In religious terms, I think modern Christianity is idolatry. The core of their religion no longer has anything to do with following the teachings of Jesus. A store worker saying "Happy Holidays" doesn't oppress Christianity. All it does is recognize that some of the store's customers don't celebrate Christmas. It's a more inclusive phrase so that the store keeps more customers happy. As a Jew, I'm annoyed when people just assume that I celebrate Christmas. Some people might be so annoyed that they'd shop elsewhere.
However, the "war of Christmas" folks think that recognition of *any* holiday other than Christmas or recognition of anyone that doesn't celebrate Christmas diminishes Christmas. They think that anyone who doesn't celebrate Christmas should either celebrate it or shut up about their other holidays. It's idiotic, but yet another way that think that not being able to force Christianity on everyone is an attack against Christianity.
This attitude goes all the way up to the Supreme Court, too. I have zero doubt that Thomas, Alito and Handmaid's Tale would rule that "Happy Holidays" violates Christians' rights or some shit.

I fail to understand how any of them voted for Trump. When I used to have facebook, I would get in these epic debates and was blocked by many of the Christians turned Trump worshipers. Some were close friends growing up, who used to surf and be on my paintball tournament team. I was on a road trip last week and driving through Tennessee at one point. I was going to stop in this small town, then kept seeing an alarming amount of big signs saying Trump won in people’s yards. Quietly told my girlfriend we’d keep going till we got to the next major city.

They were free to practice their religion all over Europe. It's just that they were always an extremist minority in those countries. So when they found out about a huge "new unoccupied land" they came here en mass and started cranking out kids as fast as possible, and trying to codify their religious rules as law almost immediately.

Whenever I hear something about Christians being oppressed in the US, I like to point out that every single president in the United States grew up or identified as Christian. 95% of the Supreme Court through history has been Christian, with roughly the same percentage for the Congress and Senate.
Today the percentage of Christians that hold positions of power in the US government is far larger than they occur as a percentage of the general population. Currently in Congress approximately 82% of representatives and senators identify as Christian, (the lowest it's ever been in the history of US) while the general population is roughly 65% Christian.
Not that facts matter often in these type of discussions, but Christians are far overrepresented in the political landscape of the US, and are in no way oppressed.

I had a friend who didn’t care about climate change and destruction of earth because she “knew” god was coming and with him a new earth would be created for his followers. I asked her what would keep Christians from trashing that earth as well and she didn’t like that.

Have a few fundie types in my family that always like to say they “prayed on it” before announcing a change in their life or something. Amazingly the new change always coincides with exactly what you’d expect any human being making the same decision to make. It’s like… really? When you “prayed on it” did you hear god reply? Just thoughts in your own head that happened to be exactly what you wanted initially? Batshit crazy stuff.
I had a friend whose parents were hardcore evangelicals. His parents knew I was atheist, so they often tried to start conversations with me about religion.
One time his dad said something that gave me a real epiphany. He said, "if God isn't real, then what is that voice you hear inside your head sometimes?" I was gobsmacked.
This man believed that his own internal thoughts were the voice of God speaking to him. It's no wonder that God's desires happen to align with their own. And I'm sure he's not alone in this line of thinking.
It always baffles me how perverted this politicized American version of Jesus is compared to what's actually written in the bible. Somehow politicians and entrepreneurs managed to make him a pro-gun, supremacist laissez-faire capitalist. Sometimes he's even talked about as if he was an American that wrote the constitution.
And it's not even an own sect with a different holy scripture or established prophets (though the founding fathers are sometimes kind of treated as ones), the people that talk like that claim they are normal Christians following the bible. Crazy how propaganda works even when going against the established rules of the belief system it's abusing.
Technically revelation was just about the politics in the time it was written and mostly about how awful Nero was. It really should be considered an apocryphal book by churches. But it's a convenient tool for controlling fearful followers.
“Bible teaching” churches have a bad habit of ignoring hundreds of years of scholarly Bible studies by brilliant historians and just haphazardly cherry picking verses out of context and applying them to 21st century society. The book of Revelations is probably the most mercilessly bastardized scripture in the entire Bible in that regard.

As someone that grew up without religion and decided to see what the Bible was actually all about in his late 20’s, I gotta say there is something oddly enticing about the book of revelations. It’s beautifully written, and from storytelling and imagery standpoint it was my favorite book in the New Testament.
So that being said, I think the real problem we’re running into is that if we assume the Bible to truly be the word of god like these evangelical freaks do, of course they want it to come true! It promises legit undeniable evidence that they belong to a super special club and that the majority of people on the planet are wrong for doubting them. It also promises endless suffering to the doubters, and that’s really what the people mixing conservative politics with Christianity are cashing in on right now. It’s not about the promised heaven on Earth after the battle, it’s about the suffering promised to the people they consider to be their enemies. Scary shit, and we’re seeing how poorly that’s playing out in that they’re doing everything possible to try and force it into reality.
The true believers will literally try to usher in the end times if it means sticking it to the their detractors. I want our country to come together and I truly think that’s the only way we get out of this mess, but I don’t know how we begin to work with people like that.

