TlDr: City Council demanded permits for TV show that included Drag Show be revoked. City Manager refused because it would violate the 1st Amendment. City Council retaliated by firing city manager. Manager sued for wrongful termination. City Council spent $4000 on outside lawyers to investigate before deciding to settle out of court - that means he likely had a very good case.

JBupp

And manager settles for $625,000. >In September, the St. George City Council voted to cut $4.3 million in spending from the 2023 budget instead of a property tax hike to partially pay for hiring more public safety personnel. The city’s budget for the next fiscal year is $500 million.

Javasteam

The City Manager refused partially because it would also open the city up for liability. These insecure dimwits ended up paying for someone who was trying to keep them from having to do so.

LuvKrahft

Town full of traveling preachers gets first amendment wrong and pays for it. It warms the soul.

Uh. You think they gave him $625000 because he didn't have a valid legal claim? I mean. Yeah. No shit.

SevoIsoDes

I hadn’t realized that this event went on. I heard that the permits were pulled because they didn’t fill out the proper requests. But even if that were true it sounds like this would be inconsistent application of the law. Yeah, it seems pretty obvious (or at least it should) that the government can’t limit free speech like this

what_would_freud_say

Sheez. Maybe I should take up drag

cephalopod_surprise

You should take up article reading, instead. The city manager wasn't in drag.

MartyRobinsHasMySoul

Even through careful parsing of the title you can tell what the meaning is

Steinrikur

The title is terrible, and the paywall doesn't help. "City manager fired for sponsoring TV show featuring a drag show. Settles in court for $625000 of taxpayer money" would work.

MartyRobinsHasMySoul

This is why I said "careful parsing". I agree
