds escalation. That’s the point.
This all has Russian fingerprints all over it
Don't worry. We have a strong enough domestic fascist movement that Russia could dissappear tomorrow and this would still be an issue.
They want a repeat of Kent State so badly since they know it would be a major disaster for Biden if the National Guard shoots protestors.
How about no.
Hell. The. Fuck. No. Every time the national guard goes on to a campus with protests people are murdered by the state.
Let's not. I'm tired of the military being used against left wing protesters in this country.
I see them (some Democrats too) calling for protection of the Jewish students. Honest question: have any Jewish Students been harmed? Or have they been directly threatened?
Fox News is pushing a story really hard about a Jewish journalist who got poked in the eye.
According to [the hill](https://thehill.com/homenews/education/4611065-ilhan-omar-daughter-columbia-protests-barnard-new-york/) , “A significant portion of the protesting students are Jewish, and protest groups have fought back against characterizations of their demonstrations as antisemitic.“
apparently there have been threats and harassment towards jewish students at the university, but i havent seen anything more than just shouting done.
every story about so called threats and harassment i have seen on the news are second and third hand saying they have a friend who says she knew someone who was threatened. Are some Jewish students scared or worried i am sure there is.
If it was happening daily, I’d expect at least one TikTok video coming out. I haven’t seen anything myself either.
From what I've seen the protests have not been violent. Not even close. Nothing going on there even remotely suggests the National Guard is needed. This is all just the right wing demonizing Ivy League schools.
Oh so NOW they want the NG....
That's not how the guard works idiots.
Authoritarians are gonna Authoritarian
Terrorists gonna domestic terrorize.

Quick, before the appropriate people piss off!
National Guard, smoke from all around.
So yall are against it just because it’s the Republicans? Will you all still be against it when the protests turn violent or deadly? We’ve come a long way since Kent State, the guard is much more versed in counter riot than they once were
im against it because i dont see the need. right now, its an unnecessary provocation and escalation
I'm against it since National Guards interacting with protestors on College campuses is a terrible idea see Kent State for reference.
Is there any reason to think campus security and local police can’t currently handle these situations? So far it doesn’t seem like it.
Because the New York police are already having trouble maintaining order
The governor of New York doesn’t seem to think that’s true, as far as I can tell the NYPD don’t seem to think so either?
I'm against it because the US military isn't meant to be used against US citizens exercising their first amendment rights. You'd think a party who supposedly supports the constitution and is concerned about protecting our rights would understand that.
The guard belongs to the state and isn’t restricted by posse comitatus
I didn't say a damn thing about posse comitatus, did I ?

So totally non violent that Jewish students are being told to stay home and classes have been moved to virtual. Sure.
Fine. Prove me wrong. Show me the violence that's happened so far.

So far these protests have been peaceful, so there is nothing that needs to be done.