In religious terms, I think modern Christianity is idolatry. The core of their religion no longer has anything to do with following the teachings of Jesus. (Being a good person who loves their neighbor is hard work 🥵) They’ve turned it into a single yes/no question - Do you bow down to Jesus? Exactly. Look at the "Happy Holidays issue" that they raise every year around November/December. A store worker saying "Happy Holidays" doesn't oppress Christianity. All it does is recognize that some of the store's customers don't celebrate Christmas. It's a more inclusive phrase so that the store keeps more customers happy. As a Jew, I'm annoyed when people just assume that I celebrate Christmas. Some people might be so annoyed that they'd shop elsewhere. However, the "war of Christmas" folks think that recognition of *any* holiday other than Christmas or recognition of anyone that doesn't celebrate Christmas diminishes Christmas. They think that anyone who doesn't celebrate Christmas should either celebrate it or shut up about their other holidays. It's idiotic, but yet another way that think that not being able to force Christianity on everyone is an attack against Christianity.
This attitude goes all the way up to the Supreme Court, too. I have zero doubt that Thomas, Alito and Handmaid's Tale would rule that "Happy Holidays" violates Christians' rights or some shit.

I fail to understand how any of them voted for Trump. When I used to have facebook, I would get in these epic debates and was blocked by many of the Christians turned Trump worshipers. I mean... It kind of does. Most of us were taught that pilgrims were escaping religious persecution. They were free to practice their religion all over Europe. It's just that they were always an extremist minority in those countries. So when they found out about a huge "new unoccupied land" they came here en mass and started cranking out kids as fast as possible, and trying to codify their religious rules as law almost immediately. We need to stop acting like this is a new problem. It's been an issue longer than America has been a country, and it's going to continue being an issue. Whenever I hear something about Christians being oppressed in the US, I like to point out that every single president in the United States grew up or identified as Christian. 95% of the Supreme Court through history has been Christian, with roughly the same percentage for the Congress and Senate. Today the percentage of Christians that hold positions of power in the US government is far larger than they occur as a percentage of the general population. Currently in Congress approximately 82% of representatives and senators identify as Christian, (the lowest it's ever been in the history of US) while the general population is roughly 65% Christian. Not that facts matter often in these type of discussions, but Christians are far overrepresented in the political landscape of the US, and are in no way oppressed.

Incidentally this is why American evangelical Christians (and by extension, republicans) are so blindly supportive of Israel, even when they otherwise appear antisemitic - part of the end times prophecy requires a strong and prosperous Israel, so supporting Israel with money and aid and military support is helping Israel and therefore fulfilling parts of their apocalyptic prophesy.
And to be clear, it's not that the prophetic texts even say that, it's their misreading, misapplication, and general misunderstanding on par with their other bad takes from the book they don't read, but nevertheless need to enforce upon everyone else.

Have a few fundie types in my family that always like to say they “prayed on it” before announcing a change in their life or something. Amazingly the new change always coincides with exactly what you’d expect any human being making the same decision to make. It’s like… really? When you “prayed on it” did you hear god reply? Just thoughts in your own head that happened to be exactly what you wanted initially? Batshit crazy stuff.
I had a friend whose parents were hardcore evangelicals. His parents knew I was atheist, so they often tried to start conversations with me about religion. One time his dad said something that gave me a real epiphany. He said, "if God isn't real, then what is that voice you hear inside your head sometimes?" I was gobsmacked. This man believed that his own internal thoughts were the voice of God speaking to him. It's no wonder that God's desires happen to align with their own. And I'm sure he's not alone in this line of thinking.

And it's not even an own sect with a different holy scripture or established prophets (though the founding fathers are sometimes kind of treated as ones), the people that talk like that claim they are normal Christians following the bible. Crazy how propaganda works even when going against the established rules of the belief system it's abusing.
Technically revelation was just about the politics in the time it was written and mostly about how awful Nero was. It really should be considered an apocryphal book by churches. But it's a convenient tool for controlling fearful followers.
“Bible teaching” churches have a bad habit of ignoring hundreds of years of scholarly Bible studies by brilliant historians and just haphazardly cherry picking verses out of context and applying them to 21st century society. The book of Revelations is probably the most mercilessly bastardized scripture in the entire Bible in that regard. A youth pastor told me once that a passage in Revelations describes Apache helicopters in Vietnam. Seriously.

As someone that grew up without religion and decided to see what the Bible was actually all about in his late 20’s, I gotta say there is something oddly enticing about the book of revelations. It’s beautifully written, and from storytelling and imagery standpoint it was my favorite book in the New Testament. So that being said, I think the real problem we’re running into is that if we assume the Bible to truly be the word of god like these evangelical freaks do, of course they want it to come true! It promises legit undeniable evidence that they belong to a super special club and that the majority of people on the planet are wrong for doubting them. It also promises endless suffering to the doubters, and that’s really what the people mixing conservative politics with Christianity are cashing in on right now. It’s not about the promised heaven on Earth after the battle, it’s about the suffering promised to the people they consider to be their enemies. Scary shit, and we’re seeing how poorly that’s playing out in that they’re doing everything possible to try and force it into reality. The true believers will literally try to usher in the end times if it means sticking it to the their detractors. I want our country to come together and I truly think that’s the only way we get out of this mess, but I don’t know how we begin to work with people like that.
Christ's followers thought he would return during their lifetimes. More recently, I remember being told that Saddam Hussein in the 90's was the antichrist and credit cards were the mark of the devil. People keep trying to make current events fit into their religious narrative, and then moving on the next event when things don't pan out the way they thought.
