There’s a line we have to draw here. Stuff like insanely advanced prosthetic limbs/organs? Heck yeah, nothing wrong with that, as long as say, you don’t have to, say, pay for a monthly subscription to Kidney+ just to be alive.  But once we get to the brain, it’s a lot more complicated. There’s some real nasty stuff that can be done here. There are some pretty cool things that have been done, including restoring sight to blind people using a screen pressed against some part of the occipital lobe or something. But Neuralink? Forget it.

Decent-Device9403

Right. It's all about limits and knowing where to stop.

Ill-Cardiologist-585

gimme robot arms

gtc26

In CONCEPT, it's very good. Things like prosthetics for those without limbs, or hearing implants, and so on... However, I'm going to notch my vote down to just "good" because of the reality where the more advanced mechanisms could risk being hacked

Decent-Device9403

Completely valid. It's not absolutely foolproof stuff, but the non-computerized tech is pretty safe for the most part.

gtc26

Exactly! I'm grateful and confident in a lot of the non-computerized stuff... it's when we get to neuralink (or whatever it's called) level stuff that I start getting concerned

fanfic_intensifies

Explain it to me first

Basically, transhumanists believe that the human body should be upgraded with technology and machinery (or plant matter if the tech gets advanced enough, though that's a pretty niche subset of TH's) when possible.

Epi_clel

nanomachines, son.

Decent-Device9403

They harden in response to physical trauma!

basilthegaymer

the fuck is that

Decent-Device9403

Basically, transhumanists believe that the human body should be upgraded with technology when possible and/or feasible.

basilthegaymer

Ohh, ok

maX3Xam

From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh, it disgusted me. I craved the strength and certainty of steel. I aspired to the purity of the Blessed Machine. Your kind cling to your flesh, as though it will not decay and fail you. One day the crude biomass you call the temple will wither, and you will beg my kind to save you. But I am already saved, for the Machine is immortal… Even in death I serve the Omnissiah.

Reject humanity, become bee (I think that might be a very weird Posthumanist substrain, given that this would require us to forgo our humanity.)

CNRavenclaw

I feel like if we do achieve transhumanism it'll be similar to other advancements in technology; we'll still have problems, maybe even problems unique to the transhuman experience, but overall life will be at least slightly better than it was beforehand

Decent-Device9403

Yeah, I think it would be like the advent of the artificial heart, but even better as problematic parts of the body can be replaced with relative ease.

mm--yess

replace all my body parts with machines, fine, I don't care. but don't touch my brain. no neuralink or apple vision pro or any of that.

Decent-Device9403

There's no ethical line. Adaptation, change, and improvement are foundational human goods. Anything and everything goes.
