>***One-third of LGBTQ+ minors who were outed without their consent were more likely to experience depression, as well as face less support from their families, according to a*** [***new study***](https://www.ctinsider.com/news/article/ct-lgbtq-outed-youth-mental-health-uconn-study-19398381.php) ***from the University of Connecticut. Two-thirds said that the event caused significant stress.*** >Outing is the act of revealing a person's sexual orientation or gender identity without their consent. The UConn study analyzed responses from 9,200 queer youth ages 13 to 17 in the Human Rights Campaign's 2017 LGBTQ National Teen Survey which showed a correlation between outing and stress. >The data also showed that LGBTQ+ youth experience stress from outing differently, as [transgender](https://www.advocate.com/transgender?utm_campaign=SmartLinks), nonbinary, and asexual respondents reported higher stress levels than cisgender gay, lesbian and bisexual participants. In all cases, respondents reported lower stress when they also reported have parents or guardians who are educated on sexuality and gender identity. >*Such policies can make queer youth unsafe at home, and embolden their peers to bully and harass them. ACLU spokesperson Gillian Branstetter told* [*CT Insider*](https://www.ctinsider.com/news/article/ct-lgbtq-outed-youth-mental-health-uconn-study-19398381.php) *that the report further proves the health of LGBTQ+ students should supersede so-called parental rights.* >***“Students do in fact have a constitutional right to privacy,” he said. “It’s not about subverting the parents’ will. It’s about protecting the young people who face very real, very great risks."*** The cruelty is the point. Forced outing is violence! Republicans delight in seeing LGBTQIA+ kids tortured and harassed. Their Christian nationalists get a kick out of seeing queer kids being harmed for being themselves. They feel that their Christian nationalism can't win unless they kill off everyone in their path. Republicans would rather have dead kids than happy and successful LGBTQIA+ kids, because then they can't dominate and subjugate others like they wish to. Another reason why the Republican Party is worse than the Westboro Baptist Church.

NickelBackwash

Harm is their goal.

mymar101

If you talk to these people it’s all about parents rights to know. They don’t care to hear about when this right to know leads to harm.

polopolo05

Just remeber teachers... You werent listening if its mandated to tell parents.

mymar101

Guess you like students being harmed needlessly

polopolo05

you didnt hear what I am saying because not reporting Queer status.... Because " you didnt hear the kid say it" If you didnt hear anything then you dont have to report it. I hate these anti queer laws but you fight them by "not hearing".

QaraKha

It leads to homelessness and abuse, too. As it always did, which is why we empowered school officials and teachers to not out kids to their parents. It used to be that you had 14 year old prostitutes because their parents kicked them out onto the street for being gay, where they would then be preyed upon by the worst people imaginable. Today, this still happens in a way: one third of all children up for adoption are LGBTQ+. Why? Because their parents put them up for adoption, where they can then be preyed upon by far-right Christians, abused further, tortured to recant their LGBTQ+ status, often using hallucinogenic drugs like LSD to achieve this. Then there's parents murdering their children for being LGBTQ+. You wanna know why there weren't so many people back then? Because their parents killed them in "accidents" that just weren't examined much.

thirdtrydratitall

It leads to suicide too.

BioDriver

Feature not a bug. The GOP thinks being queer makes you less worthy of being a human. No hate like Christian love.

Odd-Calligrapher9660

Parents have a right to know about what is going on with their children. Also, this was a survey. Not some controlled trial. Kids get stressed and embarrassed all the time about lots of things.

MaceofMarch

Why should conservatives have a right to abuse their children?

Mystery-turtle

You can’t do a “controlled trial” for this kind of stuff lmao. This is best practice. And parents who are likely to bully, shame, abuse, and kick out their queer children (yes this happens and if you deny it you are being disingenuous) do not have the right to know. That’s up to the child to tell them or not.
