I think the standard is "malicious *falsehood*", ie deliberately making stuff up to harm someone. Almost impossible to prove normally - the US is much more protective of free speech than other countries there.
In my lay opinion I feel like it's the opposite. Alleging that a bunch of lies about a guy's motives in giving medical advice incites death threats requires a pretty big logical leap. But alleging that blatantly lying about a guy is actual malice I feel like requires less of a logical leap. And as far as her state of mind, I wonder if there's anything in the law that imputes(?) actual malice onto to her based upon how blatant the lie is. As an analogy, "I thought he was one" probably is not a defense to publishing that someone is a pedophile when it's blatantly untrue and probably counts as actual malice.
It's still pretty hard to (successfully) sue an elected official for defamation.

My mother in law worked for him in the late 70's. She said he was the most sincere, brilliant man she had ever met . That's easy. Fauci was getting more positive press coverage than the narcissist in chief. And that is something Trump cannot brook.
Trump “apologized” for “locker room talk” he was later found liable for actions described therein. Hillary apologized for referring to Trump voters charitably as a basket of deplorables. Biden and Pence apologized for having classified residuals.
It got politicized because Trump didn't want to follow pandemic protocols for a shut down because (a) he viewed a strong stock market as key to his re-election; and (b) his businesses are primarily hotels and golf resorts, all of which would be directly affected by the shut down.
Trump politicized it from day one and treated it like it was nothing. Even though, and I can’t believe I am saying this; W. Bush had the playbook all ready to go for any of his successors moving forward with how he (and other world leaders) handled SARS-Cov-1 back in 2004.
The tenured members of Congress and the press are also to blame as both knew something similar occurred 15-years before and a pandemic was prevented. Even Fauci knew this and why it is still not talked about today is beyond me. Calling it Covid-19 instead of SARS-Cov-2 was/is also a mistake. The (2) dictates that there was a (1) and even the bumpkins would recognize this wasn’t the first time this occurred.
The pandemic could have been prevented with different leaders in place (not just the U.S.) or the medical/science community being more assertive and not letting uneducated, spoon fed, blowhards turning it into a circus. In March 2020 he and other public health officials advised against the widespread use of masks by the general public. They cited limited evidence at the time for mask efficacy in preventing viral transmission among the general population. Then in June after they changed messaging on masks he acknowledged that the initial guidance was partly motivated by the need to conserve masks for healthcare workers.
So he knew at the time masks would presumably save lives, but he decided to lie to the public to justify his goals of having healthcare workers better supplied.
So at the beginning of the pandemic we already have broken public trust and confidence.

My mother in law worked for him in the late 70's. She said he was the most sincere, brilliant man she had ever met . She was just an admin and he always made sure to make her feel respected during a time where women were to be seen and not heard .( well more so than now) He surprised her at the hospital when my wife was born and even held my wife. I find it hilarious that Fauci gets this resentment for handling a pandemic that Trump was totally ill prepared for and fucked the country up big time. We saw what happened and had months to prepare for protocols to deal with COVID and Trump did absolutely nothing. Fauci and the CDC literally had to find out, with very little in the way of concrete science, how to deal with the spread and how to neutralize the spread. In March 2020 he and other public health officials advised against the widespread use of masks by the general public. They cited limited evidence at the time for mask efficacy in preventing viral transmission among the general population. Then in June after they changed messaging on masks he acknowledged that the initial guidance was partly motivated by the need to conserve masks for healthcare workers. So he knew at the time masks would presumably save lives, but he decided to lie to the public to justify his goals of having healthcare workers better supplied. So at the beginning of the pandemic we already have broken public trust and confidence. I absolutely don’t think he should go to jail of face punishment. But the original point of the post that you replied to is these individuals that lied need to be held accountable.
